Very Martinez We usually conclude our editorial by welcoming you among us.

This year, I can’t resist the temptation to tell you from the outset how happy we are to be making you welcome once more at the Hôtel Martinez, the emblematic Maison that has stood on La Croisette for more than 90 years. House, a term that has never had so much meaning: as we reopen our doors we aim to offer our visitors – travelling as well as local – much more than a hotel, much more than a stay. Unforgettable memories of moments with every detail focused on their wellbeing. The different experiences proposed as part of our Summer House concept, a tribute to the bliss of holiday homes, attest to this: gastronomy, VIP services and festive propositions, so many variations of the Very Martinez art of living.

Very Martinez? A retro-chic way of life topped off with comfort, tinged with casual elegance, days marked by la dolce vita and carefree evenings. A spirit that makes perfect sense in the setting of the French Riviera and the iconic city of Cannes. Nous avons d’ordinaire l’habitude de conclure notre édito en vous souhaitant la bienvenue parmi nous. Cette année, je ne résiste pas à la tentation de vous témoigner dès ces premières lignes tout le bonheur que nous avons à vous recevoir à nouveau à l’Hôtel Martinez, maison emblématique de la Croisette depuis plus de 90 ans. Maison ; voilà un terme qui n’a jamais eu autant de sens : en rouvrant nos portes nous souhaitons proposer à nos visiteurs -voyageurs mais également locaux-, bien plus qu’un hôtel ; bien plus qu’un séjour, le souvenir inoubliable d’instants durant lesquels chaque détail sera tourné vers leur bien-être. Les différentes expériences proposées dans le cadre de notre concept Summer House, hommage à la douceur des maisons d’été, en sont l’illustration : gastronomie, services VIP et propositions festives, autant de déclinaisons de l’art de vivre « Very Martinez ».

Very Martinez ? Un way of life retro chic nappé de confort, teinté d’élégance décontractée, de journées placées sous le signe de la dolce vita et de soirées insouciantes. Both jewel and case, meeting places for the biggest events during the Cannes Film Festival, the Penthouse Suite on the 7th floor of Martinez will soon unveil its new decor. Raising the curtain on a metamorphosis.

Il faut monter au tout dernier étage de l’Hôtel Martinez pour accéder à celle qui, avec ses 1670m2, peut se targuer de figurer parmi les plus grandes Suites d’Europe. Mais surtout, pour admirer sa vue à 360 degrés sur la baie de Cannes.

Non incluse dans le cadre de la grande

métamorphose de l’Hôtel Martinez dévoilée en 2018, la Suite Penthouse n’avait plus fait l’objet de rénovation majeure depuis 2001. Elle est désormais au cœur de toutes les attentions et dévoilera tout prochainement sa nouvelle identité.

RUPTURE ET CONTINUITÉ Là encore, c’est l’architecte Pierre-Yves Rochon et ses équipes qui signent ce nouveau chapitre, tissant ici une histoire, à la lisière entre rupture et continuité.

Continuité tout d’abord, dans le choix des matériaux, les références Art déco et les

typologies de détails : tout comme dans les zones publiques ou une partie des Chambres et Suites, voilà par exemple le terrazzo mis à l’honneur, fruit d’une volonté de l’architecte de renouer avec l’idée originelle d’un hôtel de luxe sur la Côte d’Azur. Rupture cependant, puisque si jusqu’ici l’ensemble des Suites avaient été conçues selon une seule et même vision, s’est cette fois imposée la volonté d’une nouvelle identité forte, en référence au septième art. Un clin d’œil à l’Hôtel Martinez, fleuron des années folles, ainsi qu’à la ville de Cannes qui lui sert d’écrin.

UNE SUITE, DEUX UNIVERS À Suite spéciale, thématique spéciale donc. Ainsi l’ensemble de ce très vaste espace pouvant être divisé en deux Suites distinctes, il a été choisi pour chacune d’elles un univers spécifique. La Suite de l’Actrice tout d’abord, décline ses espaces dans une harmonie de couleurs allant du blanc au doré, en passant par des touches de crème, dévoilées à travers différents effets de cuir et de soie. Un écrin de

douceur pouvant à loisir être connecté au deuxième espace qu’est la Suite du Réalisateur, imaginée quant à elle comme un boudoir masculin dans lequel mobilier au design strict et tonalités plus sombres dessinent une ambiance puissamment élégante. Partout, des prestations de très haut standing et un souci du détail porté à son paroxysme : baignoire vue mer, espaces wellness adaptables en fonction des envies (zone de yoga, salon de massage ou de coiffure). Preuve s’il en fallait que luxe se taille surmesure.

DEDANS -DEHORS Un changement de décor radical pour lequel certains espaces ont été reconfigurés avec également une attention toute particulière portée à l’extérieur, à l’immense terrasse de 600m2 qui fera l’objet d’un enrichissement paysager. L’architecte Pierre-Yves Rochon s’est ici tout spécialement attaché à reconstruire un dialogue entre extérieur et intérieur via l’installation d’une immense baie vitrée ayant nécessité

une intervention sur la façade même de l’hôtel. À la clé, un bain de lumière mais surtout, la sensation que la baie cannoise et avec elle la grande bleue, s’invitent en toile de fond dans le décor du penthouse.

Here is, for instance the terrazzo in the spotlight, the result of the architect’s desire to revive the original idea of a luxury hotel on the Côte d’Azur.Rupture, however, as even though all the suites had been designed so far according to a single vision, this time, the will of a new strong identity prevailed with reference to the seventh Art. A nod to the Martinez Hotel, flagship of the Roaring Twenties, as well as to the city of Cannes which serves as background.

