Oliva Nova se vive todo el año Escribo estas líneas con gran optimismo e ilusión después de haber tenido que dejar en barbecho nuestros proyectos mucho más tiempo del que nos habría gustado. Una etapa que hemos aprovechado para renovar nuestra imagen, reinventar nuestro discurso y actualizar el estilo de este proyecto editorial.

En Oliva Nova hemos afrontado los retos con energía y con carácter renovador. Cada uno de nosotros hemos pasado por un profundo proceso de cambio y transformación durante todos estos meses, no solo como personas individuales sino también como sociedad. Por eso, quiero destacar la comprensión, el trabajo y el esfuerzo realizado por parte de todo el equipo humano.

Con tanta incertidumbre, les aseguro que no ha sido nada fácil preparar esa ansiada “vuelta a la normalidad” y me enorgullece decir que hemos conseguido que nuestros huéspedes disfruten de una experiencia tranquila y segura en nuestro Resort.

Cada temporada lleva consigo una emoción, un sabor, un color, un deporte... Nos encantan los paseos por la playa en invierno, con temperaturas suaves y días soleados. La primavera representa el despertar de la tierra después de unos meses de letargo, los productos de temporada nos permiten disfrutar de platos más sabrosos durante esta estación. El verano es una campaña especial y casi terapéutica: el azul del Mediterráneo, el sonido de las olas, la brisa marina y hundir los pies en la arena.

El otoño y el golf siempre van de la mano, es el momento del año en el que nuestro campo luce su pleno esplendor.

Encaramos un 2022 apasionante, con numerosos proyectos a la vista para convertir Oliva Nova en un destino más privilegiado si cabe, un paraíso para disfrutar todo el año. ¡Gracias por elegirnos!

Oliva Nova a year-round experience With great optimism and enthusiasm, I write these lines after having had to put our projects on hold for much longer than we would have liked.

We have taken advantage of this period to polish our image, refresh our discourse and update the style of our editorial project.

In Oliva Nova, we have faced every challenge with energy and an innovative character. During these months, each of us has gone through a profound process of change and transformation, not only as individuals but also as a community. For this reason, I would like to highlight the understanding, the work and the effort put in by the entire team.

With so much uncertainty, I can tell you it has not been an easy task to prepare for this long-awaited ‘return to the new normal, and I am proud to say that we have managed to ensure that our guests enjoy a relaxed and safe experience in our Resort.

Each season brings emotion, a flavour, a colour, a sport... We love walks on the beach in winter, with mild temperatures and sunny days. Spring represents the earth’s awakening after a few months of lethargy; seasonal products allow us to enjoy tastier dishes during this season. Summer is a special and almost therapeutic season: the blue of the Mediterranean, the sound of the waves, the sea breeze and sinking your feet in the sand. Autumn and golf always go hand in hand; it is the time of the year when our golf course shows its full splendour.

We face an exciting 2022, with numerous projects insight to turn Oliva Nova into an even more privileged destination, a paradise to enjoy all year round.

his year 2022, is a milestone for us. CHG celebrates its 50th anniversary. Half a century in which our project grew until becoming everything we are today. When our father, Siegfried Borho, came to Oliva and took his first steps in the business, he would never have thought that this resort would become a place of relaxation, recreation and leisure for so many people.

1972 Construcciones Hispano Germanas, Oliva Nova’s real estate development company, is born.

1993 Construction of the first 9 holes of the golf course and the Driving Range. End of the 1st phase of the Hotel with 179 rooms.

1994 Start of Hotel development.

That’s why our Resort, besides offering a wide range of gastronomy and sports, also has a Spa circuit where you can combine Jacuzzi, hydrotherapy, waterfalls and swan’s neck jets in the heated pool. Also, you can enjoy the contrasts of temperature thanks to our Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, footbath and different shower times. Music and aromatherapy complement this to create the perfect combination to achieve the rest we need so much.

To complete these facilities, we also have ten luxurious cabins prepared to offer a wide variety of facial and body treatments and therapeutic massages.

rescientos días de sol en la Comunidad Valenciana y una temperatura media de casi 18 grados hacen de este lugar el espacio perfecto para disfrutar del deporte al aire libre durante todo el año. Y qué mejor que hacerlo en nuestro campo de golf, uno de los favoritos en la Costa Blanca gracias a sus 18 hoyos diseñados en 1995 por el legendario jugador Severiano Ballesteros. Un espacio para que jugadores de cualquier hándicap disfruten de este saludable deporte.

El emplazamiento deportivo se completa con la Casa Club, un zona de 3.000

metros cuadrados que cuenta con una gran panorámica del campo y amplias y cuidadas instalaciones que permiten al jugador disfrutar de todos los servicios que necesite antes y después del juego.

En la planta baja, encontramos la tienda, donde tenemos las mejores marcas de ropa y zapatos, bolas y guantes, artículos de regalo y palos de alquiler. hree hundred days of sunshine in the Valencia Region and an average temperature of almost 18 degrees make this the perfect place to enjoy outdoor sports all year round. And what better way to do it than on our golf course, a favourite on the Costa Blanca thanks to its 18 holes designed in 1995 by the legendary player Severiano Ballesteros. A space for players of any handicap to enjoy this healthy sport.

The sports site gets completed with the Club House, an area of 3,000 square meters with a great panoramic view of the course and spacious and well-kept facilities that allow the player to enjoy all the services they need before and after the game. On the top floor, The Golf Club, the perfect meeting point to recharge your batteries, with panoramic views of the course.

Un centro ecuestre de referencia uestro centro ecuestre, a la altura de los más importantes del panorama internacional, cuenta con 9 pistas de arena, 380 boxes permanentes, espacio para 600 boxes portables, restaurantes, bares e incluso una zona comercial. Todo esto, apenas a 500 metros de la playa.

Desde su apertura, este centro ha logrado atraer a los mejores jinetes de más de 44 países de los 5 continentes gracias a las competiciones internacionales y nacionales de doma clásica y salto.

Los principales eventos que se celebran en el Centro Ecuestre Oliva Nova son las competiciones de salto internacional, el Spring MET y el Autumn MET, que tienen lugar dos veces al año, con una duración total de seis meses. Para verlas, nada mejor que hacerlo en The Club, situado a pie de pista. Un palco inmejorable para ver las competiciones en directo mientras disfrutas de una agradable bebida o un snack.

n a par with the most outstanding international scene, our equestrian centre has 9 sand courts, 380 permanent boxes, space for 600 portable boxes, restaurants, bars, and even a shopping area: everything, just 500 meters from the beach.

Since its opening, this centre has attracted the best riders from more than 44 countries from 5 continents thanks to international and national dressage and show jumping competitions.

The main events held at the Oliva Nova Equestrian Centre are the international show jumping competitions, the Spring MET and the Autumn MET, which take place twice a year, with a total duration of six months. The restaurant The Club, located at the foot of the runway, becomes an unbeatable box to watch the competitions live while enjoying a nice drink or a snack.

Desde aquí, comenzó a trabajar para alzar su negocio al mismo tiempo que ponía sobre el mapa a la Comunidad Valenciana, haciendo hincapié sobre todo en las comarcas de la Safor y la Marina Alta.

os situamos en el Centro Ecuestre Oliva Nova, concretamente entre la pista Valencia y la pista Oliva. Alrededor, más de una treintena de jinetes se preparan junto a sus caballos para participar en la prueba de Oro de la segunda etapa del Autumn Mediterranean Equestrian Tour, uno de los principales circuitos hípicos a nivel internacional. Unos visualizan los detalles del recorrido, otros estiran, mientras que algunos más se concentran en silencio momentos antes de la competición. A escasos metros de las pistas y montado sobre un patinete eléctrico de última generación llega Jérôme Guéry, que con una sonrisa entrañable pide disculpas por el retraso –apenas ha pasado un minuto de las doce, hora a la que nos habíamos citado–. “Good morning, we have exactly twenty-seven minutes to chat before competing again”, dice el jinete con un marcado acento francés. Este hecho ya nos adelanta muchos rasgos de la personalidad del belga: un hombre constante, perseverante y disciplinado, posiblemente los tres pilares fundamentales del deporte ecuestre.

MAMÁ, QUIERO UN CABALLO Guéry tenía diez años cuando subió por primera vez a una silla de montar. Los miércoles por la tarde acompañaba a su niñera a la escuela de equitación y, sin duda, fue amor a primera vista, ya que en ese preciso momento supo que haría todo lo posible por conseguir tener una carrera en la hípica al más alto nivel posible. “Un día, cuando apenas tenía diez años, acompañé a mi niñera a la escuela de equitación y esa misma noche terminé rogándole a mi madre que, por favor, me apuntara a clases de equitación para mi cumpleaños”, afirma el jinete.

Su familia, que no se había aproximado nunca a este deporte, siempre le ha brindado un apoyo inquebrantable. Tanto es así que su madre decidió regalarle un pony, que luego vendió para comprarse un caballo. “Mi carrera comenzó de manera atípica, porque a esa edad los demás jinetes ya llevaban mucho tiempo montando. Esto me obligó a compensar

ese tiempo de ventaja observando y analizando a grandes personalidades como Pessoa, a quien tuve la suerte de conocer”.

A los dieciocho años dejó la casa familiar para marcharse a vivir a Les Hayettes, donde tuvo la oportunidad de participar en sus primeras competiciones y aprender la profesión. Allí conoció a Patricia, la mujer que se convertiría en su esposa tiempo después. Como él, era una absoluta apasionada de los caballos y la equitación y no dudó en dejar su puesto de trabajo como abogada para embarcarse juntos en el gran proyecto de su vida: regentar su propio establo.

SU MAYOR RETO En 2016 Guéry participó en los Juegos Olímpicos de verano en Río de Janeiro, Brasil, donde terminó vigesimoctavo en la competición individual con el caballo Grand Cru van de Rozenberg. En los Juegos Olímpicos de verano 2020, celebrados en Tokio, Jérôme fue miembro del equipo belga en la competición de salto por equipos –compuesto también por Devos y Wathelet–. El equipo quedó en tercera posición, otorgando a Bélgica su primera medalla ecuestre desde los Juegos Olímpicos de verano de 1976.

