I have recently graduated with M.Arch (Prof) - Masters of Architecture at the University of Cape Town (2019). Working as a junior architect at Noero Architects has shaped me and the way I think about and practice architecture. I am interested in creating beautiful architecture. I personally would define this as architecture having a strong relationship between form and purpose – here beauty can be achieved. I also believe architecture should be fulfilled in order to satisfy some sort of ethical good or social purpose. It should attempt to deeply transcend the idea of use into something that must encompass a desired way of living or manifestation of life. Here architecture falls into the realm of a ‘Practical Art.’ I believe architecture should be relevant to history, context, culture, socio-economics, and the environment. I believe architecture should also address the three big cores of the environment – architecture, urban design and landscape. South Africa is a country with a lot of damage from the past – I believe architecture can be used to positively transform our landscape into productive and socially relevant environments for future generations. I possess a creative mind with a responsibility towards the company and I’m an efficient and hard working person. I also possess a good personality and can maintain cordial relations with fellow colleagues. I am now interested in broadening my knowledge and work of architecture, people and culture in different kinds of places around the South Africa and the world.

Work Experience 2018-2019

History and Theory of Architecture Tutor for HATA 3 and 4 in 2018 and 2019 for second year BAS students. Worked as Design Aid tutor for third year BAS students in 2019 at University of Cape Town.

Noero Architects - worked as Junior architect. Worked on Somerset West Christ Church, included working on council submission, all construction drawings, presentation images and booklets, light and layout studies. Worked on an experimental housing project called the urbanXchanger - tafel huis and 24 Alfred Street renovations. Involved in exhibition at Cape institute for architecture –‘art or architecture, a way of making’, worked on many timber models such as CCSW Church, UWC extensions and Maboneng housing project.

Islamic Tirthas Masters Design Dissertation

Abstract This dissertation attempts to explore the boundaries of architecture: its relationship with natural and cultural landscapes.

The investigation explores an identified ‘River precinct’ from Zandvliet Waste water treatment plant along the Kuils and Eerste River through an agricultural community towards an important religious site. This site is a well-known Islamic burial site or kramat of Sheikh Yusuf Al-Makassari as well as being part of a claimed Islamic Heritage site known as the ‘commonage’. The site was historically established along the Eerste River by Sheikh Yusuf as a farming community which became a rallying point for slaves and other exiles, eventually becoming to what was known as one of the first Muslim communities in South Africa. The site is under threat due to a number of aspects that have had detrimental impact to the heritage site such as water shortages, flooding, pollution from the treatment plant, and a receding indigenous ecology due to open cast sand mines and encroachment of other industrial developments.

This dissertation re-imagines a new heritage pilgrimage route along the Eerste-Kuil River which offers a renewed significance to the heritage site known as the ‘Cradle of Islam’ in the Cape. The design project further proposes a series of water infrastructures that sanctify the site in various ways along the pilgrimage route which re-define post-industrial infrastructure as 21st century resilient, ecological and socio-cultural network infrastructures.

The infrastructures offer themselves as pausing moments along the route which formally act as eidetic signifiers within the landscape actualizing/crystalizing the significance of the site. These infrastructures visually re-frame a pilgrim’s view of the landscape as significant vistas. The infrastructures take formal inspiration from Islamic geometry (metaphysical) and other functional (physical) industrial geometrical devices.

The infrastructures are functionally engaged with terrestrial sphere of reality - designed as a hybrid series of check dams, bridges that provide services such as water storage, water distribution systems (luivoors), low technology purification and preventative flooding engineering feats to the historic agricultural community. The infrastructures also engage with the celestial sphere of reality, designed like a pavilion allowing public and pilgrims to have a meaningful experience of space and human body/spirit which were meditative, reflective, healing, calming or even transcendental and transformative spaces.

Towards a more resilient sanctified rural landscape -Sacredscapes Islamic tirthas are structured between the sacred and the profane along the river pilgrimage, it is important to first understand that these infrastructures are interconnected to an array of resilient urban strategies within the rural landscape.

