Technology helps children cope with cancer StatePoint One of the toughest aspects of managing cancer in children is communicating with young patients, say parents and healthcare experts. “There were many times when my daughter did not want to talk or communicate her feelings,” says Joycelynn Sanchez of now 6-year-old Jiani, who at age 3, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “She grew tired of the pokes and the questions and would become withdrawn.” Fortunately, many parents and doctors are finding that new technology can help young patients like Jiani better communicate their feelings and manage their condition. For example, My Special Aflac Duck, a creation of Aflac, an insurance industry leader, and Sproutel, a research and development workshop, is an award-winning smart

“We thought there must be a way to help alleviate some of the burden... Aaron Horowitz, CEO and co-founder of Sproutel companion that nuzzles, quacks and dances with the lifelike movement of a real duckling. While entertaining, it’s not a toy. It’s specifically designed to help comfort, teach and empower young patients as they go through their journey with cancer, reflecting the belief that children need more than medicine to cope with the stress and loneliness that often come with their disease. “On average, childhood cancer treatment lasts more than 1,000 days,” says Aaron Horowitz, CEO and co-founder of Sproutel. “We thought there must be a way to help alleviate some of the burden.”

Using the new companion technology, children can communicate their emotions by tapping colorful emoji cards to a sensor on the duck’s chest. Tap an emoji with a happy expression and it responds with delighted quacking. Choose the sad face and it lowers its head and sighs. Children can mirror their care routines through a compatible web-based app, including medical play and feeding and bathing their duck via augmented reality. It also dances, quacks, and nuzzles to help distract and calm them. Its exterior can even be removed, washed and

sanitized. Creation of the comforting companion is an extension of Aflac’s 22-year, $122 million commitment to childhood cancer causes. Their goal is to provide this feathered friend free of charge to all newly diagnosed children, nearly 16,000 each year according to the National Cancer Institute. Distribution, targeted to begin this coming winter, will be through hospitals, and the robotic duck will not be for general consumer sale. Jiani’s treatment, which lasted three years and included various chemotherapies, as well as countless spinal taps and antibiotics, was completed in December 2017. “There were some tough times, but through it all, she was a champion,” says Sanchez. “Knowing tough times for other children with cancer may be made a little easier with the help of technology makes me very happy.”

Local hospitals collaborate Brewster, Tonasket hospitals share CEO Scott Graham By Amber Hedington The Chronicle BREWSTER — Three Rivers Hospital in Brewster and North Valley Hospital in Tonasket are making history by sharing a chief executive officer. Earlier this year board leaders from both districts approved to collaborate by sharing Scott Graham as the districts’ leader. “Things are going

well with working at both hospitals,” Graham said in late August. “I’ve only been at it for about three weeks and there’s a lot to learn, but the North Valley team has been really friendly and welcoming, and the Three Rivers team is very supportive. “So, in a nutshell, so far, so good,” he said. “I think the benefits to this model is that it provides a pathway towards streamlining administrative overhead and increasing sharing of resources, which will ultimately reduce costs. It also gives us the opportunity to work towards a more integrated delivery of health care for Okanogan County.” Graham said one of the biggest challenges of sharing his time between two hospital districts is the geography – travel time. It’s about an hour drive one-way between the hospitals. “However, this is new and so there are likely things we don’t know that may make it more difficult than we anticipated but so far, this approach seems to make sense and we want the chance to innovate and use our collective strengths to better

Scott Graham cope with the pressures facing rural hospitals and rural communities,” he said. “I would say that the most immediate challenge is the amount of geography that has to be traveled. It takes time and resources to be in two places that are as far apart as Three Rivers and North Valley. “However, this is a good time of year to try this since the roads are dry and the weather is warm,” he said. “Winter might

be more of a challenge and I may have to stay in Omak rather than going home at the end of the day if travel is an issue.” Aaron Kester, spokesman for North Valley Hospital, said Graham has reached out to hospital employees and has been encouraging the community and employees to “bring him any thoughts and

North Valley opens wound care clinic Clinic will treat non-healing, complex injuries TONASKET — North Valley Hospital has a new wound care clinic for non-healing and complex wounds. The clinic provides the expertise of Pat Gauthier, RN, who has 25 years of experience in advanced wound treatment. Gauthier worked in the San Francisco Bay area from 1991 to 1996 with HF Systems covering all Gauthier nursing homes in the East Bay from Oakland to Livermore. "This was my boot camp for learning about all types of wounds as I consulted on greater than 100 severe wounds every week and developed treatments based on

Scott will split his time equally between both hospitals and will be available to both locations by email, phone, or text while at either location.” The collaboration, at this point, has been Graham familiarizing himself with the facility, employees, and community of North Valley Hospital, Kester said. “Scott recognizes the need to fully understand the operations

The shared CEO model is only one example of recent collaboration between local hospital districts. “All of these conversations are focused on saving costs, sharing resources, and improving the quality of care delivered,” Kester said. “North Valley Hospital is excited to be part of this new approach to working together and keeping care local in Okanogan County,” stated Kester. “I’m really happy for the opportunity to try something this innovative, positive and impactful to the health care system,” Graham said. “So far, there’s a lot of positive energy and with the use of technology (email, texts, mobile phones) we are able to stay connected even when there are many miles between us.”

groups. From 1998 to 2000, her work partnered her with DeRoyal covering five states and national wound care trade shows. She also worked with KCI to inservice the VAC for three months from Tacoma to Bellingham. "I love to heal wounds and to see them heal more quickly than expected. The national average for healing chronic complex wounds is 40 - 60 percent. The techniques I use heal 90 - 95 percent. I have had the opportunity to consult on wounds from Oroville to Davenport as well as with MidValley and North Valley Hospitals since 2000." Patients in the northern Okanogan County no longer have to travel to receive wound care. Everything a patient needs for healing complex wounds is now at North Valley, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on with a referral from a primary care physician.

Mid-Valley pens agreement with WSU Omak hospital, clinic partner with Elson S. Floyd School of Medicine OMAK — Mid-Valley Hospital and clinic recently signed an affiliation agreement with Washington State University’s School of Medicine. The clinical partnership will allow Mid-Valley to provide preceptorships, or mentored experiences with licensed physicians for on the job training and supervision. In the medical student’s third year of education, MidValley Hospital and clinic will be a clinical site for longitudinal integrated clerkships (LIC), a model of long-term clinical education where the same students continue to return to the same rural location. “As an alumni of WSU I’m very excited to have our hospital partnering with the Elson S. Floyd School of Medicine,” MidValley Hospital Chief Executive Officer Alan Fisher said. “The coordination between the two entities can lead to improved medical care in our rural communities. Go Cougs.” The preceptorships and LIC’s allow a medical student to learn the foundational sciences of medicine combined with immersion and development of the fundamentals of clinical practice. This method allows the student to follow patient cases all the way through and develop familiarity and relationships within the Omak area.

The Chronicle

Mid-Valley Hospital is located at 810 Jasmine Street in Omak. WSU’s website states “LICs are a relatively new and innovative concept in clinical learning… The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is proud to be one of a handful of U.S. medical schools that has adopted the LIC as its primary clinical training model for all students… Advantages include retaining empathy, improving recall, and building strong relationships with patients and preceptors.” Elson S. Floyd is a brand new college of medicine founded in 2015, with the first cohort beginning in August of 2017.
