President’s Welcome Dear Colleagues, Welcome to our 50th Anniversary Conference! I am pleased that you are able to join us in the “Star City of the South.” This year’s theme is “Literacy: The Root of all Learning,” which encapsulates our core belief that literacy is foundational to all learning. Your attendance here is an indication of your commitment to our profession.

I have great expectations for this year’s conference. Charles Richards and his conference committee have worked many hours to provide participants with informative professional development sessions, exciting social events, and opportunities to explore the city. Some of these activities include a Make and Take DIY Lab session, Paint Nite, and Karaoke.

The VSRA Board of Directors and I would like to thank all our speakers, presenters, and volunteers for their time and expertise. They are an integral part of the success of the conference; therefore, their support of VSRA and this conference is deeply appreciated. We would also like to thank our exhibitors and sponsors. Without them, conference sessions and activities would be limited. There is time in the schedule for you to talk with exhibitors about their products and services, so please visit the Exhibit Hall. (Their booth assignments are listed in the back of this program.)

The Board of Directors has been moving forward with efforts to grow membership and increase its value. This conference is only one means to that end. As a result, we are working on revising our Strategic Plan to reflect the goals and objectives expressed by our membership. During the conference, there will be opportunities for the Board to share the plan, ILA Transition information, and the State of VSRA with the membership and others who may be interested in our organization.

This conference is a great way to add to your repertoire, network, and collaborate with like-minded individuals. I trust that you will attend at least one session where a seed is planted that supports your continued professional growth in such a way that you will then, in turn, plant another seed of knowledge in a colleague who may not have been able to attend the conference.

Welcome from the Conference Chair 2016 Conference Attendees, Welcome to the Star City of the South! Enjoy your time in Roanoke and the many wonderful opportunities that await you in our valley. Thank you for choosing to join VSRA as we celebrate 50 years as the literacy leader in our Commonwealth. Our heritage is rich, and our commitment to eradicating illiteracy is amazingly strong. Our advocacy and dedication is an example for all. We know that literacy is the root of all learning. VSRA remains dedicated to supporting our members and community with current information on literacy instruction, advocating for policies that advance literacy, and promoting lifelong literacy habits.

For our 50th anniversary conference, we have gathered national and state literacy experts, who will share their research-based strategies and best practices. We have planned three days of superior sessions and fun networking opportunities. A special thank you goes to our exhibitors and business partners, who support VSRA’s literacy goals. Their backing is tremendous. Thanks also to our local councils and many volunteers, all of whom have given countless hours to help make this conference a reality. I have enjoyed working with so many talented, energetic, and caring people as we planned this celebration.

Virginia State Reading Association VSRA is a professional organization of educators and interested individuals actively engaged in the development of literacy throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Mission The mission of Virginia State Reading Association, as an authority on literacy education, is to lead in the advancement of literacy across the Commonwealth.

Vision The Virginia State Reading Association strives to be the central organization of our state providing access to current research and best practices in the field of literacy. We want to support our local councils and members of our community with current information on literacy instruction and provide direction to meet the needs of our 21st century learners.

Our History Virginia State Reading Association was established in 1968 and has a rich history of providing professional development in the area of literacy to educators in Virginia. In 1967-68, Dr. John Fanning was the Virginia State Organizational Chairman for the International Reading Association; and, accordingly, he chaired the Steering Committee meetings for the establishment of the Virginia State Council. At least three meetings of the Steering Committee were held prior to the actual formulation of Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA), which occurred at a conference in Richmond (the first conference) on March 22 and 23, 1968. The Steering Committee proposed a slate of officers as follows: President – Charles Wallace; President-Elect – Hilda Pendergress; Executive Secretary – Betty Yarborough; and Treasurer – Henry Garth.

The slate of officers was unanimously elected on March 23, 1968 and one representative from each of five local councils was appointed to be a Member-at-Large of the Board of Directors. The keynote speakers for the first conference were Dr. Alan Robinson, President of IRA, and Dr. Morton Botel. Two-hundred-ninety-nine persons registered for the meeting, with approximately 400 in attendance.

