BASL lauds Ibom Air’s New Airbus, Tips More Nigerian Airlines for Regional Operations Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), have commended Ibom Air for the acquisition of its brand-new Airbus A220-300 aircraft.

BASL said the arrival of the aircraft, a first in the lineup of 10 orders, has marked a significant milestone for the Airline and underscores its commitment to providing world-class air travel services to its passengers.

The Way Forward For the Nigerian Aviation Sector - Tosan Duncan Odukoya The Chief Operating Officer of BiCourtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), Tosan Duncan Odukoya, has called for more communication and collaboration among stakeholders in the aviation industry. This, according to her, is part of the needed strategies to remain relevant in the face of the evolution in the sector.

She made this call while speaking at a panel session during the 27th Annual Conference of League of Airport & Aviation Conference (LAAC) held at Providence Hotel, Lagos.

At the event themed, Aviation Industry: Changing Times, Changing Strategies, Duncan, while saying that various players working in silos would not help the industry, stressed there was a need

to address the challenges of human capital and provide the necessary tools and training for performance as another strategy for the times we are in.

According to her, Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited has embraced a triedand-tested business model that ensures procedures are followed, adding that the best efforts in good governance were already being applied by the organisation.

She said, “We are also embracing an enterprise resource planning programme.”

Her words are coming at a time when the country’s aviation sector looking to become a global force in aviation.

Odukoya stressed that the Airbus A220-300 is a state-of-the-art aircraft that is known for its comfort, efficiency, and performance, making it particularly well-suited for regional operations. She said, “This is so because it can operate from shorter runways and consumes less fuel than larger aircrafts.

Also speaking, Remi Jibodu, Head of Aeronautical and Cargo Services Department for BASL, described as remarkable, the move by Ibom Air, saying such is worthy of emulation by other airlines. He said that Bi-Courtney will continue to encourage Nigerian airlines to work strategically to advance the Nigerian aviation space as well as the continent as a whole. Jibodu added that regional operations will encourage continental trade and contribute significantly to the Nigerian economy and also raise the bar of revenue for the airlines.

“This is a testament to Ibom Air’s dedication to providing a superior travel experience for its customers. The addition of this fuel-efficient and modern aircraft to their fleet will further strengthen their position as a leading regional airline,” Odukoya added.

Stressing that the development was consistent with MMA2’s drive for excellence in airport infrastructure and management, the BASL boss noted that the acquisition of the Airbus A220300 will encourage more Nigerian airlines to consider regional operations. According to her, “We believe that there is a strong market for regional air travel in Nigeria.”

“The Airbus A220-300 is the ideal aircraft for this market, and we anticipate that the success of Ibom Air will encourage other airlines to follow suit,” she said.

Jara is co-owned by you and your wife, Millie, correct? What discussion or conversation inspired the decision to start Jara Beach Resort together?

MARK: Yeah, we’ve had plenty but after 4 years, we’ve found a balance to it. Millie’s from an aviation and hospitality background with lots of experience, coupled with my management background, we get to make things happen pretty quickly. We work around the clock but then there are moments when we’re at the resort, we can enjoy [briefly], so there’s a nice balance to it.

What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered operating Jara Beach Resort so far?

MARK: So many, we could probably write a book on the experiences we’ve had. From environmental challenges to infrastructure. We’re grateful to the government for their efforts to deal with the road, but it’s been a long process; sometimes the journey to the resort takes a lot longer than it should due to the road works, and then there’s our constant drive to innovate, as we keep seeing our ideas elsewhere.

MARK: It was our love for the beach. Diesel is still a huge requirement; We’re also a great place for Day Pass visits so if anyone’s interested fifteen hours a day we’re running generators, but we’ve got wind in a fun day out, maybe with family, the resort opens between turbines and solar for power generation; rainwater for plants, and 11:30 am and 5:30 pm, and there’s snacks, barbeque lunch, pools, paper straws. We’re just trying to be green as much as possible, and cabanas. and there’s also the initiative, JaraForGood, where we do stuff with charities and groups, aimed really at helping children

Short-Let Apartments vs Hotels: The Traveler’s Guide Short-Lets vs Hotels, the age-old debate. Okay, perhaps not necessarily age-old, but this is a debate that has been on for quite a while, especially since the rise of short-let renting platforms like Airbnb. It is a constant debate on the minds of most travellers: short-let vs hotel which is better? This is a rather tough debate to settle. This guide is, therefore, intended to make it a tad less frustrating by weighing up the pros and cons of either and leaving the decision-making process a lot easier for you.

