Introduction Rationale

The contradiction of access and protection is one that defines the nature of the archive and is a concept that I challenged in my stage 5 thesis project.

This thesis set out to challenge the idea that the most important function of the archive is to act as a vault, protecting the material held within at the cost of allowing open access to that material. Instead, the stage 5 thesis proposed the archive as a facility that gives back to the city it resides in, celebrating the communities surrounding it and acting as an active cultural hub as opposed to a stagnant vault.

Through the design process in stage 5 I began to realise that there was more to this topic, and felt I had only been able to scratch the surface of it. I felt this was something I could take forward into the masters and uncover new insights on the workings of the archive.

The Masters research project aims to uncover more answers on how to design for a “community archive” or “accessible archive” by unpicking the nature of the archive typology and understanding what components allow a building to function as an archive. How these components can be designed to change the essence of that archive will dictate how accessible the building can allow its material to be and how relevant the archive can be to the modern community.

This project will utilise two different methodologies for interrogating the archive: First, analysis will be carried out on three case studies located in Glasgow through field research, and the nature of these archives will be analysed in order to understand how they work, what component parts complete them, and how they interact with the communities they serve.

Secondly, I will take findings from this field research to support a desk based reinterrogation of my own stage 5 thesis project, allowing a chance to revisit the project from an analytical standpoint, uncovering how successful the design was at delivering an accessible archive.

Ultimately this project aims to build a skill set for designing a modern archive through the lens of promoting access and protection in harmony.

Introduction

Research Question “How to evaluate the success of an archive building in regard to accessibility” An interrogation of the archive typology and its place in modern society.

Methodology

For this research, I have utilised case study analysis in order to understand the archive typology.

I employed two different approaches to analyse the case studies, undertaking field research for case studies one to three, and desk based interrogation for the fourth case study, my own stage 5 thesis project.

I used both covert and overt observation tactics in research for case studies one to three, acting sometimes undercover in the archive, booking an appointment and taking out material to research, whilst quietly observing the goings on of the archive from the perspective of a user.

I also worked overtly in some of the field visits, engaging in open conversations with the archivists about the functions of the archive. I was offered tours of the building and stores whilst working overtly and was able to gain first hand insight into the often unseen areas of the archive.

These methods have been utilised to gain a deeper understanding of the functions and facets of the archive that have an impact on the level of accessibility of the building and material within.

For the fourth case study, my stage 5 thesis project for an archive in Brussels, Belgium, I utilised purely desk based interrogation methods. I re-interrogated the brief, drawings and overall design of the original project in order to unpick the archive, equipped with the new insights gained from field research in the prior case studies.

This research method was utilised in order to determine the success of my stage 5 project in achieving what it set out to, to create an accessible archive.

These two methods of research; observation and interrogation, have allowed me to reflect and conclude on how to design for more accessible, community driven archives.

Introducing case studies one to three

The Glasgow City Archives @ The Mitchell Library The Glasgow City Archives holds records of the city’s history, residing in the city’s largest referencing library; The Mitchell Library.

The archives are surrounded by a rich programme of other educational and research facilities, fostering a traditional culture and approach to archiving and researching.

The Glasgow Women’s Library Bridgeton The Glasgow Women’s Library is a community driven institution located on the city’s south side in the former public library in Bridgeton. It boasts a diverse programme and its ambition is to create a library and archive that celebrates communities and groups that are commonly absent in recorded history. Focusing on celebrating the history of LGBTQ+, women and ethnic minorities, and finding ways of exposing this material to the wider community.

The Alasdair Gray Archives @ The Whisky Bond The Alasdair Gray Archive commemorates the life and work of Scottish artist Alasdair Gray. The archive holds almost all of his life’s work and is designed as a recreation of the artist’s studio, allowing an immersive experience of the world of Alasdair Gray.

The Case Studies

The fourth case study, the stage 5 thesis project

Archive in Molenbeek Brussels, Belgium.

This archive is the design outcome of my stage 5 thesis project.

Situated in the industrial territory of Brussels, this archive endeavours to celebrate the cultural diversity of its surrounding neighbourhoods; Molenbeek and Anderlecht. Both have large immigrant populations and disconnected communities.