This proposal within this landscape is termed the Sacredscape and consists of four specific strategies - illustrated by the figure on the right.

Tirthas (Water infrastructures) This consists of 5 different types and are arranged along the route between most profane to most sacred. These infrastructures take the form of hybrids of bridges and check dams, however, each type offering different purposes according to more specific nuanced site conditions found nearby.

Check dams and stepped channels The water infrastructures create a bridge that simultaneously works as an impoundement. This dam like structure is not a large construction as no serious excavation works are required - the water along the river is ‘checked’ - otherwise known as a check dam. It comes with many advantages such as water storage and the strengthening of local biodiversity.

The stepped channels are used along the river when necessary as a flooding preventative method against 1:50 year flood. These channels are used for other opportunities such as seating, stairs as well as planters for indigenous riparian vegetation.

Water distribution The water stored in these check dams are pumped to the highest point within the water infrastructure (water tower) via a low tech hydro pump and then gravity fed through a pipe towards a water point on the farms. From here the water is distributed through a system of luivoors between farms and the community for daily water usage.

Farming and future sustainable housing The tirthas as earlier stated also act as bridges. These kinds of bridges are used for the pilgrims or community who need to cross the river. In the near future, these intersections could potentially be used for a bridging across towards the community of Macassar. New roads alongside new farms and sustainable housing could stitch the fragmented rural landscape. These new farms and sustainable water systems could create a flourishing off-grid community which is e specially important knowing our future would be more exposed to resource scarcity and climate change.

Exploring Muqarnas as ‘celestial cascades’ Muqarnas are used in the niches of domes in Islamic architecture for both structural purposes and as ornamentation purposes “Muqarnas are structured on tiered horizontal layers joined by flat and curved surfaces which articulate their descent- echoing the idea of spiritual light cascading from the Heavens to condense as crystalline matter on Earth”1 - Daud Sutton.

Developing the Muquarnas This section attempts to describe and illustrate this stage of design development and process mostly through drawings, renders and light studies. This iterative process resulted in array of different collective arrangements of the muquarnas.

This process developed the muquarnas in the early stages of as a modular component that can be easily manipulated and varied.

Modular Components This section deals with components that make up the muqarna as a celestial cascading device and the other dealing with the muqarna as a terrestrial device.

Celestial cascading device Type A The form begins with a barrel vault which is technically weakened by removing a vault shape perpendicular to barrel vault. This form as it stand is created by stacking bricks in a Catalan vault technique with a herringbone pattern. This is supported by two thick brick diagonal arches 400mm deep.

This helps to provide enough support to hold up once weakened barrel vault.

Type B The form is similar to type A, however the edges of the muquarna is straighten with a large amount of bricks - this create a place where rainwater tanks are stored.

Type C This form also starts with a barrel vault, however, stands vertically. Vault shapes extrude their void forms to create a weakened barrel vault placed and strengthened with columns. The edges where the structure faces tension - a pre-cast concrete section replaces it, along with other precast coping modules.

Terrestrial device Type D This type is very similar to type A in terms of form. The muqarna is just rotated around and acts as a wall base structure instead of column based structure. This structure is supported by buttress like edges and finished off with a series of pre-cast concrete copings.

Exploring Muquarnas as modular components Model making was an important process that allowed a playful investigation to uncover all the possible potentials of the muquarna component configurations.

Types For the final thesis presentation, I focused on developing only three of the several possible types of Islamic tirthas along the new Eerste-Kuil river pilgrimage. This part of the document will illustrate the series of final drawings associated respectively to each type in the order experienced along the route. Refer back to pages 84 to 89, which provide more detailed descriptions for each of the developed types.

Namely: 1-Baths, an informal practice of bathing and swimming along the river. The water here before entering the baths is filtered and heated with solar panels.

2-Souk, Frames vistas towards the kramat and serves as an extension of the Nural Latief mosque which has the capacity to accomodate small trade, reading rooms and even large festivals such as the Kramat Festival.

