A Tribute to Kjerstin Dellert The yearly O/Modernt festival at Confidencen in June is, as always, a time to reflect: we muse on the culmination of another year of activities; discover fertile ground for new encounters; and see the transformation of things past into things future. More than ever before, however, the passing of Kjerstin Dellert this spring caused me to reflect on the raison d’être of O/Modernt.

It was just over eight years ago that I had the great honour to be asked by Kjerstin Dellert

and Nils-Åke Häggbom to start a festival at Ulriksdal Palace Theatre, Confidencen. O/Modernt was born. It is only now, in retrospect, however, that I understand that the defining features of O/Modernt were in fact at the heart of Kjerstin’s rich, colourful and complex being.

First, let us consider her outlook on music. Naturally, she loved and was fiercely passionate

about the operatic repertoire she performed throughout her life. But she was also open to new music, whether it be early repertoire from the western tradition, jazz, rap, world music or even heavy metal. But Kjerstin’s was by no means a bland eclecticism or unthinking acceptance of every style and genre she encountered. It was a fiery sensitivity to all art that is born of the true spirit of authentic expression. Her response had nothing to do with fashion, nothing to do with what anyone else happened to think, nothing to do with mere exteriors. On the contrary, it was ALL to do with the possibility of establishing genuine and moving connections between two or more people through the medium of sound. And these are exactly the kinds of living connections that O/Modernt seeks to bring into being. Of course, we quite rightly talk a lot about innovation, radical juxtapositions and daring mixes but ultimately all I want to do with O/Modernt is use the power of art to reconnect people with each other and with themselves.

Secondly, when one was with Kjerstin there was no filter. I vividly remember when we

held a tea ceremony at the festival under the guidance of a lady from China. We all sat in reverent silence, trying to enter into the spirit of the occasion, tasting a variety of leaves, and

nodding in polite agreement as we were told about the subtle differences between the various teas: age, provenance, processing methods, growing conditions and so on. Kjerstin persevered for a good while until she reached her own conclusion, which she immediately declared with forthright honesty: ‘It all basically tastes the same, like diluted poo … I’m off home to have some real tea that tastes of something!’ Pleasingly unfiltered à la Kjerstin is precisely how O/Modernt aspires to be: seeking to communicate with audiences directly and honestly, without hiding our vulnerabilities or coating our weaknesses with sugar – just frankly sharing whatever we are doing, knowing that we are giving all we can to do try to do it as well as possible.

Lastly, the moment Kjerstin entered a stage the space was filled with … PRESENCE …

That’s the only way I can describe it. It was an aura, a consummate intensification of the present instant: a quality that had to be experienced, not merely observed. Her wealth of past experience, along with her visions of the future, were distilled in the moment so that past and future seemed reduced to little more than shadowy illusions. Striving to live that present is ultimately the most essential feature of O/Modernt, expressed in the realisation that the present dies as it is reborn in the continual elaboration of the already unknown.

We still have a lot to learn from Kjerstin but I believe we are on the right path. I hope and

pray that O/Modernt may long continue to be the living embodiment of the boundless legacy of Kjerstin.

From One Generation to the Next Just as O/Modernt explores relationships between the historical past and the present, it also celebrates the encounter of older and younger generations in the world of art. The recent passing of Kjerstin Dellert brought to mind the wisdom of a well-known quotation from Albert Einstein: Our death is not an end if we can live on in our children and the younger generation.

It feels particularly timely that last year saw the birth of O/Modernt New Generation. In November 2017 the New Generation was launched with a concert at Musikaliska, performing Elgar’s Enigma Variations with over eighty young instrumentalists. O/Modernt New Generation is a forum for young and talented musicians from Sweden to play alongside world-class professionals.

Individual lessons, masterclasses and workshops are an integral part of the New Generation programme, but it is the actual experience of playing alongside one’s mentor that is arguably the greatest inspiration for the next generation of young musicians. The O/Modernt New Generation scheme has been established in close collaboration with the specialist music school, Lilla Akademien, which the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt praised as a ‘beacon of artistic and academic excellence’.

Det känns därför särskilt lägligt att O/Modernt Ny Generation blev till förra året. I november 2017 lanserades Ny Generation med en konsert på Musikaliska där mer än åttio unga instrumentalister framförde Elgars Enigmavariationer. O/Modernt Ny Generation är ett forum där unga, talangfulla musiker från Sverige får möjlighet att spela tillsammans med professionella musiker i världsklass.

Enskild undervisning, masterklasser och workshopar är en viktig del av Ny Generation, men det är utan tvekan den faktiska upplevelsen av att spela sida vid sida med sin mentor som är den största inspirationen för nästa generations unga musiker. Programmet O/Modernt Ny Generation har skapats i nära samarbete med musikskolan Lilla Akademien, som enligt den estniske kompositören Arvo Pärt är en ”föregångare för både konstnärlig och akademisk briljans”.

Change can also bring hope, however. The point was made to Strauss by Hugo von Hofmannsthal when the two were working on Ariadne auf Naxos (revised 1916): ‘Live on, get over it, transform yourself, surrender the unity of the soul, and still keep oneself intact in the metamorphosis.’ And these are the two poles within which Metamorphosen moves: lament for the seemingly inevitable decline into oblivion along with the glimmer of hope that is an inalienable aspect of change.

The hopeful, sometimes self-assertive, aspect of the lament tradition is a feature that has been brilliantly exploited in modern pop and rock music. For artists including Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Gloria Gaynor and Muse the lament bass was discovered (or perhaps rediscovered) in the blues of the American Deep South. It was the band leader W.C. Handy who brought the blues to the attention of a wider public, after he heard a man in rags at a Mississippi railway station in 1903 singing Goin’ where the Southern cross’ the Dog (a song about intersecting railway lines), accompanying himself on a battered old guitar with bending chromatic descents created on frayed strings with a sliding knife blade.

Capable of inexhaustible variation, this compulsive musical trope took off in jazz, found a place in musical theatre (where it was used by George Gershwin and Richard Rodgers to name but two notable exponents) and permeated the popular songs of Tin Pan Alley. It was given fresh impetus in the 1950s and 1960s in the melancholy ballads of Frank Sinatra, and reconnected with its American roots in the blues of Bob Dylan, before reaching the ears of many millions in the epic metal riffs of Led Zeppelin and a host of other recent rock bands. In many of these cases the lament expresses a human instinct for survival that is manifested as an indomitable air of insolent self-confidence, even egoism. In its serpentine path from Monteverdi to Muse, that is, the ‘gesture of lament’ (to quote Alex Ross) ‘annuls itself and engenders its opposite’, paradoxically turning itself inside out to embrace defiance as well as despair.

