ne of my family’s favorite holidays is fastapproaching. Sometimes school-age kids can get kind of squirmy about Valentine’s Day. But this fun-loving holiday provides a great opportunity for parents to teach their children how to show love, kindness and appreciation for others year-round. In our home, we try to visit or write letters to relatives we haven’t seen in some time. We also love to make treat baskets for some of the most important people in our lives who are sometimes overlooked. They include the bus driver who safely takes my children to school, their teachers and the mail carrier who delivers our precious packages regardless of the weather. Some of the best gifts are free – whether it’s singing a song about love and friendship or making a homemade Valentine. This issue is loaded with cute craft ideas and ways to spread the love while counting down the days to Feb. 14. Most importantly, don’t forget to tell your children of all ages that you love them. Those three words have a lasting effect. In fact, remember to use words to build your kids up every chance you get. Also in this issue, get a sneak peek of Kidz Explore: A fun-filled family event held Feb. 14-15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs.

a

re you heading back to work? Whether you’re at the end of your maternity leave or the last of your kids has started kindergarten, you’ll need a few essentials before joining the world of working women.

Wardrobe

laptop bag

lunch tote

Your wardrobe probably needs a little updating. It’s best to invest a large portion of your budget into classic and versatile pieces that you can mix and match. Younkers, The Limited and LOFT all carry suiting basics that can be mixed and matched or worn together for a more professional look. These stores also mark merchandise down and offer great sales so you can really stock up.

You may need to pack a full day’s work, important documents and an iPad in your bag for the day. Find something roomy with several pockets so you can put everything you need in one place and stay organized. Landmark Luggage & Gifts at One Pacific Place has a wide assortment of leather bags, briefcases, totes, backpacks and rolling bags.

You’ll probably be sharing a refrigerator with several coworkers. If you’re going to take a lunch to work, skip the ugly brown bag and store your PB & J in a stylish tote. Omaha’s Artifact Bag Co. has a slew of cute lunch-worthy totes in several colors. Not only will your lunch bag be better for the environment, but it will be envied too!

desk accessories

outerWear

Most offices have an appointed supply cabinet or closet for desk necessities. But your desk is the one place where you can show off a little personality. Spruce Interiors & Gifts in Midtown is a favorite stop for candles, paperweights, notebooks and all sorts of containers for paper clips and thumbtacks. Make your desk your own little oasis at the office.

Curling up at home on a cold day is no longer an option. Use work as an excuse to spiff up your winter coat collection. You may want something longer for the days when you wear a skirt or dress and/or something roomy for bulky sweaters or suit jackets. You can find great deals on designer coats and jackets at places like TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Burlington Coat Factory.

A long day at the office would be even longer without your morning pick-meup. Stay caffeinated on the way to work (and maybe all day) with a thermal travel or ceramic mug. While you can find them virtually anywhere, support local businesses like Village Grinder and A Hill of Beans Coffee Roasters for coffee and coffee-related accessories.

Claim Your Space Fall in love with your house all over again with these easy room-by-room tips. Kitchen

Clear your countertops of everything except the items you use daily. Each evening, take 10 minutes to clean the kitchen and wipe off the countertops. This gives you a refreshing start to the next day.

Family room

Give all the stuff left behind in the family room a space in which to be found. A nice basket can collect everyone’s things until they are claimed. This is much better than having small items scattered all over the room.

Play room

If you have little kids, this room is all about acceptance: It will be a mess every day that they play in the room. But a quick 10-minute cleanup each evening helps start the next day with a clean slate.

entry closet

Give each family member a cubby in the closet. This can be something as simple as a hanging sweater organizer. This makes it easy to find hats, gloves and scarves on cold days.

Guest bathroom

The only items needed in this bathroom are soap, towels and toilet paper.

10

master bath

Clean out your top drawer, and only keep items that are used every day in that drawer. If you have a lot of hair products on the countertop, consider getting a caddy to contain them and keep it under the sink. Pulling them out each day isn’t hard. Just be sure to put them back!

laundry room

Label bins or baskets with the name of each family member. Toss clothes in the appropriate basket when you fold them. That way, each family member can take his or her basket to their bedroom instead of laundry accumulating in the living room.

dininG room

Set the table with pretty dishes. Not only is this decorative, but it prevents you from putting miscellaneous stuff there.

master bedroom

Set a timer for 15 minutes and put those piles of clothes away.

master closet

Flip all of your hangers backward. Switch the hangers back to the right way after you wear something. This makes it easy to find out what you should donate.

