Sarah & Eric B L AC K B I R D P H OTO G R A P H I E

MATCHMAKER Sarah Hollins and Eric Nagengast were introduced by their families. Eric did some training with Sarah’s dad as a student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Eric’s interest in asking Sarah out got a boost from his grandmother, UNMC donor Ruth Scott, who dropped a hint to her good friend, Sarah’s dad. And the rest is history. CLASSIC STYLE Eric proposed cliffside at a resort in California, where the couple now live. Sarah knew she wanted the ultimate classic wedding. “White flowers, black tuxedos and no Pinterest-y gimmicks,” she says. “I wanted to look like Grace Kelly.” DREAMY DESIGN Sarah works for celebrity bridal gown designers Ryan & Walter of Los Angeles, so she felt that all eyes would be on her dress. “They did not disappoint. I had many pieces to my look, including a jacket for the church and a detachable bow that I wore for part of the reception.” FLOWER POWER The biggest expense of the wedding – florals – also was the most important element for Sarah. “I do not regret spending the money. Everyone commented on how beautiful they were.” FAMILY AFFAIR Eric’s grandfather, Bill Scott, played the trumpet and sang while Eric and his mom danced to get the party started. Karly Jurgenson sang accompanied by acoustic guitar for the newlyweds’ first dance. Another sweet moment came when the designers revealed that they had been scheming with the bride’s mom to add

lace from her dress to the inside of Sarah’s gown. Sarah and Eric asked friends and family to help serve a meal at Ronald McDonald House Charities two days before the wedding. Sarah has been heavily involved with the organization since her reign as Miss Nebraska USA 2016. RIGHT MOMENT The couple’s first look was the moment the church doors opened. “I’m so happy we did it this way. People worry about pictures, but we got it all done.” JUST A SIP The groomsmen had one job and that was to supply the drinks for the trolley ride to the reception. Five minutes in and they were out, requiring a trolley stop at a gas station convenience store to buy more beer. “It was a really fun detour.” MAKE IT EASY Sarah says her best advice is to pick a good venue with all the extras, so you don’t have to worry about tablecloths and chargers. CHARITABLE HONEYMOON Eric is in residency as a plastic surgeon, and they participated in a mission trip to Vietnam to help with Operation Smile. “They screened over 220 patients, and we were able to witness many of them receive new smiles. It was so cool for me to watch Eric do what he loves and also have a part of my own as a medical records volunteer.” They also went to the Seychelles, where they scuba dived with turtles and sharks. SURROUNDED BY LOVE Their favorite gifts were picture frames and shelves to put them on. “I love that I can take the memories from that day and our lives and put them in the frames,” Sarah says.

LAVENDER BUD CONFETTI TEXT + STYLING JESSICA THOMPSON PHOTOGRAPHY KILEY CRUSE

Fragrant and green, lavender is a budding option for eco-friendly confetti. Turn the page to see our DIY tutorial.

LAVENDER BUD CONFETTI CONES WHAT YOU NEED Dried lavender buds (You can purchase in bulk, or strip the petals from lavender that has dried for 2-4 weeks.) 4-inch-by-4-inch squares of paper (the more repurposed, the better!) Scissors Tape or glue WHAT YOU DO Cut one square-inch corner out of each piece of paper. Twist the cut paper into a cone shape, being careful not to leave a hole at the bottom. Tape or glue in place. OFF THE PRECIOUS METAL BEAT Personalization rules, for him and for her

STORY CHRIS CHRISTEN PHOTOGRAPHY + STYLING MORRISSEY PHOTOGRAPHY

T

wenty-five years ago, a groom had two basic choices in wedding bands: gold and platinum. A generation later, tungsten carbide dominates in an explosion of exciting contemporary metals and styles for men’s rings. Often fashioned with wood, carbon fiber, titanium — even meteorite and palladium (both more precious than gold) — tungsten carbide is a natural material with staying power. Your first decision: Do you want a ring that’s durable, dependable and built to last or one that’s ultra cool but isn’t likely to give you a lifetime of wear? If you’re in the latter camp (i.e. not overly sentimental), a ring in a material that can’t be resized is likely to run you less. Still, look for a designer that offers a lifetime fit warranty and a replacement — just in case. As for gold and platinum? There’s a reason they’re called precious metals, darlings. See more rings on the following pages.

Lauryn & Jeremy K AY L I E S I R E K P H O T O G R A P H Y

O C TO B E R 1 1 , 2 0 1 9

MUSIC TO HER EARS After a first date on a snowy January night four years ago, Jeremy Mohr found himself proposing to Lauryn Nyhoff at Colorado’s Seven Peaks Music Festival. Country artist Dierks Bentley was singing the couple’s favorite song, “Woman, Amen,” when Jeremy got down on one knee and popped the question. NICE MIX Jeremy and Lauryn wanted a fall wedding with a romantic, rustic chic theme. The Barn at the Ackerhurst Dairy Farm in Bennington was the perfect blend of Jeremy’s small-town upbringing and her big-city glam, Lauryn says. ORIGINAL VOWS The couple wrote their vows, which she says made pledging their love extra-special. “We received so many compliments on them.” DANCE ROUTINE For a unique grand entrance, Jeremy and Lauryn worked up a choreographed routine to “The Git Up” by Blanco Brown. “We nailed it, and I don’t think anyone was expecting it. We had a blast planning that surprise for our guests. It was such a fun twist to a typical entrance.” FAVORITE THINGS Her advice is to include things that allow your guests to get to know you as a couple. Their menu featured their favorite datenight food: chips and salsa with margaritas and a fajita bar. “Our guests still rave about our food menu.” They also hired a videographer to create a short love story video, which they played between dinner and dancing. “It is a great way for your guests to get to know you as a couple. It’s also a perfect segue to get the party started,” she says. SPECIAL GIFTS Lauryn gave Jeremy an engraved watch. Jeremy purchased her wedding earrings and clutch. Their other favorite gift was a wooden cutting board crafted by a friend in Denmark who