“Las Olimpiadas de Tokio fueron un auténtico sueño para mí. La preparación fue un camino largo, no precisamente de rosas, con muchas subidas y bajadas, pero se convirtió en una experiencia que no cambiaría por nada del mundo. Tener la oportunidad de estar con los mejores y mejorar mi rendimiento mientras competía con ellos fue una sensación increíble”. Considerado como uno de los mejores jinetes belgas, Jérôme afirma que “durante los últimos diez años se me ha reconocido como uno de los cincuenta mejores jinetes del mundo y en la categoría masculina estoy dentro de los diez primeros. La vida ha sido muy generosa conmigo y estoy tremendamente agradecido por todo lo que me ha pasado”.

Y, ante este abrumador reconocimiento, la siguiente pregunta surge casi sola: ¿dónde radica el éxito? “Trabajo, trabajo y más trabajo. Y muchísima pasión.

Monto a caballo un mínimo de seis horas diarias, hago estiramientos todas las semanas y voy al gimnasio prácticamente todos los días, todo para mejorar cada vez más mi rendimiento”.

e are located in the Oliva Nova Equestrian Centre, specifically between the Valencia and the Oliva riding tracks. Around, more than thirty riders are preparing with their horses to participate in the Gold test of the second stage of the Autumn Mediterra0nean Equestrian Tour, one of the leading international equestrian circuits. Some visualize the details of the course, others do stretching, while others concentrate in silence moments before the competition.

A few meters from the arenas and riding on a state-of-the-art electric scooter arrives Jérôme Guéry, who with an endearing smile apologizes for the delay - it’s barely a minute past noon, the time we arranged to meet. “Good morning, we have exactly twenty-seven minutes to chat before competing again”, says the rider in a thick French accent. This fact already gives us many traits of his Belgian’s personality: a constant, persevering and disciplined man, possibly the three fundamental pillars of equestrian sport.

MOM, I WANT A HORSE Guéry was ten years old when he got into the saddle for the first time. On Wednesday afternoons, he would accompany his nanny to the riding school, and it was love at first sight, as he knew right then and there that he would do everything he could to pursue a career in riding at the highest possible level. “One day, when I was just ten years old, I accompanied my nanny to the riding school, and that same night I ended up begging my mother to please sign me up for riding lessons for my birthday, says the rider. His family, who had never been close to that sport before, have always given him unwavering

support. So much so that his mother decided to give him a pony, which he later sold to buy a horse.

“My career started in an atypical way because, at that age, other riders had already been riding for a long time. This fact forced me to make up for that time they were ahead of me by observing and analyzing great personalities like Pessoa, whom I had the good fortune to meet”. At the age of eighteen, he left the family home to go and live in Les Hayettes, where he had the opportunity to take part in his first competitions and learn the profession. There he met Patricia, the woman who would later become his wife. Like him, she was passionate about horses and riding and did not hesitate to leave her job as a lawyer to embark together on the great project of her life: running their own stable.

THEIR BIGGEST CHALLENGE In 2016 Guéry participated in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he finished 28th in the individual competition with the horse Grand Cru van de Rozenberg. At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Jérôme was a member of the Belgian team in the team jumping competition - also consisting of Devos and Wathelet. The team came third, giving Belgium its first equestrian medal since the 1976 Summer Olympics. “The Tokyo Olympics were a real dream for me. The preparation was a long road and not exactly a bed of roses, with many ups and downs, but it became an experience that I would not change for anything in the world. Having the opportunity to be with the best and improve my performance while competing with them was an incredible feeling. Considered one of the best Belgian riders, Jérôme says that “for the last ten years I have been recognized as one of the fifty best riders in the world and in the men’s category I am in the top ten”. Life has been very generous to me, and I am tremendously grateful for everything that has happened to me”. And, in the face of this overwhelming recognition, the next question arises almost by itself: where does success lie?

Work, work, and more work. And a lot of passion. I ride a minimum of six hours a day; I do stretching every week and go to the gym almost every day, all to improve my performance more and more”.

Estamos en el mes de noviembre, pero el clima es suave, azulado y el sol reina en el cielo de Oliva Nova. Preguntamos al jinete si este ambiente es habitual en el resto de competiciones: “Las condiciones meteorológicas son espectaculares en Oliva Nova. Precisamente esta es una de las principales razones por las que mi familia y yo decidimos venir cada invierno a competir en el Mediterranean Equestrian Tour”. ¿Y qué puede contarnos sobre su participación en esta competición? Continuamos. “Como te comentaba, a mi familia y a mí nos encanta participar en esta competición cada año. El Mediterranean Equestrian Tour es uno de los principales circuitos hípicos a nivel internacional, donde se reúnen jinetes y amazonas de primer nivel y grandes deportistas de élite. Supone una oportunidad importante para poder entrenar con mis caballos más jóvenes, ejemplares muy prometedores. Además, el escenario en el que se ubica el centro ecuestre es realmente perfecto y se presenta como el mejor contexto para hacer competiciones de alto nivel”.

Y no es de extrañar, porque tanto si eres amante de la hípica como si vas a disfrutar de este deporte por primera vez, es imposible que este espacio te deje indiferente. Con nueve pistas de arena, trescientos ochenta boxes permanentes, espacio para montar más de seiscientos boxes portables, restaurantes, bares, zona comercial y a escasos quinientos metros de distancia a la playa, el Centro Ecuestre Oliva Nova se sitúa a la misma altura de los centros más importantes del panorama internacional, convirtiéndolo en un entorno único en el que disfrutar de esta disciplina. “Quedé tan absolutamente fascinado con este complejo que decidí comprar una casa aquí. Son muchas las razones que me llevaron a ello. Al fin y al cabo, vengo entre nueve y doce semanas al año con mis caballos y tener una vivienda pro-

pia aquí me permite disfrutar realmente de mis caballos y del deporte con ellos”.

Hablamos sobre si sigue alguna rutina durante las semanas que se asienta en Oliva Nova y responde que le encanta “levantarme temprano y calentar un poco.

Cada mañana me dirijo al establo para comprobar que todos mis caballos están en perfecto estado y para comentar el plan del día con mis mozos. Después, aprovecho para montar alguno de mis ejemplares por la playa, porque es muy bueno para ellos y ayuda a reforzar la relación entre hombre-caballo”. Claro. Qué importante esto. No podemos olvidar que la equitación es un arte sumamente delicado y que es la única disciplina deportiva en la que el hombre tiene que lidiar con el animal, por lo que la conexión debe ser espectacular entre ellos.

“Para calificarte como un buen jinete tienes que respetar a tu caballo y entender cómo está en cada momento. Para conseguirlo, necesitas tener verdaderamente una buena conexión con él. A menudo lo olvidamos, pero montar es sentarse sobre otro ser vivo. Un ser vivo que tiene su carácter, sus estados de ánimo…

Un excelente jinete debe hacer creer a su caballo que es él y solo él quien decide”.

La alarma de su teléfono móvil nos interrumpe. Los veintisiete minutos de los que disponía para concedernos la entrevista han concluido. Guéry se disculpa y explica que debe marcharse a buscar a Margriet de Mariposa, la yegua nacida en 2012 con la que va a competir en poco menos de una hora.

Y se marcha tal y como ha llegado: sobre su patinete eléctrico.

BY THE SEA As he utters these words, Guéry unbuttons the cuffs of his shirt and begins to roll them up to his elbows carefully. We are in November, but the weather is mild, bluish, and the sun reigns in the sky of Oliva Nova.

We asked the rider if this atmosphere is usual in the rest of the competitions: “The weather conditions are spectacular in Oliva Nova.”

This is precisely one of the main reasons why my family and I decided to come every winter to compete in the Mediterranean Equestrian Tour”.

And what can you tell us about your participation in this competition?

We continue. “As I was saying, my family and I love to participate in this competition every year.” The Mediterranean Equestrian Tour is one of the leading international equestrian circuits, where top riders and elite sportsmen and women meet. It is a significant opportunity to training with my youngest horses, and they are up-and-coming horses. In addition, the scenario in which the equestrian centre is located is perfect and is presented as the best context to make high-level competitions.

And it is not surprising, because whether you are a lover of horse riding as if you are going to enjoy this sport for the first time, this space will never leave you indifferent. It has nine sand rings, three hundred and eighty permanent boxes, room to set up more than six hundred portable boxes, restaurants, bars, and a shopping area. And at just five hundred metres from the beach, the Oliva Nova Equestrian Centre is on a par with the most important centres on the international scene, making it a unique environment in which to enjoy this

discipline. “I was so absolutely fascinated by this complex that I decided to buy a house here.” Many are the reasons that led me to it... After all, I come here for nine to twelve weeks a year with my horses and having my own place here allows me to enjoy the sport with them.”We talked about if he follows any routine during the weeks he settles in Oliva Nova, and he answers that he loves to “get up early and warm up a little bit... Every morning I go to the stable to check that all my horses are in perfect condition and discuss the day’s plan with my grooms. Afterwards, I take the opportunity to ride some of my horses on the beach, because it is very good for them and helps to strengthen the relationship between man and horse”.

Of course. How important this is! We should not forget that horse riding is a highly delicate art and that it is the only sporting discipline in which man has to deal with the animal, so the connection between them must be astounding.

“To qualify as a good rider, you have to respect your horse and understand how he is at any given moment.” And to get it, you need to have an excellent connection with him. We often forget, but riding is sitting on another living being. A living being that has its character, its moods ... An excellent rider must make his horse believe that it is he and only he who decides”. The alarm on his mobile phone interrupts us. The twenty-seven minutes he had to grant us the interview are over.