Kid’s closet

Create an “I don’t want this” spot for the kids (or you) for donations and hand-me-downs. You can sort it out after it’s full.

Kid’s bathroom

Can you say toothpaste in the sink? Keep cleaning wipes on the countertop so your kids can do a quick cleanup of their messes.

Kid’s bedroom

Create zones for little kids such as for reading, playing and getting ready. It can help them focus more easily, especially when they need to get ready for school.

storaGe room

Contain and label. Get everything off the floor onto shelves. The use of containers and vertical space will allow for more efficient storage.

GaraGe

Make the walkway from the car door to your home’s entry a storage area for the kids’ sports equipment. This makes it easy for them to grab their basketball, for example, on the way to practice. It will also make it easy for them to put it away when they get home.

‘Happy Place’ Bright colors, room to work and shelves for shoes. TEXT CHRIS CHRISTEN PHOTOGRAPHY JEFFREY BEBEE

F

ashion sewist and blogger Mimi Goodwin relocated from Los Angeles to Omaha last fall, and immediately set up her closet and studio – ahead of any other room in her family’s new house. “They’re my livelihood,” the entrepreneur says of the cosmic pink work area and adjoining walk-in

12

closet. They came together in a blaze of D.I.Y. projects that collected Instagram and Facebook “likes” by the thousands for @MimiGStyle. The jaw-dropper: Her boutique-like closet. “I shop my closet every morning when I get dressed,” she says. “It’s my happy place, my absolute joy.”

MIMI’S CLOSET, AT A GLANCE - Hanging racks on three walls hold clothing organized by type: Dresses, pants, sweaters, blouses, coats, etc.

- Shelving for shoes dominates the fourth wall. Here, shoes are organized by color, pattern and heel height. To gain space, Mimi alternates the direction of some of her shoes: One shoe faces the front, while its mate faces the back. - In her bookcase system from IKEA, adjustable shelving accommodates different heel heights. - Two portable kitchen islands from IKEA anchor the center of the room. Rings, earrings, watches and other “sparkly things” get top billing here. Vintage bowls and plates keep small pieces corralled and tidy, while fabric trays display belts, scarves and gloves that are in heavy rotation. - Go-to handbags and totes sit on wire shelves. - Fabric bins on the upper shelves store accessories that only come out occasionally. D.I.Y. necklace holder: A bargain canvas print with nail heads!

Chocolate à la française

A

s anyone who has attempted to work with chocolate knows, it’s really temperamental. Not only does it have to be exactly the right temperature, but you have to work quickly or it will set. “It’s bipolar,” Kyle Shoemaker jokes. He combined flavors that he loves for this recipe using imported chocolate from France as the base. If you have never had European chocolate, you may be

14

in for a surprise. “The French are not big on sweet,” he says, adding that American chocolate is only 20 percent cocoa (and 80 percent cream and sugar), while its French counterpart is less sweet with 64 percent cocoa. But you certainly won’t be disappointed. Rather than a sugar rush, this chocolate offers delightful notes of goat cheese and lemon. Who knew chocolate could be so versatile?

WHiTE CHOCOlATE, GOAT CHEEsE & lEmON CHOCOlATE Kyle has gained an appreciation for goat cheese, a classic French flavor, since he started working at Le Petit Paris. “I like to throw in a little savory,” he says. The arugula garnish adds both a pop of color and a peppery note. WHAT YOU NEED 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup white chocolate, broken into small pieces ½ cup mild goat cheese Zest of 1 lemon 1 cup 59 percent tempered dark chocolate, melted (available at Whole Foods) Apricot glaze (Use equal parts of apricot jam and water) Edible gold glitter and fresh arugula leaves for garnish WHAT YOU DO 1. Heat cream in a saucepan to a boil. 2. Put white chocolate in the stainless steel mixing bowl of a stand mixer. 3. Pour hot cream over chocolate. With a rubber spatula, slowly stir the cream to incorporate. 4. With the whisk attachment of the stand mixer, whip on medium speed to cool and stiffen the mixture (20 to 30 minutes). 5. Add goat cheese and lemon zest. 6. With a cookie scoop, scoop into balls and place on parchment paper. 7. Place in refrigerator for 1 hour. Cut the edges off with a sharp paring knife or toothpick. 8. Dip in melted dark chocolate; cool. 9. Dip in apricot glaze, and then brush on gold and arugula leaves.