T H E B A R N AT T H E A C K E R H U R S T D A I RY F A R M

sent progress pictures. “We love to cook, and now we have something that will last a lifetime with lots of sentimental value,” Lauryn says. NO HURRY Lauryn’s advice is to take the first month to enjoy your engagement instead of rushing into wedding details as she did. “I wish I would’ve taken a breath and just enjoyed the engagement with friends, family and Jeremy.” She also recommends asking your fiancé to name three things most important to him for the wedding. “You may be surprised (I was!) to find out what your groom has an opinion or vision about. It also prevents a Type A bride from completely taking over the wedding planning process and unintentionally steamrolling her ideas/wishes.” CAREFUL PLANNING They kept careful track of their wedding expenses. Venue was most important, and the open-bar package was their biggest investment. “But we wouldn’t have hosted a party any other way.’’ Having it all in one spot gave them more time to spend with guests. They loved the multiple ceremony options at Ackerhurst. “Which turned out to be essential as we had to transition our ceremony from outdoors to the indoor loft space at the last minute due to inclement weather.” STRONGER TOGETHER Jeremy says Lauryn “brings so much positivity into my life and does all the little things that sneak past me. Her dedication to making me a stronger individual in turn makes us a stronger couple.” Lauryn says Jeremy is always thinking of her and knows exactly how to calm the rush of her life. “Sometimes the best plans are no plans. When the world tells me I’m not enough, he encourages me to dream, explore and jump into any opportunity with two feet.” weddingessentialsmagazine.com

Let’s ask the Wedding Expert Blaine Muhle, Owner of The Fountains Ballroom

It’s the most wonderful WEDDING time of the year! What pros and cons should you consider for a Winter Wedding? Photography PRO: There’s a chance to get your powdery white, snow-filled, Pinterest-worthy photos.

CON: The weather is unpredictable. It may not snow... it may be a blizzard.

TIP: Be willing to accept either scenario. This is not only true in the winter; weather is unpredictable at any time of year. Keep in mind there are fewer daylight hours in the winter so start photos earlier in the day.

Venue/Vendor PRO: Many venues and vendors are more willing to negotiate pricing, due to it being a “slow” time for weddings/events.

CON: Many holidays and other events happen during those wintery months. Guest may already have plans or holiday traditions they’re not willing to break from. TIP: Allow for plenty of planning and travel time. Send out save the dates early to get on people’s calendars. If your ceremony and reception are in two locations, allow for plenty of travel time in between. Or better yet, hold both at the same venue! At The Fountains Ballroom, you get the venue for 14 hours. No matter what time of year, you can have ceremony and reception in the same space. There are many options we can discuss regarding this. Also, DISCOUNTS. All dates from November-April qualify for extra discounts and incentives. Email thefountainsweddings@gmail.com for details.

What extra details can you incorporate into your winter wedding? ATTIRE: Think of all the fun possibilities for your winter wedding wardrobe! Ladies, how about long sleeves, for the bride and bridesmaids too? Maybe add in a fun faux fur, wrap or shawl. Throw on your boots for a snowy photo! Gentlemen, you can have some fun too. Maybe a velvet tux, or adding a scarf? Unique socks are a trend during any season!

FLORAL & DECOR: You can throw in a slew of wintery greens — evergreen, pine, moss — while still adding in different varieties of eucalyptus for more texture. Florals in deep reds & purples look so rich against that winter white backdrop. Use metallics, like gold, silver and copper. Candles are undeniably classy or go the rustic route and tie in pine cones, branches, antlers and manzanita trees! Hypericum berries and brunia balls make any floral arrangement look and feel like winter. Use color palettes like elegant greens and whites, traditional reds and greens, or bold jewel tones. Did you know we have an in-house design and floral studio at The Fountains Ballroom? We work directly with your designer to create the wedding of your dreams in any season. We have rentals including linens, centerpieces, and custom designs. Floral for your tablescapes and bridal party can be included as well. Cut down that vendor and contact list by working with the same group that you’ll have on your wedding day!

LONG WEEKEND They married on a Friday because most of Jory’s family and friends were coming from Colorado and the couple wanted to spend as much time as possible with them. “We planned an after party for the next day so people didn’t rush home,” Jory says. TENDER MOMENT Jory had planned for her 80-year-old dad to partially walk her up to the altar. He had other ideas. “He insisted that he walk with me down the stairs and to the altar,” Jory says. “Everyone cried.” CHUG-A-LUG Jory’s childhood best friend and bridesmaid hid Smirnoff Ice under the head table as a prop for her wedding toast. “We got ‘iced’ so we had to chug the drinks in front of everyone. It was a riot and totally fitting for our friend groups!” SMILE! For the guest book, guests photographed themselves

The bride also carried her maternal grandma’s handkerchief. Evan wore cuff links that had belonged to his great-grandpa. Jory and Evan forgot their toasting glasses, a gift from Evan’s great-uncle Ted, but made sure to use them at the after party. “A note said that he saved them for when Evan met his wife.” The flowers were wrapped in lace from Jory’s mom’s wedding dress.
