Editor's Note

Welcome to your 2017 edition of The OW, looking back at news and achievements across the past year. I am delighted to be able to see 2018 in with our new look publication that has hopefully taken on board some of the feedback we received from you. As with all areas of alumni relations, we rely heavily on your input, and would love to hear your thoughts on the latest format and any areas in which you think we might look to improve.

As most of you will know, 2017 came to a close saying farewell to our former Alumni Relations Officer, Wendy Marks. Everyone at Worksop College would like to take this opportunity to thank Wendy for the loyalty and commitment she has shown to the role over the last 14 years.

Wendy was a valuable member of the team and will be missed by many. We wish her all the best.

GOING FORWARD IN 2018 2018 will see us launch a brand new website dedicated to our alumni. The site will act as both a database and website that will be more comprehensive and interactive than its predecessor. The site will have a regularly updated news section that will allow you to keep abreast of news from your peers, along with developments at both schools. The database, once in place, will allow much better forms of engagement between members. To ensure you get the best from this site, we would ask you to make sure all your preferred contact details are kept up to date. I shall keep you informed as to exactly when the new site will go live, but I expect it to be towards the end of the spring term.

The 2018 edition of The OW will resume normal timescales and will be published in December.

In addition, I will be issuing a termly newsletter that looks back across the previous term. As ever, we rely on you for content, so please do keep sending your news through, however big or small.

We will be launching an evolving programme of events that will run throughout the year. It would be great to meet as many of you as possible over the course of 2018. We welcome your thoughts on the types of events you would like to see, and of course, any help in arranging/facilitating meetups is always appreciated.

As a hugely important part of the school’s community, I hope that you will continue to support the school in any way you can, attending events, offering careers advice, donating, or simply spreading the word that Worksop College has so much to offer its pupils, past, current and future.

Untamed Photography A love of photography has taken OW Mark Fernley half-way round the world to work in the depths of the Amazon rainforest.

ark Fernley (T 03 – 08) spends nine months of the year in the Peruvian Amazon, where he has regular encounters with - among other wildlife; snakes, spiders, monkeys and big cats.

The 28-year-old is the Field Director with Untamed Photography, a company that runs wildlife photography workshops, tours and internships in some of the least explored parts of the world.

The OW caught up with Mark to find out about his latest project in the lowland Peruvian Amazon, involving mirrors and very large cats!

Mark tell us more about your most recent study‌ The Mirror Image Stimulation Study (M.I.S.S) began early this year. Myself and a team of interns constructed mirrors in a part of the rainforest, up-river from the town of Puerto Maldonado; an area that we knew was highly populated with white lipped peccary and therefore large numbers of Jaguars (Panthera onca). We set up cameras to record the wildlife activity.

What is the main purpose of the study?

The main objectives are to; identify which species respond to their own reflection, what behaviour they display when they do, whether they quickly get used to mirrors, and to understand what factors could help explain certain behaviour.

Why is this work so important?

We are constantly fighting to protect concessions and wildlife against illegal logging and gold-mining. Getting out as much imagery and videography of wildlife on social media and the internet is slowly, along with many other things from other conservationists, bringing tourism in and helping to protect the land from destruction.

How can fellow OWs find out more?

Our team have been writing a theoretical and physiological analysis to the footage we have captured, these are shown at bit.ly/2m8yz8p And what can we expect from Untamed Photography in 2018?

Hopefully we will be working alongside Bristol Zoo in the UK with regards to photography and conservation here in the lowland Amazon.

Mark Fernley and Untamed Photography offer internships in the lowland Peruvian Amazon, including placements with its long-term Mirror Image Stimulation Study. Interns work with professional photographers and biologists from around the world.

And what have you discovered?

When we uploaded the footage we could not believe our eyes. We captured a large male jaguar that was there for about 50 minutes. We saw signs of aggression, social behaviour and curiosity towards the mirror. We noticed that the jaguar had firstly attacked the mirror, indicating signs of competitor recognition rather than selfrecognition. We gathered information that the jaguar was looking behind the mirror and into the mirror itself, trying to understand where the opposition (its reflection) had disappeared to.