ONE SUITE, TWO AMBIANCES A Special Suite, therefore, a special theme. The entire very vast space can be divided into two separate Suites, thus a specific ambiance was chosen for each of them.First of all, the ‘Suite de l’Actrice’ showcases its spaces in a harmony of colors ranging from white to gold, through touches of cream, revealed through different effects of leather and silk. A soft backdrop that can be easily connected to the second space that is the ‘Suite du Réalisateur’, imagined as a male boudoir where furniture, with a strict design and darker tones, create a powerfully elegant atmosphere.

and attention to detail are brought to the climax: sea view bath, wellness areas adaptable according to one’s desires (yoga area, massage or hair salon). Proof that luxury had to be tailor-made.

INSIDE - OUT. A radical change of décor for which certain spaces have been reconfigured also with a very particular attention given to the exterior, with the huge terrace of 600 sqm to which will added a landscaping enrichment. Here, the architect Pierre-Yves Rochon is especially attached to reconstructing a dialogue between exterior and interior using the installation of a huge picture window even requiring the necessity to intervene on the very facade of the hotel. In the end, a bath of light but above all, the sensation that the Cannes bay as well as the big blue, invite themselves as the background in the decor of the penthouse.

Petit Déjeuner au Jardin… …mais pas n’importe quel jardin : le jardin du Martinez. Quoi de plus agréable en effet que d’entamer la journée dans cet écrin luxuriant, véritable invitation pour un voyage en Provence entre son oasis de palmiers, ses bigaradiers et citronniers. L’élégance de l’ancienne terrasse, haut lieu de rendez-vous des années 30 en lieu et place duquel a été imaginé cet éden méditerranéen n’est pas très loin et le lieu prend, le temps de la matinée, des allures de marché provençal. Dans l’assiette, un petit déjeuner servi à table, imaginé comme un pique-nique sucré et salé, faisant autant que faire se peut la part belle aux produits locaux et de saison.

Breakfast in the garden... But not just any garden: the Martinez garden. What could be nicer, indeed, than starting the day in this luxuriant setting, a real invitation for a trip to Provence between its oasis of palm trees, bigaradiers and lemon trees. The elegance of the old terrace, a high meeting place of the 1930s where this Mediterranean Eden was imagined, is not far away and during the morning, the place takes on the appearance of a Provencal market. On the plate, a breakfast served at the table, imagined as a sweet and savory picnic, giving prominence to local and seasonal products, as much as possible.

Each to own his program. There are those who will be eager to discover the city, to wander towards the Port, or between the stalls of the Forville market. How to move around? Nothing could be simpler, the hotel provides electric scooters. At the table, we savor the menu particularly imagined by Chef Christian Sinicropi: fresh recipes combining Mediterranean with some exotic accents. Also, on the menu, the wide selection of the fish market, a real stall on which you can choose directly from the catch of the day.

Pour se déplacer ? Rien de plus simple, l’hôtel met à la disposition des trottinettes électriques. D’autres préfèreront démarrer la journée plus en douceur, en profitant dès le matin de la sérénité qui règne en bord de mer depuis les transats de La Plage du Martinez.

SOIRÉES ESTIVALES AU JARDIN Durant tout l’été, le Jardin accueille des soirées music live faisant place à un répertoire éclectique. Tous les jeudis à partir de 19h, la terrasse s’électrisera sur les notes du live band Brazil-latino style, tandis que les vendredi, même heure, l’ambiance sera au Jazz. Les samedis à partir de 21h 30, le Jardin du Martinez s’anime au rythme des sets de Kailly Jensen, DJ resident pour l’été. Ceux qui ont apprécié ses lives confinés seront heureux d’encore en profiter dans une ambiance lounge et conviviale au bord de la Croisette. Les dimanches accueilleront quant à eux les set du Dj Coin Vinyl dès 19h. Et dans l’assiette ? Place à la convivialité avec planches à partager, panier gourmand bois d’olivier, ou encore un large sélection de viandes et poissons cuisinés authentiquement selon différents modes de cuisson (rôti à la broche, four tandoori ou encore cuisson à la pierre de lave…). © Ugo Richard

Summer evenings in Le Jardin. Throughout the summer, Le Jardin du Martinez will be hosting live music evenings embracing an eclectic repertoire. Every Thursday from 7pm, the terrace will be wired to the sounds of a live BrazilLatino-style band, while on Fridays, starting at the same time, the atmosphere is Jazz. On Saturdays from 9.30pm, Le Jardin du Martinez comes alive to the rhythm of sets

by Kailly Jensen, resident DJ for the summer. Those who enjoyed her live shows during the confinement will delight in going for it again in a convivial lounge atmosphere on La Croisette. On Sundays, DJ Coin Vinyl will be playing sets from 7pm. And to eat? Make way for conviviality with sharing platters, a gourmet olive wood basket, and a wide selection of meats and fish authentically prepared using different cooking methods (spit roast, a tandoori oven and lava stone cooking...).

Jusqu’au moindre détail, tout a été pensé afin de minimiser l’impact environnemental de l’activité de l’hôtel et de ses clients, ceci selon de grands objectifs clés, qu’énumère Yann Gillet : « Une réduction des plastiques à usage unique, l’amélioration de la gestion des déchets alimentaires ainsi qu’un soutien auprès des communautés locales ». Une volonté partagée par l’ensemble des équipes, à commencer par Christian Sinicropi, Chef exécutif des cuisines du Martinez, qui s’emploie à travailler de concert avec des producteurs de la région pour proposer aux différentes tables, fruits et légumes du terroir et pêche locale, sublimés à travers une cuisine tendant vers le zéro gâchis. Prendre soin de la planète comme de l’environnement local, c’est la volonté qui anime l’ensemble des collaborateurs du Martinez, ces derniers s’investissant même pendant leur temps libre dans des actions telles que « Nettoyons la nature » menée par l’association Méditerranée 2000.

