PRESIDENT’S MEMO

Dear Fellow Olympians, The 2016 Olympics were just a little more fun to watch with four of our fellow members competing on the international stage.

OC world-class athlete swimmers Nathan Adrian, Tony Ervin and Tom Shields earned a combined seven medals in Rio. Runner Shannon Rowbury placed fourth in the women’s 1500 meter race. You can read a recap of their accomplishments on page 12. Congratulations to all of these amazing athletes!

In our August meeting, the Board received the 2017–19 Board of Directors Nominees: Lloyd Aubry, Jr., Alan Lefkof, John McNulty and Edward Reidy. I want to thank the Nominating Committee, chaired by Dennis Herrera, and its members: Mark Campana, Joan Schriger, Ed Silicani, Frank Rollo and Mike Strain. The nominees will be submitted by proxy vote for approval at the Club’s Annual Meeting Nov. 2.

I also want to recognize a few of our members who played important roles at the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open Championship in CordeValle.

Led by Carol Kaufman, who served as General Chair of the Open, several members were on the Chairman’s Executive Council, assisting in planning during the two and a half years leading up to the Championship: Dan Dillon, Mark Avelar, Mike Cinelli, John Abendroth, Kevin O’Brien, Kay Cockerill and Danny Dann. Avelar and Erika Corradi also served as co-chairs of Corporate Hospitality during the event. This continues a great tradition of Olympic Club involvement in another USGA event during its first appearance in Northern California. We look forward to continuing this relationship with the USGA as we host the U.S. Women's Championship in 2021.

Congratulations are also in order for our women’s field hockey team, who won their first East Coast tournament: the 4Goals Cup. This was a big win for a team that began less than two years ago. I am sure this is just the beginning for this competitive team.

Later this month, we are honoring the 2016 Hall of Fame inductees: William (Bill) Callan, contributor; Michael Allen, golf; Albert White, diving; George Schroth, water polo; and the 1925 and 1928 football teams.

Congratulations to each of our inductees and their families. I want to thank the Hall of Fame Committee, especially the Chair, Bert Keane and staff members Jessica Smith and Gary Crook, for all their work continuing this time-honored tradition.

Continuing with our congratulations and recognition theme, we also tip our hats to our very own General Manager, Pat Finlen. The Club was awarded the 2016 Club of Excellence Award, which is only given to clubs whose general managers have won the highest achievement award in the private club industry. The award recognizes the partnership between the Board and Management team working together.

Congratulations, Pat and your team, and thank you to my fellow and past directors for your dedication and service to the Club.

In this issue, you will notice a new spin on one of our long-standing traditions: Father/Daughter Nights. On Nov. 11, Dads & Debutantes will be held at City Clubhouse.

This event will be for fathers and daughters 18 and up. As a father of four daughters, this allows one to continue these memorable events with our girls. I hope you can take advantage of this opportunity, assuming your daughters have not moved or away at college. I just spent a weekend visiting our two daughters who both live in New York.

We talked about the many Father/Daughter dances we have attended. Why couldn’t they have just stayed our little princesses forever?!

During this visit, we took the opportunity to see a Broadway play. No, we were not lucky enough to secure tickets to Hamilton — remember, I have five children and I am working to pay a mortgage, tuition and taxes so Hamilton was not in the budget.

We did get tickets to see the musical Waitress.

I mention this to highlight an opportunity available to each and every one of our members — Theater Night. If you have not taken advantage of these special evenings, you are missing out. You don’t have to go to New York to catch a Broadway show. They are coming to you, with terrific theater seats packaged with an amazing dinner at the Club. Take it from me, this is one of the best deals at the Club.

hree-straight national titles. Fourteen seasons of Golden Gate Women’s Soccer League titles.

The names on the roster of The Olympic Club women’s soccer team may vary from season to season, but the winning culture is what fuels their continued success. This program is not simply a static list of all-stars but a tightly-woven troop of like-minded,

driven athletes. They show up for each other and enjoy playing to win together.

This July, they bested some of the toughest competition around the country to earn their third National Championship trophy at the United States Adult Soccer Association’s Adult Soccer Fest in Denver, Colo. The Adult Soccer Fest is the largest sanctioned

The OC’s roster in Denver featured only six players who have played in all three title campaigns and also included five players who were competing in their first Nationals.

How do they maintain their winning ways at this elite level while faces change? They encourage a culture of excellence.

The women’s soccer program, like others here at the OC, has often utilized their own alma maters as natural recruiting sources.

