HISTORY COMES TO LIFE THROUGH A DIVERSE COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EXPERIENCES

World-renowned Boys Town, a National Historic Landmark District, features chapels, statues and gardens, the Hall of History museum, Father Flanagan’s House, and the visitors center – home to the world’s largest ball of stamps. Military aircraft and aerospace artifacts are on display at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. This prized collection tells the story of a critical time in America’s history with the Strategic Air Command’s efforts to preserve peace during the Cold War. The Smithsonian affiliate is home to the nation’s largest collection of Cold War aircraft and artifacts. Visitors will find 300,000 sq. ft. featuring missiles, an impressive collection of iconic aircraft, and spacecraft such as the Apollo Command Space module. Those looking for a little adventure will enjoy the flight simulator, and families can make discoveries about science, technology and physics at the Children’s Learning Center. As one of the first Latino art and history museums in the Midwest, El Museo Latino* is located in history-rich, culturally diverse South Omaha. The intimate gallery offers temporary and permanent exhibits along with educational programming and a tradition of visual and performing arts. El Museo Latino organizes and presents special events throughout the year, including Cinco de Mayo in May and Hispanic Heritage Month in September. With interactive exhibits, artwork and artifacts, experience what it was like to live as a Mormon pioneer during their westward migration to the Salt Lake Valley at the Mormon Trail Center at Winter Quarters. Guided tours are available or take a self-guided tour. Admission is free. Get a glimpse into 19th century life at General Crook House Museum*. View period costumes, furnishings and decorative arts. Guests are welcome to stroll the heirloom garden with more than 110 varieties of flowers and plants. Visit in November and December when this living history museum is decked out for the holidays. Audio tours available. The Gerald R. Ford Birthsite and Gardens features presidential mementos, an informational kiosk and a rose garden complete with a colonnade in honor of former First Lady Betty Ford. Another notable Omaha birthsite is that of human rights activist Malcolm X*. The 17-acre developing memorial features a visitor center, community garden, and plaza with a historical marker commemorating where Malcolm X first lived with his family. Head to nearby Council Bluffs for hands-on fun at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum*. The museum chronicles more than 150 years of American railroad history. Visitors will discover photographs and documents from the creation of the transcontinental railroad to a collection of artifacts from Abraham Lincoln’s life and death.