Depuis 1929 exactement, le 73 boulevard la Croisette est un symbole de l’art de vivre sur la Riviera. Or l’art de vivre, en 2020 plus que jamais, se conjugue à l’aune des enjeux contemporains en termes de responsabilité sociale et environnementale. Des préoccupations que l’Hôtel Martinez a depuis fort longtemps intégrées : en 2010 déjà, ce dernier devenait le premier établissement français à obtenir la certification Green Globe, un exigeant référentiel mondial de développement durable. Ceci avant de recevoir, à peine 5 ans plus tard, le statut Gold, louant la constance de ses engagements. Toujours précurseur, le Martinez est devenu en 2020 le tout premier hôtel français à accéder au statut Platinum. Une réussite que son Directeur Général Yann Gillet, explique notamment par « la recherche constante d’améliorations » en la matière.

UNE RESPONSABILITÉ ENVIRONNEMENTALE ET SOCIALE Adoptant le terme de développement durable dans son acception la plus large, l’hôtel s’engage également sur le plan sociétal en soutenant par exemple des actions caritatives.

Ainsi, depuis 3 ans, de l’inscription à la carte de la Plage du Martinez d’un plat Solidaire au profit de l’association « Sourire et Partage ». Le principe est simple : pour chaque plat vendu, un euro est reversé à cette association qui apporte une aide morale et matérielle aux enfants gravement malades et à leurs familles. La même logique de soutien à la communauté a guidé le partenariat passé en 2019 avec l’association française « Unisoap » qui a eu l’idée de collecter les savons usagés des hôtels pour qu’ils soient recyclés par

A GLOBAL APPROACH, CONCRETE ACTIONS Sustainable development, sustainable commitment. And as proof: the recent metamorphosis of the building in 2018 was an opportunity to integrate new technologies reducing water and energy consumption. Up to the smallest detail, everything has been designed in order to minimize the environmental impact of the activity of the hotel and its customers, this according to major key objectives, as listed by Yann Gillet: “A reduction of single-use plastics, the improvement of food waste management as well as support for local communities”. A desire shared by all the teams, starting with Christian Sinicropi, Executive Chef of the Martinez kitchens, who strives to work in concert with producers of the region to offer local fruits, vegetables and fishes at the various tables, sublimated through a zero waste-oriented cuisine. Taking care of the planet & the local environment is the wish driving all the Martinez employees. They even get involved, during their spare time, in actions such as “Clean up the nature”, a project led by the Association “Méditerranée 2000”.

AN ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Adopting the term sustainable development in its broadest sense, the Hotel is also committed to the societal plan by supporting, for instance, charitable actions. For the past 3 years, a Solidarity dish for the benefit of the “Sourire et Partage” Association, has been added on the Beach menu. The principle is simple: for each dish sold, one euro is donated to this association which provides moral and material aid to seriously ill children and their families. On the same logic of support for the community, a partnership was signed, in 2019, with the French Association “Unisoap” which had the idea of collecting used soaps from hotels to be recycled by disabled workers and distributed to families and disadvantaged people in France and around the world. 2 million young people in France are not in education, employment or training and, in lower-income neighbourhoods, the rate of unemployment among 16-25-year-olds is almost 40%. The association, created in 2015 by Moussa Camara, aims to break this vicious circle and truly allow young people to rise, eclipsing these statistics.

If you thought Amber Heard could simply be defined by her composed yet ravishing beauty, you thought wrong. The actress, model and face of L’Oreal Paris takes every opportunity, both on screen and off, to speak out and reiterate her commitment towards diversity, gender equality and improving gender awareness. This is our interview with her.

Bien que les choses évoluent, les héroïnes des comics sont souvent représentées de manière ultra sexualisée, or, vous êtes entrée dans l’univers DC en incarnant Mera (dans Justice League puis Aquaman) une super-héroïne dont on retient surtout le caractère bien trempé. Vous êtes-vous investie dans la définition de ce personnage afin qu’il évite tout stéréotype ?

Je me suis pleinement investie dans le rôle de Mera dans Aquaman car elle casse les codes tacites qui entourent les super-héroïnes (et les personnages féminins en général) : elle refuse d’être définie par un simple attribut physique ou un trait de personnalité. Mera tire sa beauté de sa force et de son indépendance, et non pas l’inverse.

Quel type de personnage rêveriez-vous de jouer aujourd’hui ?

J’aime incarner des personnages qui, comme Mera, s’éloignent des attentes habituelles concernant la représentation d’un personnage féminin. J’aime repousser les limites des attentes collectives du public et rompre avec les règles qu’Hollywood et la société ont trop longtemps imposées vis-à-vis des femmes.

Quels sont vos projets à venir ?

Je recherche actuellement de nouveaux projets en tant que productrice. Je suis en quête d’histoires qui retracent la vie de femmes qui ont cassé les codes, se sont dressées contre ce qu’elles étaient « supposées » être ou faire et ont ainsi permis de changer le statu quo. Les histoires qui se penchent sur une facette très précise d’un changement à grande échelle s’avèrent parfois être les plus passionnantes… et les moins représentées jusqu’à maintenant.

L’année dernière, lors de la journée mondiale de lutte contre l’homophobie et la transphobie, vous avez monté les marches du Festival de Cannes en tant qu’ambassadrice L’Oréal Paris avec à vos côtés votre amie Corey Rae, qui est une activiste transsexuelle. Une manière de faire passer un message ?