The Olympic Club consistently recruits top talent from around the country, many of which come from the same schools as the U.S. National team itself.

“Our record on the field helps draw these players to our team initially, but I believe that the foundation of our program and the history of The Olympic Club is what sets us apart from our competitors,” explained Kelley Birch, a midfielder who has played on two of the National Championship teams and served as co-captain for this year’s squad.

Talent aside, the team’s players and their coach believe the true success of the program lies in the strength of the team’s culture, not individuals. "The core of what we have here as a team — the trophies, medals and banners would mean nothing if there wasn't a foundation of community, selflessness and love underpinning everything we do,” said J.T. Hanley, head coach. “Win or lose, this never changes."

Those intangibles are crucial elements of the team’s recruitment process. “Commissioners and players look for individuals who are not only good, but share in the team’s common values, like humility, hard work, competitiveness and fun,” explained Danielle Brunache, a defender who has played on all three National Championship teams and served as co-captain

on two. “Those qualities benefit our team on the field and our Club off — our girls are everywhere!”

The team’s depth of talent and experience, as well as their commitment to its core values has allowed them to find success at the highest level, no matter who dons the Winged O.

Competitiveness, a trait these women possess in spades, is a particularly important team pillar, so it came as no surprise when they jumped at the opportunity to compete at Nationals and face top caliber teams four years ago. After losing in their first trip to Nationals, they decided on their common goal: winning a national title.

“We lost in the semifinals of our first trip to Nationals in Kansas City in 2013 and that trip proved to be a learning experience for our team,” said Birch. “We realized what it would take for us to capture a National Championship. From the moment our final game ended in KC, we treated every practice and local match as training for next year’s National quest. We were determined to bring home a trophy to The Olympic Club.”

The team dedicated themselves to getting prepared. Birch recounts their path to the three peat: “We traveled with a strong squad to Florida in 2014 and were prepared both physically and mentally for any type of opponent. Our hard work paid off and we came home with the trophy. After capturing our first National title in 2014, we knew we had a target on our back. However, our team is comprised of highly-competitive women that never want to settle for second best.

While you may have only seen Michael Phelps, Ryan Held, Caeleb Dressell and Nathan Adrian on the podium proudly wearing the gold medals they earned for their performances in the men’s 4x100 meter freestyle relay, the team runs much deeper. Likewise, the same is true for the team of Phelps, Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller and Adrian that went on to earn gold for their 4x100m medley relay.

The full relay squads included two more Olympic Club members in Anthony Ervin and Tom Shields, who swam in the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay preliminaries respectively. All three, Adrian, Ervin and Shields earned gold medals as part of these historymaking United States teams.

Adrian won his fifth Olympic medal as the anchor of that 4x100 freestyle team, along with Phelps, Held and Dressel. Adrian touched the wall first in 3 minutes, 9.92 seconds earning the U.S. the gold. The 100m freestyle winner in London 2012, Adrian further cemented his reputation for performing in the clutch, winning bronze in both the 100m and 50m freestyle individual races in Rio. To complete his busy race schedule, he went on to win gold as the anchor of the 4x100m medley team in the final event of the week. Adrian contributed to Phelps’ last race and setting an Olympic record.

Shields, too, won gold for his role in the early heats of this race, he combined with Dressel, Kevin Cordes and David Plummer.

If that last name sounds familiar, it is because David is the younger brother of Ryan Plummer, an OC swim coach.

All three Olympians played their own part in Phelps’ historical road to his 18th and finally 23rd medals in Rio.

Two more of the Club’s current swimming coaches, Chris Rogers and Tom Dowley, swam with Adrian and Shields at University of California Berkeley, and know what it takes to get to this level of competition, as well as grasp the amount of forethought that goes into the final relay team decisions.

“There is a great deal of strategy that goes into the early heats to qualify for the finals in the relay events. Teams decide to rest their ‘big guns’ for the finals, utilizing the depth of talent they have to earn their spot in the final,” said Dowley.

Competing in his fourth Olympic games, Ervin also earned a gold medal in the 50m freestyle race - the same event he earned his first gold medal for in 2000 in Sydney. The 35-year-old finished the sprint in 21:40 to win a close race. France’s Florent Manaudou touched the wall just after Ervin with a time of 21:41. Adrian joined him on the podium, taking bronze with a time of 21:49.

Ervin’s time was more than half a second faster than his gold medal-winning time in 2000. With his win, he also tied the record for longest medal span in swimming (16 years).