3-Temple, frames vistas towards the kramat and allows itself to be a pausing or inbetween space before entering kramat.

Agricultural Development Existing farms and new proposed farms would are accomodated by the water infrastructure termed “Islamic Tirtha�. Kwikspace forming part of the Cape Agency for Sustainable Integrated Development in Rural Areas provide modular shelters for emerging vegetable farmers in Macassar. This with other resilient plans could emerge from this potential future. This helps to strengthen the communities local economy from which it was originally established since the arrival of Sheik Yusuf.

Luivoors - Water distribution Water from check dams created by infrastructure is distributed through a system of luivoors between farms and the community for daily water usuage. These are a system channels of water that distributes water with gravity through branches of furrows or other channels that within a community to irrigate farms and cultivated lands.

Precedent The infrastructure finds inspiration from Islamic architecture including the check dam bridges in Iran and tirthas along rivers found in India.

Barsha Pump - The project makes use of a low maintenance and low technology hydro-powered pump irrigation system.

The pump consists of a water wheel with 12 blades which uses ‘hydropstatic pressure difference‘and a spiral tube to generate power to irrigate the water elsewhere without electricity. The tirtha will make use of the channel placed pump which uses a dropped weir to generate speed pumping 40 000 liters per day.

Bath Water ‘purification’ system This zero-energy irrigation system will allow water to be pumped to a high elevation - up to 20m. In this case the infrastructure is designed to have high water tanks integrated within the muquarna. From here the usuage of the water is split - one for the baths and the rest for the farming community. Water is filtered and heated through a solar panel and distributed into the baths. The rest of water that is not heated is gravity fed to the highest point on a farm to a designated water point. From here the water is distributed in the luivoor system.

Flooding illustrates the extent of water for a 50 year flood plain. It is clear that in most parts along the Kuils and Eerste Rivers there is a large extent of flooding into both agricultural area of Sandvlei and pockets of urban areas within Macassar. This is particularly worse just after the Kuils River meets with the Eerste River.

Evidence of the potential dangers of this flooding plain, specifically framed around the river and other freshwater bodies, is clearly illustrated in the history of flooding in Cape Town and the Cape Flats.

Stepped channels An additional condition along the river precint is considered to help prevent flooding in the Sandvlei and Macssar region. The stepped channels are used along the river when necessary as a flooding preventative method against 1:50 year flood. These channels are used for other opportunities such as seating, stairs as well as planters for indigenous riparian vegetation.

Conclusion This dissertation re-imagines a new heritage pilgrimage route along the Eerste-Kuil River which offers a renewed significance to the heritage site known as the ‘Cradle of Islam’ in the Cape. The design project further proposes a series of water infrastructures that sanctify the site in various ways along the pilgrimage route which re-define post-industrial infrastructure as 21st century resilient, ecological and socio-cultural network infrastructures.

These water infrastructures extended into both natural and cultural realms. They are termed Islamic tirthas. These infrastructure attempt is to try and achieve various states of liminality - points of intersections.

Structured through a new ‘River Pilgrimage’ each tirtha is discovered and structured through most profane to most sacred. These infrastructures offer simultaneously a Heritagescape through the lens of ‘Eidetic Image-ability’. This hopes to allow the infrastructure to crystallize the significance of the Islamic Heritage Site and ‘Cradle of Islam’ in the Cape designed between traditional and contemporary references.

It also extends its accommodation to the community by providing sustainable water systems and amenities to the agricultural community.

The celestial explains the infrastructure simultaneously offering architectural qualities that explore light and water to create spaces that are meditative, healing, or even transcendental. This transitional or liminal process is described by tirthas - an experience of physical state towards the metaphysical state.

Essentially a core theme has developed - The idea is to design around a spatial framework that embodies the of bringing of the everyday and ordinary, profane into extra-ordinary practices and places of wonder or ‘sacred’ like places more often.

This can help new and different ways for people to more regularly encounter and interact with ideas related to wonder or other kinds of experiences.