Following the initial meeting in 1968, the Executive Committee began making plans for strengthening the organization as well as initiating future activities. Among them was applying to IRA for a charter. A letter of resignation from Charles Wallace, the newly elected president, was received in June, 1968, at which time Betty Yarborough was appointed president and Mary E. Johnson of Hampton was made secretary to fill the vacancy created by Dr. Yarborough’s ascension to the presidency. Dr. Yarborough served as president of VSRA from June 1968 to March 1969.

VSRA’s first conference as a fully chartered group was held at the Golden Triangle Hotel in Norfolk in March, 1969. Since that time, VSRA has held an annual conference in different areas of the state to provide literacy-related professional development to educators in Virginia. ia in

Virginia State Reading Association’s statewide “Got IT?” initiative focuses on supporting educators as they integrate various types of nonfiction texts with the subject areas beginning in kindergarten and continuing throughout their school years.

We seek to improve students’ ability to navigate and compose informational texts by improving their comprehension of how text features, graphics, and text structures work. The statewide initiative will serve both parents and teachers by providing resources for parents and communities as they help grow Virginia’s next generation of readers who are motivated to read a broad range of information in an ever-changing world of information. We will provide teachers with professional development support and resources including book lists and lesson plans (aligned with K-5 science and social studies SOLs) that support the integration of nonfiction literacy and the content areas. Actual science and literacy centers will be created for participants to engage in hands-on lessons that include books, technology and artifacts. A rotation schedule will be used so that participants will perform the tasks associated with each center. A debriefing time will be conducted at the close of the workshop for participants to articulate personal learning in terms of designing similar centers, selecting materials as well as connections between literacy and science standards for their grade level.

Implementing Effective Word Study in the

This workshop is designed to be interactive.

Participants will have many opportunities to engage with the material. For example, participants will sort samples of student writing into developmental stages, categorize words by their syllable types, and explore word study games that are engaging for elementary aged students.

Using Your PALS Data to Support

Interventions are necessary in today’s classrooms.

Come learn about how one school used their PALS data to create strategic learners and successful students. Interventions for K-2 will be discussed during this 90-minute session. All participants will take home samples of the interventions that can begin in their school immediately.

Understanding Learning Progressions for Fiction and Non-Fiction Text

Presented by: Beth Estill

Based on the work of W. James Popham’s book Transformative Assessment teachers need to understand that a learning progression consists of a sequenced set of subskills which lead to the understanding of a more distant curriculum objective. For example, what do students need to know and understand before they are able to “Describe how the choice of language, setting, characters, and information contributes to the author’s purpose” or “identify the main idea?” In this session, participants will be provided with strategies and materials to be used formatively through their instruction. These procedures will support the teacher in making instructional decisions on when and how to gradually release responsibility to their students.

F Reading Words, Reading Pictures Presented by: Laura VacCaro Seeger

Presider: Trish Roy Concentration is on visual literacy as an integral part of the reading, writing, and illustration process. Attendees are shown the creation of a picture book from the initial idea, sketches in the journal, storyboarding, narrative, image choice, design, revisions, through completion.

Picture books for all ages are explored. A strong foundation in reading pictures will instill confidence and encouragement as students use these skills to decipher words, concepts, and story, and create their own narratives using words and pictures.

Navigating Nonfiction

Presented by: Wiley Blevins

Presider: Katie Hilden With the increased emphasis on informational text, this introductory session examines how authors help readers organize their thinking when reading, understand new vocabulary, and increase their overall comprehension. It also examines how these techniques can be used by students to improve their writing about a nonfiction topic. Participants will explore the major text structures and text features, general tips for navigating this type of text, and ways to increase students’ independent reading of nonfiction.

Mullins Leadership Award (Administrator of the Year) This award was established in 1994 to recognize administrators who show exceptional support of reading. The nominee is a strong advocate for reading, teachers and children; has a vision for a school or school system; consistently makes decisions based on a belief system, is creative in finding resources to support reading programs, and is a strong supporter of reading and/or VSRA or other reading-oriented organizations or groups.

