With the sun shining down on the bleachers, DHS students filed outside as members of Student Council directed students to their class sections. Red and white streamers wrapped around the railings down below and music blasted through the speakers.

HOT SPOTS FOR LUNCH
DHS is in a prime spot There are many places to eat lunch within walking distance or a short drive, and with an open campus, many students go out to eat. Where do students and staff like to go?
Happy Pappy’s is a newer pizza place, just across the road from the high school. A prime spot for good pizza. Pappy’s runs a deal during lunch for two slices of pizza and a soda for seven dollars a great deal. Happy Pappy’s is sophomore Milo Martin’s favorite place to eat lunch Happy Pappy’s also supports the community by hiring students and providing food for local community events.
Subway isn’t super far away and has good food, says sophomore Benji Rice. Subway is about two blocks away, and another favorite to walk to serving great subs and sweet treats.
Another hot spot is Tom’s Deli. Tom’s is about five blocks away, and a little bit longer of a walk This is teacher Jessica Musch’s favorite place to go to lunch. Tom’s Deli specializes in sandwiches, hot and cold.

OPERATION: SAVE EMISSION!

We’re entering a Bike To School Week between the 22nd to the 26th, and everyone is encouraged to participate! Participating is either by biking, walking, or a carpool system (like the Trolley or the Bus) to get to school! The Green Team of DHS is officially hosting this small event in attempts to make Durango just a bit more cleaner and greener!
From Brett Wilson, the leader of Green Team and Spanish Teacher, has given a few words on what he exactly wants from green team, Bike to School Week, and his overall goals. He talks about how he would “like to see more people getting to school without using a motorized vehicle, but carpooling is fine” such as using a bus. He advocated for hoping that there would be so many people biking to school that more bike racks would need to be installed. Potentially even in the car parking lot, though for now he has see no significant increase of people actually biking to school during or after this week.

After school, rain or shine, hundreds of DHS athletes take to the fields, courts, and trails to practice in order to prepare for the myriad of tournaments, games, and meets across the fall season.
In order to be able to compete, unsung heroes – bus drivers –safely ferry students to and from their destinations, driving for hours, over mountain passes, and in any weather conditions imaginable. And it’s not just in the fall: drivers complete these journeys in the winter and spring as well
But this year, sports teams at DHS are having to get a little more creative The school district is experiencing a shortage of bus drivers, just “like many other school districts across Colorado and the nation,” according to a transportation update on the Durango School District website.