The archive creates a space to foster connection between these communities and also back to the industrial heritage of the area itself.

Chapter One Culture

The culture of the archive dictates how the user can behave in the archive and contributes to how it is perceived in wider society in terms of accessibility. The way users can interact with the material, with the staff and with each other in these spaces can affect the reasons why the user comes to archive, and how they use it, be it for research or recreational purposes.

Case Study 1: The Mitchell Library

The Mitchell Library is an institution in the city, and the grandeur of the library’s architecture has an impact on the atmosphere and culture of the spaces within.

Through covert observation and time spent in the research room, I was able to observe a formal and quiet atmosphere. There is an expectation that voices should be kept low so as not to disrupt other users, that this is a place where people come to learn, study and research.

Most people in the archive carry books, pencil and paper, traditional forms of studying tools that lend well to the traditional culture which exists within this archive.1

Case Study 2: The Glasgow Women’s Library

The Glasgow Women’s Library embodies a culture of inclusivity and warmth. During observational research of this space, and conversation with staff it became apparent that this is a space which wants to offer a friendly hand to members of the community through their facilities.

There is a casual rapport between staff and users, with refreshments and a warm environment on offer.2 Case Study 3: The Alasdair Gray Archive

The Alasdair Gray Archive embodies a culture of excitement. Through conversation with volunteers here, it became evident that there is a real passion and desire to spread awareness of Gray’s work.

Observing visitors during my time there, I was aware of the sense of intrigue felt by almost all who visited.

The relaxed culture and opportunity to be tactile with the material, creates a sense of immersion in the world of Alasdair Gray.3

Chapter Two Collection

The collection of an archive acts as its backbone. But how does an archive collection come into existence, where do materials come from and how are they collected?

What role does value come into it? How does each piece in the collection relate to the others? How do they form a unit of information that is useful for societies of today and future?

Case Study 1: The Mitchell Library 12th 12thcentury century

The Glasgow City Archive collection is one that dates back to the 12th century, beginning as early as 1157.

It began as a place to hold important documentation capturing the formation of the city of Glasgow itself, and has since continued to grow, now holding a variety of documents, drawings, books and other material.

“The City Archives collects, preserves, manages and provides access to the documentary heritage of Glasgow and other parts of the West of Scotland.

Our collections include both official and private records, and tell the story of Glasgow and its people from the 12th century to the 21st.” 5 21st century 21st century

The materials it holds today relate to the city of Glasgow and other areas of relevance in the west of Scotland. Containing original historic documentation and building on this by collection information on more modern growth and development of the area.

It is an open collection, holding many donated items, and still accepting donations today.6

Case Study 2: The Glasgow Women’s Library

The Glasgow Women’s Library archive collection celebrates the everyday, the items that have traditionally been deemed not worthy to be held in archive collections. A collection of items which tell the story of women, LGBTQ+, and other communities which are less visible in typical archive collections.7 Case Study 3: The Alasdair Gray Archive

The Alasdair Gray Archive collection is a closed one, comprising of almost all of the artist’s works, his published novels, but also, his personal belongings.

The range of items in the collection ranging from the artist’s high profile works, to niche belongings like his tippex and jar of pickled mussels, allow a personal and intimate insight into the artists life.8

Following new insight from the prior case studies, I revisited how the collection of this archive would come together.

The archive builds a collection of historical information relating to the areas industrial history, remembering and celebrating a forgotten identity of Molenbeek following its industrial decline. To compliment this, the archive recognises the changing face of the area, with high numbers of immigrant populations and diverse neighbourhoods and builds up a collection of everyday items from residents, allowing them to imprint their culture in a celebratory way.

The collection of formal, historic material, as well as less traditionally “valuable” items, holistically documents the identity of this part of the city.9

Chapter Three Programme

Around the core function of the archive as a store, there are other programmes that help provide access to the material within it. The composition of this other programme can transform an inaccessible vault of material, into an accessible archive. Allowing the collection to be exposed to the community, drawing users in through social activities, educating through library and exhibition facilities, and providing a desirable space where refreshment and warmth is offered.

I re-interrogated the programme of the thesis project based on findings from the prior case studies, something I had not done initially in the design process.