This could help us understand that our lives are truly insignificant, restoring our perspective of the world- and in doing so humbling us, making our everyday mundane task of our lives less significant and more bearable.

What these specific infrastructures are that can help achieve these kinds of experiences is something that needs to be worked and developed on - not only within context of Cradle of Islam in the Cape, but also for society.

Nature’s Temple Scapes Honours Project

A series of triangular inverted pyramid like structures capture pine needles and cones in a forest. These would be connected to other triangular pyramid like structures, which would filter in light and distribute it through a series of vertically placed glass triangular prisms. This would then create re-directed paths of light where fynbos will be able to flourish. A Fynbos landscape begins to emerge and exist simultaneously with alien species (pine).

The inverted pyramid structures also collect water into large tanks below. This water can be filtered and be used for drinking as well as create water pipe systems for the growing fynbos below. The water creates a cycle with pipes between the storage tank and the vertically placed glass prisms through a pump. This is achieved with connecting pipes.

Here the natural ecology would slowly transform.

Water collection points and the creation of compost nodes could also now exist. An existing path leading towards a Kramat, Muslim burial site, near Deer Park will now be re-imagined as a new pilgrimage through this intervention.

Macassar Aftercare Centre Simulated Office

By inverting the model of the old Macassar Community Centre the proposal makes use of the previously neglected site. Space between old and new creates an internal protected courtyard. This space allows for rest and a retreat for youth after school.

A series of activities aim to work in unison to revitalize the old Macassar Community Centre. These spaces are connected together by a new roof which uses daylighting as a new edge of the building. Allowing for suitable internal spaces of learning as well as a beacon or lantern for surrounding Macassar.

A raised plinth alond the edges of the site creates a certain sense of privacy between street and studio yet allows both programs to touch disregarding the normative buffer zone between space of learning and the public.

Between earth and sky The relationship of form and light ABT Poster

The advanced building technology elective required a research paper. This paper was focused on understanding the importance of beauty and its relationship to light and roofs in contemporary architectural practice.

The investigation uses the Kuwait National Assembly designed by Jorn Utzon which best expresses my own inquiry.

My inquiry further investigates the most significant part of Utzon’s scheme. This features a space, which is created by a colonnade of tall thin piers or columns, which support a ‘graceful, draped concrete roof over an open plaza.’ This elegant curving roof which naturally forms a catenary is composed of many semi-circular concrete shells set onto steel cables. The shape of this roof is claimed to reference the ‘iconic tent construction of the Arabian Bedouin people.’

This scheme consists of a series of modular components pre-cast and some cast in situ connected together in a variety of ways. Fundamentally the building merges traditional formal references with contemporary ones in a delightful use and play of natural light – communicating the in-between state of earth and sky.

Mosul Postwar Camp Archstorming Competition

The condition of Mosul Post War Camp lies in the realm of temporariness and permanence. I have decided to design a temporary camp that could potentially become permanent. It is a design that has strived to be resourceful, quick and easy to build while still having strong architectural qualities instead of some temporary lifeless quick fix in most tent like refugee camps. I felt that an urgent humanitarian aid should be a dignified space with natural light and ventilation, a strong reason being is that these camps, most of the time become permanent residences.

A courtyard is created along a series of existing streets.

These ‘streets’ redefine the exterior and interior edges of the building, which participate in reintegrating existing routes towards the old city. Within these courtyards, are a series of platforms made from bottles creates filled with sand on site. Columns are set into pre-drilled holes on MDF boards which creates a platform. Self-assembled sliding doors and industrial vaulted roofs units are fitted freely into spaces along 3,5m grids. There are some general indicating guidelines in terms of the use under these roofs but within this a great variety of spaces and sizes can be accommodated. Here, personal autonomy is created. Mosul residents will now be able to adapt and change their space accordingly to fit their needs. This would be in terms of area, where large families are accommodated and the creation of courtyards by using the sliding roofs. A sense informality drives the formal layout.