La visibilité est la clé du changement. Le manque de connaissance engendre un risque d’incompréhension, ou pire, de désinformation qui entraîne la peur ou les préjugés. Les antidotes contre cette terrible détérioration du savoir et des communautés sont la familiarisation, l’empathie et la sensibilisation. Je cherche à créer un monde plus juste pour tous en aidant ceux qui ont souvent été réduits au silence ou effacés en raison du manque de visibilité et du droit à l’expression.

Vous avez déclaré qu’adolescente votre chambre était notamment décorée de posters de propagande féministe. Quelle est l’origine de votre engagement pour les droits des femmes ?

En grandissant, la vie me rappelait sans cesse, et ce de manière implicite et explicite, que je devais répondre à un certain nombre d’attentes simplement parce que je suis « une fille ». Tous les jours, j’étais assujettie à ces attentes sur la façon dont ma personnalité et mon corps devraient être, se comporter ou paraître. Je m’apercevais également que mes semblables masculins ne subissaient pas les mêmes pressions ou restrictions, et commençais ainsi à entrevoir les avantages auxquelles nous, les femmes, n’avions pas accès. Lorsque j’ai commencé à remarquer que les filles parmi mes camarades levaient moins souvent la main lors des débats en classe et se focalisaient plutôt sur les réactions qu’elles engendraient autour d’elles, cela a inspiré chez moi une certaine frustration. Je voulais de l’encouragement, de l’épanouissement et du soutien… être jugée au même

titre que mes camarades masculins, point !

Ainsi, j’ai commencé à être encouragée par des femmes, et par leurs idoles dans le passé, qui m’ont offert la « chance » d’avoir des opportunités bien meilleures que celles offertes à ma grand-mère. Je me suis dit : « Si elles ont su œuvrer pour que j’aie la chance d’être là où je suis et d’être à même de m’indigner des problèmes actuels, je leur dois beaucoup ».

Finalement, plus qu’une lutte pour les droits LGBT, Queer, ou encore les droits des femmes, votre combat n’est-il pas celui de la défense de la diversité ?

La diversité est une question d’humanité. C’est aussi simple que cela. Lorsque l’on se bat pour l’humanité tout entière, on défend les valeurs qui nous unissent, notre humanité commune.

Je suis heureuse de voir que les façons limitées dont nous représentons le monde, vis-à-vis des femmes en particulier, évoluent enfin. Il est grand temps de voir nos attentes concernant la définition de la beauté progresser vers une logique plus inclusive.

De plus en plus loin de l’idée de standards, la beauté peut également être pensée en termes de diversité. Que pensez-vous du maquillage comme véritable outil d’empowerment féminin ?

Le maquillage est un outil qui peut aider une personne à s’exprimer, à s’identifier et à prendre son indépendance. Le maquillage a toujours été pour moi un moyen de m’exprimer, soit en l’utilisant, soit en le laissant de côté. Le maquillage devrait être vu comme quelque chose qui nous aide à nous définir nous-même, et non pas quelque chose qui nous définit.

Il y a parfois cette idée hyper réductrice de la féminité selon laquelle on ne peut pas être une femme forte, crédible aux yeux du monde et, en même temps, parler maquillage, coiffure, mode, sous prétexte que ce serait superficiel. La même idée qui nous conduirait à penser qu’en une seule et même interview nous ne pourrions pas évoquer vos combats pour des causes telles que le féminisme et en même temps parler de votre routine ou vos tips beauté. Qu’en pensez-vous ?

Je pense que l’idée selon laquelle l’antithèse de la force et de l’égalité des genres serait de soigner son apparence, ses habits et avoir un intérêt pour les talons hauts et le maquillage, est erronée, limitée et dépassée. En quoi le fait de réduire les actions habituellement considérées comme étant « féminines » voudrait dire que l’on est moins féminine ?! Je pense qu’il est déplacé

de dire à qui que ce soit que la féminité, quelle que soit la manière dont elle est exprimée, devrait toujours se traduire par un « moins ».

D’ailleurs : une routine ou un tips beauté ?

Je ne voudrais pas faire écho à toutes les mères du monde en disant cela, mais c’est vrai : protégez-vous du soleil (enfin, mettez au moins de la crème) ! Personnellement, je n’ai pas le choix car j’ai une peau très claire. Mais de manière générale : protégez votre peau, car c’est le « papier cadeau » qui emballe votre vie entière !

Dans la dernière campagne L’Oréal Paris, vous avez déclaré ne plus vous soucier de la représentation que l’on pouvait avoir de vous et « assumer votre blondeur ». Pensez-vous que certains aspects physiques tels que la couleur de cheveux puissent encore être discriminants pour une femme dans sa vie personnelle et professionnelle ?

Malheureusement, dans ce monde et plus particulièrement dans mon univers professionnel, les opportunités des femmes sont limitées par leur apparence physique. Nous sommes assujetties à des normes inatteignables qui dépassent l’entendement et notre contrôle. Le statu quo commence enfin à être remis en question de manière concrète, mais le chemin à parcourir reste long. Je rencontre souvent des obstacles, des difficultés et des jugements basés sur des qualités superficielles, comme mes cheveux blonds, qui ne reflètent en rien ma vraie valeur, mon potentiel ou mon mérite dans ce monde. Toutefois, je pense qu’il est important de ne pas laisser ces normes nous décourager dans notre volonté de repousser les lim-

Pour conclure, que vous inspire le slogan « Parce que vous le valez bien » de L’Oréal Paris dont vous êtes ambassadrice ?

En tant qu’ambassadrice de la famille L’Oréal Paris, la phrase « Parce que vous le valez bien » représente beaucoup pour moi. Elle incarne ce que j’adore le plus dans le fait d’être une femme et représente la notion qui, selon moi, doit absolument être mise en avant dans le débat public. Nous devons tout faire pour encourager ce sentiment chez chacun et chacune de nous, car nous le valons bien !

