Welcome

Welcome to the 2018 Olympia Film Festival! As I Iook back over the years of film festivals that have been a part of my life at OFS, I clearly recall the many times when the programming and the experiences made me proud to be a part of this community and our thriving organization. From the concerts when everyone in the theater is wildly singing with the band, to the filmmakers who visit us to share their stories that inspire and enrich our lives, these moments are soul nourishing for me. The common thread is that we are here together, at the Capitol Theater, a place where inclusion, independence, and discovery has been cultivating for nearly 100 years and will for many more to come! Sometimes we watch a movie for the fun of it and expect nothing more than pure entertainment, but here at OFS we want you to walk away with something more. We want you to share what moves you, and we want you to feel what has been driving us all these years: the mission, the meaning, and the connection. The world of cinema is in constant flux and sometimes we miss the “not so simple days” of glorious 35mm film! However, you need not worry as we’ve still got celluloid at the fest, as well as loads of new narrative cinema, stand up comedy, documentaries, workshops, and panels. We are thrilled to have dozens of guests this year and look forward to introducing you to some new and some familiar faces in the industry. We proudly present to you the 35th Annual Olympia Film Festival! Audrey M. Henley Executive Director Olympia Film Society Discovery is the most electrically wonderful part of filmgoing. There are so many terrific new filmmakers whose inimitable ideas are challenging the narrative form of cinema—the future of the medium is always changing but forever uncompromising. The importance of supporting independent thinkers and the joy of sharing is what brings Olympia together. Much like with all of our festivals, this one owes everything to our talented, amazing and inspirational volunteers. I also want to thank Gillian Horvat, Jesse Ryan Knight, Mary Anne Carter and Christopher Day for inspiring me to explore and discuss new art. Finally, Vera Papisova, whose empathy, leadership, impassioned curiosity, and friendship moves me to discovery everyday. To everyone joining us this year, let’s celebrate storytellers, watch movies and make new friends! Rob Patrick Program Director Olympia Film Society

Mission Statement: The OFS mission is to present film, music, and art that engages our community, encourages volunteerism and ensures preservation of the Capitol Theater.

DISCO DANCE PARTY at Octapas Café

Alice is such a Scorpio. The Last Days of Disco bridges the carbonated euphoria of music with the barbed malaise of social postulations. Director Whit Stillman’s film follows the impatiently practical Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale) and the reticent Alice (Chloë Sevigny) as they dive into the kaleidoscopic, expectant, and glitter-flecked dance scene of 1980s Manhattan. Stillman’s erudite use of language, humor, and character development turns The Last Days of Disco into one of the most venerable and celebrated pictures of the past 20 years. Dir: Whit Stillman / 1998 / US / 113 min Post-film Q&A with director Whit Stillman, moderated by Diana Arens, MPA

Post-show Q&A with director

WHIT STILLMAN Whit Stillman has written and directed five films, including “Damsels in Distress,” “Barcelona,” and “Metropolitan,” which was nominated for the 1991 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He has turned two of his films into novels: “The Last Days of Disco, With Cocktails at Petrossian Afterwards,” winner of France’s Prix Fitzgerald, and most recently, “Love & Friendship - In Which Jane Austen’s Lady Susan Vernon Is Entirely Vindicated.” He has also written and directed the pilot of a European set television series, “The Cosmopolitans.” Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up there and in New York’s Hudson Valley. He graduated from Harvard College where he was an editor of the Harvard Crimson. His first jobs were at New York’s the Village Voice and Doubleday publishing. He got into the film business working on Spanish films in the 1980s.

An out of commission satellite picks up a lovelorn ballad on her radio antenna and descends to Earth to find the source of such sincere emotions. But on the way she is caught in the crossfire of a raging magical battle and is transformed into Satellite Girl, complete with rocket-like shoes and weapon-firing limbs. Meanwhile, the balladeer in question—a loser 20 something at a café open mic—meets the fate that befalls all broken-hearted lovers: he is turned into a farm animal. But love knows no bounds, and aided by the wise and powerful Merlin, a wizard who has been turned into a roll of toilet paper, our duo must evade the all-consuming incinerator monster, the wily pig witch, and other nefarious adversaries in an attempt to be together. MAKE OUT PARTY

Love and Happiness reverberating behind a blinking bulb in a nameless yard. Sweat hitting the concrete like pop rocks. The moon sizzling like wet pancake batter. Pollen and rustling leaves. Comprised of intimate and unencumbered moments of people in a community, Hale County This Morning, This Evening allows the viewer an emotive impression of the Historic South – trumpeting the beauty of life and consequences of the social construction of race, while simultaneously a testament to dreaming—despite the odds. An ironically comic look at Manhattan’s endangered debutante scene, Metropolitan chronicles the rise and ultimate decline of a group of young Park Avenue socialites who gather nightly to discuss love, honor, and the impending demise of their class. Director Whit Stillman’s lyrically acerbic dialogue bounds over cocktails and whirls around city streets. The characters, spearheaded by the injudicious snark of Nick Smith (Chris Eigeman), provide tongue-stung dialogue that would earn Stillman an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. 7:30 pm film