Other neotropical species have been captured on camera, such as pale winged trumpeters and bicolored porcupines to name a few. At present, we have noticed that most neotropical mammals have found the mirror threatening – it would seem that jaguars have been the only inquisitive subject, thus far.

irtually all Independent Schools have an ‘Old Boys’ Masonic Lodge tucked away in the background, and Worksop College is no different. The Old Worksopian Lodge is now in its 68th year and in 2014 was voted one of the best in the country, according to the Annual School Lodges Festival.

Being a member of the OW Lodge is a great way of keeping in touch with the College and fellow OWs. With minimal time commitments, the Lodge enjoy meeting four times a year, with a membership spanning across the generations.

While Freemasonry (celebrating its 300th year this year) quietly does a huge amount of good throughout the world, its enjoyment is highest at a local lodge level, with around 9,000 operating worldwide.

Staff leavers L ast year we have said goodbye to the following members of staff, some of whom have taught at the College for many years and will be remembered by hundreds of OWs for their contribution to their time at school.

MR COLIN PATON first joined the College in 1990 where he managed many different roles, including a long-standing Housemaster of Talbot House. Colin taught Spanish to generations of Worksopians and we have been lucky and grateful to have had him as a colleague, role model and member of our community.

MRS CATHY BECKETT originally joined the College community when her husband was Housemaster of Derry, joining the teaching staff as Head of Learning Support in 1995. Cathy has been tireless in her support of individual learners and of the teachers who teach those learners.

MRS MAXINE SMITH originally joined the staff in the Admissions department in early 2013 becoming Head of English in September of that year. Maxine has achieved a great deal for the school in a short time, overseeing the introduction of A-Level English Language and the Junior Lecture Programme amongst other things.

We wish her every happiness in her retirement.

MR JAMES SMITH left us for the second time last year. James is an OW (S 05-10) and joined our Graduate Assistant Programme in 2013 where he continued after that to qualify as a teacher of Biology. James has made a huge impact on and off the sports field in his time with us, most recently as Assistant Housemaster of Portland House. We look forward to his return at some point!

MRS ALISON MARRIOTT, Head of Psychology, also left us last year and we wish her every success in her future career.

MRS GERRY BURTON joined the College in 2003. In her time she has worked as Assistant Head of Catering (and we all know how good the food is here!), but since then she has also been an outstanding classroom teacher. The Leith's course has been her 'baby', and the quality of work produced there is worthy of Michelin stars. Beyond that, she has willingly strapped on her boots to join Duke of Edinburgh and CCF expeditions.

At the end of 2017’s Spring Term we said goodbye to MRS SUE POWELL, Housemistress of Derry for nearly 9 years. Sue moved on to take up a new role at Farlington School, Horsham, as Head of Boarding. We wish Sue all the very best in her new school.

In December we said farewell to our School Secretary MRS MONICA SWANNACK after 21 years of service. Monica's connection to the college goes even further back as she recounted tales of coming to the college when her brother OW Richard Shacklock (M 64 - 67) was a student here. Monica's husband Richard (SH 64 - 69) is also a former student as is her daughter Holly (D 01 - 03). Monica you will be sorely missed!

December also saw us say a sad farewell to MRS PENNY BAUM (SCR Secretary), MRS JULIA RICHARDS (Peripatetic Teacher) and MRS JOANNE ROBINSON (School Nurse).

Good luck to all with your future endeavours.

And finally, The OW were sad to say goodbye to our former Alumni Relations Officer, MRS WENDY MARKS - pictured opposite. Wendy has made an outstanding contribution to the OW community and will be missed by many. We wish Wendy lots of luck in the future.

OW Golf Society Report 2017 A fter playing two of the three former Ryder Cup courses in Yorkshire, Moortown and Lindrick, in 2014 and 2015, we returned to College Pines in 2016. The following year we went on to play Otley on 15 May 2017, an excellent parkland course near Leeds, where our hardworking Secretary David Payne was still in High Office as President of the Otley Golf Club. We had 25 players and 22 apologies (who are listed separately).

We were well looked after in the clubhouse, and the course itself was in fine condition. This coming year on Monday 14 May 2018, David Payne & Peter Huddlestone have booked the OWGS to play at Fulford, York. We would like to thank Peter, a long standing Fulford member, for his help in planning this golf day.