Although things are changing, comic book heroines are often portrayed in an ultra-sexualized way. You entered the DC universe as Mera (in Justice League and then Aquaman), a superheroine with a very strong personality. Did you throw yourself into defining this character so that it avoided stereotypes?

I jumped into the role of Mera in Aquaman because it broke the unspoken rule of female superheroes (and most female characters alike).

She refuses to be defined based solely on a physical attribute or personality trait: Mera is beautiful because she is strong and empowered, not the other way around.

What kind of character do you dream of playing today?

I enjoy playing characters that, like Mera, deconstruct our normal expectations for how a female character should be portrayed. I like pushing the boundaries of our collective expectations as an audience and breaking the rules that Hollywood and society have always set on the representation of women.

Do you have any projects in the pipeline?

Right now I am looking for more projects to produce. I am looking for stories about women who broke rules, challenged how they were “supposed to” be or act and made a difference in the process.

Sometimes, stories about small pieces of what is to become widespread change are the most interesting… and the least talked about so far.

Last year, as a L’Oréal Paris ambassador, you appeared on the steps at the Cannes Film Festival for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia alongside

your friend Corey Rae, who is a transgender activist. Was that a way to get a message across?

Visibility is key for bringing about change. With unfamiliarity comes risk of misunderstanding, or worse, misinformation that can lead to fear and prejudice. The antidote to this horrible deterioration of understanding and community is familiarity, empathy and awareness. I seek to help the world become a fairer place for all by giving a voice to those who have traditionally been silenced or erased through their lack of visibility.

You said that as a teenager your room was decorated with feminist propaganda posters. Where does your commitment to women’s rights stem from?

When I was growing up, I was constantly reminded, both implicitly and explicitly, that things were expected of me simply because I was “a girl”. Every day, I was faced with images about my body and personality: how it or I should look, behave, appear and be. While I did not see the same pressures or restrictions placed upon my male counterparts, I started to notice the advantages that women were therefore being denied. I was frustrated when I started noticing that my female classmates were refraining from raising their hands in class discussions and focused on what reaction they were able to get from the world around them instead. I wanted to be encouraged, nourished and nurtured, to be held to the same standards as my male counterparts. Period.

So I started finding encouragement from women, or their idols that came before me, who made my “luck” in life so much better than that of my grandmother.

I thought: “If they worked so hard for me to be here and to be frustrated with these problems, then I owe them a lot”.

More than just a fight for LGBT, Queer and women’s rights, isn’t your struggle ultimately about defending diversity?

Diversity is about humanity. It’s as simple as that.

When we can take up the fight for all of us, we are standing up for what connects us all - our shared common humanity. I am glad to finally see that our limited representations of people, especially women, are being challenged. It’s time to see more wholesome and inclusive expectations be met in terms of what we identify as beautiful.

Increasingly removed from the idea of standards, beauty can also be thought of in terms of diversity. What do you think about makeup as a real tool of women’s empowerment?

There is sometimes this hyper-reductionist view of femininity, according to which you cannot be a strong and believable woman in the eyes of the world if you also talk about makeup, hair or fashion, under the pretext of it being superficial. The same view might lead us to think that, in this interview, we can’t touch on your fight for causes such as feminism and also talk about your skincare routine or beauty tips. What do you think about that?

I think it is uninformed, limited and outdated to think that if you care about how you look, dress or if you are interested in high heels or makeup, you are somehow antithetical to the concepts of strength or gender equality. But how can reducing one’s behaviors, which are traditionally deemed “feminine”, somehow be less feminine?!

I think there is something unhealthy about telling anyone that femininity - in whatever form one chooses to express it, or not - should always be about doing less…

expressing yourself and knowing that your true worth cannot be weighed solely by other people’s judgment. It is about expressing yourself just the way you are.

And finally, as a brand spokesperson, what do you think of the L’Oréal Paris slogan “Because You’re Worth It”?

As a spokesperson for the L’Oréal Paris family, “Because You’re Worth It” means the world to me. It embodies what I love about being a woman and the message that is the most important for us to enhance in the public debate. Makeup has always been something for me to enjoy expressing myself, whether I choose to use it or not.

It is and should be seen as something that you can use to define yourself, not the other way around.

By the way, can you give us any skincare routine or beauty tips?

Not to sound like your mother or anything but it’s honestly the truth: stay out of the sun (or at least use sunscreen)! I personally have no choice because my skin in very fair. But in general, protect your skin: it is the “wrapping paper” that shields your entire life!

In the last L’Oréal Paris campaign, you said that you had “come to terms with your blond hair”. Do you think that certain physical traits such as hair color can still be a source of discrimination against a woman in her personal and professional life?

Unfortunately in this world, especially in my business, women are still limited by their physical appearance, often based on impossible standards that are beyond their control or understanding. It is finally being challenged in a real way, but we have a long way to go. I still find myself facing roadblocks, judgments and challenges based on superficial qualities, such as my blonde hair, that do not reflect my inherent value, potential or worth in this world. But I think it’s important to not let these standards stop you from pushing those boundaries,

A look back at these moments when the Cannes Film Festival echoed the past decade.