Traditional shaped vaulted roofs were used as a historical reference in making the camp a more familiar environment as well as referencing ‘malqafs ‘ – ventilation chimneys which create cool spaces below. Once roofs are installed in the temporary camp it can easily be removed and installed into new concrete column structures within the reintegration zone which would be situated in the older parts of the destroyed city.

Here, the condition of temporariness and permanence is challenged.

Citrus Circle 3rd year major project

Citrus circle explores the idea of architecture as a practical art which attempts to re-interpret and transform the existing textile industry within Salt River - here a 21st century state of the art fabric and textile research and production facility focusing on citrus fibre extraction technology is proposed - within this a public library and research centre is created. The aim of the proposal is to transform the condition of the existing abandoned spaces in Salt River, through considering the history of textile industry and the nature of existing spaces and uses. The building makes it possible to intervene in such a way that it can attempt to positively impact the area.

Textile industry One of the biggest problems in the South African textile industry is the fact we import most of the fabrics from overseas. We pay huge import tax duty fees (22%) specifically from large Chinese textile markets. In order to tackle this issue and to reduce these fees, Cape Town will need there own textile and fabric production facilities. However careful research also needs to be done. Therefore there needs to be an inception of a 21st century research and production facility. The building attempts to address a lot of these issues by focusing on more organic and sustainable solutions for a potential re-emerging textile industry in Salt River.

Specifically alternative solutions to unsustainable petro-chemical based, non-breathable, polyester. A big part of the building will focus on citrus fibre extraction which is an emerging technology that is being tested overseas. In Italy there is 700 million tonnes of orange waste that gets discarded. Two students discovered a way of extracting this fibre and designed and created fashionable clothes that even gave off scents of a citrus flavoured fabric. In Cape Town we have a successful and wonderful citrus industry - namely Ceres, which discards waste much like our European counterparts. The image above illustrates potentially how we can apply this new technology and process into a working cyclical and sustainable system within Cape Town

Salt River which is the site for the textile facility proposal is an important node or connection point between various modes of transportation - this includes Voortrekker road with golden arrows buses and a new Myciti bus route, taxi’s along main road and of course the connecting train lines - which converge towards Salt River train station.

Many people pass through this station as it is key connecting station to other parts of Cape Town - majority of them being working class.

The picture above attempts to illustrate Salt River’s connection to Belville, Bonteheuwel, Cape Flats and Simonstown’s railway lines which inevitably leads you to the CBD.

In the context of Salt River the site is situated in-between the industrial zone and the residential and commercial zone. On the far end ‘natural’ space has been neglected and misused. How can all three of these past and still currently functional uses be integrated? Can a building this size make any real impact? Issues to address include physical and non-physical elements: Physical - spatial divides and boundaries. Non-physical- race and class divisions.

During a mapping exercise it was clearly identified that there were lots of people who would get off at Salt River train station who will have to walk over and cross a busy Voortrekker intersection to get to the Golden arrow bus stop. An attempt to re-route this connection underneath the Voortrekker bridge and through the site, potentially through a new building which would provide a more convenient way of getting to the bus stop. This new route also provides new potential connections to the Salt River Market. These new routes or connections places emphasis on pedestrianized streets.

Other extended problems include: drug abuse, gangsterism and a large homeless population, uneducated youth and adults - due to the lack of access to workshops, libraries or any public educational facilities. Other physical problems include a lack of clean, safe friendly public space, a disintegrated salt river market, a town hall which has lost it’s connection to the community, no emphasis on pedestrians only cars, . Other issues include disparity between classes from – also race related, increasing negative influence gentrification. Site problems - notion of addressing context and the environment, neglected Voortrekker road, noisy and dirty railway road, pedestrian movement from station cause them to cross over Voortrekker road.

Drawings were made to explore potential merging of architecture, urban planning and landscape in one intervention. The idea of streets and the building as a marker in the landscape merged to the surface in most of the drawings and testing of ideas.

