Since its founding by farmworker advocates and care offered by volunteer doctors in a room above La Luna Market in Rutherford, OLE Health has been guided by one core principle: everyone deserves quality healthcare. Over the past six decades, OLE Health has made dramatic advances in how healthcare is delivered to the most vulnerable and those most likely to otherwise not have access to care. Today, at five health centers from Calistoga to American Canyon and with an active Mobile Medicine Team, nearly 40,000 residents of Napa County rely on OLE Health for primary and dental care, behavioral health services, optometry, nutrition and pharmacy services.

• 80% of patients have annual household income of less than $53,000

On behalf of the OLE Health Foundation Board of Directors, I am happy to welcome you to Vida OLE! Much like the Napa Valley community we celebrate tonight, this event is like no other.

I cannot think of a better location than Rutherford to celebrate and support this incredible organization. “Clinic OLE” began more than 50 years ago, not far from where we sit tonight — first as a small room in the Rutherford Information Center, and then as a slightly larger room above La Luna Market. It’s incredible how far that little clinic has come. Though it now has five health centers in Napa County, spanning from American Canyon to Calistoga, it has never lost sight of the reason it was created: to provide quality healthcare to workers who are the backbone of our community.

For over 50 years, the people who contribute to making Napa Valley a world-class destination — whether through grape picking in the fields, attending to guests' needs in hotels, or preparing exceptional cuisine in kitchens — have relied on OLE Health (now CommuniCare+OLE) for their healthcare needs. Thanks to the enduring support of this community over many decades, OLE Health has ensured access to high-quality primary care services for everyone throughout Napa County, regardless of insurance coverage or financial capability.

Despite our overall success, we have a unique challenge Up Valley. We care for roughly 60% of the residents who live north of Yountville.

In these communities, even individuals with private insurance and financial resources have limited options for primary care. With providers retiring or relocating, the demand for our services has surged, yet our current small clinics in St. Helena and Calistoga cannot adequately meet this demand. We are determined to change this and we need your help to make it possible. Once again, the generosity of this community will make a huge difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors.

When you raise your paddle tonight, you will be helping us kick off a campaign to build a new 11,000-square-foot facility that will serve the entire Up Valley community, from Yountville to Angwin. You will be helping us build more than a structure; you will be helping us build a healthier community for all.

NAPA VALLEY VINTNERS, recipient John Shafer Visionary Award

The Napa Valley Vintners are the recipient of the second annual John Shafer Visionary Award, which honors the legacy of vintner John Shafer, who was among OLE Health’s fiercest advocates. Shafer helped create the OLE Health Foundation and foster the community support that sustains the organization today. The John Shafer Visionary Award recognizes those who have furthered the mission of the organization, which is to ensure that high-quality primary care is provided to everyone who lives and works in the communities it serves. Last year, the inaugural award was presented to vintner and longtime OLE Health supporter Rick Jones.

In 1984, “Clinic OLE” became a beneficiary of the Napa Valley Wine Auction, later known as Auction Napa Valley. And, for nearly 40 years, the Napa Valley Vintners continued supporting Clinic OLE as it grew and became OLE Health, and now CommuniCare+OLE. This award recognizes that historic giving from the Napa Valley Vintners, which totals $40 million since that first auction.

“The financial support from Napa Valley Vintners was instrumental to the growth of OLE Health. With their help, it was able to expand and better serve the Napa Valley community,” said Naoko Dalla Valle, OLE Health Foundation Board Chair. “Their giving was invaluable in the creation of our two flagship health centers right here in Napa. This award allows us to recognize the long-term contributions and historical impact that NVV has had on the organization.”

NVV has been a part of many of the major milestones in OLE Health’s history. In 2002, it moved into its first permanent home as a result of John Shafer and NVV’s effort to spearhead and serve as lead donor for the building of a community health center. In 2016, NVV donated $6 million to help kick off the fundraising for what is now the Napa Valley Vintners South Napa Campus. Other donations over the years allowed the organization to expand operations to include additional services.