IRVING FINKEL speaker Out of Silence: The Recovery of Ancient Babylonian Music It is little short of a miracle that something as elusive and transitory as music can be recovered from the long-vanished world of ancient Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), but during the course of the last century quite remarkable evidence has come to light. This consists on the one hand of delicate archaeological finds, including harps, lyres and wind instruments, as well as representations of them in miniature on cylinder seals or other objects. From these we can build up a picture of the range of instruments used by the ancient Sumerians and the Babylonians, from about 2600 BCE down to the end of the first millennium BCE. These precious finds can be revivified by a remarkable series of ancient inscriptions in Babylonian cuneiform.

Some are hymns or poems which we known to have been sung in temple or courtly circles. Most extraordinary and far more informative are technical works that describe strings, their tuning and intervals, and show that serious theory provided a background for musical performance in that culture. This achievement is owed to philosophical enquiry by Babylonian intelligentsia, at home with numbers, symbolic meanings and the study of the heavens; this allowed them to construct a scheme into which music could be fitted. From a handful of such cuneiform tablets the musical detective can deduce remarkable discoveries and even understand how the one piece of musical notation to which an ancient hymn was set would have sounded.

This illustrated talk will pull back the curtain on this most ancient material and demonstrate the sophisticated nature of oriental music in a world that flourished long before the Greeks.

From the same period comes ‘Automne’ (written in 1878), which again muses on the theme of a recollected idyll, but also explores the distinctive quality of regret. In this case the speaker escapes the ‘melancholy’ days of autumn by recalling the ‘enchanted slopes’ of smiling youth, now irretrievably lost. The thought of the roses that bloomed in those distant days, now evoked in ‘triumphant memory’, brings tears to the speaker’s eyes and also provokes a curious thought: the tears which the speaker now cries had been ‘oubliées’ – ‘forgotten’, perhaps ‘neglected’ – when he or she was young. Memories are newly overlaid with poignant feelings of regret to which the speaker’s youthful self was oblivious.

Edith Piaf, in her own inimitable and unmistakable style, famously regretted nothing: making a bonfire of her memories, she had no use for past pleasures or pains. The finale of this evening’s concert includes one of Piaf’s most loved and admired songs, La Vie en rose, the title of which might most aptly be translated as ‘life through rose-tinted spectacles’: the ‘little sparrow’, as she was nicknamed, embraces love’s pleasing illusions with consummate self-abandon. Co-written by Piaf, the track was released in 1947 and went on to become one of the seminal ballads of the second half of the twentieth century.

Reynaldo Hahn astonishingly composed Chanson d’automne (‘Autumn Song’), from his collection Chansons grises, around 1891 when he was just sixteen. The text by Verlaine describes an almost opiate state of languid helplessness that is conveyed by the restrained setting, with the accompaniment echoing the vocal line to create an appropriate sense of plaintive lassitude. Les Feuilles mortes (‘Fallen Leaves’) was composed by Joseph Kosma with lyrics by the French poet Jacques Prévert, and recorded in 1945 by Yves Montand. The following year it featured in the movie, Les Portes de la nuit, which starred Montand. The original French version was followed in 1947 by ‘Autumn Leaves’, the extremely popular English language reworking of the song, with lyrics by the American songwriter Johnny Mercer. Popularised by Jo Stafford, ‘Autumn Leaves’ quickly established itself as a pop and jazz standard.

Tanken på rosorna som blommade i det förgångna och nu enbart är ett ”triumferande minne”, griper berättaren till tårar och framkallar även en märkvärdig tanke: tårarna som berättaren fäller nu var ”oubliées” – ”glömda”, kanske till och med ”ignorerade” – i ungdomens dagar. Minnena får ett nytt lager av sorg över det som berättarens ungdomliga jag ännu nu var lyckligt ovetande om.

Edith Piaf ångrade som bekant ingenting. Med sin egna, omisskännliga stil satte hon eld på sina minnen, för hon hade ingen användning för förgången glädje eller sorg. Under sista delen av kvällens konsert hör vi en av Piafs mest älskade och beundrade sånger, La vie en rose, vars namn kan översättas till ”livet genom rosa glasögon”. Den ”lilla sparven”, som hon kallades, omfamnade kärlekens behagliga illusion med fulländad hängivenhet. Spåret, som Piaf själv var med och skrev, släpptes 1947 och kom att bli en av de mest inflytelserika balladerna under 1900-talets andra hälft.

This exquisite song from Act 5 of King Arthur (1691) is part of the masque that forms the incongruous conclusion to a work that is supercharged with political tension. The librettist, poet laureate John Dryden, began the first version of the text in the early 1680s, amid the turmoil caused by a parliamentary attempt to prevent Charles’s brother, the Roman Catholic James, from succeeding him to the throne. Charles won the day, and in 1683 Dryden inserted the prologue of his libretto into a pro-Stuart allegorical tragédie lyrique entitled Albion and Albanius with music by Louis Grabu. Charles’s unexpected death in February 1685 meant that the premiere of Albion and Albanius had to be postponed, however. It eventually opened in June, but was cut off in its prime when rebel forces made a failed attempt to depose the newly crowned James II. Around this time, following his royal master, Dryden converted to Catholicism, but when James was subsequently dethroned in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the poet found himself on the wrong side of history. With the accession of William and Mary (both Protestants), he lost his court posts. Short of money and alienated from the ruling establishment, Dryden turned to the theatre.

This is the backstory that underpins the nostalgia of the ‘Fairest Isle’, which, in the best traditions of pastoral from Virgil to Brexit, turns out to be a lament for a place that never was. In the preface to Amphitryon (1690), for which Purcell provided incidental music, Dryden is full of praise for his much younger collaborator, commenting that ‘we have at length found an English-man, equal with the best abroad’. With the benefit of hindsight, we can see that Dryden breathed his sigh of relief too soon.

A glance at the dates of the British composers represented in this evening’s concert reminds us of the fact that, between the premature death of Purcell in 1695 and the time of (say) Elgar, the ‘Fairest Isle’ experienced a dearth of home-grown musical creators – Britain was, in the unforgettable phrase of one German critic, the ‘Land without Music’.