Finally the building was arrived at some kind of informed simplicity which is explained in the diagram above. It attempted to address the aforementioned issues both physical and non-physical, programmatically through an architectural intervention. A large emphasis on civic/ public use – idea of a public street through building. A new pedestrian link can be formed from the Salt River train station through the building towards the Salt River market as well as the bus stop on Voortrekker Road.

This route created two wings on either side of the chosen site. The 1st wing – protecting against Voortrekker. The 2nd wing – protecting against railway

A wind catcher or thermal chimney which takes on the form of a tower is an architectural device that creates natural ventilation and cooling in buildings. This idea has been around for centuries, some claim it originated in Iran (Ref image on left).The towers are designed in a way to let in cool outside air driven by prevailing wind pressure.

Internal partitions in the tower allow low pressure on the lee side of the tower to suck air from inside the building (refer to middle image).

This is based on natural convection – hot air rises through towers and gets pulled out through a ‘chimney’.

In the Middle East people used wind towers to capture wind and cool their homes in their hot climate. Image on far right shows a wind tower at the Madinat Jumeirah. “The wooden cross bars were draped with wet cloths so the wind would cool as it blew into the homes in

an early evaporative cooling scheme.” There would be no mechanically ventilated systems like air conditioners in the design of this building - only the application of naturally ventilated tower systems.

The idea of sharing knowledge emerged as one attempt to address a lot of the social concerns that were mentioned previously. The idea of sharing knowledge also has a connection to the researchers that will be using the centre. Therefore the brief emerged into a research and knowledge centre as well as a public library, classroom facilities and workshops. Providing the space for the community of Salt River with one of the most powerful tools - knowledge. Other ideas which could be built in the future include: new small bus station for golden arrow buses, and an adaptive reuse of Salt River market.

The new proposed building creates the new public square or piazza. This new square spills out into the the Salt River market as well as reconnecting Salt River Town hall. Both the new building and market are connected with the new public street.

Merchant House 3rd year minor project

The program which roots itself in the model of a ‘merchant house’ was set out to serve the needs and social fulfillment of the people who originally live there. The proposal consisted of 5 ‘merchant houses’ properties made up of a grocery store, bicycle shop, fabric workshop, hardware store and furniture workshop with each consisting of residential and office space. The site itself presented a 2 m slope allowing for a partial basement on Albert Road, Salt River, Cape Town.

I designed the grocery store on the corner of Alfred and Albert Road. I took advantage of the slope as the building extended out as a grocery store which opens out into an internal ‘street’ within the plot of five other merchant houses that lies adjacent to a public library– this library faces Swanson street. The grocery store occupies the next floor which is raised slightly above ground level. Residences can make use of the tall circulation tower (influenced by Durham Square) that takes stronghold on the corner of both streets. It serves as circulation for all other minor projects included on site.

Buildings of inspiration within Salt River

In the design of this project, I was heavily influenced by the art deco buildings in Salt River. One of them in particular is Durham Square (images above) on the corner of Victoria Road and Durham Avenue. An attempt is made not to mimic the language but rather to learn lessons from the post-modern architectural interpretations.

The roofs and architectural language in this design is borrowed from these surrounding ordinary and factory buildings.

Once again, much like Albert Frey, an attempt was made to absorb elements of the seemingly ordinary and to then transform them into something else - maybe something extra-ordinary. I was particularly interested in roofs and saw-tooth roofs as, I claim, they hold a civic or cultural value that in turn create dignified spaces that create diffused or soft light.

The courtyard on the top ground level acts as a street and open space for the residences. The trees for this courtyard are considered for as a 1,2 m deep concrete circular pot filled with soil is made. This pot’s circular form which is also used for seating for the residences inserts itself into the grocery space below and is transformed into a circular wooden lattice structure used for shelving fruit and vegetables.

Decorative elements on the top of the tower on Victoria Street and Durham Avenue became a poetic light shaft which now has a window shutter that helps with ventilation and heat within the building. The towers were re-interpreted and retain a strong ‘memory’ of the form from the existing tower.

This space (the top of the tower) now serves as the cleaning staffs room.
