2017/2018 COMMUNITY REPORT

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT It’s been gratifying to have participated in the growth and expansion of Omaha Performing Arts during its first 13 years of operations, and that progress was evident during our 2017/2018 Season. Since inception, we’ve welcomed more than 4 million visitors to our venues and have expanded our Education and Community Engagement programs. Our impact is significant even beyond Omaha’s city limits, and we now generate almost $48 million in annual economic impact on the local and state economies. With an upcoming season that includes HAMILTON, we are attracting new visitors and patrons. All of this growth has been made possible by the generous donors, corporations, philanthropists, patrons and volunteers in our community, and we are profoundly grateful to them. We are proud to be a destination for the highest level of performing arts and to continue to realize the vision of one of our founders, the late Dick Holland. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank everyone who contributes to our achievements. As we plan for the future, we are confident that we can continue to build on our success together.

John Gottschalk, Chair

The celebration of the Orpheum Theater’s 90th Anniversary reverberated throughout our 2017/2018 Season! As patrons shared their treasured memories of this beloved venue with us, we were reminded how profoundly the arts can impact people’s lives. With more than 400 performances and events at the Holland Performing Arts Center and the Orpheum, we were able to reach patrons from all parts of our community. In celebration of the Orpheum’s anniversary, we made numerous upgrades to enhance the theater experience, and to date, we’ve invested over $20 million in the iconic venue thanks to the generous donors in our community. We also expanded our Education and Community Engagement programs, including the Nebraska High School Theater Academy, which connects more than 7,000 students in 78 schools across all of Nebraska with incredible Broadway experiences and classes. I’m especially proud that Omaha Performing Arts was recognized with the 2018 Governor’s Arts Award for our impact on the arts and our work across Nebraska. My deepest appreciation goes to our donors, arts partners, resident companies, the community, the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers for another extraordinary season at Omaha Performing Arts. These are the people who understand how the arts touch us — and how important they are, now more than ever. We look forward to 2018/2019 and hope you’ll join us for the next extraordinary season!

Joan H. Squires, President

MISSION MOMENT

Meet First-Time Subscribers Emily Rogers and Sara Smith Sisters Emily Rogers, 23, and Sara Smith, 33, love Broadway. They’ve been coming to shows at the Orpheum Theater together for 10 years — sometimes seeing every Broadway musical in the season. In 2017/2018, they decided to continue their tradition as subscribers. One of their favorite shows this season was FINDING NEVERLAND. “They performed the whole show with so much power and emotion,” Sara said. “There was so much magic in that show.” At every show, the sisters take a photo under the marquee and save their program books as keepsakes. “Each show has different memories and is special in its own way,” Emily said.

DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS EXPANDS TO 10 OMAHA SCHOOLS The program for grades 3-6 expanded to include 10 area elementary schools and provided teachers with training and resources needed to put on a Disney KIDS musical. More than 700 students participated in the program developed by Disney Theatrical Group.

MISSION MOMENT

Meet the NHSTA National Nominees Sierra Lancaster and Nathan Bonsall This summer was a dream come true for Sierra Lancaster and Nathan Bonsall. The Nebraska High School Theater Academy students performed on Broadway at the iconic Minskoff Theatre. Every year, we select two outstanding students from NHSTA to represent the state at the Broadway League’s Jimmy® Awards in New York City. Sierra from Millard North High School and Nathan from Kearney High School outperformed more than 50 students for the opportunity. “This was something that I had been working toward for such a long time and I had been wanting it so bad; when it finally happened, it felt like a huge dream come true,” Nathan said. They spent a week learning from Broadway professionals, experiencing Broadway shows and rehearsing for the awards ceremony. “I learned not to compare myself to others,” Sierra said. “As I continue into college and beyond, this is an important lesson that I will keep with me.” Both students are currently pursuing degrees in musical theater. Sierra is attending Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and Nathan is attending Millikin University.

Since 2002, Omaha Performing Arts has invested over $20 million into the venue thanks to our generous donors.

ORPHEUM OPEN HOUSE We invited everyone in the community to the Orpheum Open House. More than 1,200 people took tours, viewed artifacts on display and learned about the treasured theater’s history.

ORPHEUM 90TH MASTER CLASS AND CELEBRATION Actor Alex Gemignani and pianist Colin Welford from Chicago’s production of HAMILTON led a Broadway workshop for Nebraska High School Theater Academy students. Later that evening, Gemignani was joined by NHSTA students and children from our Disney Musicals in Schools programs for a performance honoring our donors.

MISSION MOMENT

Meet members of The Legacy Circle Jennifer and Chad Rutar Theater is a family tradition for Jennifer and Chad Rutar. The Omaha natives love bringing their daughters to shows at the Orpheum Theater and Holland Center. “Those are our favorite memories,” Jennifer said. Already members of The Presenters, Chad and Jennifer wanted to further their commitment to building a bright future for the arts in Omaha. So, this year they made a planned gift to Omaha Performing Arts and became members of The Legacy Circle . “I think supporting the arts is important, because the theater has always been a gathering place in the community,” said Jennifer. “It’s a connector, it brings people together.”

The Legacy Circle plays a pivotal role in the future of Omaha Performing Arts. When donors include us in their will or estate plans, it ensures we’re able to continue our mission for generations to come. “Our children are involved, we’re involved,” said Chad. “It’s something where we can pay it forward and share that gift for future generations. It’s an honor to do so.”

“As a Presenter, I have developed friendships with terrific people who believe, as I do, that now more than ever, we need the arts to remind us and help us connect with the beauty inherent in us as human beings.” – Tracy Hoye, Presenters Member

40 BELOW Our young professionals group celebrated its first anniversary this season. Members helped promote our mission through volunteering at events such as Jazz on the Green, Heartland Pride Festival and the Lindsey Stirling concert. Members connected with artists during Meet and Greets with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Meredith Inglesby and Steve Blanchard from Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID.

“Being able to meet other individuals, other young professionals and other young families has been fantastic. Being able to bring my own kids to the events to expose them to the arts has been one of the proudest things I’ve been able to do while being a part of [40 Below].” – Dan Lassek, 40 Below committee member 38