Winner: Robin Britt Ford, Matthew Whaley Elementary School/Williamsburg-James City County Principal Jones-Daly Faculty Involvement Award This award recognizes college and university faculty, or those affiliated with a college or university, who demonstrate involvement and leadership in PK-12 literacy in the state. These individuals partner and support the efforts of VSRA and local reading councils, and they engage in visible efforts to improve PK-12 literacy.

Winner: Dr Katie Hilden-Clouse Radford University, Associate Professor of Literacy Education in the School of Teacher Education and Leadership Teachers as Readers This grant supports a TAR group in a local council or a special project from an already established group. This gives educators opportunities to read varieties of current literature, discuss readings, and share strategies for using literature in the classrooms.

Winner: Michele Mumaw, Rockingham County Public Schools, Assistant Principal Intern Teacher Research Grants Teacher research is a way that educators may examine their instructional practices in order to improve teaching and learning conditions for students. VSRA provides funding for research.

Virginia Young Writers Grant This grant supports a local reading councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s writing project. The goal is to encourage local councils to emphasize writing and to provide a grant for the implementation of projects.

Winner: Piedmont Reading Council, Angie Kraje and Joyce Spencer, Presidents VSRA Reading Teacher of the Year / Ofie T. Rubin Reading Teacher Each council is encouraged to recognize a reading teacher of the year. This award recognizes a teacher whose commitment to literacy is exemplary and unparalleled. These local council teachers of the year may then apply and be considered by VSRA for the Ofie T. Rubin Reading Teacher of the Year Award.

Winner: Heather Waild, Chesapeake Reading Council, 1st Grade Teacher VSRA International Scholarship Award The International Scholarship Award is available for VSRA members who are making a literacy presentation at a reading conference or conducting professional development outside of the United States of America.

Two scholarships up to $450 each may be awarded to an individual or group. Recipient(s) will present a session sponsored by the International Projects Committee at the VSRA annual conference the following year.

Presider: Natalie Street English is under attack. Hand-held digital devices have become the main means of written communication. Advertisers distort the language, and adults use it incorrectly and publicly.

Printed reference books are disappearing. Students are confused, making it more difficult for teachers to teach correct English skills. The Common Core and state language arts standards often frustrate students and their parents, but with the “right method,” techniques can be employed to teach basic English skills in engaging ways. Mr. Terban’s method is humor, which he considers the most useful, but underutilized, teaching tool to counteract students’ perception of grammar as boring.

Closing the Gap and Raising the Bar with Language for Science

She piloted the Literacy STEM learning lab at her current school in 2015. Stephanie was Teacher of the Year at Coventry Elementary School, York County School Division in 2012-2013 and Teacher of the Year at Lee Hall Elementary, Newport News Stephanie in 2014-2015. Kathy Barclay

Dr. Kathy Barclay is Professor Emeritus of Reading/ Early Childhood at Western Illinois University (WIU) and Manager of Professional Development for Reading for Zaner-Bloser. A former classroom teacher, reading specialist, and supervisor of reading for the Louisiana Department of Education. For ten years she served as editor of the Illinois Reading Council Journal.

Author of over 75 publications, her most recent book, co-authored with Laura Stewart, is The Everything Guide to Informational Literature, K-2: Best Texts, Best Practices (Corwin Press, 2014).

Wiley Blevins has taught elementary school in both the United States and South America. A graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Education, he has written over 15 books for teachers (including Phonics from A to Z, A Fresh Look at Phonics, Building Fluency, and Teaching Nonfiction), authored elementary reading programs, conducted research on topics ranging from fluency to using decodable text, and regularly Wiley trains teachers throughout the U.S. and Asia. An award-winning author, teacher, and researcher, Ernest Morrell is the Macy Professor of English Education and Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. FEATURED SPEAKERS Nancy Ruth Patterson’s five novels for children have been honored on Master Reading Lists in 10 states, and three have been adapted and performed for the professional stage. Upon retiring after 33 years as a teacher and administrator with Roanoke City Schools, she joined the adjunct faculty of the University of Virginia, teaching graduate courses in literature for children and young adults as well as Nancy Ruth memoir writing. She has spoken at more than 500 national conferences and workshops and has written Patterson numerous articles on the craft of writing. At her 2002 induction into the Virginia High School League’s Hall of Fame, Patterson was cited as “one of the most sought-after writing teachers in the country.”