hat’s as sweet and fun as a homemade Valentine? A day at Kidz Explore. The World-Herald’s annual family festival of fun and learning is Feb. 14 and 15 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. Follow the Mad Scientist in a series of experiments dealing with the crushing nature of pressure on the Strategic Air & Space Museum stage. Between experiments, sample food, have your face painted, ride ponies and try your luck at bowling – on a lane made out of noodles! And see how easy physical activity can be with UnitedHealthcare Community Plan’s blender bikes – and help create a healthy drink. Keep an eye on the main stage throughout the day for performances by actors from the Rose Theater, as well as exotic animals. Kids going 100 mph with excitement? Reduce the rpms in the Coloring Café sponsored by Brownell-Talbot. At Toddler Village, the whole family can string beads, knead Play-Doh and paint with non-traditional tools. You can even make Valentine’s Day cards for each other. The show’s 50-60 family friendly exhibitors will keep you engaged, too, with booth activities, games and freebies.

The typical plastic bag is used for just 12 minutes, and the average family brings home 1,500 bags per year. Consumers worldwide use one trillion plastic bags per year – or nearly 2 million a minute. Until bags are banned like they are in California, reuse your own.

take a time-out

When your child doesn’t listen or a specific rule has been broken, try a time-out. The technique works best for children ages 2 to 5, but it can be used throughout their childhood. Set the rules ahead of time. Choose a time-out spot (a boring place such as a chair that isn’t in a bathroom or bedroom). Do not discuss or negotiate the time-out. Set a time limit (one minute for every year of age). Source: American Academy of Pediatrics

Bloody ‘knowS’

Cold, dry weather can bring on a bloody nose, and when the blood starts gushing, nosebleeds can be frightening. Do this for yourself or a child: Remain calm. Sit up straight and lean your head forward. Pinch your nostrils tightly together with your thumb and index finger for 10 minutes. Just hold it and breathe through your mouth. Do not release your grip. Source: eMedicineHealth

the truth aBout lice

SeekingSitters Omaha Metro

Get over the “ick” factor and know this: Head lice don’t transmit serious diseases, and pets don’t spread lice. Surprising facts: Lice are very tiny – about the size of the commas in the next sentence. Live lice are dark and nearly impossible to see unless you comb through the hair, starting at the scalp, with a metal-toothed comb and see live bugs on the comb. They produce eggs – white dots called “nits”– that cement themselves to the hair. If a family member has lice, be prepared to throw bedding, pillows and stuffed animals in a hot dryer every day for two weeks. Wash the hair with a medicated shampoo every nine to 10 days to catch new hatchlings. Girls are more likely to have lice because they are social and affectionate with each other, but the length of hair makes no difference. See your child’s doctor for a prescription shampoo, and check the whole family’s heads with a metal-toothed comb. Source: Dr. Jyoti Mahapatra, emergency physician at Nebraska Medicine

Advice // dAnielle Herzog Sassy Housewife Danielle Herzog is a married mother of two and a former middle and high school teacher. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in counseling.

Should I Stay or Should I go now? Dear Sassy Housewife, My husband had an affair four years ago. I forgave him after two years of intense therapy and lots of work on our marriage. But this year, he hasn’t been as attentive and seems more withdrawn. I have recommended that we go back to therapy but he doesn’t want to. I’m attracted to someone at work and feel conflicted. My husband doesn’t seem interested in me anymore. Should I push away the person who is interested? Signed, Wandering Wife Dear Wandering, The simple answer – yes. Yes, you should push away the person who is interested in you right now. The big reason is that you’re still married. It, perhaps, might not be the marriage you want anymore, but it’s still a marriage. Do you remember the devastation

you felt when you found out that your husband cheated on you? Would you want to do that to someone else? Would you want to look in the mirror and see someone who has cheated on her husband – even if he might not be the person you want to be with? You don’t owe it to him, or even yourself. You owe it to the vows and the promises that you made on your wedding day. Your husband needs to know that you have feelings for someone else. You have to give him the chance to feel respected. One of the most common things I hear from someone who has been cheated on is that he or she wishes their spouse would have just told them they had feelings for someone else before they acted on them. You need to ask yourself if you want to be with your husband anymore. Your attraction to a guy at work isn’t the real issue. The real issue is whether you

want to stay with your husband. Only you know that answer. But at least give your husband the benefit of the doubt and a chance to plead his case. You never know what might be happening to your husband right now that he’s not sharing. Perhaps there is work stress or he is having a midlife crisis. Or perhaps he has just gotten caught up in the day-to-day aspects of life and hasn’t realized your needs. Put him first and then make your decision.