The lack was often absurdly put down to genetics, but the actual reasons were much more hardheaded. If it’s cheaper to buy it, why bother making it? During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Britain was the pre-eminent centre for international trade and manufacturing. London, in particular, boasted great wealth and cultivated a taste for imported luxuries. Funded by a ticket-buying public, the capital’s lucrative concert life was hugely attractive to international stars. From Handel’s arrival in London in 1712 through to the many visits paid to the British Isles by Dvořák in the 1880s and 1890s, travelling virtuosi, impresarios and a long line of stellar foreign composers were the shaping impetus behind ‘English’ classical music.

hailed as a ‘great composer’, whose works ‘hold the attention of his countrymen more decisively than do those of any other native composer’.This evening’s concert is punctuated by the three movements of Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, written in 1892, but probably based on a lost suite composed some years previously that portrayed, according to Elgar’s wife, ‘rivers fringed with wavering reeds’. The Serenade sublimates such candid pictorialism to create the abstract emotional and spiritual power characteristically associated with Elgar. It embodies an ‘unfolding harmonic mystery’ (to quote Brian Newbould), particularly in the slow second movement. First publicly performed in Antwerp in 1896, the work was subsequently described by Elgar as a personal favourite.

Frank Bridge studied violin and composition at the Royal College of Music, going on to win a scholarship in 1899 that enabled him to work for four years under Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. Herbert Howells later recalled that the teacherly criticisms Stanford’s pupils most feared were ‘slovenliness’ and ‘vulgarity’ – charges that could in no way be levelled against Bridge’s delicate and meticulous settings of two texts by Shelley, Autumn and Music, When Soft Voices Die (both 1903). In these two songs, as in The Bee, a 1913 setting of a lyric by Tennyson, Bridge is guided by the poetry. Deeply attentive to the imagery and prosody of the words, he evokes a plaintive and (in The Bee) poignantly sparkling sense of the pre-1914 Romantic culture that could still find ready spiritual consolation in nature.

In 1927, aged fourteen, Britten was introduced to Bridge by his viola teacher, Audrey Alston. Having looked at some of Britten’s work, Bridge invited the young composer to take lessons with him in London, and the two struck up a friendship that lasted until Bridge’s death in 1941. Britten’s Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge (1937) turns on a dual crisis. Britten takes his theme from another of Bridge’s pre-war works, the Three Idylls for String Quartet (1906), but interprets it in the light of the violent awakening caused by World War I, as a consequence of which the pacifist Bridge embraced continental modernism.Written amid the growing unease felt prior to the outbreak of World War II, Britten’s Variations pays kaleidoscopic tribute to the high culture of European music – ‘fragments’ (as Wilfrid Mellers remarks, quoting Eliot’s Waste Land) ‘shored against our ruins’.

The 250th anniversary of Purcell’s death fell in 1945, and around that time Britten began recasting Purcell’s music – working together with his musical ancestor, as it were, in a collaborative effort that extended across the intervening centuries. Britten was emboldened to undertake the task partly on account of his understanding that, in Purcell’s time, the music that was written down was the starting point for an

inevitably personal interpretation on the part of the performer – ‘the figured basses in Purcell’s day’, he remarked, ‘were realised in a manner personal to the player’. Britten’s own personal approach to Purcell was intended to give renewed voice to ‘that mixture of clarity, brilliance, tenderness and strangeness which shines out in all Purcell’s music’.

Similar to Britten’s attitude to Purcell, the guiding impulse behind O/Modernt’s distinctive realisations of the music of the ‘Fairest Isle’ is to look at the old in the light of the new, allowing each to reinvigorate the other. Alongside our explorations of more recent British music, therefore, we also go back to the past, revisiting Purcell’s ‘Fairest Isle’ from King Arthur (mentioned above) as well as his setting of Psalm 102 from the Book of Common Prayer: ‘Hear My Prayer, O Lord’, composed around 1682 when Purcell took up the post of Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey. Preceding this is the devotional meditation ‘Drop, Drop, Slow Tears’ for which the music by Orlando Gibbons was first put together with Phineas Fletcher’s words by Ralph Vaughan Williams for his English Hymnal (1906).

Finally, Thomas Morley’s Second Dirge Anthem, ‘Man that is born of a woman’, written for the funeral of Elizabeth I (1603), became standard repertoire for such state occasions and was accordingly performed for the interment of Queen Mary in 1695. By that date, however, Morley’s setting of ‘Thou knowest, Lord’, the sequel to ‘Man that is born of a woman’ in the Burial Service in the Book of Common Prayer, had somehow been lost. Purcell therefore supplied a new version, setting the magnificent and portentous text in a slightly archaic style to match that of his predecessor, but infusing it with a weighty emotional intensity that exceeds Morley’s idiom.

After travelling for six years, meeting with many adventures, the hero reaches Carthage (near Tunis in modern Tunisia). There he has forced to flee her native country. Dido is the founding queen of Carthage.

According to Virgil, Aeneas spends a year in Carthage, languishing in Dido’s embrace. They consummate their love on a hunting trip, while taking shelter in a cave from a violent storm contrived by the goddess Juno. When the lovers emerge from the cave Dido considers herself married to Aeneas. Soon afterwards, however, Jupiter orders Mercury to remind Aeneas of his divinely ordained destiny. Putting duty before love, the hero piously but brutally renounces Dido and sets sail, leaving the rejected queen to commit suicide.

Turning to Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, with a libretto by Nahum Tate, we find a radically altered interpretation of the story, in which the thematic burdens carried by the two principal characters are reversed.

Virgil resolves the conflict between love and duty in favour of Aeneas’s imperial mission, in which context Dido is hardly more than collateral damage. For Purcell and Tate, by contrast, Dido is the opera’s singular

emotional and dramatic focus. Aeneas is the one who plays a mere bit part: he has no meaningful aria, his

Between the time of Virgil and that of Purcell the story of Dido and Aeneas clearly underwent some radical changes that reflect the changing outlooks of artists and audiences. If we reach still further back in time, from Virgil to Homer, we can add even more facets to the figure of Aeneas. Transported through time and space, Dido and Aeneas are like the river of Heraclitus, always the same and yet always changing, and as we return to Purcell’s opera in the twenty-first century, we are inevitably drawn into that flux: transported to Greece, Rome and Carthage via the intricately manifold ethos of late seventeenth-century England as it is expressed in the extraordinary sound world of Purcell. For this journey, the opera house is our time machine, our TARDIS (as fans of Doctor Who would call it), and there could surely be no more evocative example of the magical conveyance than Confidencen.