Diversité ? Représentativité ! « Aux femmes les bobines à coudre, aux hommes celles des frères Lumière ! » En 2012, une tribune du collectif féministe La Barbe dénonçait la non-mixité du Festival : sur les 22 films en compétition, tous ont été réalisés par des hommes. Les organisateurs se défendent alors de tout sexisme et promettent de porter davantage d’attention aux films de réalisatrices lors de la prochaine sélection. Il faudra malgré tout attendre 2018 pour que, dans le sillage de l’affaire Weinstein, le directeur du festival Thierry Frémaux signe une charte pour la parité. Cette année-là, un groupe de 82 femmes monte les marches pour revendiquer l’égalité des salaires. Parmi elles, Julie Gayet, l’Américaine Cate Blanchett alors présidente du jury -, Agnès Varda ou encore la ministre de la Culture Françoise Nyssen. Durant la même édition, le mouvement initié par l’actrice Aïssa Maïga prend son envol à Cannes : les 16 comédiennes françaises et autrices de l’essai Noire n’est pas mon métier prennent la pose sur le tapis rouge. Leur message ?

Noires ou métisses, elles refusent d’être la « caution diversité » ou les « images d’Épinal » des films dans lesquels elles tournent.

Diversity? Representativeness! “To women sewing spools, to men those of the Lumière Brothers!” In 2012, La Barbe, an opinion column by the feminist collective, denounced the unmixed nature of the Festival: out of the 22 films in competition, all were made by men. The organizers defend themselves against all sexism and promise to pay more attention to the films of female Directors at the next selection. We will have to wait until 2018 for the festival Director, Thierry Frémaux, to sign a parity charter in the wake of the Weinstein affair.

That year, a group of 82 women climbed the stairs to demand equal wages. Among them, Julie Gayet, the American Cate Blanchett - then President of the jury -, Agnès Varda or even the Minister of Culture Françoise Nyssen. During the same edition, the movement initiated by the actress Aïssa Maïga takes off in Cannes: the 16 French actresses and authors of the essay Noire n’est pas mon métier pose on the red carpet. Their message?

Black or mixed race, they refuse to be the “diversity bond” or the “Epinal images” of the films in which they shoot.

Des règles secouées En 2014, c’est l’affaire DSK qui ressurgit et vient faire de l’ombre à la compétition. Diffusé en marge du festival, le film d’Abel Ferrara Welcome to New York, adaptation avec Gérard Depardieu de l’affaire du Sofitel, capte toute l’attention médiatique.

Les organisateurs s’indignent de cette « prise en otage » des autres films de la sélection. Stupeur et tremblements en 2017 également, lorsque le géant Netflix, qui présente deux films en compétition, se retrouve à son tour au centre d’une polémique : ses longs-métrages sortent sur son service de VOD, mais pas en salle, bouleversant l’ordre établi. Organisateurs et diffuseurs s’arc-boutent sur leurs positions. Depuis, la plateforme de streaming boycotte le festival.

Les femmes étaient les grandes absentes de cette liste trustée par des emblèmes du cinéma testostéronés, tels que Martin Scorsese, Todd Phillips ou encore Quentin Tarantino. Un bon symbole des inégalités persistantes à Hollywood : selon une étude de l’organisme USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, seuls 12 des 100 films américains les plus populaires de 2019 ont été mis en scène par des femmes.

Ou l’infusion dans la société que le genre n’a rien de naturel et est bel et bien une construction culturelle. La pop culture a largement accompagné le mouvement avec, entre autres, une Christine and the Queens d’ailleurs devenue Chris pour la musique ou le monde des séries avec Pose ayant révélé une icône queer au mantra revendiqué d’« authenticité », Billy Porter, sensation des tapis rouges en smoking-robe.

À l’image des icônes millennials, tel un Harry Styles, ambassadeur Gucci, bijouté et ongles colorés, en chemise à jabot et talons, la mode s’extirpe des codes genrés, allant bien plus loin que la binarité inversée. Le smoking de Yves Saint Laurent en 1966 ? La jupe Jean Paul Gaultier pour hommes en 1985 ? « Ici, pour jouer sur le scandale ou le subversif, on ne fait qu’inverser des codes, c’est se travestir, on n’est pas encore dans un genre troublé.

On conserve très fortement l’idée que les garde-robes sont genrées, féminine et masculine », détaille Manon Renault. « Au contraire d’un David Bowie qui, lui, ne s’habillait pas dans l’idée d’un vestiaire masculin ou féminin. Le mouvement du glam rock dans la musique des années 1970-1980 a influencé cette fluidité du genre où l’on dépassait l’idée même de l’existence du genre en habillant une « personne » avant toute autre considération ».

Si la mode et ses icônes ont toujours aimé jouer avec le genre par le passé, en quoi l’époque marque-t-elle une nouvelle ère ?

LA MODE NE FAIT PAS GENRE Dans sa capacité à capter l’air du temps, la mode s’empare bien évidemment de ce mouvement, des maisons de couture aux enseignes de grande distribution. Sans contrefaçon ou effet de mode ? « Soit les grandes marques le faisaient déjà car elles ne créaient pas à partir d’une construction du genre, par exemple, tels les créateurs japonais dans les années 1980, Rei Kawakubo ou Issey Miyake. Soit elles sont bien obligées de s’y mettre, pour l’image », explore Manon Renault avant d’ajouter : « La mode, tout en étant une industrie, est un élément culturel et elle peut donc être un lieu qui propose de nouvelles représentations et c’est

Mais certains créateurs puisent directement dans le « gender fluidity » pour leur ADN tels le directeur artistique Demna Gvasalia chez Vetements et Balenciaga, brouillant allégrement les pistes avec des défilés fusionnés au vestiaire unisexe, ou le messianique Alessandro Michele chez Gucci, piochant, pour toutes les silhouettes, dans le rose, les fleurs, les broderies et autres prétendus attributs féminins. Pour eux, l’époque ne fait même plus de distinction : « Il y a quinze ans, ça aurait été une déclaration consciente de mettre une robe sur un gars. Maintenant, c’est juste la société », résume Demna Gvasalia*.