BIRKDALE BUCKET 2017 The Birkdale Bucket was played on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 March, and held as usual early in the season at Woodhall Spa. We had a team of 13 OWs playing, the largest team for many years.

OWGS (3 cards to count) came a good fourth place out of the eight schools. We do welcome any other OW golfers who have not played in the Bucket before (or for some time) to join us. Please contact me if you are at all interested.

This year's Bucket will be played at Woodhall Spa on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 March 2018.

There was an extra summer Birkdale Bucket held at Ilkley to celebrate the 60th anniversary of this event. This was held on Friday 9 June on a good sunny day, with seven OWs taking part out of a field of 42. David Walker organised a side of eight OWGS members to play a team of Oundle Old Boys later in the season (14 September) at Moortown, where Robert Blackburn, one of their opposition team, was Club Captain. None of us can remember the exact result, but it was a very pleasant day on a good course!

In the summer of 2017, George Thompson (Society Team Captain) played in the preliminary rounds of the Grafton Morrish at Fixby. His team sadly narrowly missed out on one of the four places available for the final at Brancaster & Hunstanton.

This is always a difficult task as this is scratch foursomes. The three pairs were; Wheatcroft and Wilkinson, Thompson and Waddington, Hobson and Kettlewell. It is some time since we made the finals, but George is a great optimist, as well as a good golfer, and is determined to get his team down there at Brancaster. If there are any young low handicap OWs we do not know about, please contact George as soon as you can.

We also normally announce the winners of the five OWGS trophies with the two veteran’s cups detailed at the end. These are; Butlin Cup - best net score, Blake Cup - best gross score, Wilks Cup - best stableford score, Drake Cup - best aged over 60 score, and Portland Bowl - best aged over 70 score.

This year I am going to nominate just one winner, and that is David Payne, (pictured) who won the Drake Cup. I do apologise to the other four Cup winners who will get double exposure when they defend their trophies next year at Fulford. David was a good friend to many of us and an excellent Secretary of the Society, but very sadly he died of cancer on 29 August after a very short stay in hospital. This was a double blow, as David’s younger brother Jon died just over a year ago, and was also a keen golfer. David was very much involved in charity work, in-house hospital radio, commentating on local amateur rugby events, and a keen member of Leeds’ Musical Society.

Help shape the future of golf at Worksop

I

n 2016 the College invested £15k in a TrackMan golf shot analyser; a club and ball tracking radar system enabling players to analyse each shot. The system measures a variety of components crucial for a great shot such as club head impact, club head and ball speed and ball spin rates.

The pupils love the technology, and whilst we have been using the TrackMan on the outdoor driving range, the next logical stage is to create a purpose-built fully functional swing room for indoor training during the winter months, evenings or bad weather.

The school has plans to adapt one of the current squash rooms to make way for an indoor practice range. The room will include a projector and PC that transfers the TrackMan data into a simulated golf shot played on a driving range or golf course, as well as a TV screen for the TrackMan data. The room will even have a base carpet that is a putting green, so students will be able to practice and analyse, not just drives and irons, but putts too.

Not only will the facility improve our school golfers, but it will also hopefully bring the best coaches in the area to us, including Pete Cowan (coach to Open Champion, Henrik Stenson and Worksop’s own Danny Willet and Lee Westwood).

We are hoping to raise the cost of the new swing room through generous donations from past and present pupils, parents and friends of the school.

Major Allen Award After embarking on an experience of a lifetime, Nick Hobbs (M 15 – 17) reflects on his time in Argentina after he was fortunate enough to receive the prestigious Major Allen Award.

A

fter experiencing a period of around eight weeks away from parents and home, I feel my exchange to Argentina has broadened my horizons in multiple ways. During my time away I was able to attend lessons at Cardenal Newman School. This was a big shock to me as the classes do not consist of ten or less pupils as we’re used to at Worksop, but 30 plus! The school was all-boys and there were many differences in the way the students behaved to that which I was used to at Worksop College. This helped me appreciate the dedication and effort the teachers put in at Worksop. As 90% of the lessons were taught in Spanish, I was able to regain my confidence, having gone from being a 12 year old native speaker to barely speaking for six years. My speech was slightly rusty but was soon restored after a few days of speaking with the locals.

