About the Rick Kaps Award
It is with great pride and respect that the OMC Foundation established the Rick Kaps Award, which is presented on an annual basis to an organization or individual for their outstanding support of cancer care on the North Olympic Peninsula. The award is named for Sequim teacher and coaching great Rick Kaps (left), who passed away from cancer in 1998 at age 55.
Kaps was head coach of Sequim High School’s basketball team from 1975 to 1989. His 1988 team, led by son Ryan, made it to the finals in the Class AA state tournament with nary a starter over 6’-3”. The team finished second to Rainier Beach, which was led by future NBA star Doug Christie. Over the years, four of his teams made it to the state tournament, while six were district champions. He was named Washington State Basketball Coach of the Year in 1988.
"I think that Rick Kaps was the closest thing our town has had to a hero," said fellow Sequim High School educator Mark Textor.
When Kaps passed away from cancer in February 1998, over 1,000 family members, friends, colleagues and ex-players packed into what is now Rick Kaps Gym at Sequim High School to pay their respects.
"Rick Kaps may be best known as the highly successful coach of Sequim basketball games," wrote Sequim Gazette Editor Jim Manders, "But there was much more to the man than what happened on a shiny wooden court."
"I have memories of breaking chalk and flying clipboards, but through it all, I know that he always cared about his players," said Larry Hill, Kaps' assistant and successor as head coach. "Most people remember him as a coach, but first and foremost, he was a teacher."
"He really knew what was important in life, which was relationships with people he cared about," said Kaps' son Ryan, who went on to play basketball at the University of Washington and Weber State University.
"He was one in a million," said longtime friend Dave Blake. "He would drop everything to help someone in need."

Featured Chef – Eric Thomson
Eric Thomson started his culinary career at the Hotel Utah in the early 80s as an American Culinary Federation Apprentice Chef. After graduation, stops included: The Lodge at Pebble Beach, French boutique restaurants in Palo Alto and Mountain View CA, and an Italian Restaurant, Trattoria Romana. Feeling the itch to continue his professional education, enrollment in UNLV for a bachelor’s degree in Hotel Administration became paramount. Following graduation, he was a Room Chef for three restaurants in the Palace Station Hotel and Casino.
Moving back to California in 1998 started the best years of his corporate career – three years plus with Bon Appetit Management Co. (BAMCO) as a chef and catering manager for Sysco Systems in San Jose, CA. It was there his diverse background in flavors and textures started, being introduced to Indian cuisine, Thai, and other Asian fare. The next several years were spent working for Guckenheimer Inc., another corporate foodservice company, as an account manager and area manager in the San Francisco Bay area for accounts such as VISA, Adobe software, SAP, BEA, and several law firms.
Tedescos is the second restaurant operated by the Thomsons, the first was near Auburn, CA. Christina and Eric both try to provide the community with a quality dining experience and work with local groups such as WAG, the Boys and Girls Club and Pet Possie, and help them raise money through sponsored events and catering.
Featuring Wines of the North Olympic Peninsula
Camaraderie Cellars – Don Corson started Camaraderie Cellars with his wife Vicki in 1992. At that time there were only about 50 active wineries in Washington State. Now there are more than 900. Over the years the winery has grown from just 200 cases to over 3,500, and has garnered several hundred major local, national and international awards, including the prestigious Jefferson Cup and recognition by Sunset Magazine. Don and Vicki have been generous supporters of community arts and health campaigns by crafting unique, specialty fundraising wines like the Confluence you are drinking tonight.
Harbinger Winery – Sara Gagnon’s Port Angeles roots run deep. Her current home sits on a portion of the orchard land homesteaded by her greatgrandparents at the turn of the last century. Sara began making wine at the “ripe” old age of 20; her first creation being a blackberry wine from fruit picked off Gagnon land. In 2000, Gagnon accepted an apprenticeship under Don Caudill, the former owner and winemaker of Olympic Cellars. Six months later, Caudill retired and Sara became one of Washington State’s youngest winemakers. Harbinger signifies “good things to come.”

