Wellness Residence, New Construction

10,000 SF

Situated within the Shooting Star community at the foot of Jackson Hole Ski Resort, the 1.85-acre site naturally encourages a sense of both internal re昀氀ection and external engagement, boasting panoramic vistas of the Tetons to the west and intimate views of the surrounding woods and streams to the east. As the full-time residence for two busy executives and their growing family, the owners desired a home that would allow them to 昀椀nd moments of pause amid life’s daily tempo.

The Space Between

Inspired by the Japanese principle of “Ma” or “The Space Between,” the design revolves around a collection of internal view courtyards nestled within the predominantly stone structure, o昀昀ering secluded areas for contemplation and tranquility amidst the daily hustle. Intimate moments are contrasted by long views out to the Tetons, captured through the large, glass-enclosed living space. Additional design features include a playful slide connecting the children’s wing to the main level, private bedroom wings, and a dedicated meditation sanctuary (located in the silo above).

Historic Renovation, In昀椀ll Addition

85,900 SF

LocatedinFivePoints,Denver’shistoricculturaldistrict, theRossonianisaneighborhoodlegacywiththe ability to transform the future. What a privilege to be a part of a project sacred to locals and attractive to tourists alike. Historically, the Rossonian was a jazz club and hotel for African American musicians such as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald, welcomed to Denver as performers but shunned as inhabitants. Looking forward, the hotel renovation alongside the in昀椀ll addition seek to reestablish the Rossonian as the cornerstone of this diverse and adaptable neighborhood.

In昀椀ll Addition Process

The in昀椀ll project is designed to respect the character-de昀椀ning features of the Rossonian bymaintainingtheproportionsoftheopeningsanddatumlinesofthe昀氀oorlevels, window headers, and major architectural details.

From a 25-foot wide addition to a high-rise development, with each iteration the goal is always deference to the existing building. The new addition will be eight stories and include a jazz club in the basement, lobby on the ground 昀氀oor, hotel rooms on levels 2-8, and a fourth 昀氀oor restaurant.

Artist Studios, Guest Casita, Main Home Renovation 5,000 SF

There’s no shortage of untouched beauty in Todos Santos, making it an ideal location for our clients, a musician and painter, to locate their creative studios and guest casita. Already living on location parttime, their existing home consists of two separate patios that we consolidated into one elongated courtyard, terracing down from a new, monolithic entry to a pool, hot tub, and temazcal (a traditional Mexican sweat lodge). A short walk from the main residence leads to the couple’s studios, located on the ground level, with the casita above: three separate, interlocking volumes all oriented to views of the Paci昀椀c Ocean.

Project currently in Design Development. Work completed at Vera Iconica Architecture.

Where the Ocean Meets the Desert

Massing and materiality were inspired by the contrasting beauty of the place. Look one way and experience the presence of the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. Look the other, and you’re captured by the wild ocean and its untouched beaches. In between, the landscape is dry and dusty, a neutral backdrop for the pops of color that come from cacti in bloom and the abundance of bougainvillea.

22
Massing - rectilinear volumes, mass walls, sinuous extensions into the landscape. Materiality - rammed earth as an extension of the landscape, bold color against a neutral backdrop.

Courtyard entry reimagined: dripping in bougainvillea and complete with a hand-carved antique door and sky blue arched ceiling.
24
Rammed earth anchors the corner. Stairs are carved out of the mass and lead to the second-level casita. On the ground 昀氀oor: painting studio left, recording studio right, with casita above.

The Studios

The studios provide dedicated workspaces designed to accommodate the couple’s various creative projects.Inherartstudio,she’llenjoyseamlessindoor/outdoorconnectionwiththe昀氀exibilityofrollingher work tables onto either patio to work. Acoustics are the top concern for his recording studio. Rammed earth walls absorb sound and work to stop reverberation, perfect for musicians, and the casita above is set back for physical acoustic separation from the studio.

Architectural Elements

This project underwent several reviews with the design director of Daybreak. The design necessarily evolved, but the over-arching concepts remained the same:

Distinctive buildings with traditional form. Soft palette to highlight natural elements. Inject a bit of bold.