Revisiting the past through the medium of art, we encounter the fact that history and time travel are more closely allied than might sometimes be supposed. It’s an alliance that has been brilliant exploited in numerous familiar stories, including J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, which entertain possibilities of moving through time and space in ways that sidestep the laws of physics. A notable recent instance is found in the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, where the device used by Harry and Hermione to transport themselves elsewhen (a rare but allowable word!) looks something like a cross between an hourglass and an astrolabe, and is called the Time-Turner.

This text of this song retells the myth of the hunter Actaeon, who comes across the goddess Diana, bathing in a pool with her nymphs, and cannot tear his mortal gaze away from her beautiful form.

Diana punishes the voyeur by turning him into a stag who is soon tragically torn to pieces by his own hounds. What does the introduction of this tale into the libretto reveal about the chief protagonists of the opera? Though one might instinctively suggest there must be a correspondence between the two wronged women, Diana and Dido, that cannot be the case. On the contrary, in another unexpected instance of role reversal, the Queen of Carthage might much more plausibly be represented by the ruttish Actaeon: as Actaeon is destroyed by his hounds, so Dido is consumed by her own desire.

The moral that links these two time-honoured the tales relates to the human capacity for self-destruction. From Purcell to Potter the external world provides the theatrical backdrop for a subjective drama of inwardness. Human tragedy may harness great historical forces but it is, essentially, a conflict that takes place within each individual. This is the point made in Act II of Dido and Aeneas by the Chorus when they reflect upon Dido’s impending suicide: Great minds against themselves conspire, And shun the cure they most desire.

Sången återberättar historien om jägaren Aktaion som får syn på gudinnan Diana när hon badar i en källa med sina nymfer och inte kan slita blicken från henne. Diana straffar voyeuren genom att förvandla honom till en hjort som snart slits i bitar av sina egna hundar. Vad avslöjar den här berättelsen i librettot om operans huvudroller? Även om den första instinkten ofta är att det måste finnas en likhet mellan de båda förfördelade kvinnorna, Diana och Dido, så kan detta inte stämma. Är det inte mer troligt att det är den liderlige Aktaion, i ett fall av omvända roller, som representerar drottningen av Karthago? För precis som Aktaion slits sönder av sina egna hundar, så slits Dido sönder av sina egna lustar.

Moralen som förenar de båda hävdvunna berättelserna handlar om människans kapacitet till självdestruktion. Från Purcell till Potter utgör den externa världen en teatralisk bakgrund till ett subjektivt drama om introspektion. Julian Arp, born in 1981, studied at the Academy of Music ’Hanns Eisler’ in Berlin with Boris Pergamenschikow. He continued his studies with David Geringas and Eberhard Feltz. As a soloist and chamber musician Julian Arp appears regularly at festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn, Beauvais, Montreux, SoNoRo Bucharest, Stellenbosch, Stift Festival, the Oxford Chamber Music Festival, and IMS Prussia Cove. The Duo Arp/Frantz has released three CDs. In the words of Fono Forum: ‘They make music into pure celebration. It all sounds and sings.’ Contemporary composers, including Odeh-Tamimi, Koch, Nemtsov and Dinescu have written pieces for Julian Arp. He is a co-founder of the festival Zeitkunst which has been a guest at the Centre Pompidou, Radialsystem Berlin, Israel, England, and Rio de Janeiro. Julian regularly gives master classes in Germany and abroad, and teaches at the University for Arts in Graz, Austria.

A saxophonist and composer from New Zealand, Hayden Chisholm studied in Cologne with a DAAD scholarship before continuing his music studies in Japan and India. He developed a new microtonal system, termed ‘split scales’, for saxophone, which he premiered on his debut solo CD Circe. Since then his compositions have been recorded

by BBC and WDR radios and he has toured and recorded extensively worldwide. He has created music for several Rebecca Horn installations, as well as composing scores for her films. He has taught at Universities throughout the world, and gives yearly masterclasses in Greece. He curates the annual Plushmusic festival in Cologne and Bremen. In 2013 he released the 13-CD boxed set, 13 Views of the Heart’s Cargo, and received the SWR Jazz Prize. In 2015 he was improviser-in-residence in Moers, and opened the Moers Jazz Festival.

In 2016 he released his second 13-CD box, Cusp of Oblivion, and directed his first short film Sisyphus Runs.

Born and raised in Tbilisi, Georgian pianist Nino Gvetadze leads a busy international career. She has received various awards, including Second Prize, Press Prize and Audience Award at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition and was the winner of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award.

Nino has performed with conductors including Michel Plasson, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and John Axelrod, and with orchestras such as Rotterdam, The Hague, Seoul and Netherlands Philharmonic, Münchner Symphoniker, Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Nino was featured in BBC4 documentary the Story of Music and played Live on Dutch National Television on the instruments of Hector Berlioz and Vladimir Horowitz. Her repertoire stretches from Mozart and Beethoven to Chopin, Liszt, Debussy and Prokofiev, and embraces contemporary music. In 2017 Nino Gvetadze signed with Challenge Classics, and her album Ghosts: Chopin 24 Preludes and Selected Pieces was released in January.

Estonian conductor, violinist and violist, Andres Kaljuste recently joined the roster of the Estonian National Opera and regularly conducts the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Symphony Orchestra.

He completed his orchestral conducting masters degree in 2017 at the Sibelius Academy while simultaneously appeared as the guest-principal viola of the Helsinki Philharmonic during the past three seasons.

Andres’ first conducting season included debuts with orchestras including Helsinki Philharmonic, Tampere Philharmonic, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Odense Symphony Orchestra, Oulu Sinfonia, Pori Sinfonietta and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.

In autumn 2016 he stepped in at very short notice to conduct Lahti Sinfonia in a programme of Vaughan Williams, Barber and Dutilleux, to critical acclaim.

Reto Bieri was born in Zug, Switzerland, in 1975, and grew up listening to Swiss folk music before discovering the world of classical music.

He studied the clarinet with Francois Benda in Basel and at the Juilliard School in New York with Charles Neidich.