After a long 13 hour flight I arrived in Argentina with fellow Worksop pupil Luke Rivers, and as keen rugby players we were eager to train as soon as possible. After another hour in a shuttle, we arrived at our host family’s house before being taken to the school, where we took part in training that day. The experience of being in another country all by yourself can be daunting, however, soon after arrival all the worry disappeared as everyone we met was as kind and willing to help as the last one. The pupils at the school were used to speaking basic English, and would make an effort to communicate with us. As the Spanish speaker I would be in charge of translating instructions and complex sentences to Luke.

As part of the experience we managed to enrol into the rugby club linked to the school. This was incredibly beneficial for my development as a player, as I experienced a different approach to rugby. Sessions would consist of an hour of physical conditioning, followed by an hour of practical skills, again a very different approach to the training methods used at Worksop College.

The thought of having a host family was daunting to start with, as living in someone else's home can be scary at times, however I was lucky to be able to stay with a wonderful family who very quickly made it clear that I was part of the family too. I found I was often giving out advice to the youngest brother and inspiring him to take the opportunity to go abroad as I had done; to experience what it's like to be away from everything you know, helping you to appreciate what you have at home.

As part of the family I was invited to a very special celebration to commemorate the family "Moscas", a tradition that has been going for a very long time in Argentina. At this gathering there were hundreds of family members; I had never experienced such an event, and it was very enlightening to see how much appreciation there is for family in Argentina.

During my stay I also had the chance to experience half term ‘the Argentinian way’. My host family took me to the countryside in the north of Argentina to a location called Entre Rios, which is near the Uruguay border. In this very isolated location I was able to experience the native culture in Argentina and had to live as a gaucho for the duration of my stay (a gaucho is a traditional Argentinian country man that lives from the land). During my week I experienced campfires in the wild, horse riding, and an asado (a typical Argentinian barbeque).

The whole experience was an incredible one.

To be able to go to a place where everything is unknown, away from all the things you are used to is mind-blowing. I was able to create very strong bonds with my host family, and I feel as though they have become a part of my own family. Even after having departed we are still in touch and I am planning to go back and see them. I feel as though the experience was very successful and worthwhile as it taught me more about myself as a person, and I was able to learn about a completely different culture.

I am very thankful to the College for giving me the opportunity to have embarked on such a wonderful journey, and to the OW Society for the financial help as part of the Major Allen Award.

Congratulations to HARRIET CUNDY (G 12-16) (pictured above) who climbed to Everest Base Camp in June, raising over £1500 for the Alzheimer’s Society. The experience has spurred Harriet into taking on Kilimanjaro and Mt Elbrus this year, which would make her one of the youngest women to complete the Seven Summit challenge. Good Luck Harriet!

News from ROBIN SOPER (M 42-47) who studied at Cambridge after leaving the College and became an Engineer. Robin’s main career was with Sir Owen Williams & Partners, where he worked on several parts of the motorway programme, including the first section of the M1 in the Luton area. He has spent most of his married life in Solihull with his wife Hilary and their daughter Helen. The couple have in recent years happily moved into a nice retirement flat, settling in to their community and making many new friends.

EAVAN QUINLAN (D 06-11) has just completed her Foundation Year One as a doctor, after graduating from Leicester Medical School in 2016. Following her finals, Eavan travelled around Asia for 2 months, completing her medical elective in India. Eavan’s area of medical interest is Interventional Neuroradiology, and her first regional presentation was on the topic of Stroke Mimics.

Having lived in Australia since 1996, JAMES EVERS (P 86-91) moved from Sydney to Perth last year, taking up the job of Travel Operations Manager at Curtin University. He has Facebook to thank for some great OW reunions with ADRIAN BOWER (M 86-91), ROCKY CHOW (Pt 86-91) and GUY STENSON (P 86-91) in the last year. He also happened to attend a lunch where former Australian cricketer, Adam Gilchrist was the guest. After chatting, James discovered that Adam had visited Worksop College and played for the U19 Australian team in 1991, during the years of Headmaster, Roger Knight.