Now the oldest man to swim for the U.S. at the Olympics in more than a century, he is also the oldest Olympic swimmer to ever win an individual event.

ROWBURY FINISHES FOURTH IN THIRD OLYMPIC BID Another OC athlete, track and field star Shannon Rowbury made her third-consecutive Olympic final in the women’s 1500m. After placing second and third respectively in the early heat and semifinal, Rowbury earned a fourth place finish in the final. 

runch. There are a plethora of options for brunch here in San Francisco. On Sundays at Lakeside, The Olympic Club offers one of the best brunch buffets — and also one of the best values — in town.

Every week, Executive Chef Marc Passetti and his crew produce an impressive spread. And, each one comes with a mimosa or orange juice.

The menu rotates every three weeks, but they change it up in small ways often. “We try to keep the staples like eggs Benedict, salmon, potatoes, fruit, pastries and such, but change parts of it, like switching from French toast to blueberry pancakes,” Passetti explained. “The made-to-order omelettes are always a popular attraction. We offer fresh vegetables and protein options and they are made there on the spot to your liking.”

With the vast amount of space available at Lakeside, there is always a spot open.

“It’s one of the best brunch options I’ve found here and I like that we can always get in. That’s a big plus here in the City,” said Adrian Driscoll, a long-time member who often comes down for brunch. His wife, Donna, appreciates the variety. “I love that there are healthy options available as well, so I don’t have to eat a heavy meal but still have plenty to choose from each time,” she said.

Passetti keeps that in mind when he sets the menu, but also acknowledges it is a good time to indulge as well. “We try to mix in some healthy options for those who are conscious of that, but ultimately Sunday Brunch is a good excuse to have a cheat day, too!”

What goes into preparing these fantastic spreads each week?

Depending on the number of reservations, it usually takes from five to eight kitchen staff about eight hours each to get it table ready by 10am.

They go through about 20 to 30 pounds of eggs each week, to make both the eggs Benedict and stock the made-to-order omelette station. The prepared salads, ranging from beets and goat cheese to pasta selections weigh in at about 30 to 40 pounds each week and mirror the options offered at the dinner buffet.

For such an early hour, there are a surprising number of smiles among the staff in the kitchen. Salvador Medina has been working there for more than 40 years and Jose Aguirre for 35, while Edith Castorena has been preparing the delightful homemade desserts for 32 years. he title is ours again. Chad LaTourette's 'Olympic Club A' outdueled George Tidmarsh's 'Tahoe Eleven Milers' to win this year's Trans Tahoe Relay, bringing the open championship home for the first time in 15 years.

Meanwhile, Katie Kastes' 'Road to Rio Masters' repeated as the fastest women's team, a comfortable 2:30 minutes ahead of their nearest rival, and Douwe Yntema's six defended their men's 114 age-grade crown while finishing a robust third overall.

The last time OC won top honors, in 2001, less than 100 teams entered the Relay.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Sierra Nevada race is now two-and-a-half times the size and probably America's most prestigious open-water relay competition. Twice in a row, the Winged O has produced three of the top seven squads.

seized the initiative on Bryan Offutt's leg 3, pulling to within 30 yards — approximately 20 seconds back.

After Jason Dunford edged closer, the contest turned on leg 5, when the Eleven Milers took a more northerly line while the Olympians held steady, to the south. Simultaneously, Allison Arnold started marginally behind and finished with a visible lead, having logged a particularly good last 15 minutes.

There was yet work to do. Round 2 OC's 2015 runners-up had moved to within 10 yards of the Eleven Milers before trailing off to lose by 200 or so. Though 2016's Eleven Milers had taken the early edge.

OC held its nerve. Clark Burckle's anchoring 30 minutes sent LaTourette squarely in front, and so to Colin Babcock's tense stretch run past Dollar Point, which timed out but 20 yards from the turn buoy.

Offutt, entering the water with the timing chip secure, closed out the 11-mile race 75 yards clear of pursuit.

Like the A team, which returned LaTourette, Babcock and Offutt from the year-ago lineup, Rio Masters featured three new swimmers, with Christine Olson, Elyssa Pedote and Anna Senko joining Katie McGraw, Kathryn Murphy and Kastes. 2016's women's 114 champs crossed a convincing 10 minutes ahead of the wave's next fastest, and showed off their depth in besting Katie Glenn's Wiki Wiki Wahine, which topped OC for 2014's honors.