His subsequent musical development was also strongly influenced by chamber music lessons from composer György Kurtag and pianist Krystian Zimerman. In 2001 Reto won the UNESCO-sponsored International Rostrum for Young Performers award, and since then has been invited to play all over the world as a soloist and chamber musician. He plays with various orchestras, including the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra (Moscow Radio), the Prague Chamber Orchestra, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Hungarian Philharmonic, Tibor Varga Festival Orchestra, the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, Kremerata Baltica, Camerata Schweiz, and the Orchestra Pablo Sarasate Pamplon, and has worked with world-class conductors, including Vladimir Fedoseyev, Kurt Masur, Roger Norrington, Tibor Varga and Howard Griffiths.

The Italian cellist Claude Frochaux began playing the cello at the Suzuki Talent Center, then at the Conservatory of Turin. Studies followed in Frankfurt, Essen and Madrid.

As a sought-after and passionate chamber musician, he is a guest at festivals including Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Mozartfest Würzburg, Beethovenfest Bonn, Oxford, Enescu Bucharest and performs at noted venues including Wigmore Hall and Kings Place London, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Konzerthaus Berlin and Laeiszhalle Hamburg; he is broadcast regularly on many radio stations: BR, WDR, SWR, Deutschlandfunk and Radio Clasica.

In 2008 he founded the Monte Piano Trio, which has won numerous international prizes (Maria Canals Barcelona, Brahms Austria, Schumann Frankfurt, Folkwang Prize and many more) and regularly gives concerts. He collaborates with groups including Ensemble Midwest Denmark, Amici Ensemble Frankfurt and Ensemble Ruhr. Claude is founder and artistic director of Kammermusikfest Sylt, which takes place every year on the German island of Sylt.

Born in Graz, Manuel Hofer studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna (Siegfried Führlinger), the University Mozarteum Salzburg (Thomas Riebl) and the Musikhochschule ‘Hanns Eisler’ Berlin (Lars Anders Tomter and Tabea Zimmermann); he also studied chamber music with Rainer Schmid (Hagen Quartet), Eberhard Feltz (Academy of Music ‘Hanns Eisler’) and György Kurtag. Manuel was the first and only viola player to win the Austrian Klassikpreis Gradus ad Parnassum and performs concert and radio recordings with the Armida Quartet. His interest in early music has led to collaborations with Dorothee Oberlinger, Andreas Scholl, Anthony Romaniuk and Marco Testori. As a laureate of the International Stockhausen Foundation, he is also committed to performing the music of the present, and has had a work dedicated to him and Stuttgarter Kammerorchester by Samir Odeh-Tamimi. In addition to being the principal violist of Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Manuel has performed as soloist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Orchester de Chambre de Lausanne and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

Born in Argentina, Cecilia Knudtsen began her music studies at the Conservatory C.L. Buchardo in Buenos Aires and the University of La Plata. She then moved to Switzerland where she studied viola da gamba with Arianne Maurette and Roberto Gini at the Centre de musique ancienne de Genève, and violone with David Sinclair at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. She performs with European ensembles including Chiome d’Oro, Harmonia Instrumentalis, Cappella Mediterranea and La Batalla, and has collaborated with Isabella d’Este, Lucidarium, Les Dominos, Fanfarre du Loup, Ensemble Concerto, Le Concert Brisé, Musica Fiorita and Elyma. Cecilia has recorded with the ensembles Chiome d’Oro, Concerto, Musica Fiorita, Isabella d’Este and La Batalla. She teaches viola da gamba, ensemble music and improvisation at the Conservatoire Populaire of Music, Dance and Theater of Geneva and the didactics of early music at the HEM of Geneva.

Gareth Lubbe is professor of viola at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany.

For several years he was Principal Violist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig under Riccardo Chailly while teaching at the ‘Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’ Conservatory. Gareth appears as soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, America, Africa and Asia. As an overtone singer, he performs and gives active lectures around the world, interpreting the phenomenon of multiphonic singing to demonstrate how everyone can realise the possibilities of sound production on their own natural inner instrument. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Gareth received his first musical education on piano and violin at the age of four, and made youthful debuts as soloist and conductor. In 1994 he performed at the presidential inauguration of Nelson Mandela in Pretoria. After finishing school, he went to study in Germany but continues to nurture his love for the mother continent, performing and teaching there on a regular basis.

Johannes Marmén studied violin at Lilla Akademien, Stockholm, from 2006, winning a full scholarship in 2008 for the summer chamber music course Musica Mundi in Belgium, where he received coaching from Paul Badura-Skoda and members of the Talich quartet. In 2009 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London where he currently studies violin with Professor Berent Korfker. As a chamber musician Marmen has performed with pianists Bengt-Åke Lundin, Benedicte Haid, and Johan Farjot. He is also a founding member of the Leonhard String Quartet. Johannes was concertmaster of the Lilla Akademien Symphony orchestras (2008–9) and concertmaster of the Swedish National Youth Symphony Orchestra from 2010, leading performances at Berwaldhallen, Chicago Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall, directed by Esa-Pekka Salonen (2010) and Tonu Kaljuste (2011–12). Prizes and awards include the Ingrid and Per Welin Scholarship from the Swedish Royal Academy of Music and the Kjerstin Dellert Confidencen Scholarship.

Henrik Måwe, born in Sweden in 1981, is regarded as one of the foremost Swedish pianists of his generation. He studied with Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and with Staffan Scheja at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He has performed widely throughout Europe, as well as in South Africa and the USA. In the spring of 2008 he gave his debut recital in Stockholm and performed as a soloist with the Stockholm Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Henrik also appears regularly on TV, radio and other broadcast media. A passionate chamber musician, he has collaborated with some of Sweden’s foremost instrumentalists and singers, including the world-famous baritone Håkan Hagegård.

Henrik has also branched out into jazz and improvisation, and has played recitals made up entirely of improvisation. In 2008 he was awarded Sweden’s most valuable and important scholarship for young musicians, the Rosenborg-Gehrmans scholarship.

Marzi Nyman was born in 1979 in the small town of Lohja in rural Finland. His parents were musical and luckily made him take piano lessons from the age of six. Marzi studied classical piano for ten years, until, in his teens, he realised that guitar is the king of all instruments and started learning it with fierce passion. Marzi started his studies in 1998 at the Sibelius-Academy (jazz department) and is still studying, mainly composition. He is very interested in various types of performing and music-making. He has composed for orchestras, chamber groups, theatre productions, movies and written songs that he performs himself. He has played with a colourful array of people and collectives in Finland and abroad. Collaborators include Lenny Pickett, Tim Ries (the Rolling Stones), Anu Komsi, Osmo Vänskä, Hannu Lintu, Igudesman & Joo (the League of Xtrordinary Musicians) and Pekka Kuusisto. He has been selected as Pori Jazz Artist (2003), and won the prestigious Teosto Award in 2006.