Prior to retiring to Norfolk nine years ago, MIKE RUSTON (SH 62-66) had a varied career after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant.

From 1992-94 he had a spell as Bursar in fellow Woodard school, Denstone. He then went on to run his own delicatessen, before finally moving to Cambridge where he ran a village convenience store. He now enjoys retirement in Old Hunstanton, Norfolk.

Despite nearly 60 years since their time at the College, it was a lively reunion when MALCOLM BARNSDALE (Mt 55-59), JOHN CHESHIRE (M 55-59) and COLIN CHESHIRE (Pt 56-59) met up in Tavistock. They still found plenty to chat and reminisce about, including their antics and successes as members of the school shooting team!

Congratulations to JESS STACEY (D 08-13) who graduated from the University of Newcastle in June with a First Class MChem degree. Jess’ next step is to complete a PhD at Sheffield.

Swapping the landmarks of Big Ben and the London Eye for the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomph, made TIM FOULD’S (T 09-14) debut marathon that little bit more special. Tim ran in the Paris Marathon in April 2017, raising money for Worldwide Cancer Research. Tim’s aim was to raise £1,000, however, at the time of writing, his total was a target-busting £2,369. Supported by his brother Ed and sister Maddy, Tim’s marathon experience was unforgettable, with a very worthwhile cause encouraging him every step of the way. Congratulations Tim!

Hockey, cycling and camping don’t usually go hand in hand, however, they do for OW GEORGIA HIRD (SH 10-15). Along with her hockey teammates, Georgia cycled 245 miles from Leeds Beckett University to Marlow over nine days, playing hockey and camping at each destination along the way. As a bonus for all their efforts, the girls raised over £3,000 for Help For Heroes.

Old school friends VANESSA O’MEARA (née Williams) (D 96-01) and KATE MARSHALL (née Hattrell) (D 96-01) still meet up regularly, and last February they both welcomed sons within a week of each other. Vanessa’s son Jack is her second child and a brother for Fenella; Kate’s son Joshua is her first child.

2017 was a busy year for JOHN GRICE (P 93-98) who got married, moved to the Cotswolds and took up a new Consultant Orthopaedic role.

John still managed to find time to meet up for a weekend in Birmingham with his fellow Pelham leavers from the same year; KEVIN BONNER, TIM GREEN AND SAM FULLER.

KARL LUCAS (P 92-95) is proud to announce that his second son, Solomon, was born in March weighing in at 8lb 4oz. Another proud achievement was being invited to play for England Hockey Masters team against a Hockey for Heroes team. Karl said “It was a huge honour to put on the England kit and it was for a great charity. And we won 6-4!”

The South coast, namely Bournemouth and Poole, have been home to BERTIE BOWMAN (SH 52-57) for all of his working life after leaving the College and joining a firm of estate agents.

Qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor, Bertie practiced in a number of different areas of estate agency, meeting famous names such as David Niven, John Lennon and Warren Mitchell along the way. Bertie retired at the age of 77 and is kept busy by his five children, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

OW News Pursuing her dream of becoming a milliner, GEORGINA DURDY (D 04-09) has put her Fashion and Textile Design degree to very good use. Proud new grandfather RICHARD BUMFORD (T 88-93) is moving from Australia back to his home in Spain to be closer to his new granddaughter, Sofia. Richard will still continue to run his ski and coffee shop business.

With a career in Earth Science Research, JONATHAN PATCHETT (M 65-69) settled at the University of Arizona, where he became a Full Professor, subsequently retiring in 2011. He is now able to pursue his interest in amateur astronomy and often spends several days at remote campgrounds, avoiding the city lights which hamper any chance of viewing other galaxies.

News from ANDREW KING (Mt 80-85) who has an enviable career running a cocktail business (Funkin Ltd) which he sold to AG Barr Plc in 2015.

Married for 25 years with three children, Andrew is still in regular contact with a number of OWs and their families, including MIKE KIRKHAM (S 80-85) and RUPERT KING (Mt 79-84), and he recently bumped into RICHARD DARWIN (T 81-86) – a perfect group of OWs to get together and return for an OW event!

