OLEAN — Local retailers said they will comply with a ban on single-use plastic bags now under consideration, but would like more details moving forward. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday announced that his executive budget for the 2019-20 fiscal year calls for the ban on single-use plastic bags by retailers. Cuomo, citing the pollution from non-biodegradable bags as a health risk for residents and the environment, put forward a proposal from the state Plastic Bag Task Force to prohibit busiGov. t was a case of bad luck … turned into good luck. When the Tractor Supply store in Arcade had a water pipe burst early Jan. 13, employees arrived to find a 2-inch ceiling pipe leaking water down to the floor through three storage racks of animal feed in pallets. “Our back storage area had water on the floor, which even carried onto the sales floor,” says Pete Lounsbury, the store manager. While the first job was to stop the leak, clean up and ready the store for business, it soon became apparent that the significant number of affected feed pallets would have to be addressed. “The leaked water was potable, but obviously the feed on the affected pallets could no longer be sold,” Lounsbury says. “We were faced with filling multiple dumpsters with what appeared to be, in some instances, product that had been untouched or barely damaged.” State & Union ... page A-5