FIRST IRISH TEAM COMPLETES TRANS TAHOE RELAY

Tahoe newcomers may fret over water temperature or altitude, but rarely buoyancy.

Cue Ireland’s Wexford Masters Openwater Swim Club. Two hours south of Dublin, Wexford mostly train in the chilly Irish Sea, so Lake Tahoe is right in line with home base.

“The water was perfect, and as clear as I have ever seen,” observed Peter Bolger, captain of Wexford’s Trans Tahoe Relay team, which finished the 2016 contest in 6:08.

And after windswells rose to slow the field and stop more than a dozen teams from finishing? “It’s nice not to have the salt in your mouth,” Bolger noted. “[But] With no buoyancy to hold you up, you had to work so much harder which of course requires oxygen, a commodity in scarce supply.” a premium on consistency as more swimmers now race another leg.

Yntema's 114 crew was the only OC team to improve upon last year's time — by some eight minutes to 3:36 — and, by result, moved up four places in the overall standings. Just 10 teams, less than half the normal number, beat the 4-hour mark, the conventional benchmark for speedy teams.

Four more OC entrants hit Tahoe's podium, including Nolan Koon's runnerup men's 114, Quinn Fitzgerald's runnerup men's 180, Christine Chessen's runnerup women's 300 and Todd Arris' third place men's 240. In perhaps the toughest age grade, Haley Read's women's 114 finished 21st overall but fourth in category.

239 teams entered the 40th annual competition, with 209 finishing. After a sunny, placid morning in somewhat coolerthan-usual waters, noontime winds stormed the Sand Harbor-to-Skylandia Beach course, eventually prompting withdrawals.

Among the finishers were The Olympic Club's special guests, the Wexford Masters Openwater Swimming Club, competing as the Irish Rovers (see sidebar). 

Trans Tahoe’s first overseas team since Tattersall’s of Sydney, Australia, in 2012, Wexford are unofficially the first Irish team ever to complete the 11-mile course.

Bolger and 10 compadres came over to California to swim the Catalina Channel.

Despite a torrid three-hour opening that saw the six-person squad cover less than two of the 20-mile course, Wexford ended up crossing in just under 12 hours.

In the past five years, the club has completed the English Channel, the oftenunderestimated North Channel from Northern Ireland to Scotland, and now Catalina — three of the famed 'Ocean's Seven'.

While planning for Catalina, Wexford thought another event would round out the trip. Contacting race director Paul Carter, they decided the Trans Tahoe Relay, in which swimmers exchange after 30-minute legs, rather than the standard hourlong intervals, would be a pleasant coda.

“We had all our focus on the Catalina swim and really had no idea what we had let ourselves in for at Lake Tahoe,” Bolger said. “To see all those boats lining up ... on such a beautiful morning with the backdrop of such breathtaking scenery was a sight none of us will ever forget.”

After the race, the tourists came down to San Francisco for a few days of sightseeing, including a light swim in the Natatorium and an Article III breakfast with several of the Rough Water team.

“All of us will cherish our memories of that swim. The Catalina Channel was amazing but Lake Tahoe and The Olympic Club made this an absolutely incredible journey,” Bolger emailed from home. 

SUPPORTING YOUTH ATHLETES: HOW DOES THE FOUNDATION CHOOSE PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT

I joined the Board of Directors of The Olympic Club Foundation in 2014 after attending the Foundation’s 8th Ultimate Wine Dinner & Auction. In addition to having a fantastic time, I was impressed by the work they were doing and surprised that I knew so little about them.

Mike Carroll, an emeritus director of the Foundation, encouraged me to join the OCF Grants Committee to be part of the mission.

This involved vetting organizations that have applied for funds and included visiting the organizations, observing the kids and meeting the coaches and staff. I was very excited to do this as I had coached tennis from high school through my senior year at Berkeley and always loved working with kids.

In my first year on the Committee, I was asked to review Oakland Lacrosse Club and Trips for Kids. Those site visits were exhilarating and made me understand what Mike was talking about. I could see how the kids’ activities were organized and how our Foundation funds would be used to support their endeavors.

This year, I had the pleasure of seeing the Hercules Running Rebels, a talented and successful group of track athletes, ages 6–17.

The Running Rebels Track & Field Club seeks to develop well-rounded young men and women not only prepared to succeed on the track but also in life. Their mission is to inspire their athletes to reach their full potential by developing character, strength, speed, endurance, self-esteem, accountability, self-discipline and perseverance. Their USATF level I certified coaching staff believes in nurturing the whole athlete using nutrition, physical fitness, discipline and fun activities to keep them engaged. With over 20 years of

experience in the sport, the coaches continue to educate themselves so that the program continues to evolve and progress with their growing athletes.