Guéry apologizes and explains that he has to leave to look for Margriet de Mariposa, the mare born in 2012 with whom he will compete in just under an hour. And he leaves just as he arrived: on his electric scooter.

a localidad valenciana de Oliva fue el lugar escogido para celebrar el pasado 31 de octubre la primera edición de la 10K Oliva Nova Run & Golf, organizada por Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort con la colaboración de Atlos Eventos. La particularidad de esta cita deportiva es su trazado, hasta ahora inédito, ya que es la primera vez que una carrera de estas características transcurre a lo largo de un campo de golf y apenas a unos metros de la orilla del mar Mediterráneo.

Así lo destacaba Pablo Borho, director de marketing de Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort: “Los diez kilómetros transcurren por los terrenos de la urbanización Oliva Nova –explicaba–, y seis de ellos lo hacen

dentro del campo de golf. El trazado lo ha diseñado la compañía Atlos, líder en la organización de eventos deportivos, en busca de la comodidad del corredor y disfrutando de las vistas privilegiadas del campo de golf”. Y por lo que sucedió durante la jornada atlética, se alcanzaron los objetivos. “Nuestras expectativas para esta edición era llegar a los 500 corredores –afirmaba Borho–, y hemos tenido 900 inscritos, lo que para nosotros es un éxito absoluto”.

Además de su novedoso recorrido, suscitó el interés general la participación del deportista Chema Martínez, considerado como uno de los mejores fondistas españoles de todos los tiempos gracias, entre otros logros, a su medalla de oro en el campeonato europeo de Atletismo en Múnich 2002 y su plata en Goteborg. Para Chema,

el trazado de la 10k no es una novedad, ya que lleva varios años disfrutando de las vacaciones y periodos de descanso con su familia en Oliva Nova. El atleta, por lo demás, ganó la competición con un tiempo de 33:45, mientras que la deportista Rosa María Lara hizo lo propio en la categoría femenina con un tiempo de 39:25.

“Las primeras ediciones son siempre complicadas, pero a la vez emocionantes porque vives la adrenalina de lo nuevo”, manifestaba el atleta nada más proclamarse ganador de la 10k Oliva Nova. “Ha salido todo perfecto”, explicaba, y respecto a Andreu, un corredor local de nivel, le señaló como “un buen rival” aunque “hay que estar muy fuerte para ganarme y por suerte todavía estoy en forma”, afirmaba.

zona del Mediterráneo durante la primera mitad del otoño, así como las características técnicas y ambientales del propio resort Oliva Nova: “Este fin de semana en Madrid estaba lloviendo y aquí hace un clima increíble –remarcaba–; además, contamos con el entorno, el mar, la gastronomía… Me ha sorprendido el número de participantes de la prueba y la profesionalidad mostrada por la organización para ser una primera edición”.

Tanto los corredores como la organización coincidieron en que la prueba había sido un éxito. Los portavoces de Oliva Nova afirmaban su deseo de consolidar una carrera que por la combinación del entorno y las características del trazado, así como por la fecha escogida, ha sido muy bien recibida y promete convertirse en una de las citas ineludibles del atletismo valenciano.

The 10K Oliva Nova Run & Golf becomes one of the great athletic events of the year

ne of the peculiarities of the new race organised by Oliva Nova is that it runs through a golf course, combining paved and grass sections for the first time, which makes it a unique and attractive race for athletes.

Oliva’s Valencian town was chosen to celebrate the first edition of the 10K Oliva Nova Run & Golf, organised by Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort with the collaboration of Atlos Eventos., on October 31st. The particularity of this sporting event is its route, so far unprecedented, as it is the first time that a race of this kind runs along a golf course and just a few meters from the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. This was highlighted by Pablo Borho, marketing director of Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort: “The full ten kilometers run through the grounds of the Oliva Nova urbanisation -he explained-, and six of them are within the golf course.. The route has been designed by the company Atlos, leader in the organisation of sporting events, looking for the comfort of the runner and enjoying the privileged views of the golf course”. And from what happened during the athletic day, the goals were achieved. “Our expectations for this edition were to reach 500 runners - Borho affirmed-, and we have had 900 registered runners, which for us is an absolute success”.

In addition to its novel route, the participation of athlete Chema Martínez, who is considered one of the best Spanish long-distance runners of all time, aroused general interest. He, among other achievements, won his gold medal in the European Athletics Championships in Munich 2002 and his silver medal in Göteborg. For Chema, the route of the 10K race is nothing new, as he has been enjoying his holidays and rest periods with his family in Oliva Nova for several years. The athlete won the competition with a time of 33:45, while athlete Rosa Maria Lara did the same in the female category with a time of 39:25.

Runners and organisers agreed that the race had been a success.

Alberto Contador sobre ruedas por Oliva Nova Las avenidas de Oliva Nova se pusieron a pedalear para recibir a una leyenda del ciclismo español como es Alberto Contador, ganador de las tres grandes: Giro de Italia, Tour de Francia y Vuelta a España. paco lloret

a competición TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador cumplió su décimo año y el cuarto en tierras valencianas. Esta edición congregó a más de tres mil ciclistas, tanto españoles como europeos, cuya motivación era pedalear al lado de un mito ciclista con acento español. La prueba sobre ruedas ofreció al participante dos recorridos: un Gran Fondo de 162 km y más de 3.000 metros de desnivel acumulado, y un Medio Fondo de 111 km y más de 1.900 metros de desnivel. Los recorridos comenzaron a las 8 y 9:30 de la mañana con salida en Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort. Los allí congregados miraban al cielo con preocupación debido a la inclemencia meteorológica. Por suerte, tras recorrer los primeros kilómetros de la carrera, el cielo se despejó y pudieron disfrutar de una jornada soleada, lo clásico en esta zona del Mediterráneo.

De entre los participantes destacaron ciclistas como Vicente Quiles, Asier Irigoyen o Darío Gadeo, quien, con un tiempo de 04:40:53, se convirtió en el ganador, al igual que en la pasada edición.

La primera en cruzar la línea de meta en la categoría femenina fue la ciclista Inge Van Den Broeck con un tiempo de

05:37:18. La segunda y tercera posición fueron para Pilar Mansilla y Olga Planells, respectivamente. En los tramos cronometrados en el Mirador del Xap, Darío Gadeo logró un tiempo de 00:12:01, mientras que en la categoría femenina la más rápida fue Maaike Van Der Plas de Groot con 00:18:16.

En el trascurso de la carrera, Alberto Contador acaparó todas las miradas. El deportista cruzó la línea de meta rozando casi las 6 horas. Tras la prueba, se mostró muy feliz: “Ha sido un desafío enorme y la nota es muy alta, esto significa que estamos acercándonos a la normalidad y que poco a poco la marcha crecerá”. El director de la prueba, Xisco Lliteras, también se sumó a las palabras de Contador: “Teníamos un gran objetivo que era volver aquí, lo hemos hecho y lo hemos disfrutado. Es trabajo de todo el equipo y estamos seguros de que la TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador va a ser una de las grandes de Europa”.

La carrera se convirtió en una agradable jornada donde se disfrutó del deporte, del paisaje y de las buenas relaciones entre los participantes, quienes a su paso por línea de meta, tardasen lo que tardasen, recibieron una medalla como finishers y recuperaron fuerzas con un buen aperitivo en el complejo Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort.

he avenues of Oliva Nova were set to pedal to welcome a Spanish cycling legend such as Alberto Contador, winner of the three great ones: Giro of Italy, Tour de France and Vuelta to Spain..

The TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador competition completed its tenth year and the fourth in Valencia. This edition brought together more than three thousand Spanish and European cyclists whose motivation was to pedal alongside a cycling legend with a Spanish accent.

The race on wheels offered the participant two routes: a Gran Fondo (Long Distance) of 162 km and more than 3,000 meters of accumulated elevation gain, and a Medio Fondo (Middledistance) of 111 km and more than 1,900 meters of elevation gain. The rounds began at 8 and 9:30 a.m., starting at Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort. Those gathered there looked at the sky with concern due to adverse weather conditions. Fortunately, after the first few kilometres of the race, the skies cleared, and they were able to enjoy a sunny day, a classic in this area of the Mediterranean.

Among the participants were cyclists such as Vicente Quiles, Asier Irigoyen or Darío Gadeo, who, with a time of 04:40:53, became the winner, as he also did in the last edition. The first to cross the finish line in the women’s category was cyclist Inge Van Den Broeck, who clocked a time of 05:37:18. The second and third positions went to Pilar Mansilla and Olga Planells.

In the timed sections at the Mirador del Xap, Dario Gadeo made a time of 00:12:01, while in the women’s category, the fastest was Maaike Van Der Plas de Groot with a time of 00:18:16.

During the race, Alberto Contador was the centre of attention. The athlete crossed the finish line in almost 6 hours. After the race, he was thrilled: “It has been a huge challenge as our aims are rather ambitious; this means that we are getting closer to normality and that little by little, the event will grow.” The director of the race, Xisco Lliteras, also added to Contador’s words: “We had a big goal which was to come back here, we did it, and we enjoyed it. It is the work of the whole team, and we are sure that the TotalEnergies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador will be one of the biggest cycling races in Europe”.

The race turned into a pleasant day to enjoy the sport, the scenery and the good relations among the participants. At the finish line, no matter how long it took, they received a medal as finishers and were treated to a tasty snack served at the Oliva Nova Beach & Golf Resort to regain their strength.

Si al principio te resulta muy complicado, puedes empezar por concentrar la atención en un objeto específico, una imagen o incluso en la respiración.

’m sure you’ve heard of meditation, a relaxation and stress reduction technique that has been associated with the practice of yoga for years.

But, did you know that it can also be beneficial for any other sport?

Meditation is a mental exercise with which, through attention, we train our mind to bring it to a state of peace and calm. To achieve its benefits, it requires practice and a learning process for which we will need different resources, techniques and tools.

Why is meditation necessary?. By having our minds active all the time, we are constantly assaulted by different positive and negative thoughts, even leading us to unpleasant emotional states. The purpose of meditation is to calm our minds and learn how to live with those thoughts without letting them control our daily life.

