OVER A third of GP surgeries in Southwark are putting their patients at risk through poor care, with over a quarter facing an inspection within months, a health watchdog revealed this week.
The national survey of England’s medical practices labelled one in six as ‘high risk’ and in need of an inspection by the Care Quality Commission within a matter of months. The same assessment identified one in three of Southwark’s surgeries as putting patients either at “risk” or “elevated risk” through inadequate care, with over a quarter in the highest priority category. Over 7,000 surgeries were ranked using 38 different criteria covering safety and basic care and put into one of six priority bands with those in band one representing the highest risk. Twelve of Southwark’s 46 surgeries were placed in this band and will be subject to a day-long inspection in the coming months. Full story on page 15...