Coach James Moore and Fundraising Director Anna Armstrong hosted me at Hercules High School on a relatively hot day on June 27. Thankfully, the weather was a bit cooler as a heat wave brought temperatures of 100+ degrees the previous week. I couldn’t imagine the kids practicing in that heat. Yet, they practice 2–3 days per week the entire summer. I met a few of the parents, an assistant coach and about 20 students that day. Coach had them warming up with casual 50-yard ‘strides,’ working their way up to 100-yard dashes. You could see some amazingly polished form on several of the kids, even some of the adorable smaller 7-8-year-old girls.

I was so impressed with them, I recommended we support their efforts with a grant.

As of this writing in early August, the Hercules Running Rebels 7-8-year-old girls 4 x 100 relay team finished fourth in the finals at the USATF National Junior Olympics Track & Field Championships, earning All American

honors and now ranking fourth in the nation.

Perhaps their most impressive performance of the Championship came in a qualifying race where the girls came in first — within .23 seconds of the current national record for their event — and beat the other teams by almost 50 yards in a blowout victory!

The video of their race is really something to see — you can see it on the Foundation’s Facebook page. Congratulations to Coach Moore, his staff and the Hercules Running Rebels. It is so heartwarming to realize that they will be able to continue their success in part because of the support they received from The Olympic Club Foundation. It’s an honor to be involved with such a super group of coaches and athletes and pure joy to watch them thrive.

In brief, these three examples exemplify the Olympic Club Foundation’s commitment to the development of young people through their participation in sports, overcoming the barriers too often imposed by society and giving them the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and become contributing members of our community. 

A feature from the History & Archives Committee giving Olympians a look at the way we were.

In the 1880s, the Club created two classifications of young members: Juniors (16–21 years) and Juveniles (8–15 years). The Olympian argued in October 1913 that these classes were “created for the purpose of affording the young friends of members of The Olympic Club an opportunity of improving themselves physically.” Younger members had restricted hours of access, but were offered classes instructed by the

finest coaches of Olympia. Junior members participated in after school programs, exhibitions and field days — most of which featured boxing, one of the long-standing, high-profile sports at the Club.

As we approach the OC Foundation's resurgence of Fight Night, here are a few photos of junior boxers through the years:

FALL INTO WELLNESS — CLEANSING AND DETOXING We had a great Golf Wellness Bootcamp at Lakeside this summer. Wish you all could have been there! We learned about the importance of integrating good nutrition, proper exercise techniques, along with the benefits of relaxation and positive social connections. I want to extend my thanks to Executive Chef Marc Passetti who created a beautiful display of wellness-friendly cuisine. A big thank you to Ava Chin for coordinating and to Nicole McGirr for providing members with physical movements to get golf ready. A very special thanks to our Olympians who participated — YOU made it great!

The nutrition element of our sessions focused on proper fueling for golf and other athletic activities, including pre- and post-game food suggestions for optimum performance. We also discussed the importance of sustainable, local and organic foods for members’ health and for the health of our eco-system and planet and cleansing. For those who were unable to attend our sessions, here’s a summary of the How To primer about cleansing.

The goal of a cleansing day is detoxification, which lends itself to ridding the body of toxins from the many daily stressors we face which impact the body and mind. Toxins could include: noise, fear, stressful social connections, negative relationships, too little sleep. Also, don’t forget the value of exercise. Those irritating toxins can cause chronic inflammation if

we don’t find methods to subdue their damage.

Planned days of rest and recovery are a vital part of your overall well being so they should be part of your personal program. WELLNESS TRAIL LEADS TO THE OC As proposed by the Board in 2015, the Club’s new Wellness Center on 2M is coming together. Though the term “wellness” has a broad spectrum of possible implementations, the new Center will, at the start, be focused on better delivery of what we have considered the core of the fitness area since the late 1980s: day-to-day analysis of basic functional movements used in your daily life and the nutritional intake component that we all have at least three swings at every day.

These will be the basis of the Center, along with the Athletic Committee’s long-sought after presence of an athletic trainer/ physical therapist to give easy access to injury triage for our athletes. We are relocating the Pilates equipment to a semi-private area, more conducive to the implementation of this technique. Pilates is an integral part of injury rehab, as well as sustaining athletic careers.