If you practice sports, you will know that it is essential to control everything happening inside your head in sports performance. Both in training and competitions, all the things we think can play tricks on us and cause a decrease in our performance. We can help focus attention, improve stress levels, and even combat the fear of injury through meditation. We could consider it also as a motivational tool for the athlete.

What is needed for meditation practice? One of the most positive aspects of meditation is that it can be done at any time and almost anywhere.

The most important thing is to understand that it is normal for your attention and mind to wander

during practice, and therefore we should allow those thoughts to pass through our awareness without being judged.

Once you know the technique of meditation and how it can help your athletic performance, it only remains to experiment and discover that there is no right or wrong way to meditate, the only important thing is to do it in the way that best suits your body and mind.

- A quiet place. If you are a beginner, practising meditation will be easier in a peaceful setting with few distractions.

Little by little, you will be able to do it at any place.

- A comfortable position. You can practice meditation sitting, lying down, walking, in other positions or during activities.

- Focus attention. This is the most crucial element of meditation, for it is what helps to free the mind from the many distractions that cause stress and worry. If you find it too difficult at first, you can start by focusing your attention on a specific object, an image, or even your breathing.

- Relaxed breathing. This technique involves deep, even breaths, using the diaphragm to expand the lungs. The purpose is to slow down breathing, receive more oxygen, and reduce the use of shoulder, neck, and upper chest muscles when breathing.

Al igual que no concebimos hacer ejercicio físico sin calentar previamente, tampoco deberíamos exponer nuestra piel a un entrenamiento intenso sin realizar una rutina de cuidado facial adecuada. Las necesidades de la piel cambian en función del momento del día en el que entrenemos y es importante adaptar nuestra rutina a ellas.

El paso fundamental para mantener la piel sana cuando hacemos deporte, y el que se repite en todas las rutinas, es la limpieza. Con independencia del

momento del día en el que entrenes, es imprescindible limpiar el rostro antes y después de realizar ejercicio. ¿Por qué?

Porque el sudor provoca alteraciones en la piel como el aumento de la producción de sebo o el debilitamiento de la función barrera, lo que aumenta el riesgo de deshidratación. Además, al sudar, los poros se dilatan, favoreciendo la penetración de la suciedad y, con ella, aumentan las probabilidades de que los poros se obstruyan y aparezcan los indeseables granitos y espinillas.

Estas son las rutinas faciales pre y post entrenamiento que deberías seguir según el momento del día en el que entrenes. ¡Toma nota!

ENTRENAMIENTO AM Si entrenas a primera hora del día, empieza tu rutina limpiándote el rostro con un jabón adaptado a las necesidades de tu piel para eliminar el exceso de grasa que ha producido durante la noche. Si tienes la piel seca o deshidratada, puedes aplicar una crema hidratante ligera para que la piel esté elástica y confortable. Si tu piel no necesita este extra de hidratación, con la limpieza facial es suficiente. Cuando termines tu entrenamiento, vuelve a limpiar la piel para eliminar la suciedad y los restos de sudor y aplica tu rutina facial de día. Entre los productos que han de componerla debería haber un buen sérum antioxidante, una crema hidratante y, por supuesto, una crema solar con factor de protección alto.

ENTRENAMIENTO AL MEDIODÍA. Si eres de los que prefieren entrenar a mediodía sigue los siguientes pasos: desmaquíllate –si lo estás–, limpia la piel del rostro con tu gel habitual y aplica una crema hidratante ligera.

Como habrás aplicado la rutina de día a primera hora de la mañana y tu piel ya habrá absorbido los activos cosméticos, no es necesario que vuelvas a aplicar todos los productos tras finalizar el entrenamiento. Es suficiente con que apliques tu crema hidratante y un protector solar de amplio espectro que te proteja frente a los rayos UVA y UVB.

ENTRENAMIENTO PM. Si optas por entrenar a última hora del día, desmaquíllate y limpia la piel del rostro antes de comenzar para eliminar la suciedad, la polución y la grasa acumulada a lo largo del día.

Para que tu piel se vuelva confortable puedes aplicar una crema hidratante ligera. Una vez terminada la sesión de ejercicio, vuelve a limpiar la piel y aprovecha para aplicar una rutina cosmética basada en activos que favorezcan el proceso de regeneración celular que tiene lugar en nuestra piel por la noche.

Por último, si vas a entrenar en el exterior, no debes olvidar aplicar un protector solar de amplio espectro que proteja tu piel de la radiación solar. Si, además, el entrenamiento se va a prolongar durante varias horas, es importante que lo reapliques cada dos para mantener un nivel óptimo de protección, ya que el sudor puede reflejar los rayos solares y aumentar la incidencia del daño solar, disminuyendo, por tanto, la acción del protector.

Sport has become an essential part of our daily lives.

Just as we can’t conceive of doing physical exercise or sport without warming up beforehand, we shouldn’t expose our skin to an intense workout without a proper skincare routine. The needs of our skin change according to the times of day we train, and it is crucial to adapt our skincare routine to them.

The fundamental step to keep healthy skin when we do sport, and just the one repeated in all routines, is cleansing.

No matter what time of day you train, it’s essential to cleanse your face before and after exercising. And why?

Because sweating causes alterations in your skin, such as increased sebum production or a weakening of the barrier function, which increases the risk of dehydration. In addition, when sweating, your pores dilate, allowing dirt to penetrate, which increases the likelihood of clogged pores and the appearance of unwanted pimples and blackheads.

These are the pre- and post- workout facial routines you should follow according to the time of day you train. Pay attention to this!

AM TRAINING If you train first thing in the morning, start your routine by cleansing your face with a soap adapted to your skin’s needs to remove the excess oil it has produced during the night. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, you can apply a light moisturiser to keep your skin supple and comfortable.

Facial cleansing is enough if your skin does not need this extra hydration. Once you finish your workout, cleanse your skin again to remove dirt and sweat and apply your daytime facial routine. It should be formulated with ingredients such as a good antioxidant serum, a moisturiser and, of course, a sunscreen with a high protection factor.

NOON WORKOUT If you are one of those, who prefer to train at midday, follow these steps: remove your make-up -if you use it-, clean the skin of your face with your usual gel and apply a light moisturiser. Since you will have applied the daytime routine in the morning and your skin will have already absorbed the active cosmetic ingredients, there is no need to reapply all the products after your workout. All you need to do is apply your moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect you from UVA and UVB radiations.

PM TRAINING If you choose to train late in the day, remove your makeup and cleanse your face before you start training to remove any dirt, pollution and oil accumulated throughout the day. To make your skin comfortable, you can apply a light moisturiser. Once the gym or sports session is over, cleanse your skin again and take the opportunity to use a cosmetic routine based on active cosmetic ingredients that promote the cell regeneration process that takes place in our skin at night.

Finally, if you’re going to train outdoors, don’t forget to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from solar radiation. Suppose you are going to be training for several hours. a palabra menú procede del latín minutus –que significa pequeño– y sus orígenes se remontan a la Edad Media, cuando los comensales nobles escogían entre una amplia lista de platos según sus apetencias en el Consejo de Condes.

Hoy en día sabemos que fue Enrique de Brunswick quien en el año 1849 comenzó a redactar cartas –incluso aventurándose a maridar platos con vinos–. Es entonces cuando empezaron a colgar pergaminos escritos a mano con la oferta gastronómica del día en lugares tan importantes como el restaurante Palais Royal de París. Por esta razón, nos gusta pensar en la idea de que elaborar un menú gastronómico es como escribir una carta de amor al oficio.

Gracias a su cocina, y también al trabajo de un equipo de sala impecable, los comensales viajan a través de un mundo de sabores pegados a la tierra pero sin perder ese toque de belleza que hace de la cocina de Vicens un derroche visual. e spoke with Alonso Vicens, executive chef of Oliva Nova about gastronomy, local products and culinary innovation.

The word ‘menu’ comes from the Latin ‘minutus’ -meaning small- and its origins date back to the Middle Ages when noble diners chose from a long list of dishes according to their tastes at the Council of Counts. Today we know that it was Henry of Brunswick who around 1541 began to write menus -even

venturing to pair dishes with wines-.

conservan todas sus propiedades intactas y contribuyen a obtener los nutrientes, vitaminas y minerales que nuestro cuerpo necesita. Los productos de temporada, además, siempre tienen un mejor aspecto, aroma y sabor, lo que provoca que nos resulten más apetecibles y, por tanto, sea mucho más sencillo integrarlos en nuestra dieta. Con el frío, por ejemplo, llega el tiempo de las setas, una joya de la naturaleza que cada vez cuenta con un mayor número de adeptos. Basta con recorrer estos días los campos, bosques y montes más cercanos de nuestro territorio para ver la inmensa riqueza

micológica con la que contamos. “Con el comienzo del otoño llega la época de los hongos. Este año la temporada no está siendo del todo fructífera debido a la escasez de lluvias, lo que ha impedido que proliferen los hongos más codiciados, como los níscalos, las setas de cardo o, sobre todo, los boletus. Sin embargo, en nuestros restaurantes ya hemos hecho buen acopio de estos productos de temporada para ofrecer a los comensales platos con las setas y los hongos como protagonistas, como por ejemplo una parmentier de patata con huevo poché, níscalos y jamón ibérico”, cuenta Vicens.

Pero si hay una reina indiscutible durante esta temporada es, sin ninguna duda, la

Su gran polivalencia la hace capaz de formar parte de guisos, pero también de freírlas, de asarlas o de marcarlas a la plancha. Todo ello sin olvidar una de las estrellas de la restauración, las alcachofas confitadas: “una de las formas más deliciosas de preparar alcachofas es confitadas. A fuego lento y durante un tiempo prolongado, esta verdura se convierte en un auténtico lujo para el paladar”, cuenta el chef.