Led by Whit Stillman’s deliciously sardonic and lemon-wrung dialogue, Damsels in Distress revolves around a troupe of mannered students whose expectations are to be met. The 2011 film showcases Greta Gerwig’s scythe of a delivery, and provides the perfect platform for Stillman’s inimitable brand of warm - if not acidulous - humor. Flanked by Aubrey Plaza and Analeigh Tipton, Damsels supports a wonderful cast, assertive anarchy, performative quips, and choreographed dancing. Basically, everything you want. “Queerama” is a powerful assembly of shifting images and ethereal compositions. Archival footage ebbs and courses, while music from Hercules & Love Affair, John Grant, and Goldfrapp provide a buoyant chorus of fluttering notes and uncompromising passion. Someplace between documentary and theater, “Queerama” is a terrific kaleidoscope of a film that circumvents traditional narrative, and instead mines deep history and emotion with whirling heat and love. An experience like no other, Asquith delivers a deep swell of emotion that will leave you affected, contemplative, and inspired. Dir. Daisy Asquith / 2017 / UK / 70 min

This feature length documentary trails a handful of young trans Austinites as they forge and fortify their adult identities. While trans identity is more visible than ever—the subject of television shows, talked about in the media, and tied up in controversial legislation—films that take us directly into the lives of trans youth are rare. Trans Youth, by closely following seven different subjects as they navigate both the tumult and the ecstasy of growing up, lets us get to know them as individuals rather than stereotypes. As director Rebecca Adler documents her subjects without judgment, they are able to drop any pretense. They speak about their lives with an absence of formality or forced expression, which allows the audience to inhabit the distinct world and personalities of each subject. Traveling with these youths as they come into their own is a stirring tribute to the courage it takes to become one’s true self. Dir. Rebecca Adler / 2017 / US / 84 min

An accountant in Queens rents out the front of her store to a young man who repairs cell phones…and sometimes pickpockets them on the street. She tries to mentor him, but their friendship is tested by his opportunistic outlook in this unforgiving, damaged country. Although Hal Ashby directed a remarkable string of acclaimed, widely admired classics throughout the 1970s — Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Coming Home, Being There — he is often overlooked amid the crowd of luminaries from his generation. Amy Scott’s exuberant portrait explores that curious oversight, using rare archival materials, interviews, personal letters, and audio recordings to reveal a passionate, obsessive artist. Ashby was a Hollywood director who constantly clashed with Hollywood, but also a unique soul with an unprecedented insight into the human condition and an unmatched capacity for good. His films were an elusive blend of honesty, irreverence, humor, and humanity. Through the heartrending and inspiring HAL, you feel buoyed by Ashby’s love of people and of cinema, a little like walking on water. Dir. Amy Scott / 2018 / US / 90 min SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILM: THE VELVET UNDERGROUND PLAYED AT MY HIGH SCHOOL This animated documentary is the story of the Velvet Underground’s disastrous first public performance. While on stage for merely 20 minutes, The Velvet Underground performed three songs: “There She Goes,” “Venus in Furs,” and “Heroin.” The Summit High School audience responded with, as a band member recalled in 1983, a “murmur of surprise that greeted the appearance.” Dir. VIRUS TROPICAL

6:00 pm doors

/

6:30 pm film

Adapted from the graphic novel memoir by ColombianEcuadorian cartoonist Powerpaola, Virus Tropical is a thoughtful and deeply affecting coming-of-age story that begins on the night Paola is conceived – in a stylized but anatomically complete sequence that sets the tone for the film’s matter-of-fact exploration of sexuality and family – and ends with her striking out on her own as a young adult. Over the intervening years we accompany Paola, the youngest of three daughters raised by a mostly single mom, as she gropes and fumbles her way through friendships, new schools, clunky romances, and various domestic dramas. Scrappy DIY black and white animation and lo-fi Latin-indie score lend a lovingly idiosyncratic charm to a film that brings forth a unique and utterly refreshing girl’s POV perspective. Dir. Santiago Caicedo & Powerpaola / 2017 / Colombia / 96 min

The otherworldly veil lifts one day as Mehitable flees home and attempts to create a new life alongside humanity. Booger serves as a queer supernatural coming-of-age story, for anyone who has felt like an Other, an outcast, or uncomfortable in their own skin. Dir. Jonah Barrett / 2018 / US / 90 min Post-film Q&A with Booger director Jonah Barrett, Absent director Isabella Cuevas Pierson, filmmaker/moderator Rachel Millena Saul, and composer Christian Carpenter.