But some creators draw directly from the “gender fluidity” for their DNA such as the Artistic Director Demna Gvasalia at Vetements and Balenciaga, blurring the tracks with parades merged in the unisex wardrobe, or the messianic Alessandro Michele at Gucci, drawing out, for all silhouettes, in pink, flowers, embroidery and other supposedly feminine attributes. Steph Cop : Christian Sinicropi est un chef atypique, un artiste. Il compose avec un sens pictural pour donner de l’amplitude à l’expérience gastronomique. Nous travaillons sur ce que la nature offre de sublime, pour lui rendre grâce en la personnifiant dans nos créations. Je cherche l’esprit de l’arbre pour trouver l’axe de gravité existentiel de chacune de mes formes sculptées ARO.

Au printemps 2021, le restaurant La Palme d’Or proposera une expérience immersive, esthétique inédite de la gastronomie imaginée avec l’artiste Steph Cop. En attendant, les hôtes peuvent dès à présent découvrir l’univers du sculpteur, sa matière - l’arbre - à travers ses œuvres emblématiques exposées par la galerie Audrey Hatchikian dans les différents espaces du Martinez. Le bronze Black Raw dont les reflets évoquent les lignes de l’arbre et sa trajectoire de vie est le gardien du jardin de citronniers. Dans les espaces de l’hôtel baignés d’une douce lumière, vous ferez la rencontre de la sculpture Robur dont la silhouette abrupte et fine symbolise la force et les failles de l’arbre, Columnae une forme délibérément interrompue témoin du destin inachevé de l’arbre, Copelini figure épurée en tension verticale et le Cube bronze représentation de l’esprit de l’arbre.

Parlez-nous de votre projet pour le printemps 2021. Il ne s’agit plus seulement de créer une œuvre écrin pour la dégustation.

Steph Cop : La nature convoque tous nos sens.

Nous la contemplons, la touchons, l’écoutons, la respirons, la goûtons. Aussi, nous voulions explorer cette amplitude sensorielle dans une expérience gastronomique artistique inspirée de l’arbre dans son écosystème.

Christian Sinicropi : Steph Cop a sculpté une assiette, que la céramiste Catherine Sinicropi a réalisée avec talent. J’ai imaginé un mouvement de dégustation, une promenade végétale déclinant les nuances de la note boisée, comme une traduction sensorielle de la relation intense de l’artiste à la nature arborée.

RACONTER OU MIEUX, PEINDRE 90 ANS D’HISTOIRE DU MARTINEZ EN SONS, EN IMAGES, ET EN PRÈS D’UNE QUINZAINE DE MINUTES : TEL EST LE DÉFI RELEVÉ PAR L’ARTISTE X AVIER DE RICHEMONT QUI A SIGNÉ, À L’OCCASION DE L’ANNIVERSAIRE ÉVÈNEMENT DE L’EMBLÉMATIQUE HÔTEL, UNE ŒUVRE SAISISSANTE.

Tell, or better, paint 90 years of Martinez’s history using sounds, pictures, and in almost fifteen minutes: this is the challenge taken up by the artist Xavier de Richemont who signed a striking work, on the occasion of the anniversary event of the emblematic hotel.

It’s called video painting. For 20 years, Xavier de Richemont has imagined and conceived all around the world, real works of sound and light. In the latter, it is not the actors but, indeed, the projected pictures and the surfaces on which they come alive, that play the leading role. In December 2019, on the occasion of ILTM (International Luxury Travel Market), it is on the emblematic Art Deco facade of 73 boulevard la Croisette that the spectators could admire “Martinez Memories”, fresco with a rich and captivating epic retracing 90 years of history. In five acts, Xavier de Richemont, sets the scene for a heady riviera before rolling out the marvelous Odyssey of Martinez: the inauguration in 1929 of this colossus poured concrete (the first work of its kind) desired by the visionary Emmanuel Martinez, the Roaring Twenties whose festive elegance is rooted in the hotel’s DNA, the Stock market crash, the war and the post-war period, the new age revolution and its colorful furniture to which the 5-star hotel succumbed to, the 1990’s emancipation and, eventually ... the renewal, or rather the metamorphosis operated in 2019 by Pierre-Yves Rochon’s cabinet. On each painting, here is the eye swept away

by Xavier de Richemont’s pictures: “photographs that I was able to take during ballads in the city or tours in its museums, archive images collected as part of historical researches from which I set up a scenario.” To this masterful turbulence, a musical selection as precise as eclectic, is added. This is how after Al Jolson singing “Im sitting on the top of the world” (wink wished by Xavier de Richemont to Emmanuel Martinez), follows The Velvet Underground, Jacques Higelin, the Daft Punk or the electro of Polo and Pan on a 4th act - so riviera chic. Ultimate gem: the painting dedicated to the starred cuisine of chef Christian Sinicropi, designed from a recording of the excitement found in the kitchen. In the end, fifteen minutes of poetry, dreams, shows but also learnings for the spectator whose curiosity has been tickled. In short: majestic!

