Welcome to the 2018 Olympia Film Festival! As I Iook back over the years of film festivals that have been a part of my life at OFS, I clearly recall the many times when the programming and the experiences made me proud to be a part of this community and our thriving organization. From the concerts when everyone in the theater is wildly singing with the band, to the filmmakers who visit us to share their stories that inspire and enrich our lives, these moments are soul nourishing for me. The common thread is that we are here together, at the Capitol Theater, a place where inclusion, independence, and discovery has been cultivating for nearly 100 years and will for many more to come! Sometimes we watch a movie for the fun of it and expect nothing more than pure entertainment, but here at OFS we want you to walk away with something more. We want you to share what moves you, and we want you to feel what has been driving us all these years: the mission, the meaning, and the connection. The world of cinema is in constant flux and sometimes we miss the “not so simple days” of glorious 35mm film! However, you need not worry as we’ve still got celluloid at the fest, as well as loads of new narrative cinema, stand up comedy, documentaries, workshops, and panels. We are thrilled to have dozens of guests this year and look forward to introducing you to some new and some familiar faces in the industry. We proudly present to you the 35th Annual Olympia Film Festival! Audrey M. Henley Executive Director Olympia Film Society Discovery is the most electrically wonderful part of filmgoing. There are so many terrific new filmmakers whose inimitable ideas are challenging the narrative form of cinema—the future of the medium is always changing but forever uncompromising. The importance of supporting independent thinkers and the joy of sharing is what brings Olympia together. Much like with all of our festivals, this one owes everything to our talented, amazing and inspirational volunteers. I also want to thank Gillian Horvat, Jesse Ryan Knight, Mary Anne Carter and Christopher Day for inspiring me to explore and discuss new art. Finally, Vera Papisova, whose empathy, leadership, impassioned curiosity, and friendship moves me to discovery everyday. Festival

The Olympia Film Society (OFS) was formed in 1980 as a nonprofit 501(c)(3). OFS began leasing the Capitol Theater in 1990 and purchased the Capitol Theater in 2010. The 762-seat-theater, an Olympia landmark built in 1924, has been in continuous use as a theater. In the minds of many patrons, the Capitol Theater is an inextricable part of OFS’ identity. Mission Statement: The OFS mission is to present film, music, and art that engages our community, encourages volunteerism and ensures preservation of the Capitol Theater.

Welcome to the Festival. Below are a few guidelines to help you enjoy your movie going experience to the fullest. • Become an OFS member and support your favorite non-profit arts organization. Membership saves you money on tickets both during the festival and year-round. • Full Pass holders get priority admission to all events, but please show up early as seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. • Advance purchase of tickets is recommended. Some events are expected to sell out! • Every attempt is made to ensure that events start on time. Showing up late is not okay if you want to get a good seat, see the entire film, and avoid the enmity of fellow film goers. • Please remember to turn off your cell phones, and as always no talking during the films. No alcohol in the theater except at designated events, and no smoking, ever. • For sold out events, please arrive no later that 10 minutes prior to show time—any unfilled seats will be realeaseed to the general public for sale.

Alice is such a Scorpio. The Last Days of Disco bridges the carbonated euphoria of music with the barbed malaise of social postulations. Director Whit Stillman’s film follows the impatiently practical Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale) and the reticent Alice (Chloë Sevigny) as they dive into the kaleidoscopic, expectant, and glitter-flecked dance scene of 1980s Manhattan. Stillman’s erudite use of language, humor, and character development turns The Last Days of Disco into one of the most venerable and celebrated pictures of the past 20 years. WHIT STILLMAN Whit Stillman has written and directed five films, including “Damsels in Distress,” “Barcelona,” and “Metropolitan,” which was nominated for the 1991 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He has turned two of his films into novels: “The Last Days of Disco, With Cocktails at Petrossian Afterwards,” winner of France’s Prix Fitzgerald, and most recently, “Love & Friendship - In Which Jane Austen’s Lady Susan Vernon Is Entirely Vindicated.” He has also written and directed the pilot of a European set television series, “The Cosmopolitans.” Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up there and in New York’s Hudson Valley. He graduated from Harvard College where he was an editor of the Harvard Crimson. His first jobs were at New York’s the Village Voice and Doubleday publishing. He got into the film business working on Spanish films in the 1980s.

AVERY TRUFELMAN Avery Trufelman has been making stories about design at 99% Invisible for the past five years. She’s covered everything from garbage trucks in Taipei to swimming pools in Helsinki to art schools in Havana. She can also be heard on podcasts like Planet Money, Kamau Right Now, and The Allusionist, and is the voice of SFMoMA’s architecture audio tour. She has given talks about design and audio all over the country and was dubbed one of KQED’s “Women to Watch” in 2017. She has served as a judge for the 2017 British Podcast Awards, and the 2018 Miller Prize, and was the 2018 Roman Witt Visiting Artist at the Penny Stamps School of Art & Design at University of Michigan.

DISCOVERY IN CINEMA: SYMPOSIUM Free admission A discussion about the importance of discovery and independence in cinema, from the viewpoint of critics, actors, directors, producers, and nonprofit arts administrators. How has film affected us as a community? What does cinema provide as an art-form? What is the future of the medium?

Avery Trufelman has been making stories at 99% Invisible for the past five years. She was dubbed one of KQED’s “Women to Watch” in 2017. She has served as a judge for the 2017 British Podcast Awards, and the 2018 Miller Prize, and was the 2018 Roman Witt Visiting Artist at the Penny Stamps School of Art & Design at University of Michigan.