THIS MOUNTAIN LIFE

6:00 pm doors

The awe that mountainous landscapes evoke is universal. Yet in a province that is 75% mountains, most of us seldom venture into true wilderness. Living amongst us is a special breed of people. They are undefined by age, gender, profession or background, but for them, the draw of the mountains is so strong that their lives must revolve around it. A motherdaughter team attempting a six month, self supported journey through a mountain wilderness; the gripping story an avalanche burial; a group of nuns who inhabit a mountain retreat to be closer to God; an impassioned alpinist; a focused snow artist; a couple who has been living off grid in the mountains for nearly 50 years. Shot in cinematic detail, This Mountain Life is a riveting examination of human passion set high in the peaks of British Columbia. Dir. Grant Baldwin / 2018 / CA / 77 min

let your curiosity guide you.

OLY ARTS

The Leading Guide to Arts and Culture in the South Sound.

at Octapas Café / Free admission What is a film producer? And why would a production team need one? Those are questions answered in the workshop, WTF is a Producer, with local producers Jason Connelly, J. Arthur Sunday, Sylas Dall, and Bry Troyer. Learn what a producer is, does, and doesn’t do. Also learn about the different types of producers (like executive producers, line producers, co-producers, associate producers, etc.), or why “producer types” often don’t mean anything. We also look forward to learning from you.

4:00 pm discussion

let your curiosity guide you.

Never one to compromise on her vision, Maya kept her camera rolling throughout. MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. provides unparalleled, intimate access to the artist in her battles with the music industry and mainstream media as her success and fame explodes, becoming one of the most recognizable, outspoken and provocative voices in music today. One Cut of the Dead opens in a run-down, abandoned warehouse where a film crew are making a zombie film. Yet, this is no ordinary warehouse. It’s been said that it’s the site of where military experiments took place. Out of nowhere, real zombies arrive and terrorize the crew. This may sound like a familiar horror film, but One Cut of the Dead is something completely different. Beginning with a non-stop, one-take 37 minute shot, the film then completely switches direction. Go in without researching any further, and we’ll see you at midnight. Dir. Shinichiro Ueda / 2017 / Japan / 96 min SHORT NARRATIVE FILM: ATTACK OF THE POTATO CLOCK A monstrous potato emerges from the depths of a kitchen to wreak havoc and seek revenge on the chefs who have done the vegetable wrong. 8:30 pm film

The countryside isn’t always as calm and peaceful as it’s made out to be, and the animals on this farm are particularly agitated: a fox who mothers a family of chicks, a rabbit who plays the stork, and a duck who wants to be Santa Claus. If you think life in the country is a walk in the park, think again. Directors Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert adapt Renner’s own acclaimed graphic novel into a delirious, delightful triptych of interlocking stories, with a pacing and visual spontaneity that harkens back to classic Looney Tunes shorts and slapstick tworeelers. But underneath the gags (and there are plenty of them), the three stories offer a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of family and the anxieties of modern life. Dir. Benjamin Renner & Patrick Imbert / 2017 / France (English Dub) / 80 min

Free admission. Cultivating communities through cultural space is perhaps the most effective method of invested, interested engagement. Through its preservation and promotion, you expose people to new opportunities for exploration, as well as bringing together vastly different types with one shared interest; something that’s worth nurturing; a thriving arts community and raises the importance of arts, history, and cultural. The evening will combine storytelling, images, and testimonials that will help to create dialogue, plans, and incite action and thoughtful discussion on the need to preserve the artistic and cultural places in our community. Meet and hear stories from community members who have dedicated their lives to creating and preserving these places.

“Singing Our Way to Freedom” is a vibrant, multilayered look at the life of Chicano musician, composer and community activist, Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez. The film chronicles Chunky’s life from his humble beginnings as a farmworker in Blythe, California to receiving one of the nation’s highest musical honors at the Library of Congress in Washington DC in 2013. As a young man in the 1960s, Chunky joined the picket lines in the California fields with Cesar Chavez, demanding justice and better wages for farmworkers. Early on, he discovered that the music he created could be a powerful weapon in creating social change and overcoming prejudice and racism. Dir. BOOM: A FILM ABOUT THE SONICS

8:00 pm doors

‘Boom’ tells the untold story of one of rock ‘n’ roll’s wildest and most influential bands, The Sonics. For the first time ever, all five original members of the band tell the true story of how it all went down, beginning to end. ‘Boom’ takes a deep dive, exploring how a relatively unknown band from the Pacific Northwest became a worldwide phenomenon 50-years after their heyday, and in doing so, shaped music for decades to come (whether it was apparent at the time or not). Featuring interviews with homegrown heroes and breakthrough artists alike, Pearl Jam, The Sex Pistols, Heart, Mudhoney, and many, many more. Dir. Jordan Albertsen / 2018 / US / 84 min