Jerry Pallotta is the author of dozens of nonfiction titles that include Ocean Alphabet, Icky Bug Alphabet, Eyeball Alphabet, Count to a Million, and his new series, Who Would Win, a fact filled non-fiction comparison of two rivals with titles like Komodo Dragon vs King Cobra, and Tarantula vs Scorpion. Jerry has been to over 3500 schools and 400 conferences. From 2005 through 2007, Jerry presented the Read a Zillion Books® Literacy Conference, an assembly of nationally recognized educators, authors, and illustrators who promote reading and writing to emerging and experienced teachers.

Tim Rasinski is a professor of literacy education at Kent State University. He has written more than 150 articles and authored, co-authored or edited more than 15 books or curriculum programs on reading education, including the award-winning program Fluency First. His interests include reading fluency, word study, and readers who struggle. He has been published in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, and the Journal of Educational Research. He has published numerous best selling books with Teacher Created Materials and Shell Education.

Author, teacher, coach, and speaker, Laura Robb has completed more than 43 years of teaching in grades 4-8. She presently coaches teachers in grades K to 8 in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Robb is a keynote and featured speaker at conferences and leads workshops all over the country and in Canada. Laura Robb has written more than 25 books for teachers. She is the 2016 recipient of NCTE’S Richard W. Halle Award for outstanding middle level educator.

Mike Shoulders spent his childhood traveling in an army family from MD, to KY, AR, WV, and Germany, before settling in Clarksville, TN. Mike taught for 14 years and then worked as an instructional supervisor.

He earned his doctoral degree and retired with 30 years service to TN schools. Mike visits schools and conferences across America and Europe each year spreading the message that “Reading IS Magic!” This May he returns to Germany for the eighth year in a row. His program includes the entire writing process, magic, rap, and secrets found in his books.

Ali Standish

Ali Standish grew up in North Carolina and graduated from Pomona College before spending several years as an educator in the Washington, D.C. public school system. She has an MFA in children’s writing from Hollins University and is working on an MPhil in Children’s Literature from the University of Cambridge. She lives with her Finnish husband and rescue dog in Grantchester, UK. The Ethan I Was Before is her debut novel.

Marvin Terban is a teacher and children’s book author.

Called a “master of children’s wordplay” by ALA Booklist and “Mr. English for Kids” by the Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club, he has written over thirtyfive books for young readers and teachers about the English language. He is Scholastic’s “Professor Grammar.” For over fifty years, he has taught English, Latin, Public Speaking, Computer, Theater, and other Marvin subjects at the Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School in New York City where he developed teaching Terban games that used humor to help students understand and enjoy the idiosyncrasies of the English language. Those games grew into the highly original series of funny books on English for which he is known in schools all over the United States and around the world.

Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Laura Vaccaro Seeger is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator and a 2-time winner of the Caldecott Honor Award, winner of the New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award, the Boston Globe/ Horn Book Award for Best Picture Book, and a 2-time winner of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Award.

She is also the recipient of both the Massachusetts Reading Association and the New York Empire State awards for “Body of Work and Contribution to Children’s Literature”.

Judith Youngers, PhD., couples her doctoral work in curriculum and linguistics, including a specialization in reading and language arts, with her K-8 and college teaching experience. She frequently works with PreK-12 students and classroom teachers in using evidence-based strategies and scaffolds for reading, writing, and vocabulary work that are kinesthetic and three-dimensional. Her interactive notebooking Judith work includes her development of over 500 graphic organizer templates and the co-authoring of several Youngers teacher resource books. She is the Founding Director of the Dinah Zike Academy and currently curriculum director for ELAR and ESL-Dual Language. She trains teachers and interfaces with many hundred teachers annually in a variety of settings.