ROGER THOMAS QC (M 67 – 72) got in touch to let us know of his recent judicial move to take up post as The Recorder of Sheffield for the next two years before he retires. Roger has moved from Bradford and would be very keen to make contact with any Sheffield OWs. Roger can be reached by email at rogerthomasqc@ntlworld.com

Upon leaving school, DAVID NEWTON (Pt 72-77) joined the Royal Navy, completing over 33 years service, in which time he undertook many rewarding roles.

David began as a small ships’ navigator in Hong Kong, before training as a Lynx pilot on frigates and destroyers. At RAF Cranwell, David ran the Royal Navy aptitude testing, with his final posting to Muscat in Oman as Naval and Air Attaché within the British Embassy. He is currently still in Muscat, and CEO of a small defence and security related business. Keen to hear from any friends from his era, David’s email is david_newton22@hotmail.com

An update from CRAIG WALKER (M 02-06), who has now completed the Shell Prelude FLNG featured in last year’s News. Craig is looking forward to a new challenge in Dubai, where he will be moving into the world of Health & Safety for Middle East and Africa with his company Lloyds Register.

OW News Congratulations to OLLIE KAIPER-LEACH (T 09-14), whose performances are getting him noticed in all the right circles! Ollie has been accepted into the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama to take an MA in Music Theatre, and has also been nominated for a Manchester Musical Award (MMA) for his performance in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Good to hear from ROSIE SLOSEK (née Croucher) (D 94-96) who got in touch to let us know that she is now living and working in London as a Business Finances Mentor.

News from SIMON TURNER (Pt 86-91) who, since leaving the College, completed an Engineering degree at Brunel University, before going on to work within the family businesses involving industrial engineering products. He is in regular contact with JAMES EVERS (P 86-91) who now lives in Australia, and has met ROBERT ASHTON (P 88-93) and FRASER CUTTLE (S 89-93) on a few occasions. He regularly races Citroën 2cv’s and was second in the championship in 2011. He has completed ten 24 hour races in the UK and Spa in Belgium, winning two of them at Snetterton.

IAN CHURCH (S 74-77) lives in Towcester and is MD of Snows Timber. He is a keen supporter of Northampton Saints which he confesses can be hard work at times!

Tennis and sailing feature highly in the life of MARTIN FARNWORTH (M 65-70). Sailing the Atlantic in a 31ft yacht, and touring the West Indies after graduating from Leeds University sparked a passion for sailing which continues to this day. Martin spent his career working in various financial service businesses, before setting up on his own in 1996. Martin has three children and two grandchildren, but sadly lost his wife Jennifer recently to cancer.

After graduating from the University of Sheffield in 2009 with a degree in French and Hispanic Studies, LEE BIRCH (P 00-05), moved to London to work in international recruitment, before setting up his own business co-founding Thor Companies Ltd in 2012. The company now employs 25 people across three international offices, and Lee recently relocated to New York to open the first office in the US. Lee’s brother DARREN BIRCH (P 97-02) is happily married with two daughters, who Lee loves spending time with, although sadly it’s Facetime only at the moment!

OW BRUCE NEWSOME, Ph. D (P 1985 – 1990) is celebrating the release of his book in January 2018, ‘Countering New(est) Terrorism: HostageTaking, Kidnapping, and Active Violence — Assessing, Negotiating, and Assaulting’. OW News An update from TIM BROOKE (M 77-79) who has spent over 30 years in hospitality management, the last 23 years of which were spent in Jersey.

Since April 2016 he has been Group General Manager of La Place Hotel & Country Cottages and La Haule Manor, currently ranked No 1 and 2 hotels in Jersey and the Channel Islands.

News from MALCOLM LE BAS (S 55-59) who retired as a Senior Partner in a large firm of solicitors 11 years ago. Malcolm has since kept himself busy in the local community, most recently as Chairman of the highly successful Mayflower Theatre. Malcolm played cricket and squash for the Trojans Club in Southampton, and recently celebrated his Golden Wedding Anniversary with wife Sue.

TOM SORSBY (Pt 13-15) continues to impress within GB Hockey, playing as part of the GB Development Squad, including training on occasions with the Senior squad. The summer was busy with the U21 International Test Series and the U21 European Tournament in Valencia.