Cela s’appelle le vidéo painting. Voilà 20 ans que Xavier de Richemont imagine et conçoit à travers le monde de véritables œuvres de son et lumière dans lesquelles ce ne sont pas des comédiens, mais les images et les surfaces sur lesquelles elles s’animent, projetées, qui tiennent le premier rôle. Au mois de décembre 2019, à l’occasion de ILTM (International Luxury Travel Market) c’est sur l’emblématique façade Art déco du 73 boulevard la Croisette que les spectateurs ont pu admirer « Martinez Memories », fresque d’une riche et captivante épopée retraçant 90 ans d’histoire. En cinq actes, Xavier de Richemont plante le décor d’une Riviera enivrante avant de dérouler l’odyssée merveilleuse du Martinez : l’inauguration en 1929 de ce colosse de béton coulé (le premier ouvrage du genre) voulu par le visionnaire Emmanuel Martinez, les Années folles dont l’élégance festive est ancrée dans l’ADN de l’hôtel, le krach boursier, la guerre et l’après-guerre, la révolution new age et son mobilier coloré auquel succomba l’hôtel 5 étoiles, l’émancipation des années © Xavier de Richemont 2019 90 et, enfin… le renouveau, ou plutôt la métamorphose opérée en 2019 par le cabinet de Pierre-Yves Rochon. À chaque tableau, voilà l’œil emporté par les images de Xavier de Richemont : « des photographies que j’ai pu prendre lors de balades dans la ville ou de visites de ses musées, des images d’archives collectées dans le cadre de recherches historiques à partir desquelles j’élabore un scénario ». À ce magistral tourbillon s’ajoute une sélection musicale aussi © Xavier de Richemont 2019 pointue qu’éclectique. Voilà qu’à un Al Jolson chantant « Im sitting on the top of the world » (clin d’œil voulu par Xavier de Richemont à Emmanuel Martinez), succèdent The Velvet Underground, Jacques Higelin, les Daft Punk ou encore l’électro de Polo and Pan sur un quatrième acte des plus Riviera chic. Pépite ultime : le tableau dédié à la cuisine étoilée du Chef Christian Sinicropi, composé à partir d’un enregistrement de l’effervescence en cuisine. Au final, quinze minutes de poésie, de rêve, de spectacle mais également de pédagogie pour le spectateur dont la curiosité aura été piquée. Bref : monumental !

Ludique et insolite : l’Urban Trail Cannes Urban Trail, deux termes apparemment antinomiques mais dont le mariage se révèle tout à fait intéressant.

Pour preuve, les trois premières éditions de l’Urban Trail Cannes, soit quatre courses (9,15 ou 26 km et 1 km pour les kids) dont les parcours mixtes alternent entre collines et ville.

Un rendez-vous original qui permet en outre de découvrir ou redécouvrir la ville et ses sites remarquables.

Ludique mais pas simple pour autant : le Grand Cannois (26 km), par exemple, est composé à 40 % de sentiers en trail avec près de 500 m de dénivelé, une très physique portion de course sur sable et, au total, plus 1000 marches à enjamber… dont les 24 du Palais des Festivals pour une touche très 7e Art.

Pour varier les plaisirs : l’ÖtillÖ Swimrun Cannes Certaines pratiques corsent un petit peu l’exercice en ajoutant d’autres défis à la course à pied. C’est le cas du swimrun, nouveau venu dans le paysage des courses sportives, qui remporte un grand succès depuis sa création en 2006. L’idée ?

Combiner, souvent en binôme, course à pied et nage en eau libre sur différentes sections qui se succèdent. Un nouveau challenge auquel Cannes fait toute sa place en accueillant chaque année à la mi-octobre l’ÖtillÖ Swimrun Cannes qui a rarement aussi bien porté son nom. En Suède, pays d’origine du swimrun, Ö till ö signifie « d’île en île » ; or ici, les participants à la grande course des World Series sont invités à courir sur l’île Sainte-Marguerite puis traverser vers l’île Saint-Honorat avant de rejoindre le littoral. Une particularité qui interpellera les spectateurs néophytes : pas de changement de tenue et matériel entre les cessions nage et running !

To vary the pleasures: the ÖtillÖ Swimrun Cannes. Some practices make the exercise a little more difficult by adding other challenges to running. This is the case of the new swimrun in the sports racing landscape which has been very successful since its creation in 2006. The idea? Combine, often in pairs, running and swimming in open water on different successive sections. A new challenge into which Cannes digs in welcoming each year, by mid-October, the ÖtillÖ Swimrun Cannes which has rarely been so aptly named. In Sweden, the country of origin of the swimrun, Ö till ö means "from island to island"; however here, the participants in the big race of the World series are invited to run on the Sainte Marguerite island then cross towards the Saint Honnorat island before joining the coast. A special feature that will appeal to neophyte spectators: no changing of outfit and equipment between the swimming and running sessions!

Fun and unusual: the Urban Trail Cannes. Urban Trail is the contraction of two terms, seemingly contradictory but whose combination turns out to be quite interesting. As proof, the first three editions of the Urban Trail Cannes are four races (9, 15 or 26km and 1km for kids). Their mixed routes alternate between hills and cities. An original rendez-vous which also enables you to discover again and again the city and its remarkable sites.

En plus de son cadre naturel idyllique et du développement de pistes dédiées à la course à pied ou à la randonnée, la ville propose 16 parcours classés par niveau de difficulté, pour un cumul de 100 km de pistes balisées. Autant dire que le terrain de jeu sera vaste et varié. Et pour courir connecté, ces différents parcours sont téléchargeables depuis Cannes Sport, une appli permettant notamment de sélectionner son parcours puis d’activer les fonctions « suivi de tracé » ou la possibilité de se chronométrer et participer aux défis Cannes Sport. Alors ? Plutôt bord de mer le long de la Croisette ou envie de faire chauffer les mollets vers la Croix-des-Gardes ? À noter, l’application propose également des parcours de swimrun ou de vélo.

Nul étonnement à ce qu’il rencontre chaque année un franc succès avec, pour la dernière édition, plus de 60 nationalités et 13 000 coureurs sur l’ensemble des distances proposées.

Car pour ceux qui redouteraient les 42,195 km à pratiquer sur l’asphalte, il est également possible de s’inscrire au marathon en binôme ou au 20 km. Depuis 2013, le Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes bénéficie du label « développement durable le sport s’engage » : Quoi de plus naturel pour les amateurs d’une discipline outdoor que de prendre soin de l’environnement ?