I proposed the archive and exhibits make up half of the programme, placing importance on the collection.

The remainder of the programme comprises of educational and social spaces, creating a well balanced programme that supports sharing of knowledge and building connection.13

Chapter Four Processes

The archive functions on a series of processes, from the moment a material enters the archive, to the study of it in the research room. How well these processes function can impact the success of the archive as a research hub, ensuring that material is collected, catalogued and exhibited in an effective way.

Case Study 1: The Mitchell Library

One of the first interactions a user may have with an archive is through browsing online to gauge what kind of material the archive holds, and if there is anything that may relate or interest them.

One of the biggest access problems I found when carrying out my field visit to the Glasgow City Archive, was the lack of a digital catalogue of material.

Because of this I was unable to be sure what items the archive had, which made the booking process difficult, as research material had to be selected at this point.

There are also barriers to recording whilst in the research room, with tools limited pen and paper. Photos can be taken, but a consent form is required before leaving the archive with photographs of anything and there are limitations on what these photos can be used for.14 18

At the Glasgow Women’s Library, there was a resistance from the archivists on using the traditional dewy decimal system as an organisational strategy. This is because of the Eurocentric and heteronormative preferences of this system, pushing feminine, queer, and ethnically diverse categories out, and identifying them as abnormal, or substandard.

The Glasgow Women’s Library have developed their own feminist classification, which creates a more equal and accessible library and archive for all users.15

Case Study 3: The Alasdair Gray Archive

The Alasdair Gray Archive has a unique organisational strategy, as it is a recreation of the artists studio, down to the last book on the bookshelf, everything is placed exactly as Gray had it. Above that, there is no careful organisation of the work, other than high level categorising of some of the art.16 19

One of the key processes in this archive deals with how the users travel through the building, how the material travels through the building, and where and how the two can interact with each other.

Artefacts are brought in through a loading entrance and transported through the core to be processed, maintained and exhibited.

Visitors to the archive are brought in from a different entrance, and also transported through the building’s core, interacting with exhibits and archival material on their journey.17

Chapter Five Architecture

The final chapter of analysis is the architecture of the archives. The forms that encapsulate the culture, collection, programme and processes of the archive are as different as the events going on inside.

From grand historic library buildings, to tenement shop fronts, to industrial units, each of the case studies exemplifies how different architectural styles can be used to create different experiences for the user.

Case Study 1: The Mitchell Library

The Glasgow City Archives are held in one of the most monumental libraries in the city, a landmark and a grand piece of architecture, to symbolise the importance and history of the collection.

The building is a collage of three façades, the original Mitchell Library at the front, a brutalist 1980s addition in the middle, and the amalgamation of the historic Mitchell Theatre at the back.

The entrances set at either end in the historic structures, give the user a grand entrance, however, the bulk of the collection is actually held in the 19th century addition.18 22

Case Study 2: The Glasgow Women’s Library

The Glasgow Women’s Library’s architecture has changed drastically since its beginnings in 1991. The organisation grew out of a feminist art festival, from a small shop front in Garnethill, the organisation continued to grow and found a new residence in a former public library in Bridgeton. This building is much more fitting for the growing library and archive, and the institution has been able to make its mark on this Carnegie library, creating accessible interventions where it can.19 Case Study 3: The Alasdair Gray Archive

The Alasdair Gray Archive is housed in the Whisky Bond, in the north of the city. Located in an industrial warehouse, the working class vernacular of this building is relevant to a lot of the imagery in Gray’s work, and helps set up context for users about the artists beliefs, values and background. The repetition of the units references vault vernacular, but masks the richness of the collection within.20 23

The architecture of this archive emulates the cultural ambition of the institution.

The contrast of heavy, solid boxes floating in a translucent skin, represents the contrast in the archive between access and protection.

In the solid parts of the building, archival storage and preservation takes place, but in the more open, ethereal spaces in the building, social interactions occur.

The buildings tower like structure sits in an expansive landscape, acting as a landmark for the area, identifying it as an important space for the community.

