ARCH 4010 - FALL 2021 Yamuna River Project 2021 Rajasthan Cities: Jaipur Studio Instructors: Pankaj Vir Gupta, Maria Gonzalez Aranguren

Anganwadis are a key community space in most of India’s rural areas, including the agricultural belt along the western edge of Jaipur. Originally intended to provide supplemental nutrition, informal education, and basic healthcare to communities of up to 1000 women and children, these centers are usually lacking the basic equipment and resources they need to fully function, and are not sufficient for the populations they are required to serve.

My project proposes redeveloping the aganwadi center typology to include other related programs — including pop-up markets, job training, further primary education, more adequate healthcare, and water collection + sanitation. The fixed spaces will be served by a series of mobile “experts” in these fields that can travel around to the individual locations on a regular schedule, supporting the basic activities that occur at each location — forming a network of community amenties serving the rural and peri-urban poor in Jaipur.

Current System is Overtaxed Under the IDHC’s original plan, anganwadi centers (AWCs) are intended to serve communities of 6001000 people. However, using Jaipur’s population density data by ward, I estimated the actual number of people served by each AWC — nearly all are providing services to many times more than that amount of people.

Developing a Mobile Network With the addition of these programs (see pg. 10), the renewed anganwadi has an ambitious vision.

In Section A series of site-cast concrete pads elevate the ground plane, allowing for more effective maintenance and sanitation than a traditional dirt floor. The slight raising + lowering of these pads helps reinforce the subtle divisions of space within the system of primary walls and surrounding frames. At certain points, the structure opens up to give space for interior courtyards.

ARCH 3020 - SPRING 2021 Instructor: Katie Stranix

The Dell is sited near an important node of the UVA grounds — close by to a variety of key travel routes and destinations for students, staff, and visitors to grounds.

However, the site is divided into two clear levels by a substantial grade change, with no clear connection between them.

I aimed to develop a new collective commons as a place of connection for the site. Three bars “tumble”­down the hillside, each corresponding to a programmatic focus (“Eat,” “Learn,” and “Play”). These bars are united together by a central spine, which

organizes

circulation,

structure,

and the spaces surrounding it. Extending out into the site, the spine invites those traveling by to enter into the commons and either engage with the spaces within or simply pass through.

Diagramming the Site The Dell site is a key node of intersection on UVA’s grounds, with close proximity to many programs and transportation routes of different modes and speeds. However a ~20’ grade change separates the site into two clear halves, only connected by two small staircases, diminishing the connectivity of the site.

Building as Three Bars Through diagramming our assigned programs for the collective commons (at left), I began to explore the division into three programmatic “focuses”: “Eat,” “Learn,” and “Play”. I explored how this could be reflected in the form of the building itself as a collection of three bars.

Creating the Spine However, I wanted my commons to be more than just a collection of discrete “bars” — this led to the idea of a continuous spine running throughout, navigating the grade change of the site and organizing structure, circulation, and space within the building.

Drawing the Project The upper floor of the building contains collective spaces for cooking and eating, as well as administrative offices. An outdoor plaza for dining and gathering is located between my project and the existing academic buildings to the south.

ARCH 3010 - FALL 2020 Instructor: Jeana Ripple

Our studio was tasked with designing a modern-day adaptation of the traditional trade school in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Informed by GIS studies of the future of rising sea levels in NYC, my trade school focused on the practices of resilient and sustainable construction. The building is divided into two complementary programs — the trade school and an education center for the general public — divided and connected by an exchange space that forms a continuous diagonal cut through the structure.

school

is

designed

as

a

living example of the resilient construction principles it teaches, envisioned as a precedent for how intelligent design can help coastal cities in the US and around the world address rising sea levels and related climate change issues. ­

A New York City Atlas I examined the relationship of NYC to its extensive coastal areas, looking at the scale of the region as a whole, as well as two specific neighborhoods: first, the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn, and then the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Developing through Collage + Models I was intrigued by the diagonal “cut” through the regular urban fabric formed by the Manhattan Bridge, which extends directly through my site. I experimented with incorporating a diagonal cut in building section.

Cast Models Continuing my focus on the idea of a diagonal cut organizing the building in section, I explored areas of solid and void in the structure. I experimented more with “lifting” the upper floors off the ground to create an open plaza at the street level, and considered by the diagonal cut could bring light in.