Those honored include current NVV Board Chair Cyril Chappellet, and past NVV Board and Auction Napa Valley chairs Bruce Cakebread, Hugh Davies, Dan Duckhorn, David Duncan, Kathleen Heitz, Paula Kornell, Beth Novak, David Pearson, John Trefethen and Bob Trinchero along with Napa Valley Vintners President and CEO Linda Reiff.

The John Shafer Visionary Award was officially presented at the Vida OLE! Visionaries’ Brunch on June 27, 2024, hosted by OLE Health Foundation Board Member Claire Stull and her husband Steven Stull at their Stags Leap home. The invitation-only event acknowledges those who have provided significant support to CommuniCare+OLE throughout its 50-plus year history and serves as the official kickoff to Vida OLE!

Fund a Need

HELP GIVE HEALTHY A NEW UP VALLEY ADDRESS.

Each year, OLE Health serves nearly 9,000 Up Valley patients — that’s 60% of all residents — and the need for our services continues to increase while options for primary care, mental health providers and dentists become more and more scarce.

The reality, however, is that our current facilities are both too small and too outdated to provide the quality of care and the range of services our patients need. In St. Helena, a small rented clinic, and in Calistoga, a 40-year-old modular where the supply closet and break room are one in the same. Quite simply, they're insufficient.

Without adequate access to care, patients are required to drive too far for behavioral health, labs, nutrition, perinatal care, clinical pharmacy and other services. For many, be it time or transportation challenges, these services that are vital to their overall health and wellbeing are too often foregone altogether.

It’s time this changed. After a years-long search for a new location, we are excited to share that we have secured a three-acre parcel in the heart of Calistoga where Lincoln Avenue meets Silverado Trail.

And tonight, we kick off a Capital Campaign to build a new state-ofthe-art Up Valley Campus that will meet the ever-growing needs of our patients and communities. We need your help to make it happen. Your gift will change the life of a neighbor. It might even save it.

OLE Health Foundation Chair and proprietor of Dalla Valle Vineyards, Naoko Dalla Valle, has designed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in a vertical tasting of every vintage of their cult wine Maya at her Oakville estate. Led by well-known wine critic, Master of Wine and the Co-Founder of The Wine Independent Lisa Perroti-Brown, and the winemaker — and wine’s namesake — Maya Dalla Valle, you will taste all 32 vintages from 1988 to 2021 of the wine that critics say “marries a rare sense of elegance and finesse with incredible intensity,” “is stunningly graceful and refined,” and is quite simply “fabulous.”

The iconic winery is closed to the public but the successful bidders will receive an exclusive invitation to an intimate dinner at the Dalla Valle estate prepared by award-winning Chef Kyle Connaughton and his team from three Michelin-starred Single Thread. Webster’s Dictionary defines an icon as “a person or thing widely admired especially for having great influence or significance.” Napa Valley has no shortage of them and at this special afternoon we’ll be recognizing some of the iconic women who have made their mark in business, philanthropy and healthcare in our community.

Speaking of icons, Wine Country cuisine has its own notable place atop many “best of” lists. For today’s luncheon La Saison founder and Chief Sprinkler of Sparkles, Chef Natalie Niksa will design a menu in her signature heartfelt farmer-focused style that pairs beautifully with fine wines from the Treasury Wine Estates portfolio of wines.

To add even further sparkle is Parisian fashion jeweler Messika, whose timeless jewels accompany women every day and for life's most beautiful moments. In her designs, Founder Valerie Messika embodies her vision of “encouraging women to become who they are — brilliant, free, sensual, audacious, classic, strong, elegant… without limit.

Vintner Grant Long Jr. is throwing a Texas-sized barbecue at Aonair, the winery he and his wife Megan Long purchased in 2015, and you’re invited. While the stakes may not be as high in Napa Valley as they are in Las Vegas, the competition will be fierce nonetheless when you try your hand at a professional dealer-led game of Texas Hold ‘Em poker.

Then, under the stars in the wide-open skies of Conn Valley, it’s time for cowboy tales around the fire while sipping on whiskey from Grant’s extensive selections of Bourbons, including his own Bourbon line and puffing on a cigar you’ve selected from his collection of fine cigars.