EL PLATO ESTRELLA: ALCACHOFAS CON AJOBLANCO Como no podía ser de otra manera, no hay restaurante que se precie que estos días no incluya en su menú, al menos, un plato en el que las alcachofas ocupen un lugar destacado: “Una vez pruebas las alcachofas confitadas ya no quieres comerlas de ninguna otra manera; esta temporada en nuestra carta las estamos preparando acompañadas de un ajoblanco y están siendo un éxito absoluto”, afirma Vicens. El gran secreto para elaborar este plato radica en el confitado que debe realizarse previamente: “cubrimos

las alcachofas con aceite de oliva virgen extra y las cocemos a fuego lento durante dos horas. Después, empleamos el mismo aceite para freírlas a 180 grados”, explica el chef. Se considera que la alcachofa es la verdura invernal por excelencia y que ninguna otra puede superar ni su sabor ni su textura, por lo que podrían perfectamente consumirse tal cual, sin ningún tipo de acompañamiento. Sin embargo, esta temporada en el restaurante Ocean’s han decidido añadirle un ajoblanco: “Para aportarle un toque de sabor extra a esta elaboración, acompañamos las alcachofas confitadas con un ajoblanco de almendra marcona que regamos

SEASONAL PRODUCE It is common knowledge that seasonal produce is healthier, as they have not been subjected to artificial ripening treatments. That is how they keep all their properties intact and contribute to getting the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that our body needs. Seasonal produce, moreover, always look, smell and taste better, which makes them more appealing and, therefore, much easier to integrate into our diet. Autumn, for example, is mushroom season, a gem of nature that has an increasing number of followers. It is enough to walk through the fields in those days, through the forests and mountains closest to our territory, to see the immense wealth of mycological richness that we have.

“With the beginning of autumn comes the time of mushrooms.” This year’s season has not been entirely fruitful due to the lack of rainfall, which has prevented the proliferation of the most coveted mushrooms, such as saffron milk caps and red pine mushrooms, oyster mushrooms or, above all, boletus. However, in our restaurants, we have already made good use of these seasonal products to offer diners dishes with mushrooms and fungi as protagonists, such as a potato Parmentier served with poached egg, chanterelles and Iberian ham”, says Vicens.

But if there is an undisputed queen during this season is, no doubt, the artichoke. Its crunchy texture, slightly bitter taste and juiciness make it the star of gastronomy in the two seasons when harvested: in the cold months of October to December and during spring. Its outstanding versatility makes them suitable for stews, but fried, roasted or grilled are delicious. All this without forgetting one of the stars of the restaurant business, the confit artichokes: “one of the most delicious ways to prepare artichokes is this one.”

On a low heat over an extended cooking time, this vegetable becomes a real treat for the palate”, says the chef.

THE STAR DISH: ARTICHOKES SERVED ON AJOBLANCO SAUCE How could it be otherwise? No restaurant worth its salt would these days not include in its menu at least one dish in which artichokes feature prominently. “Once you taste confit artichokes, you don’t want to eat artichokes in any other way; this season, we are preparing them in our menu accompanied by an Ajoblanco sauce,

and they are an absolute success”, says Vicens. The great secret to preparing this dish lies in the confit preparation that must be done previously: “we cover the artichokes with extra virgin olive oil and cook them over low heat for two hours.” Then, we use the same oil to fry them at 180 degrees”, explains the chef. Artichoke is considered the quintessential winter vegetable, and no other vegetable can beat its flavour or texture, so it could perfectly well be eaten as is, without any accompaniment.

However, this season at Ocean’s restaurant, they have decided to add an Ajoblanco base. “To add an extra touch of flavour to this dish, we accompany the confit artichokes with an Ajoblanco

sauce as a base made of Marcona almonds that we drizzle with a little olive oil and a lemon vinaigrette,” concludes Alonso Vicens.

Galician beef sirloin steak tartar served with potato shoestrings; burrata Stracciatella served with cherry confit tomatoes and pine nut praline; tuna tataki served with roasted pepper juice and caper pickle... No matter what you choose. All you have to do is sit down in any of the restaurants that make up the gastronomic offer of Oliva Nova to begin to be part of a parade of dishes and creations that its executive chef has carefully thought out. Al jugar 18 hoyos caminamos de 6 a 7 kilómetros y quemamos unas 1.400 calorías.

La alimentación de los golfistas está directamente relacionada con su rendimiento en el campo, con la recuperación tras la partida y con la prevención de lesiones. Lo que ingerimos, en qué cantidad y cuándo lo hacemos resulta esencial para poder disfrutar del deporte a pleno rendimiento.

El desayuno, cómo no, resulta indispensable para que fructifique la jornada. Tanto si programamos la partida temprano, como si lo hacemos por la tarde o a media mañana. Alimentarnos de manera adecuada en la primera comida del día nos ayudará a esquivar los bunkers y a ascender las calles con energía. Evitaremos desfallecer, la falta de aliento y echar de menos el vigor y la concentración para acometer el golpe preciso cuando llegue el momento.

Antes de una partida competida que no falten los hidratos de carbono. Sobre todo, los de absorción lenta. Prueba con unas sabrosas tostadas untadas con tomate, busca las harinas integrales, cereales como la avena o una buena ración de legumbres aliñadas como lentejas, hummus o beans preparados a la inglesa. Con esta base habremos cargado las pilas para portar la bolsa desde el primer hoyo hasta el último esfuerzo en el green del dieciocho. Pero el

desayuno, en realidad, no podemos darlo por terminado. El golf, no lo olvidemos, es un deporte de fondo si tenemos en cuenta el tiempo que ocupa, la distancia recorrida y la fuerza y la concentración que depositamos en cada golpe.

Otra de las claves: nunca has de renunciar al aceite de oliva, un condimento poderoso que hará que nuestra comida rezume Mediterráneo. Al igual que lo respira el aire, el paisaje y todo el entorno de Oliva Nova. Tus aliados imprescindibles serán los zumos recién exprimidos, la fruta y, por supuesto, una buena porción de proteínas de alto valor biológico, como el jamón curado y los huevos bien cocinados.

No olvides hidratarte de modo permanente. Este tip vale tanto para el desayuno como para todo el esfuerzo físico que reclama el día. Y para ese picoteo ligero entre horas te recomendamos tener a mano frutos secos como almendras, nueces, avellanas, o pistachos. Vamos a pasar más de cinco horas jugando y es importante que no falte la energía.

Todo esto debemos comenzar a planearlo desde bien temprano, en el mismo buffet del hotel o en el restaurante The Golf Club, con espectaculares vistas sobre el campo. Un desayuno glorioso, con todo lo rico y nutritivo que requiere el día mientras ya nos imaginamos en el tee de salida, golpeando duro, entrenando el putt más certero o acompañando al viento con el swing más limpio y académico que jamás haya contemplado el mundo entero. Y parecía que sólo estábamos desayunando.

hose who have been out on the golf course on an empty stomach will know the feeling. The golf course becomes endless, the attention gets dispersed, and we lose accuracy in our strokes. By playing 18 holes, we walk 6 to 7 kilometres and burn about 1,400 calories. The nutrition of golfers is directly related to their performance on the course, recovery after the game and injury prevention. What we eat, how much we eat, and when we eat it are essential to enjoy the sport to the full.

Breakfast, of course, is essential for the day to be fruitful. Whether we schedule the game early, in the afternoon or mid-morning, eating properly at the first meal of the day will help us dodge the bunkers and climb the fairways with energy. We will avoid faintness, shortness of breath and lack of vigour and concentration to strike the right blow when the time comes.

Before a competitive game, do not miss the carbohydrates. Above all, the slow absorption ones. Try some tasty toast spread with tomato, look for wholemeal flours, cereals such as oatmeal or a good portion of seasoned legumes such as lentils, hummus or beans prepared in the English style. Having this as a base will charge our batteries to carry the golf club bag from the first hole to the last effort on the green of the eighteenth.

But breakfast, we can’t call it a day. Golf, let’s not forget, is a long-distance sport if we consider the time it takes, the distance covered, and the strength and concentration we put into each shot.

Another key: never give up olive oil, a powerful seasoning that will make our food ooze Mediterranean. Just like the air, the landscape and the whole environment of Oliva Nova. Your essential allies will be freshly squeezed juices, fruit and, of course, a good portion of high biological value proteins, such as cured ham and well-cooked eggs.

To achieve this, it is necessary to make a good choice of the food we eat and keep a good relationship. Often we are not aware of how this relationship can become harmful, boycotting all our good intentions when making changes in our diet.

The pace of life that we lead does not help us in this relationship with food that has to be harmonious. On more than one occasion, stress and haste have probably led you to eat in front of the computer or television without even realizing it.

We often resort to unhealthy foods that we don’t even enjoy to calm emotions such as sadness, anger, or even reward ourselves. We only use them to mask that emotion that we often confuse with the anxiety of eating or the feeling of hunger.

To improve this relationship, we have tools such as Mindful eating that help us become fully aware when we eat. It is an experience where we put all our senses in the meal and have excellent health benefits. Since our intestine has a connection with our brain, this is reflected in our health.

The practice of a conscious diet will bring us significant help.

Know the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Eating with greater concentration helps our brain to distinguish when we eat because we are hungry (really, what we call physiological hunger) or when we eat because we are bored, sad, or stressed.

La alfarería, el trenzado de fibras como el ratán o el mimbre, y el tejido de alfombras son tres de las actividades artesanales de mayor tradición de la Comunidad Valenciana y hoy, gracias a la puesta en valor de esta tradición, cada vez son más los que deciden apostar por la artesanía como profesión, siguiendo la estela familiar o, en muchos casos, iniciando su propia historia.

MIMBRE, RATÁN Y PALMA Gata de Gorgos, localidad alicantina situada junto al río Gorgos, es la cuna del mobiliario y de los accesorios de mimbre, ratán y palma fabricados siguiendo la tradicional técnica del trenzado. Atravesar este pequeño pueblo por la N-322 es presenciar un auténtico escaparate de artesanía local a ambos lados de la carretera. Los comercios, plantas bajas de viviendas con más de 50 años de historia en la mayoría de casos, se extienden a lo largo de la Plaza de España en una especie de bienvenida a los lugareños y turistas que transitan por la carretera que atraviesa el pueblo.