01 Program The building is divided into two major programmatic areas: the trade school itself, and an education center for the general public to come and learn about issues of resilience and sustainability. These two areas are mediated by an exchange space which separates and connects these halves as it forms a continuous diagonal cut from the street entrance up to the green roof terrace.

Regulating Water The center is imagined as a living example of the sustainable practices it teaches. A system of retention ponds at ground level use natural wetland plants to filter water, helping slow the flow of water into the city’s storm drain system. When dry, these recessed areas become places of gathering.

Lifecycle of the Center The current isometric is proposed as a starting point in the lifecycle of the building — not the final destination. Resilience strategies that don’t take into account the possiblity of ADAPTATION in the future will ultimately be ineffective.

ARCH 2020 - SPRING 2020 Instructor: Robin Dripps

The ARCH 2020 studio considered housing across a variety of scales and contexts, focusing on issues of program, circulation and access, and spatial ownership. We were tasked with designing a collective housing block for a site along E. Broad St. in Richmond, Virginia.

My design aims to replicate the liveliness and variety of a city streetscape at each level of the building. Private and communal spaces are linked by a network of streets and alleys, which are connected across floors by two prominent stairs that gently slope down from the rooftop terrace to the public plaza at street level. The building encircles this central plaza, with a large volume subtracted from the southern corner of the site to provide ample light to the interior. This process of subtraction creates a series of terraces, imagined as a continuous rooftop park stepping up to the densest part of the block. ­

Urban Form The first three floors of the block form two parallel bars, punctured by a pedestrian street at ground level. Above this, the building takes on more of a perimeter block form, gradually decreasing in size as the terraces “step up” to the highest point along the corner of E. Broad St. and 4th St.

Unit Design The design for each unit is based on a single main wall, which is thickened to provide built-in storage and a sound barrier from neighbors. Various furniture pieces pull out or swing down from this wall, allowing for flexible use of space inside the efficiently-sized units.

The Vertical City The street created at each level of the housing block is a place for interaction.

It’s width is varied to create alternating senses of compression and expansion, helping define the boundary between private and communal spaces. Cutthroughs in the floors provide a greater vertical connection between levels, and are strategically located to add a sense of separation between the privacy of individual units and the public street.

ARCH 2010 - FALL 2019

Instructor: Belen Gonzalez Aranguren

The ARCH 2010 studio considered an underused site along the Charlottesville downtown mall, and asked to revitalize those spaces, designing a space of public engagement while considering the preexisting context. Through drawings and iterative models, I developed my final design and program of a library.

My design adapted a structural system developed in an earlier project, where the various functional spaces of the building are contained within a series of monolithic concrete walls. Small landings extend from these walls across numerous levels, creating a fragmented spatial organization, which is compounded by the irregularity of the glass-enclosed areas. This fragmented nature produces an image of ruins being reinhabited, dialoguing with the adjacent hotel tower that has remained unfinished.­

Structure The monolithic walls contain the functional spaces of the structure. Many of the stairs are carved out of the walls, as well as bookshelves, and benches, nooks for seating, and fold-down tables for conferencing and meeting.

Instructor: Belen Gonzalez Aranguren

This project was an intermediary step as our studio transitioned from considering a rural site to an urban one (Tectonic Library, pg. 46). Given an abstracted volume (corresponding to the sites along the downtown mall), we were tasked with developing a circulatory system with integrated inhabitable space.

In my design, I experimented with the material relationship between solidity and airiness. Wooden platforms and steps are cantilevered

from

monolithic

concrete

walls, and inhabitable spaces are “carved” out of the walls where the structure allows it. I continued to develop this structural system moving forward into my Tectonic Library project.

Work done during winter break externship with Bonstra Haresign Architects in Washington, DC. I prepared presentation plans for website display for the Park Center project, an adaptive reuse project converting a pair of office buildings (located in Alexandria, VA) into apartments.

FALLINGWATER MODEL 2013-2014 PERSONAL PROJECT

A model of Fallingwater at 1/4” = 1’ scale — constructed in 8th grade for a “Do Hard Things” challenge. I used a variety of materials, including foam, acrylic, cardboard, museum board, and paper. I built the model from scratch, using building plans and elevations as reference, as well as photos that I took during a visit in the summer of 2013.