Marzi is driven by curiosity and the urge to connect with people, and that’s why he feels privileged to be a part of O/Modernt.

Leandro Mancini-Olivos is a Chilean drummer and percussionist who was born in Stockholm and is now based in London. Leandro studied music theory, piano and guitar from an early age, going on to study percussion with Ricardo Ruiz in Santiago de Chile. In 2009 he settled in the UK where he continued his studies in drum performance at the London Centre of Contemporary Music. Since 2010 he has toured the UK extensively with several bands and artists. Playing world music, jazz, art rock and pop, Leandro has performed at venues including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Hackney Empire, Brighton Dome, Hampton Court Palace, Glasgow Royal Festival Hall and at music festivals, notably Glastonbury and the EFG London Jazz Festival. Between 2013 and 2015 he was privileged to be part of an operatic baroque play for children called Next Stop: Blue, produced and performed at the Luxembourg Philharmonie, Berlin Konzerthaus and the Vienna Konzerthaus.

Priya Mitchell grew up in Oxford and started playing the violin when she was four. ‘I was unable to concentrate on anything, and my parents despaired.

The violin was the best remedy – it allowed me to focus and dream at the same time.’ She went to the Yehudi Menuhin School where her teacher was David Takeno. Afterwards she studied in Vienna and then with Zachar Bron in Lübeck. Priya loves to play both as soloist and chamber musician. Earlier this year she was invited to be artist-in-residence for a week at Kings Place in London, and has recently performed in Copenhagen, Istanbul, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Kuhmo and Seville. In 2000 she founded the Oxford Chamber Music Festival because she wanted to bring her musician friends to Oxford and also because she relishes what she calls ‘musical matchmaking’: ‘how else could I bring together musicians I was certain would fall in love with each other musically? Oxford is the ideal setting to make this alchemy happen.’

Karl Nyhlin, born in Umeå in northern Sweden in 1974, studied lute and continuo playing in Stockholm and Malmö.

He was subsequently awarded several major scholarships, including a Fulbright Award that gave him the opportunity to travel to America where he studied with Nigel North at IU Bloomington, Indiana, graduating there in 2002. Today Karl is known as one of the leading lute players of his generation.

Based in Stockholm, he works regularly with distinguished early music ensembles across Europe and has performed in over thirty-five countries on six continents. He also frequently performs at opera houses, including Drottningholm Palace and the Royal Opera in Stockholm, as well as Oslo and Vienna. Karl can be heard on numerous recordings as an ensemble musician, and has released two critically acclaimed solo CDs, The Jacobean Lutenists and Works for Lute by David Kellner and Silvius Leopald Weiss.

Christoph Sommer was born in Lutherstadt Wittenberg (Germany) and received his first musical education on the piano and the guitar. Passionate about early music, he soon developed a fascination for lute instruments and their repertoire. Past engagements include concerts with Ensemble Holland Baroque, Ensemble Elyma (G. Garrido), Dunedin Consort (John Butt), Cappella Mediterranea (Leonardo García Alarcón), the vocal ensembles Vox Luminis and Amacord; he has also worked with the Pera Ensemble, Ensemble Chiome d’Oro, the Konkinklijk Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam (Jan Willem de Vriend), the Rotterdam Philharmonic (Paul Goodwin), Vienna Philharmonic (Emannuelle Haïm), Attaignant Consort (Kate Clark) and the Staatsorchester Hamburg (Alessandro di Marchi and Simon Hewett).

THE AGIOS LAVRENTIOS BRASS BAND

O/MODERNT CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

O/MODERNT NEW GENERATION

The Agios Lavrentios Brass Band was born ten years ago in the village of Agios Lavrentios on Mount Pilion in Greece. Every summer, musicians from around the world meet for the now legendary ‘music village’ weeks of concerts and workshops.

The musicians in the band, the world’s only brass band without any actual brass in it, come from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Greece, Portugal, Germany and Italy. Saxophones of all shapes and sizes form the core of the group, and the allGreek rhythm section provides the Balkan and New Orleans rhythms. Having forged their sound and spirit at Agios Lavrentios, the band’s mission is to make their music a worldwide phenomenon.

Directed by violinist Hugo Ticciati, the O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra is an integral part of O/Modernt. Comprised of top young players from all over Europe, the orchestra performs eclectic and adventurous programmes, ranging from arrangements of medieval motets to Bach, Webern and Metallica. The orchestra collaborates with world-renowned soloists, and has quickly gained an international reputation, with performances at the Wigmore Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, Wiener Musikverein and Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Amsterdam. O/Modernt players also participate in a wide range of outreach and educational projects in Sweden, the UK and further afield in India.

O/Modernt is always searching for new ways to encourage the next generation of young musicians. We are delighted to have established the O/Modernt New Generation project, which was launched in Stockholm in 2017. The initiative includes a Stockholm-based youth orchestra which will provide opportunities for instrumentalists to perform in concert alongside members from the O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra as well as world-class soloists. There will also be a series of international masterclasses, open rehearsals for young people and exchanges, with a focus on the UK throughout 2018. More information will follow about opportunities for young people to be involved in these inspirational activities.

THE SWEDISH WIND ENSEMBLE

Sara Ekman studied dance at the Balletakademien in Stockholm and is now also an actor and choreographer/director.

For many years she worked as a dancer in Copenhagen, London and Sweden with Dansstationens Turnékompani, and she has featured in performances by Kajsa Giertz, Gunilla Heilborn, Wies Merkx, Dorte Olesen and Maria Sundqvist.

Sara worked at Malmö Stadsteater, performing in Carmen and King Oedipus, and at Helsingborg Stadsteater in adaptations of Nils Holgersson’s underbara resa and Pelle Erövraren. At Operaverkstan/Malmö Opera, Sara took part in Träskoprinssessan, Flygande trumman, Min älskade Pierrot, Faust and Helena, Tusen och en natt, Drottningens juvelsmycke and Var är du Proserpin.

She debuted as a choreographer in the Opera Mästersångaren, and has choreographed Vivaldi’s Winter, Troll i kulisserna, Döden säger nej, Lucretia Borgia. She made her directorial debut with Andrejs längtan.