Hand blown by Massimilano Schiavon who continues to masterfully merge sleek graceful lines with distinctive, timeless design
Murano glass sculpture on etched glass base is by Massimilano Schiavon (hand blown in 2008) is 28 inches high and 12 inches wide.
Includes certificate of guarantee & expertise.
“IL PRIMO” Murano Glass Sculpture
Schiavon was born in Murano, Italy in 1971 into a generational glassmaking family. His paternal grandfather, Alfio Schiavon, began his own furnace in 1945. This would later serve as a platform for inspiration, instilling in Massimo the passion for art pieces of quality and refinement.
In 1998, Schiavon began working in his father's factory, where, with the collaboration of the glass master Claudio Zama, he began to combine different techniques that he had learned in the years past. Each one-of-a-kind vessel expresses harmony and balance and is completely handmade according to the ancient Murano traditions. His technique is distinguished primarily by the composition of the colors, achieved by heating together multicolor glass canes at 750°C which are then fused and blown with clear crystal.

Take home the original painting by Andréa Woods used for the new Confluence wine!
Confluence II Original Painting
“When Don told me the theme of “Confluence” for this fundraiser, I thought of rivers joining to multiply and make larger tributaries and eventually joining the sea. I went down to where the Elwha meets the Strait at the beach. I couldn’t get to the spot where the river joins the Strait.
Andréa is a contemporary impressionist oil painter living in the Pacific NW where she finds inspiration for her paintings.
So I back tracked and I came down along the river. That is where I saw the scene that I have painted. It was clear what I wanted to do and the painting came easily. This is a special place and I feel it is a special painting. We are all part of a
together to make something bigger. Individuals,
Art is a visual language. The artist communicates their concept and feeling, their intent, to the viewer through the painting. A strong foundation in drawing and composition is the basis for all her art works. She continues to learn from and study current, and old master artists, with Russian Impressionism as a strong influence. "We never stop learning, it is a wonderful process of exploration". Although she has worked in many mediums, oil paints are her preferred materials, using the rich colors and varying textures to create places where we would all like to go.

Deliver to patients at Olympic Medical Cancer Center prior to Thanksgiving #9
Deliver A Dozen Pies to Patients at the Cancer Center
The winning bidder will be able to deliver a dozen pies to patients at the Olympic Medical Cancer Center the day prior to Thanksgiving.
“The words “pumpkin” and “pie” when placed together are pretty much synonymous with Thanksgiving, home and family. Pumpkin pie was one of the pies my grandma made for our family every year and the aroma of it baking always brings her to mind. She used canned pumpkin and I’m not talking about pumpkin puree that she canned herself. Nope, my grandma firmly believed that canned pumpkin from the supermarket was just fine for pie……Grandma was right.”

Olympic Medical Cancer Center’s patient navigation helps Neah Bay resident get needed medication
Bob Buckingham and his wife, Betsy, started running a food truck after retirement – Bob retiring from the Port of Neah Bay where he was the director and his wife from the Sophie Trettevick Indian Health Center. But, about two years ago, when he struggled to keep up with the food truck operation, he knew it was time for a visit to his primary care provider.
“I was getting kind of run down and we had to shut [the food truck] down because I really couldn’t keep up with my wife working on it,” Bob says.
Bob had not been to the doctor in about five years, and he made the two-hour trip from Neah Bay to his primary care provider in Sequim, where blood work revealed that he had chronic myeloid leukemia.
“It was a bit of a surprise,” he says.
His doctor referred him to Olympic Medical Cancer Center in Sequim.
“I am truly thankful for all that they’ve done and all that they continue to do,” Bob says of the cancer center team.
At first, Bob’s treatment required the journey from Neah Bay to Sequim about every two weeks, before eventually being reduced to every month and now, every three months.
The Patient Navigation team at Olympic Medical Cancer Center has worked with Bob to apply for funding to cover most of the expenses for his medication.
“If it weren’t for the team at the Cancer Center, I don’t think we could have started my medication therapy due to the high cost,” Buckingham says.
The Patient Navigator program is designed to provide services and resources to help guide patients through the health care system so they can focus on treatment and well-being. Thanks to the generous support of the OMC Foundation, these resources include financial assistance, lodging and transportation assistance, social work, disease and treatment reference materials, community support, respite housing, additional health care support and more.
“This has made all the positive difference in the world for my family and I. Having cancer is one thing, but having this amazing cancer care team has really meant life to me,” Bob says. “I wasn’t sure what we were going to do at that point in time. When I found out the cost of the medication needed, I didn’t think I could meet those costs. We were so relieved when the cancer care team helped apply for alternate resources to help with this financial burden.”
As his treatment progresses, Buckingham feels supported by Olympic Medical Cancer Center.
“The cancer care center has made this journey much more tolerable. It is heartwarming to witness every team member treat me so well every step of the way,” he said.