All services previously hosted on 2M will be retained in the Club to better serve all members.

Late July featured one those “only at The Olympic Club” moments: there were hundreds of OC athletes competing across the country from Lake Tahoe to Denver to Las Vegas to Irvine, Ca. to Providence, R.I. Starting out closest to home, the 40th Trans Tahoe Relay began under ideal conditions at 6am with a glassy, flat Lake. But around noon, the winds from the south picked up to nearly 30 knots, pushing boats and swimmers on more northerly routes

than normal. Everyone finished the day in good shape and The Olympic Club team won for the first time in a few years. You can read the recap on page 17.

Just down the road from the finish, the Club’s men’s lacrosse team was back in action at the Tahoe Lacrosse tournament. In the first tournament since winning the State Club Lacrosse Championship, the Open team made it to the finals, but then lost. The Club’s first Masters entry won their Division. The Club’s Open Division women’s team had the same fate as the men’s Open team, getting to the finals and losing.

Over in Las Vegas, more than 500 teams participated in the huge AAU Basketball Tournament.

The Club had eight teams competing against the best age group teams in the country. Coach Manny Nodar and his 7th grade girls team won the national title in their division. See page 34 for a quick recap of their win.

That weekend in Denver, the Club’s top women’s soccer team won the National Adult Soccer Fest title. FIELD HOCKEY WINS 4GOALS CUP The women’s field hockey team earned a first place finish in the 4Goals Cup at Brown University on July 31. After eight games in two days, the team finished with a 5–0–3 record and a first place finish. 4Goals is the premiere tournament for post-collegiate competition in the U.S. and more than 100 teams of various age groups participated.

New member Liz Robinson lead the scoring tally and had several offensive shining moments, including scoring the winning goal to secure a 2–1 result against the elite team from club Northeast in the championship game.

The team wound down their season with games against local Bay Area collegiate teams in August (Stanford, Berkeley and Pacific).

They'll pick up again in early spring 2017 with entrance into several local tournaments and leagues before heading back to CalCup in May and 4Goals again in July.

"It's exciting to see our team play so strongly and achieve this type of finish just 15 months into our existence,” said Savannah DeVarney, founder and commissioner of the squad. “I always knew these women were exceptional and capable of great performances together, but it's exciting to see it happening so early in our career."

The 4Goals organization is developing a broader 4Goals Cup Series, a national-league-like structure with multiple tournaments throughout a year. The Olympic Cup team aims to continue competing with 4Goals in their cups and series and is considering attendance at their Las Vegas tournament in December. 

The team has put in many training hours together through the spring and summer under coach Kevin Barber's leadership.

Adam Hinshaw outstripped Chad LaTourette to win the Santa Cruz mile, claiming The Olympic Club's first title at the iconic open-water venue since 1997.

Haley Read finished third among women, joining Quinn Fitzgerald, Tom McCarty, Hinshaw and LaTourette as age-grade winners. Simultaneously, Christine Hughes and Erika Hanson along with Read swept the women's 25–29 category.

With another three runner-up finishes and two more thirds among OC's 19 scoring swims, Rough Water unofficially added 306 points to its league-leading total, almost double its 2015 showing at the sprint event.

As usual, Santa Cruz led the team scoring, ringing up 860 to climb past Pleasanton's Tri Valley, Walnut Creek and Oakland's Temescal into third place and within sight of Davis. Many of the

hosts' points came from Sunday's two-mile competition.

Joe Marenda was OC's sole twomile competitior, posting a fourthplace finish.

Following an unusually warm, sunny week, Saturday's conditions were excellent: the water temperature matched Tahoe, seemingly helped by the sun's breaking through just before the start. Modest southerly waves were easy to punch through on the way out and around the pier, and nudged racers on the way back to the beach.

Debuting in 1973, Santa Cruz is about three years older than the Trans Tahoe Relay. There was no team competition back when The Olympic Club's Dan Veatch captured the 1997 crown. As with this year's 1–2 finish, ironically, OC's Mike Keck was that year's runnerup. 

Whether it is basic actions like sitting or walking, the daily demands of work and home, or your recreational activities — from painting or gardening to running or dance — Feldenkrais offers enjoyable and effective ways to improve how you move.

This is a class that was created by a structural engineer in the 1940s named Moshi Feldenkrais. He used the principles of engineering and applied them to the human body so that humans could learn how body mechanics can function optimally with less chance of injury. So, it is basically about retro-fitting the human body.

The classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30–10:30am in the third floor Fitness Studio at City Clubhouse. This is a six-week trial to determine if this is a class that should be added to the schedule starting Oct. 4 and ending Nov. 10.

just juniors AAU SUMMER SEASON ENDS WITH BIG WIN FOR 7TH GRADE GIRLS At the AAU Basketball Tournament held in Las Vegas in mid-July, the Club had eight teams compete against the best age group teams in the country. Coach Manny Nodar and his seventh grade girls’ team won the national title in their division. The junior tournament brings in more than 500 teams.

The players on the team are: Elise Agi, Dominique Cabading, Ava Grey, Alyanna Hughes, Payton King, Anabel Schneiberg, Claire Untalan and Lily Zanze.

The path to their national AAU title played out like this: ff July 14: OC vs. Central Washington Select 44–35 ff July 15: Utah Flash Elite 36–33, Eclipse 42–38 ff July 16: CBC Select 22–16 ff July 17: final against Eclipse 49–36 The fourth/fifth grade boys went 3–3, the sixth and seventh grade boys did the same. The fourth grade girls went 1–1 in their first trip to Nationals and the second seventh grade girls’ team went 2–3. The eighth grade girls’ team went 1–4.

GOLF REPORT OC HOSTS TRANSMISS AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP The Olympic Club hosted the 113th Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship July 11–14. The field was one of the strongest in TransMiss Championship history. Twentytwo of the top 200 players in the World Amateur Golf Rankings were in the field, including World No. 1 Maverick McNealy, the 2015 NCAA National Player of the Year.

“As a supporter of amateur athletics, The Olympic Club was proud to host the Trans-Miss,” said Will Hutter, director of Golf.

Junior golfer Isiah Salinda made the cut and shot 71, 74, 78 and 73, but it wasn’t enough to crack the top 20 and catch up to winner Will Zalatoris. 

2016 WGN TEAM CUP CHAMPIONS: AZEVEDO & MCKEEGAN

Overcast skies and a cool wind blowing over the Ocean Course on Saturday, Aug. 6 set the stage for the second day of competition in the WGN Team Cup Championship and Consolation Flight and matches.

In the Championship Semifinal, Lisa Mizono and Brigitta Bloyer met up with tough competition from the team of Lesley Berger and Malia Lyle. Berger and Lyle executed shot after shot and putt after putt to keep Mizono and Bloyer from getting ahead in the match. Berger and Lyle kept their foot on the pedal to finish 2 up and move on to the Final.

In the other Championship Semifinal, Barbara Azevedo and Mary McKeegan faced a tough match against Pixie O’Neill and

Amy Lee, moving on only after winning a 19th hole. In the Final Championship match, Azevedo and McKeegan overpowered Berger and Lyle to pull ahead 7 and 6 to win the Team Cup. In the Consolation Flight, Miranda Lin and Lisa Ramsey-Siotto played 18 holes head to head with the intrepid Marianne Boyce, who completed without her injured partner. To settle the dead heat, a coin was tossed to name the winner. Lin and Ramsey-Siotto won the toss to continue on in the afternoon Finals match against Nance McGee and Betsy Coover.

GOLF REPORT MURPHY AND JEW WIN 2016 JIM LUCIUS TOURNAMENT

The Lucius Shootout is an annual event that helps the Club and its members memorialize a great friend. Each year, pictures of Jim Lucius throughout his golfing life adorn the first tee and banquet areas; and while the fashion in those pictures changes from 1950s cool to the schizophrenic sweaters of the 1980s, Jim’s smile is warm and beaming in each of them.

Flight 4. The same was true in Flight 5, where Steve Barrulich and Carl Goldstone increased what was a small overnight lead to finish 5.5 points better than the rest.

In Flight 1, Joe Newman and Jason Jeung led by three points after day one and held on for the win. Mike Ahern and Kevin Wolf won Flight 2 by racing out to a five-point lead after day one and then maintaining the lead. Tim Gallagher and Anthony Gardner were in a dog fight after day one, but managed to extend their small lead on day two to finish atop Flight 3.

HEY CULLIGAN MAN! ONE NOTABLE OLYMPIAN SENIOR Tom Culligan is a loyal SGA member and now a super senior who still posts a 5 handicap.

He’s loved the game of golf for 66 years, thanks to his Dad who was a member at Peninsula Country Club. Tom still works at his game and the passion for golf is still there.

The 1972 U.S. Amateur, held at Wilmington CC (Delaware), a DuPont course, was medal play in those days and the top six finishers were invited to play win the Masters. Tom finished sixth and was off to Augusta.