David Nondorf was born in Germany and received his dance education at Gymnasium Essen-Werden, Germany, and Stedelijk Instituut voor Ballet, Antwerpen, Belgium; he has been working as a dancer since 1999. David moved to Sweden in 2004 to join Skånes Dansteater, Malmö, where he worked with choreographers Charles Linehan, Örjan Andersson, Virpi Pahkinen, Didy Veldman and Rui Horta. Between 2007 and 2011 he worked with Jasmin Vardimon in London, taking part in touring projects in the UK and internationally. David went on to work with Norrdans, Härnösand, performing works by Martin Forsberg, Ohad Naharin, Yossi Berg and Oded Graf, and Marcos Morau. In Stockholm David worked with Ina Christel Johannessen in her production Come Back to See Us at KulturhusetStadsteatern and with Sebastian Matthias in the interactive dance performance Intergalactic Underwater Palace, a co-production between Riksteatern and Cullbergbaletten. Most recently, David started touring with the Claire Parsons Company, performing throughout Sweden as well as in Norway and South Korea.

The Swedish Wind Ensemble is a resident orchestra at Musikaliska, Stockholm’s oldest concert hall. The group prides itself on the breadth of its repertoire, its genre-crossing collaborations and its commitment to gender equality in its programming. The Swedish Wind Ensemble started as a band directed by Stockholm’s public transport company, SL – then called Stockholm’s Tramway Men’s Band. Now in its 110th year, it is a modern, bold and innovative ensemble. The orchestra performs mainly in Stockholm, but has established itself as one of Scandinavia’s leading wind ensembles with a growing international reputation. From 2016 the young Norwegian rising star Catrine Winnes is the orchestra’s artistic director and principal conductor.

The British vocal ensemble VOCES8 is proud to inspire people through music and share the joy of singing. Touring extensively throughout Europe, North America and Asia, the group performs repertoire from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary commissions and arrangements. In recent seasons VOCES8 has performed at venues including the Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Bozar Brussels, Cité de la Musique Paris, Vienna Konzerthaus, Tokyo Opera City, National Centre for the Performing Arts Beijing, the Shanghai Concert Hall and Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall. Artistic collaborations have included the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, period ensembles Florilegium and L’Arpeggiata, violinist Hugo Ticciati and pianist/composer Jonathan Dove. VOCES8 is a Decca Classics Artist and has released albums that have reached the top of the Classical Charts.

The ensemble’s innovative education work has received praise from UNESCO, and since 2005 the group has raised £1 million towards music education.

Karolina Blixt began her classical music training in Sweden at the Vadstena College of Lied and Opera at the age of 27, after studying painting and sculpture at the Gotland School of Arts and Social Science, and later moved to Stockholm University College of Opera where she made her breakthrough as Xerxes (Handel) at the Drottningholm Theatre in 2007. Karolina has since worked on opera stages and concert halls around the world. In 2010 she made her debut at the Festival d’Aix en Provence singing Phaèdre in Hippolyte et Aricie by Rameau with Sir William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, directed by the legendary New York choreographer Trisha Brown. Karolina is also committed to developing and refining the art of the vocalist. Her opera show Opera für Alle! has enjoyed huge success at the Stockholm City Theatre/Klara Soppteater, and she takes inspiration from Gustav Mahler, Kurt Weill, Yma Sumac, Francis Poulenc, Benjamin Britten, Mats Ek, Birgitta Egerbladh and Lars Rudolphsson.

David Lundblad studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, graduating with a diploma in 1999. He has also a diploma in church music from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm (1997).

He has worked with leading ensembles including the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Opera Orchestra, Gothenburg Opera Chorus, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Wind Orchestra, Finnish Radio Chamber Choir and Dalasinfoniettan.

He has also appeared on the radio and tv, and has made several CD recordings. David has had the priviledge of studying with distinguished conductors, notably Eri Klas, Jorma Panula Matti Hyökki, Eric Ericson and Gustaf Sjökvist. He currently holds conducting positions with Dalasinfoniettan, Falu kammarkör, Borlänge kammarkör and Dalasinfoniettans kör

Hanna Ohlson Nordh graduated from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH) in June 2017 with a Master’s degree in orchestral conducting; she also studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart.

While still a student Hanna worked with several professional Swedish orchestras, including the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra and Norrlands Operan’s Symphony Orchestral; in Germany she worked with the Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen and Philharmonische Kammerorchester Dresden. She was also given the distinguished honour of conducting the KMH Symphony Orchestra and Choir at the TV-broadcasted inauguration ceremony of the college’s new campus. In January 2018 Hanna was awarded second prize in a conducting competition with London Classical Soloists. Her most recent engagements include concerts with Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Östgöta Wind orchestra and as assistant conductor at Dalhalla Opera.

The English-born conductor, pianist and harpsichordist Mark Tatlow was appointed Artistic Director of Drottningholms Slottsteater in 2006. Mark was educated at Rugby School, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, Goldsmiths College, London, the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio. Initially appointed to the music staffs of the Glyndebourne Festival and Kent Opera, Mark first came to Drottningholms Slottsteater in 1985. Over the past thirty years he has conducted many neglected baroque masterpieces as well as the standard operatic repertoire. His engagement with the education of young musicians has spanned his entire career, from pioneering the Education Project of Kent Opera in the 1980s to the University College of Opera, Stockholm, where in 2002 he was elected Professor of Musical Studies, becoming Dean in 2009. He was awarded the honorary medal of the Friends of Drottningholms Slottsteater in 1996, and the Wallenstam Prize in 2008.

Lena Hoel, one of Sweden’s most versatile opera singers, has collaborated with noted Swedish composers Anders Eliasson, Daniel Börtz, Thomas Jennefelt, Sven-David Sandström and Arne Mellnäs, who have composed music and even whole operas especially for her. She has also worked with international names including Sofia Gubaidulina and Alfred Schnittke, collaborations that have been released as recordings. During her time at the Royal Opera of Stockholm Lena has performed over thirty lead roles, including Fiordiligi/Cosí fan tutti, Sophie/Der Rosenkavalier, Tatjana/Eugen Onegin and Mimí/La Bohéme. She has been directed by Ingmar Bergman, Lars Rudolfsson and Götz Friedrich, worked with conductors such as Leif Segerstam, Sixten Ehrling and Esa-Pekka Salonen and performed alongside the Britten Quartet, the Chilingerian Quartet, Georgian Quartet and the Tchaikovsky Trio amongst others. Lena is passionate about educating the next generation and gives many lessons and masterclasses. She has won the Jenny Lind and Christina Nilsson awards.