On one hand, there are short-let apartments and they’re exactly what the name implies- apartments you can rent for a short period of time, usually intended for brief stays and vacations. With a short-let, you can expect a more homely atmosphere and a higher degree of comfort when compared to hotels, especially since short-let apartments offer a lot more space than you are likely to find in a hotel room at the same price range. They are cost-effective for longer stays and offer flexibility since you do not have to deal with those pesky check-in/check-out times common with hotels. Short-lets are also cosier and offer more privacy. They are suitable for those who may be travelling with partners and significant others and as such, may require a cosier, more private environment.

But these apartments are not without their cons. Short-lets do not all come with services like scheduled housekeeping or a kitchen to cater to your meal needs as hotels do. And since short-let properties are run by various people, quality

can differ from property to property. The security measures with short-let properties are also often not comparable to those of hotels as safety standards depend on property, owner, and location.

Hotels, on the other hand, have restaurants, gyms, housekeeping, room service, and concierge services, to ensure that all of your needs are met without hassle, and the quality found with hotels is often more consistent. Hotels also offer specialised spaces like conference rooms and event spaces, perfect for those of you who travel for business/work-related reasons. But like shortlets, they’re not without their downsides.

Hotels, generally, cost more than short-lets, especially for longer stays, and they typically offer much less space than you are likely to find in a short-let. Hotels are also much less flexible, with most having rather strict check-in/check-out times and cancellation and refund policies.

That said, there is no definitive answer as to which of these two provides the better experience, as this is all rather relative and subjective. When looking to make a decision, nothing matters more than your priorities and preferences. Space or service?

In the beginning…

During the early 2000s, under the leadership of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the Federal Government embarked on a comprehensive economic reform, extending its reach to the aviation sector. The ageing domestic terminal at Murtala Muhammed International Airport was engulfed by a devastating fire, prompting the government’s call

for a Design-Build-Operate-Transfer (DBOT) bid. Initially awarded to Sanderton Ventures Limited (SVL), the project faltered as SVL struggled to commence work.

2003: The Bi-Courtney Magic

The destiny of the project soon shifted to Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, the reserve bidder, granted the concession to develop, finance, manage, and operate the terminal, alongside ancillary assets like a multi-storey car park, an apron, a four-star hotel, and a conference centre. MMA2 marked an unprecedented milestone as Nigeria’s first major DBOT project of such magnitude, led

by Nigerians.

2007: The Rebirth

President Obasanjo inaugurated MMA2, and operations commenced on the very same day. What started in a modest way in May 2007 has now become a benchmark for measuring how an airport terminal should run. No doubt, the edifice, the first successful Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in the country, has changed the face of the aviation industry in this part of the world.

2020: Accolades upon Accolades

The achievements of MMA2 have garnered widespread acclaim. The terminal has been honoured with numerous accolades, including the Most COVID-19 Compliant Terminal (bestowed by the League of Airports and Aviation Correspondents in 2021) and the Nigerian Airport of the Year 2017 (awarded by WorldStage Limited), among other esteemed recognitions.

Where to Find Santa This Christmas I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the movie ‘Santa Hunters’, but it encapsulates everything I have to say. These kids make it their mission to catch Santa, and they succeed. Now, do you want to catch Santa too?

Don’t bother about it. In this part of the world, he’s not running. You can find him in: Churches: Bringing ‘Father Christmas’ to wow the children with gifts and packs of rice never gets old. Except it’s not actually Santa Claus, but brother Pius from the Youth Church.

Schools: End of the Year party without Santa Claus is not an end of the year party. The pictures (some of the kids laughing, some crying) and the gifts are something to look forward to. Mr Femi, the English teacher, will always wow them.

Community Parties: Some communities actually care about the children, so they hire the scariest looking Santa Claus from a far away place. This Santa Claus does not come from the North Pole, because his suit is soaked inside and smelling of sweat. Even the gifts he gives the children are badly wrapped, because he’s not the joyous kind. What’s important is that he gives them the gifts. This is the kind of Santa that makes the children cry.