Craftsmanship is the primary beneficiary of this lifestyle, prioritising quality and good workmanship over immediacy and low prices. Pottery, the weaving of fibres such as rattan or wicker, and carpet weaving are three of the most traditional craft activities in the Valencia Region. Today, thanks to the enhancement of this tradition, more and more people are deciding to take up craftwork as a profession, following in the family footsteps or, in many cases, starting their history.

WICKER, RATTAN AND PALM Gata de Gorgos, an Alicante town located next to the Gorgos River, is the cradle of wicker, rattan and palm furniture and accessories made using the traditional weaving technique. along the Plaza de España in a kind of welcome to the locals and tourists who pass through the road that crosses the village.

Baskets, hats, woodsheds and wicker armchairs are some of the pieces that are exhibited on their façades.

The braiding technique used for its manufacture has been passed down from generation to generation. In the past, such braiding method was used to make baskets to collect the muscatel grape harvest, characteristic of the region, and hats to protect oneself from the sun. The tradition of many such shops was cut short with the arrival of the crisis hitting the world economy in 2008, forcing them to close. Today only about a dozen remain open.

Among these local handicraft companies is a case of international success and modernisation: that of Point, a multinational company from Gata de Gorgos with more than a hundred years of tradition, whose values are craftsmanship, quality and innovative design. It was born in 1920 as a small workshop founded by the grandfather of the current owners when he returned from Argentina, a country where he had to emigrate being a teenager and where he learned the trade. His workshop became a reference in wicker furniture manufacturing at the national and international level, thanks to the quality and innovation of their pieces. This innovation was recognised in 2019 with the National Design Award “for its contribution to improving society and people’s quality of life”.

Although wicker and rattan shops are the stars of Gata de Gorgos, there are also local businesses selling pottery made in Spain. One of them is Cerámicas Monfort, a company founded in 1965 that is currently run by the third generation of the Monfort family. Among their pieces are those made in Manises, the most traditional origin of traditional pottery making.

VALENCIAN POTTERY We cannot talk about ceramic tradition without talking about Manises. Its origin dates 700 years to the 14th century, continuing the Muslim pottery tradition. The local artisans of Manises were inspired by it to produce their characteristic golden, lustrous earthenware, a technique that the Muslims, in turn, inherited from the Persians. From the 14th to the 16th century Manises lived its period of most extraordinary splendour: its production increased exponentially, and it began to export its pieces throughout the Mediterranean.

The exceptional artisan tradition of Manises has been recognised

throughout history. In 1926, Alfonso XIII granted it the title of “Historic and Industrious City”, and on November 8, 2021, UNESCO declared it a “Creative City in Crafts and Popular Arts”.

In addition to Manises, other Valencia’s towns and cities stand out for their ceramic tradition. One of them is Agost, a small pottery village located in the province of Alicante. Only four of the forty potters who lived in this village are left, and they struggle to keep alive a tradition that dates back to the thirteenth century. One of them is La Navà, National Ceramics Award 2018 in “Traditional Ceramics”. The production of this and the rest of the workshops in the area is mainly focused on the botijos (a jug with spout and handle) and the pitchers made of white clay, a material that perfectly keeps the temperature of the water.

Without leaving aside the traditional craftsmanship of yesteryear, ceramic production is reinventing itself.

Beyond these pottery towns and cities, some young people have decided to make crafts as a way of life. Cut, DoManises and Canolab are three examples of young Valencian artisans who have added design and innovation to the crafting process, creating unique ceramic pieces worthy of collectors. And the same thing happens in the hamlet of Jesús Pobre, near Denia, which has a lively Sunday market at the Riu-Rau. In Jesús Pobre we will find workshops such as Defangcuit or Magari (Hopefully!

in Italian), a brand created by Jean Fleche and Angélica Fossemo.

CRAFT CARPETS Also worthy of collectors are the carpets made in Crevillente, a town in Alicante popularly known as ‘the carpet city’. Making these decorative objects is one of the oldest crafts globally: there are samples more than 4,000 years old.

The earliest written reference about their origin in the area dates back to the 15th century in Muslim times.

The tradition survived the Christian conquest and continues to this day.

Production got modernised, and manual looms were left behind with mechanical ones in the 1920s, which boosted the industry. Around the 80s, Crevillente already concentrated 90% of the domestic production of handmade carpets, a figure that remains unchanged today. With its 30,000 inhabitants, this city of Alicante is a leading producer and exporter of rugs in Spain.

The mastery of Crevillente’s artisans is highlighted through a distinctive label called “Alfombras de Crevillente”.

The manufacturers belong to the Association of Carpet and Rug Factories (UNIFAM) and have created a quality guarantee seal to control and guarantee the quality of each carpet manufactured in Crevillente. In addition, the seal can be in three colours depending on the raw material they are made of: green for wool, red for acrylic and blue for polypropylene.

Antaño se utilizaba para fabricar cestas con las que recoger la cosecha de uva moscatel, característica de la región, y sombreros con los que protegerse del sol, productos que siguen fabricándose. La tradición de muchas de estas tiendas se vio truncada con la llegada de la crisis que asoló la economía mundial en 2008, viéndose obligadas a cerrar. Hoy solo permanecen abiertas alrededor de una decena.

Entre estas empresas de artesanía local existe un caso de éxito internacional y modernización: la multinacional Point, una empresa gatagorguense con más de cien años de tradición cuyos valores son la artesanía, la calidad y el diseño innovador. Nació en 1920 como un pequeño taller fundado por el abuelo de los actuales propietarios al volver de Argentina, país al que tuvo que emigrar cuando era un adolescente y en el que aprendió el oficio. Su taller se convirtió en un referente de fabricación de muebles de mimbre a nivel nacional e internacional gracias a la calidad e innovación de sus piezas. Esta innovación fue reconocida en 2019 con el Premio Nacional de Diseño “por su contribución a la mejora de la sociedad y de la calidad de vida de las personas”.

Aunque las tiendas de mimbre y ratán son las protagonistas de Gata de Gorgos, también encontramos negocios locales que venden alfarería made in Spain. Una de ellas es Cerámicas Monfort, un negocio fundado en 1965 que, en la actualidad, está regentado por la tercera generación de los Monfort. Entre sus piezas destacan las fabricadas en Manises, cuna de la elaboración tradicional de cerámica.

CERÁMICA VALENCIANA No podemos hablar de tradición cerámica sin hablar de Manises.

Su origen se remonta 700 años atrás, al siglo XIV, como una continuación de la tradición alfarera musulmana. En ella se inspiraron los artesanos locales maniseros para elaborar su característica loza dorada, de reflejo metálico, una técnica que los musulmanes, a su vez, heredaron de los persas. Del siglo XIV al XVI Manises vivió su época de mayor esplendor: su producción aumentó exponencialmente y comenzó a exportar sus piezas a través del Mediterráneo.

situado en la provincia de Alicante. De los cuarenta alfareros que vivieron en este pueblo solo quedan cuatro, quienes luchan por mantener viva una tradición que se remonta al siglo XIII. Uno de ellos es La Navà, Premio Nacional de Cerámica 2018 en la categoría “Cerámica Tradicional”. La producción de este y el resto de talleres de la zona se centra principalmente en los botijos y en los cántaros hechos de barro blanco, un material que mantiene a la perfección la temperatura del agua.

Sin dejar a un lado la tradición artesanal de antaño, la producción cerámica se está reinventado. Más allá de estos pueblos y ciudades alfareras, aparecen jóvenes que deciden apostar por la artesanía como forma de vida. Cuit, DoManises y Canolab son tres ejemplos de jóvenes artesanos valencianos que han añadido el diseño y la innovación al proceso artesanal consiguiendo crear piezas cerámicas únicas,

dignas de coleccionista. Y lo mismo ocurre en la pedanía dianense de Jesús Pobre, dinamizada por su mercadillo dominical del Riu-Rau. En Jesús Pobre encontraremos talleres como el Defangcuit o Magari (¡Ojalá! en italiano), marca creada por Jean Fleche y Angélica Fossemo.

ALFOMBRAS ARTESANAS También son dignas de coleccionista las alfombras fabricadas en Crevillente, localidad alicantina popularmente conocida como ‘la ciudad de la alfombra’. La confección de estos objetos decorativos es uno de los oficios más antiguos del mundo: existen muestras de más de 4.000 años de antigüedad.

Los primeros escritos sobre su origen en la zona datan del siglo XV, en la época árabe. La tradición sobrevivió a la conquista cristiana y continúo hasta nuestros días.

La producción se modernizó y los telares manuales quedaron atrás con la aparición

de los mecánicos en los años 20 del siglo pasado, que supusieron un gran impulso para la industria. Alrededor de los años 80, Crevillente ya concentraba el 90% de la producción nacional de alfombras artesanales, cifra que se mantiene en la actualidad. Con sus 30.000 habitantes, esta ciudad alicantina se sitúa como el principal productor y exportador de alfombras de toda España.

La maestría de los artesanos crevillentinos se destaca a través de un sello distintivo llamado “Alfombras de Crevillente”.

Una garantía de calidad creada por la Asociación de fábricas de Alfombras y Moquetas (UNIFAM), a la que pertenecen los fabricantes, con el objetivo de controlar y garantizar la calidad de cada alfombra fabricada en Crevillente. Además, el sello puede ser de tres colores en función de la materia prima de la que estén hechas: verde para las de lana, rojo para las acrílicas y azul para las de polipropileno.

unque el origen de los cítricos se sitúa en las zonas subtropicales de la China, al sur del Himalaya, los expertos distinguen hasta cuatro familias primigenias, los cítricos ancestrales: Maxima (la línea genérica de los pomelos), Medica (cidras que toman su nombre de Media, la región de los medos en la antigua Persia), Micrantha (progenitor del yuzu, la lima kaffir y otras variedades) y Reticulata (mandarinas). De estas parten todas las variedades conocidas a través de procesos de hibridación, casi todos ellos naturales, pues esa es una de las características biológicas de los cítricos, su constante evolutiva.