EPIPHENOMENALISM It was probably not a good idea to ask a Philosophy major to write about golf in the first place, but the editors surely thought that I would be able to keep my disciplines separate. Unfortunately, everything eventually intersects.

For centuries, philosophers have wrestled with the question whether our minds exist separately from our brains, and even modern science and MRI machines have not been able to answer the puzzle definitively.

Substance Dualism, Property Dualism, Downward vs. NonReductive Causation all struggle with the problem of, “How can thoughts produce action?”

So, in a nutshell, here is the question — What is going on when you raise your arm to shade your eyes on a sunny day? Did the neurons in your eyes reacting to the light send a message that was decoded by your mind, and in response did your mind then consciously send a message to the neurons in your arm muscles?

Or, could it have been that your eyes sent the message directly to your arm, and your mind was only a passive observer? This is essentially the suggestion made

by Thomas Henry Huxley in his treatise on Epiphenomenalism and later commentary by Keith Campbell and David Chalmers.

Some recent neurophysiological data might also support the claim. Studies have shown that the electrical activity in the brain related to voluntary actions has

been recorded up to two seconds before the subject is aware of making a decision to perform an action (Bereitshaftspotential).

Granted, not all of our actions seem simply reflexive. The decision to select a particular Merlot, or ask a young lady to dance might seem mindful, but can we truly be sure of that if we cannot actually explain the mechanics of mindfulness (how thoughts create synaptic firings that produce action)?

If, indeed, the mind is not a causal agent, but has simply evolved as an observer, then this might explain why we are better at doing things when we aren’t thinking about and trying to control our actions. (We have previously written about the stumbling fall that will probably result if we

attempt to run downstairs while trying to think about where to put our feet.) Characterizing the mind as an annoying “back-seat driver” is maybe not very respectful and certainly might cause us to question the inordinate amount of time we spend filling it with information, but maybe we really did spend too much time in classrooms.

In contradiction, Donald Symons has argued that if the mind truly does not do anything, it would have been abandoned during our long evolutionary journey, however, I submit that we still have tail bones also.

So, it might be worth a try. Simply point your feet where you want the ball to go and let your subconscious brain work things out with its neurons and your muscles.

In short, try getting your conscious moderator out of the way. 

GM’S REPORT

Dear Olympians, As the end of summer rapidly approaches, it also means the conclusion of our OC summer camps for juniors. In 2016, the Club was pleased to offer a variety of options for athletic instruction, including: All Sports, aquatics, basketball, golf, handball, squash, tennis and volleyball camps. When I visit City Clubhouse and Lakeside while they are being held, I can’t help but notice how happy our juniors are who attend the camps. I see how much they enjoy time with their friends, their chosen sport and how when they leave camp they are not just better at their sport, but also better Olympians both “on and off the court.” I would also like to acknowledge our entire coaching staff that contributes to the success of our OC summer camp junior program.

This summer also saw another National Championship for the women’s soccer team.

In Denver, they won four games to complete their third-consecutive title in the USASA Nationals. Congratulations to the entire team for winning again and making the Club proud. (See more on page 5.)

With the end of this summer we see the return of a longtime tradition at the Club: Fight Night. This year, The Olympic Club Foundation is the sponsor the event. President Brad Solso and his team of volunteers have put together a fantastic evening. The event sold out the day after registration opened and promises to offer a great time for those in attendance and provide welcome revenue to the Foundation to continue their mission of helping youths to participate in sports.

As baseball enters the final three months of the season and football begins, Article III will again have that electric buzz when those two sports are on at the same time.

Congratulations to our Chef de Cuisine in Article III, Jong Lee who has created a fabulous new menu. If you have not been there for a while, please take the time to visit and experience some of the new menu items introduced by Chef Jong.

At the Golf Shop, you may have noticed a different look among the OC merchandise being offered and how it is displayed. We are pleased to announce Jennifer Miranda, our new golf merchandiser, joined our staff a few months ago. Jennifer was a retail buyer for LaRinconada Country Club in Los Gatos and has contributed to the new look and new lines of clothing on display, most notably an expanded line of women’s golf apparel. Please stop by the Golf Shop on your next visit to Lakeside and introduce yourself, she is open to your suggestions.

The end of our fiscal year is approaching at the end of September. 2016 has been another good year for the Club. As we enter our new fiscal year in October, we will continue to look at opportunities to be more efficient while delivering the best possible member experience.