A building that celebrates the past, present and future of communities often overlooked and forgotten.21

Reflection

Reflecting on the process and findings Reflecting on the processes and methods I utilised in this research, I feel that both the observational research and interrogative research both offered successful ways of analysing the archive.

I was able to gain first hand insight into the archive and the experience of the user.

Acting as a covert researcher allowed me to view the archive from a users perspective and changed a lot of the high level ideas I had about how the archive works.

Overtly speaking with archivists and being offered access to the archive stores of some of the case study buildings provided another layer of new understanding of spaces and people who are crucial to the everyday running of these buildings.

Following the field research of the first three case studies with a redrawing study of my stage 5 thesis project, offered an opportunity to unpick new findings from the field research and rethink my design process by re-interrogating my own work.

Reflecting on the findings of this research, the two different research methods have offered me many new insights into the archive typology that I felt were lacking in my design process in stage 5.

I have uncovered the ways these buildings function on a level beyond what I was able to understand previously, having never used an archive or spent much time in one.

I have a better understanding of why these buildings exist and how they integrate with the communities surrounding them.

I feel comfortable that I have been able to answer my initial research question through this process: “How to evaluate the success of an archive building in regard to accessibility” An interrogation of the archive typology and its place in modern society.

Conclusion

The outcome of the research Through interrogating the 4 chosen case studies, utilising both observational research methods in the field, and desk based analysis methods, I’ve uncovered new findings on the archive typology.

In relation to the five key aspects of the archive that I identified, I have gained an understanding of the components that come together to form an archive.

Generating experience maps of the four archive buildings helped me summarise the user experience of the archives, and put into context the relevance of the five key facets of the archive on the overall accessibility and connection to the community.

The maps depict the diversity across the typology, with the The Glasgow City Archives map depicting the formality this archive imposes on the user.

The Glasgow Women’s Library map captures the balance of this inclusive and accessibility driven institution.

The Alasdair Gray Archive revealed an unconventional institution, celebrating an unconventional artist. The traditional sense of organisation and preservation is overtaken by the desire to create an immersive experience for the user.

Finally, re-interrogation and mapping of my own stage 5 thesis project, helped me understand how successfully my design cultivated an accessible space for connection and education. Re-analysing the building using findings from the first three case studies, I was able to revisit unresolved aspects of the design such as, the programme, the collection, and the processes which would allow interaction between artefacts and user.

Overall, I feel I have gained a deeper understanding of the way archives can be designed and how this can improve their relevance and impact on a modern society.

I feel the outcomes of this research have formed a skill set which I can utilise in the design of these buildings in the future.

Appendix 1

Original stage 5 thesis project This research utilises findings from field research of three existing archives and applies new knowledge to my stage 5 thesis project. This is done to uncover which parts of the stage 5 design align with the values I set in the brief for accessibility and community engagement, in order to gain new understanding as to what features of the archive should be designed in what way to allow for these design outcomes to be achieved.

This project explores the themes of cultural protection both conceptually and physically in the form of an archive for the city of Brussels.

The theme of protection is symbolised in the heavy floating structures encapsulated within a light ethereal skin. Within the heavy structure is the archive, designed to physically protect the artefacts within, and allow public circulation and enjoyment of the building through adjacent contrasting and ethereal exhibition space. This concept aims to allow for public engagement with the archive, whilst protecting and celebrating the objects and information within.

The building sits as a beacon within the city of Brussels, nestled in an uninhabited node between the diverse and rich districts of Molenbeek and Anderlecht, aiming to engage and connect a diverse population through the landscape it creates as well as the space within.

Anchored on the canal, the building tells the story of the industrial territory’s history, uncovering a forgotten portion of the canal and utilising it within the building to engage and celebrate.

The building tells the story of the city not only through the artefacts held within, but in the architectural experience the user has whilst journeying through the perimeter landscape, and the spaces within.

Items requested for research: “Women’s Suffrage Collection including ephemera such as card games, jewellery, postcards and clocks; Jus Suffragii, the newsletter of the International Women’s Suffrage Alliance and rare books on the topic of Women’s Suffrage” - Summary of requested collection as found on Glasgow Women’s Library digital catalogue.

I was given a tour of the building and archive stores by one of the archivist, Mae, and then took some time to look through the selected material.