La naranja, el limón, la mandarina, el pomelo, la lima... son cítricos comunes en Occidente que todos conocemos y distinguimos en los mercados. Los valencianos, acostumbrados a la cultura citrícola, podemos añadir algunas variedades más como la navel, la clementina, la satsuma o la sanguina. Y los buenos gourmets saben de la existencia del exquisito yuzu japonés, las pequeñas naranjas de la China o kumquat o el caviar cítrico que tanto ha difundido Santiago Orts desde Elche.

Pero todo eso no es nada cuando llegamos a la huerta de Palmera. Allí, en los últimos testimonios de lo que fue un feraz territorio entre el mar, las montañas y el marjal, enriquecido primero con la caña de azúcar y a partir del siglo xix con los naranjos, en medio de la urbanización masiva de la frágil línea costera, atestada de horrísonas torres de apartamentos y cúmulos de chaleteros, se encuentra Todolí Citrus, donde se conservan los árboles de cítricos gracias a la fundación creada por un hijo y nie-

lthough the origin of citrus is located in the subtropical areas of China, south of the Himalayas, experts distinguish as many as four primordial families, the ancestral citrus: Maxima (the generic line of grapefruits), Medica (citrons named after Media, the region of the Medes in ancient Persia), Micrantha (progenitor of Yuzu, Kaffir lime and other varieties) and Reticulata (mandarins). From these come all the known varieties through hybridization processes. Almost all of them are natural because that is one of the biological characteristics of citrus, their evolutionary constant.

Estamos a dos pasos de la playa. Vicent Todolí ha vuelto a la tierra de su infancia. Hace unos años visitó en el sur de Francia un vivero de cítricos, cultivados en grandes macetas y bajo techo.

Eso se puede hacer mejor en el Mediterráneo español, pensó Todolí. Descubrió entonces la pasión que despertaba en la Italia del Renacimiento la citricultura, la pulsión coleccionista de los Médici florentinos, capaces de atesorar obras de Miguel Ángel y Donatello junto a cítricos exóticos procedentes de Oriente. Al fin y al cabo, el afán por coleccionar es también el de añadir objetos y valores para saber más y más, y lo mismo da que sea arte que botánica.

CURATOR INTERNACIONAL Vicent Todolí sabe muy bien de qué se trata. Lleva años dirigiendo museos y centros de arte contemporáneo –algunos de los mejores como la Tate Modern en Londres, Serralves en Oporto, el Hangar Bicocca milanés o el Ivam valenciano–, comisariando exposiciones por medio mundo y asesorando a importantes colecciones como las de la fundación Botín, José Luis Soler o Inelcom. A él le ha arrebatado apasionadamente la citricultura tras su experiencia produciendo Totoli, un aceite de oliva virgen extra de calidad radical. Ahora mismo ya dispone de más de 400 variedades a lo largo y ancho de una finca de 50.000 metros cuadrados y cuidada con esmero y abonos orgánicos. Una isla de cultura agrícola rodeada de edificaciones con balaustradas de pésimo gusto.

La idea de un museo de cítricos plantados sobre la tierra se puso en marcha desde el terreno que había pertenecido a su familia durante años. A partir de ahí ha ido adquiriendo los huertos vecinos sobre los que pendía un futuro urbanizador, pagando unos costes inasumibles para la agricultura. Entre utópico y revolucionario, Todolí está dispuesto a imaginar el jardín de las Hespérides que los antiguos situaban en algún punto del levante hispánico.

We, Valencian people, used to the citrus culture, can add more varieties such as Navel, Clementine, Satsuma or Sanguine. But all that comes to nothing when we get to the vegetable gardens in Gandía. We are in Palmera, a stone’s throw from the sea. Vicent Todolí has returned to the land of his childhood. A few years ago, he visited a citrus nursery in the south of France, where citrus trees were grown in large pots and undercover.

mejor pintor de su tiempo, el flamenco Jan Van Eyck, y que tras reconocerlo en Valencia lo recrearía junto a los pináculos góticos en el retablo del Cordero Místico que se conserva en Gante.

Pero en este huerto solo hay una nueva y pequeña construcción que se ha alzado sobre la antigua casita de aperos de su padre. Es una ligera exquisitez arquitectónica de aires californianos, compuesta por Carlos Salazar, quien no esconde la influencia recibida de Frank Gehry en cuyo estudio llevó a cabo una estancia.

Madera, acero galvanizado, vigas de hierro y amplias cristaleras confieren carácter al edificio concebido como un laboratorio para cocineros. No es una orangerie (los invernaderos para cítricos que también se pusieron de moda en

media Europa de la Ilustración). Todolí lo recalca, el proyecto de su finca consiste en mantener sobre la tierra fértil valenciana la cultura citrícola, toda la posible, la autóctona pero también la que procede de Italia, de Oriente, de las antípodas australianas... Se trata de un museo vivo de la mejor colección privada de cítricos del mundo al aire libre, cuidado con el mimo y la elegancia de los agricultores japoneses y con el respeto a las tradiciones de los italianos. La única concesión lúdica es una pequeña acequia que muere en un estanque liviano: no riega nada, solamente recuerda cómo funcionaban los campos valencianos cuando se podía regar a manta (por inundación), lo cual, ahora, está prohibido. El agua para el campo se ha racionado.

Ferran Adrià, Andoni Aduriz, Albert Raurich o Ricard Camarena son algunos de los cocineros de alto nivel que han venido a reconocer las investigaciones de este museo vivo. Varios restaurantes cercanos como Casa Manolo de Daimús o Gloriamar de Oliva ya preparan menús de inspiración cítrica dedicados al centro de Todolí. A todos ellos les ha hecho probar sus múltiples variedades. A lo largo de los huertos, Vicent y sus ayudantes disponen mesas para llevar a cabo las diversas catas.

De repente se descubren parientes del pomelo con texturas y sabores muy distintos, el japonés Hirado Buntan o el Citrus Maxima –en inglés, Shaddock–, el A Frutto Rossa más texturizado. Luego se alcanzan los que se desarrollaron desde las tierras medias de Orien-

te Próximo como los Citrus Medica o Cidras, los Mangiagli de profundos aromas, de los que se come la carne y el albedo –la parte blanca– pero no el flavedo –la corteza– que atesora los aceites esenciales sin acidez.

El recorrido resulta enciclopédico.

Aparecen las Bergamotas, la Mano de Buda con sus rugosidades en forma de dedos, la Lumia de Nápoles que trajo Alfonso V el Magnánimo, un rey tan itálico como valenciano, o la Cidra Etrog, conocido también como limón poncil, el cítrico que los cohen o sacerdotes judíos enarbolan durante la ceremonia del tabernáculo y que el citado Van Eyck pintó en la mano de su Eva de San Bavón de Gante, símbolo de la fertilidad. Pero, curiosamente, hay cítricos también llamados mordiscos

de Adán por su forma parecida a un gran pezón.

Y llegan las pequeñas Fortunellas, las cuales, a pesar de su nombre italiano, proceden de Indonesia, la China o Tailandia y se comen enteras, incluida su piel dulce, como la de la Obovata. Y hay limas como la Limetta romana o de España, que no tiene acidez alguna, la rugosa Kaffir que se puede utilizar para el curry verde tai, o la Lima confitada cuya hoja es perfecta para aromatizar unos buenos mejillones al vapor. Por momentos parece que estemos en Jurassic Park dado el tamaño, como grandes melones, de los frutos limoneros que penden de los árboles. Son calibres insólitos para nuestros conocimientos y la agricultura comercial. Como los naranjos de sanguinas a los que se

podan las raíces para que ahuyenten enfermedades y puedan envejecer más de un siglo.

El paseo prosigue entre cidras, taronjas y mandarinas... como la Sans Glande de origen japonés, una mandarina amarilla, de elegante dulzor; las naranjas amargas de cuyas hojas se extrae la esencia Neroli, muy valorada en perfumería; la Canaliculata o Kiku Daidai cuyo fruto parece una pequeña calabaza pero que también utilizan en Japón como árbol ceremonial de la Navidad... Un museo al aire libre, sorprendente, ancestral, para recuperar e investigar los valores de unos frutales que desde tiempo inmemorial se cultivan por sus provechos terapéuticos, aromáticos y gastronómicos. Para los valencianos es como sentir parte de su alma.

Todolí emphasizes that the project of his agricultural property consists of preserving the citrus culture on the fertile Valencian land as much as possible. The autochthonous citrus culture and the one that comes from Italy, from the East, from faraway Australia… It is a living museum with the best private citrus fruit collection in the world in the open air, cared for with the excellent care and elegance of the Japanese growers and respect for the Italian people’s traditions.

The only leisure concession is a small irrigation ditch that dies in a shallow pond. It does not irrigate anything; it only reminds us of how Valencian fields used to work when it was possible to irrigate by flooding, which is now forbidden. Water for the orchards has been rationed.

Sabemos que contamos con una localización envidiable, rodeados de paisajes que acaban con el eterno dilema de elegir entre mar y montaña y que ponen a nuestra disposición un interesante abanico de posibilidades adaptado a todos los gustos.

A lo largo de estas líneas, te invitamos a recorrer los alrededores de Oliva Nova con el objetivo de conocer paisajes llenos de encanto y escenarios que no te dejarán indiferente.

OLIVA–FORNA–PEGO Y SU MARJAL Esta primera propuesta está diseñada para disfrutar al máximo de la jornada, sin embargo, es una ruta perfecta para quien busca un plan relajado, o para quienes se están iniciando en este tipo de actividades. Cuenta con una dificultad baja y puede realizarse, sin paradas, aproximadamente en dos horas.

