There are extensive imaginative terrains encapsulated in this selection of collages, watercolours and acrylics by Robert Klippel, which range over several decades of his creation. Klippel first focused on drawing as an output beyond that of notations for sculptural ideas when he was living in Paris in the late 1940s. In doing so embarked on a path which resulted in an extraordinary body of work. In his great oeuvre of works on paper one can perceive the shape of Klippel’s successive investigations: early affinities with artists who were drawn to a profusion of forms (Miro, Klee, Arp, for example) were amplified by Klippel’s constructivist interest in space and interior structure from the 1950s, and subsequently by his increasingly intense exploration of chance and intuition. Yet in all works it is the unmistakable sensibility of Robert Klippel which is foregrounded. Dense or lyrical, complex or simplified, these drawings and collages reveal the ways in which Klippel worked with the generating ideas of his time - cubism, surrealism and constructivism – to create something which is outstandingly individual. Generally small in size yet monumental in scale, these works invite contemplation from close proximity, and like all of Klippel’s artworks they sustain us in ways which lie beyond the narrative or literary.