Mezzo-soprano Luciana Mancini was born in Sweden, but has Chilean roots. She received her BA in Classical Singing and Early Music Performance Practice from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in Holland, where she subsequently joined the Opera Studio. In 2009 she received her Master’s degree, writing a thesis on Italian monodies of the 1600s. Luciana has sung under conductors including René Jacobs, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Enrico Onofri, Pablo Heras-Casado, Neeme Järvi and Juanjo Mena; she has also collaborated with numerous ensembles, notably L’Arpeggiata, La Fenice, Lautten Compagney, Divino Sospiro, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, Ensemble Matthäus and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, singing at venues including the Staatsoper Berlin, Theater an der Wien, Drottningholm Palace Theatre, Carnegie Hall, the Opera Comique and the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth. Luciana has worked with many stage directors, notably Benjamin Lazar, Sigrid T’Hooft, Pablo Maritano, Achim Freyer, and with the choreographer Sasha Waltz.

Hans Olle Persson, born 19 April 1958 in Norrköping, is a Swedish opera and concert singer (baritone). He grew up in Norrköping and has collaborated on a number of occasions with ensembles at Linköping University. Hans studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm; apart from a diploma in solo singing he also has a teaching and vocational education degree from the university. He is a prominent interpreter of German romantic song repertoire and has performed in many operas at Folkoperan. In addition to traditional operas and baritone parts in oratorios and passions, Hans has performed larger roles in newly composed works, including Nils Lindberg’s Requiem (1993). He is also a frequent guest on radio and tv, and has made many recordings. He is a committed musical educator who regularly offers master classes around the Nordic region. Hans also plays violin and sometimes performs folk music with his wife, Lena Willemark, whom he married in1984.

As violinist and director Hugo Ticciati imbibes all possible forms of creativity. From performing premieres at Carnegie Hall, improvising with monks in India, to devising innovative programs at his festival O/Modernt, Hugo embraces life in its transient fragility and beauty, never forgetting to return to the greatest of all musics – silence.

MICHAELA BEIJER translator

DR. IRVING FINKEL curator Michaela Beijer has more than ten years’ experience as a professional translator of everything from EU regulations to highly technical texts, as well as texts about the performing arts. Most of her experience in the performing arts has been offstage, working at the Marionetteatern and Drottningholms Slottsteater in Stockholm. She has also translated essays and texts on puppet theatre. This is her fourth year working with Festival O/Modernt.

Dr Irving Finkel is the British Museum curator in charge of cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay from ancient Mesopotamia, of which the museum’s Middle East Department has the largest collection – some 130,000 pieces – of any modern museum. This work involves reading and translating all sorts of inscriptions, sometimes working on ancient archives to identify manuscripts that belong together, or even joining one with another.

Jose Pesquero took his first steps as a photographer when he started using SLR cameras to photograph landscapes, nature and wildlife. He discovered a passion for bird photography and birdwatching, and greatly enjoys learning from birds by closely studying their habits and behaviour.

Capturing the intimate, joyful and special moments experienced by birds is always an exciting challenge. Most recently, he has been nurturing his passion by experimenting with macro photography, using extreme close-ups to take photos of miniature worlds.

Paul Williamson’s recent work includes Ekphrasis (2014), a book in blank verse about the American sculptor Richard Serra; The New Potato Eaters: Van Gogh in Nuenen 1883–1885 (2015), an edited book of miscellaneous surprises; The Art of Borrowing: Or How One Thing Leads to Another (2016), another edited book; and ‘Infinities’, in Galileo 24 (2017) by Debbie Loftus.

Six London Preludes, with Paul’s texts and 317 photographs by Debbie Loftus was published in December 2017. Recent review essays include ‘Many Realities: Picasso Portraits, National Portrait Gallery, October 2016–February 2017’ in The London Magazine.

Among Paul’s numerous texts for music is Panathenaia, a cantata on classical Greek themes, with music by Thomas Hewitt Jones, performed at the British Museum (2015). ‘A Golden Tree’ (2016), also with music by Hewitt Jones, is available from Boosey and Hawkes. Paul’s latest book, Clay:Themes and Variations from Ancient Mesopotamia, will be published in summer 2018.

Deborah studied design at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. Before moving to Sweden in 1984 to start her own design firm, she worked with studios in San Francisco and New York. Among her work is the pictogram and signage system for Swedish Rail in collaboration with Berg Architects, as well as the branding programme for Lilla Akademien.

Deborah thrives in an environment where different creative skills are joined and was quick to respond when asked to head the art programme when Lilla Akademien was established. She also started her own school offering art and design education for young people, and teaches at Forsbergs and Berghs School of Communication. Having founded Galleri Duerr in 2006, where art and design often meet music and other creative expressions, she believes art is a great way to tell important stories of our time and invests in cross-cultural meetings between different forms of art, artists and generations, showing the work of both established and emerging artists.

Born in Kenya to Irish parents, Paul McKenzie moved to Hong Kong when he was four. His wildlife photography continues to evolve: initially interested in creating a record of the wildlife he was seeing, he then became interested in capturing animal behavior. Today he is mostly drawn to the aesthetics of an image; in simple terms his goal is to create beautiful images that viewers react to positively. Animals in their environment is a strong theme and he tends to favour the use of wide-angled lenses. The advent of digital photography means that we live in an era where millions of well-exposed, sharp wildlife images are being produced each year.The challenge therefore is always to try to produce different images. This is far from easy: sometimes the situation makes it impossible, or one fails in one’s attempts. But if this is the guiding principal then very occasionally one will succeed. Paul is completely self-taught and is a six-time Nature’s Best and a two-time Wildlife Photographer of the Year honoree.

Lana Stephens is an emerging artist from Virginia Beach, VA. Lana has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions since she began exhibiting her work professionally in 2009. Professional accolades include being personally selected by Senior Curator, Joanne Moser, of the Smithsonian American Art Museum to have her work featured in the lecture “Why Draw?,” delivered at Mary Washington University in the Spring of 2011. Lana has participated in several artist residency programs including the Vermont Studio Center, Los Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic, and Nes Artist Residency in Iceland. Lana teaches art professionally both at the secondary and college level. Lana earned her BA in 2006 and her MFA in 2009. Lana is represented by Galleri Duerr in Stockholm, Sweden.