Más que una ruta, podríamos catalogar este recorrido como un paseo a través del tiempo. Y es que en apenas 34 kilómetros seremos capaces de transportarnos a otras épocas mientras disfrutamos de unos paisajes que parecen sacados de una película de cine. La primera parada de nuestro camino será el pueblo de Forna, una pequeña localidad de menos de cien habitantes que tiene el poder de conquistar a cada persona que lo visita.

La singularidad de su urbanismo, los suelos adoquinados y las calles decoradas con decenas de flores, sorprenden a la par que enamoran. En la cima de la montaña, coronando el paisaje, se encuentra el castillo de Forna, un palacio señorial del siglo XIII desde donde podremos disfrutar de una panorámica del municipio y sus alrededores.

No muy lejos, tras una cómoda pendiente hacia abajo, llegaremos al pueblo de Pego, una localidad que nos invitará a pasar el día recorriendo sus calles y visitando sus monumentos. Empezaremos

con una visita a la Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, un templo de estilo renacentista que encontraremos junto a la Plaza del Ayuntamiento, desde la cual también podremos disfrutar de su admirable arquitectura. Continuando con nuestra visita de templos, nos dirigiremos a la Capilla del Ecce Homo, del siglo XVIII, de la que destaca su cúpula octogonal ornamentada con las típicas tejas azules del barroco valenciano.

Quizás sea el momento de hacer una parada técnica y disfrutar de su famosa coca de gambas, un almuerzo típico que nos dará energía para el resto del día.

Continuaremos visitando las propuestas de cultura que nos ofrece Pego: el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo y el Museo Etnológico, donde encontraremos una combinación perfecta de arte e historia.

Podríamos pasar el día recorriendo el casco antiguo de este pintoresco pueblo.

Sin embargo, nada puede poner mejor guinda a nuestra ruta que una visita al Castillo de Ambra, de estilo árabe, dominante en la cresta de la montaña que le pone nombre. Desde aquí se puede disfrutar de las vistas de nuestra última parada, el Parque Natural de la Marjal de Pego y Oliva, un humedal de ensueño que invita a aparcar las bicis y disfrutar de la calma de un paradero natural repleto de biodiversidad y grandes zonas de agua.

que representa cómo sería una vivienda típica de la burguesía del siglo XIX. Su objetivo principal es el de difundir la historia de su mayor desarrollo urbanístico, precedido del auge económico de Dénia, cuando la ciudad se convirtió en centro del comercio de la pasa.

A continuación, seguiremos con el plato estrella del día: el famoso arroz a banda de Dénia, un plato que nace en las barcas de pesca y recibe su nombre por su peculiar forma de preparación, ya que el pescado de este arroz se añadía aparte. Hoy en día existe un número reducido de restaurantes que lo sirvan de la forma tradicional, por lo que, si queremos disfrutar de este momento, tendremos que añadir a nuestras agendas una reserva que nos asegure no perdernos esta tradición. Tampoco debería faltar un aperitivo a base de gambas rayadas de Dénia, hervidas o a la plancha, como se prefieran.

Continuaremos el recorrido con la que, sin duda, será la actividad favorita de los más pequeños de la casa. El Museo del Juguete, situado en la primera planta de la antigua estación del tren, ofrece una vista al pasado a través de la historia de la industria juguetera y una amplia variedad de piezas lúdicas de época.

Para cerrar este recorrido, terminaremos con el Museo de la Mar de Dénia.

Se trata de una de las últimas incorporaciones culturales de la ciudad, que nos cuenta su historia a través de más de cuatrocientas piezas arqueológicas que datan desde el siglo VI a.C. hasta principios del XX. Si por el contrario prefieres hacer este recorrido por el lado de la montaña, deberás dejar atrás la ciudad y continuar por el camino viejo de Dénia, para evitar el tráfico y disfrutar de un paseo atravesando Els Poblets. Desde allí podrás disfrutar de un descenso que te llevará al pequeño municipio alicantino de Rafol d’Almunia, cuna de la Serra de Segària desde la cual tendrás la ocasión de deleitarte con unas espectaculares vistas de la comarca. Vuelve a ponerte en marcha en un ascenso por la cara sur del puerto de la Sagra, encaminándote hacia la vuelta al resort a través del Parque Natural de la Marjal Pego-Oliva. No existe una mejor manera de terminar esta jornada.

We could describe this tour as a walk through time more than a route. Just 34 kilometres will transport us to other times while enjoying landscapes that seem to be taken from a movie. The first stop on our way will be the village of Forna, a small town of less than a hundred inhabitants that has the power to conquer every person who visits it. The uniqueness of its urban fabric, the cobbled floors and the streets decorated with dozens of flowers, surprise and charm simultaneously.

At the top of the mountain, crowning the landscape is the castle of Forna, a manor palace of the thirteenth century from where we can enjoy a panoramic view of the town and its surroundings.

Not far away, after a comfortable downhill slope, we will reach the village of Pego, a town that invites us to spend the day walking through its streets and visiting its monuments. We will start with a visit to the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, a Renaissance-style temple that we will find next to the Town Hall Square, from which we can also enjoy its admirable architecture. Continuing with our visit to temples, we will go to the Chapel of the Ecce Homo, from the 18th century. Its octagonal dome stands out, decorated with the typical blue tiles of the Valencian Baroque style.

Maybe it’s time to make a ‘technical stop’ and enjoy its famous shrimp coca bread, a typical lunch that will give us energy for the rest of the day. We will continue

visiting the cultural activities that Pego offers: the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Ethnological Museum, where we will find a perfect combination of art and history. We could spend the day touring the old town of this picturesque village.

However, nothing can put a better icing on the cake to our route than a visit to the Moorish-style Ambra Castle, perched on the crest of the mountain that gives it its name. From here, you can enjoy the views of our last stop, the Natural Park of the Marjal de Pego and Oliva, a dream wetland that invites you to park your bikes and enjoy the calm of a natural park full of biodiversity and large areas of water.

BY THE COAST AND THE PORTS This second proposal will cover approximately 67 kilometres between the coast and mountains, where we will visit villages and places full of Mediterranean style.

The route starts by heading towards our first stop: the city of Denia. This section offers a path along the coast, enjoying spectacular sea views until we reach our destination. We know that the charm of this city makes us never get tired of it, and whether it is our first time or if we are already regulars of the place, it always has something new to offer. At this point, we are presented with two alternatives: a day full of culture touring the city or a cycling adventure through the ports and villages of the area.

of the city of Alicante. This museum offers a glimpse into the past in a building that represents what a typical 19th-century bourgeois home would have looked like. Its main objective is to spread the history of its significant urban development, preceded by the economic boom of Denia when the city became the centre of the raisin trade.

Next, we will continue with the star dish of the day: the famous “Arroz a banda de Dénia”, a recipe born in the fishing boats that receives its name from its peculiar way of preparation, as the fish of this rice was served separately.

Nowadays, few restaurants serve it in the traditional way, so if we want to enjoy this recipe, we will have to add a reservation to our agendas to ensure that we do not miss this tradition. An appetizer based on boiled or grilled prawns from Dénia, as you prefer, should not be missing either.

We will continue the tour with what will undoubtedly be the favourite activity of the family’s youngest members. The Toy Museum, located on the first floor of the old train station, offers a glimpse into the past through the history of the toy industry and a wide variety of vintage playthings.

Una visita aclamada por su audiencia y que no dejará a nadie indiferente.

En nuestro descenso nos dirigiremos a Beniarbeig, en búsqueda del Port del Rafol, y continuaremos nuestra jornada en dirección hacia el Vergel, un tranquilo pueblo perteneciente a la Marina Alta, que ofrece una interesante parada gracias a su gran riqueza patrimonial.

Una despedida llena de calma que servirá de cierre a una jornada única.

To close this tour, we will finish visiting the Dénia Sea Museum. It is one of the latest cultural additions to the city, which tells its history through more than four hundred archaeological pieces dating from the 6th century BC to the beginning of the 20th century. We will find it in the old fish market, next to the port, from where we will say goodbye to this beautiful city, returning along the path that led us to it.

Should you prefer to do this route on the mountainside, you will have to leave the city behind and continue along the old road of Dénia to avoid traffic and enjoy a walk through Els Poblets. From there, you can enjoy a descent on the road that will take you to the small town of Rafol d’Almunia, in the heart of the Serra de Segària, from where you will have the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views of the county. Set off again on an ascent up the south side of the Sagra pass, heading back to the resort through the Marjal Pego-Oliva Natural Park. There is no better way to end this day.

ROUTE OF THE COLL DE RATES AND THE CALAVERAS This route starts a day full of adrenaline.

It is an experience with a lot of accumulated unevenness that is almost 100 kilometres long, including visiting unique villages and landscapes of the area. Leaving the Oliva Nova complex, we will border the famous Marjal Pego-

Oliva Natural Park and head towards the region’s interior, passing through towns such as Pego, Sagra and Tormos, among others.

Ascending through the protagonist of the route and the Marina area, we will reach our first stop: the Coll de Rates, a pass between the Ferrer mountains and the Carrascar de Parcent mountain range, the natural dividing line between the Marina Alta and Marina Baja counties. This stop offers a perfect panoramic view for photography lovers—an ideal place to recharge your batteries and breathe the fresh air and tranquillity of the site.

We will bring our feet closer to the ground again during the descent to Parcent, from where we will go to the town of Pedreguer, crossing the villages of Llosa de Camatxo and Alcalalí. The latter gives us some fictional landscapes when its streets are adorned with almond blossom during the spring months. When we reach the town of Pedreguer, we will head towards Benidoleig, home of the Cuevas de las Calaveras (Caves of the Skulls), co-star attraction of the route and where we will not find skulls. Still, we can witness some vestiges of the Neolithic period. A visit acclaimed by its audience and that will leave no one indifferent.

On our descent, we will head towards Beniarbeig, searching for the Port del Rafol. We will continue our journey towards El Vergel, a quiet village belonging to the Marina Alta, which offers an exciting stop thanks to its rich heritage. A farewell filled with calm will serve to close a memorable day.