Violet Lucca is the Web Editor and Digital Director at Harper’s Magazine and a member of the New York Critics’ Circle. She was formerly the Digital Producer at Film Comment.

Eve Rydberg is an director, actor, and producer based in Chicago. Her film work includes MAKE OUT PARTY, which she starred in and produced alongside writer/director Emily Esperanza, BANANA SEASON directed by Sanghoon Lee and the upcoming title role in SISTER CARRIE directed by Daniel Nearing. Eve has just finished directing a short film titled HOME written by and starring Francis Guinan and Carolyn Hoerdemann.

Isabella L. Price is a filmmaker, writer, podcaster, host, performer and youtuber out of the PNW. She has spoken at PAX Prime, Emerald City Con, GeekGirlCon, and New York City Comic Con. Her topics include the intersection of race, sexuality, and gender in the fandom community. She is currently working on a paranormal podcast called Nocturnal Emissions on 104.9 FM, a youtube page, and a blog about intersectionality and gender studies in nerd communities.

Molly Hewitt is a Chicago based filmmaker, performance artist and production designer who performs under the alias Glamhag. She has performed at Mana Contemporary, Miami Art Basil, The Dfibrl8r Gallery in Chicago and many drag and DIY shows around Chicago. Their short film Maggie’s Problem was an official selection of the Chicago Underground Film Festival 2016 and the Olympia Film Festival 2017.

Christopher Day is a Seattle-based musician, filmmaker and nonprofit arts administrator. He currently acts as Managing Director of Northwest Film Forum, a non-profit film and arts center in Seattle, WA. He has also recorded music under the moniker Febrifuge. He also composed the score to the feature film I Want More, I Want Less. Chris has also edited numerous short films, as well as the feature film, The Life of Flowers.

Emily Esperanza’s work has been profiled in American Art Collector Magazine, Moviemaker Magazine, OUT Magazine, and PAPER Magazine. In 2016, Emily was selected as one of Chicago Newcity’s “Film 50” directors and was subsequently profiled in Filmmaker Magazine. Emily has screened work in cities across the country. An advocate for rebellious voices in cinema, Emily is the founder and a co-curator of Wretched Nobles, a Chicago-based monthly screening series.

Kanani Koster is a Seattle based Hapa (Japanese/Hawaiian/White) filmmaker. Alongside her husband she founded Cherry Street Films: Digital Storytelling for Youth. She began to shift her focus on her own filmmaking craft as a Director and Editor this last year where her short films have played at small festivals like UWTacoma’s APIFF and NWFF’s Local Sightings. Kanani often explores themes of mixed race identities, small towns, and displacement.

While trans identity is more visible than ever—the subject of television shows, talked about in the media, and tied up in controversial legislation—films that take us directly into the lives of trans youth are rare. Trans Youth, by closely following seven different subjects as they navigate both the tumult and the ecstasy of growing up, lets us get to know them as individuals rather than stereotypes. Sam Miller grew up in Rural Pierce County and moved to Olympia at the age of 14. He has lived in Olympia off an on since that time. In his 35 years on earth, He has been a farm hand, a ranch hand, an inmate, a wildland firefighter, a dishwasher, a warehouse worker, assistant preschool teacher, a chemical dependency counselor, and a bouncer. He has lived with Alcoholism and Methamphetamine addiction since his early teens. He is now in recovery going on 10 years and is currently a husband, father, student, Outreach Worker, and comedian.

Food For Change is an 82-minute documentary by filmmaker Steve Alves, focusing on food co-ops as a force for dynamic social and economic change in American culture. This is the first film to examine the important historical role played by food co-ops, their pioneering quest for organic foods, and their current efforts to create regional food systems. Additionally, the documentary explores how cooperatives today strengthen local economies and build food security. The countryside isn’t always as calm and peaceful as it’s made out to be, and the animals on this farm are particularly agitated: a fox who mothers a family of chicks, a rabbit who plays the stork, and a duck who wants to be Santa Claus. If you think life in the country is a walk in the park, think again. Directors Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert adapt Renner’s own acclaimed graphic novel into a delirious, delightful triptych of interlocking stories, with a pacing and visual spontaneity that harkens back to classic Looney Tunes shorts and slapstick tworeelers. “Singing Our Way to Freedom” is a vibrant, multilayered look at the life of Chicano musician, composer and community activist, Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez. The film chronicles Chunky’s life from his humble beginnings as a farmworker in Blythe, California to receiving one of the nation’s highest musical honors at the Library of Congress in Washington DC in 2013. As a young man in the 1960s, Chunky joined the picket lines in the California fields with Cesar Chavez, demanding justice and better wages for farmworkers. Early on, he discovered that the music he created could be a powerful weapon in creating social change and overcoming prejudice and racism. Dir. Kanani often explores themes of mixed race identities, small towns, and displacement.

She often creates music videos for her own songs, and composed the score for her latest work, the documentary Laura in Search of Teeth. She recently completed a documentary residency in Italy during which she filmed locals singing the songs of their childhood.

Michael is a celebrated and longstanding Olympia Film Society volunteer, and can likely bench press 10 film reel canisters at any given time. Even though Michael has degrees in mathematics, literature, and writing, his dog Bob is still the scholar of the household.

She has performed at Mana Contemporary, Miami Art Basil, The Dfibrl8r Gallery in Chicago and many drag and DIY shows around Chicago. Their short film Maggie’s Problem was an official selection of the Chicago Underground Film Festival 2016 and the Olympia Film Festival 2017.