Tom is currently studying at the University of Nottingham.

Congratulations to JACK RICHARDS (T 11-16) who has been selected to be a member of the England Shooting Team. He will be competing in the World Championships in Australia in March 2018 where we wish him all the best.

2016/17 was a fun year for KEN HOLMES (M 57-61), as he spent 12 months as President of the Rotary Club of Chichester. Their charitable works help one family or individual each day in any number of different ways, and the fundraising events to enable such work are varied. In May, the club completed a 170 mile charity ride to Chartres and to cap his year, Ken has agreed to abseil down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth. They run tea dances and flower arranging demonstrations, a skittles and quiz league, all successful in raising much needed funds.

Congratulations to FRASER MOUNTFORD (M 06-09) who graduated from the University of Aberystwyth in July with a First-Class Honours Degree in Accounting.

Celebrating the consecration of PETE WILCOX (Pt 75-80) as Bishop of Sheffield at York Minster on 22 June 2017 brought together a gathering of OWs from the same vintage. In attendance were; ANDY BROOKES (P 75-80), PETER HANSON (Pt 75-80), RIK THOMAS (P 75-80), JACK BUCKNER (T 75-80), NORMAN STARKS (P 75-80) and JONATHAN CHAFFEY (S 75-80) (not pictured).

OW GO NAKAZAWA (T 96-99) got in touch to let his old school friends know what he’s been up to.

Go now lives in Tokyo, and after getting married in December 2012, he and his wife welcomed their first child in June 2015.

Congratulations to KATIE WALTER (G 07-11) who got married at St Bartholomew’s Church, Sutton cum Lound, Retford on 27 May 2017. The marquee reception took place at Katie’s family home and she and her new husband Daniel spent their honeymoon in Dubai and Mauritius.

After working for 37 years for Rothschild Bank International Limited, PETER SIDEBOTTOM (Mt 69-74) retired as an Assistant Director in 2016. His interest in singing led Peter to meet his wife, bassoonist Jean Owen, and together they live on the island of Guernsey with their two sons. In addition to continuing his choral singing, Peter has taken up sailing and motor boating, and more recently, road cycling.

Ensuring trans world adventures for their family, the McFerran clan continue to spread themselves around the globe! GEORGE MCFERRAN (Pt 88-93), having spent three years in London, is now heading to San Jose, California to work on a new project with Dice Holdings. JACK MCFERRAN (Pt 90-95) remains in Hong Kong where he works for Goldman Sachs and lives with his wife Tania and their there children. Finally, TOM MCFERRAN (Pt 97-02) lives in London with his new wife Emma after their wedding last August. Tom works for Invesco and is pictured here on his wedding day.

Congratulations to JOHN WILKINSON (S 77-79), who finally tied the knot with his partner Veronique on 1 November 2016 on Table Mountain, Cape Town. After a ‘brief’ courtship of just 19 years, the couple married in front of two witnesses and enjoyed the best day of their lives! They now live in Veronique’s home in Belgium and we wish them all the very best for their future together.

OW News News from BILL KIME (SH 65-68). Since leaving the school, Bill worked briefly in game management in Lincolnshire, and as an instructor for two years at the West London Shooting Grounds in Northolt. He then emigrated to Canada in 1974 as a shooting instructor, continuing to teach there for just over a year or so. Since 1975 he has been with Waddingtons, an auction house based in Toronto, where he is currently the senior auctioneer and decorative arts specialist (although still shooting and fishing when he can). Bill lives with his wife, the artist Laura Shepherd, on a small idyllic island in Toronto harbour, where they have brought up their two, now grown children. Bill says, “I feel I’ve been very fortunate; I have no idea what’s next, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Congratulations to OW ANDREW STIRLINGMARTIN (PT 03 – 08) who recently got engaged to his partner Emma Oxenbridge. The couple are due to tie the knot in sunnier climates this August in Portugal. We look forward to seeing the photos!

After a vast amount of overseas work and travel, JEREMY BELL (T 65-71) has now settled in Newcastle upon Tyne with his wife Setsuko and two daughters. Jeremy joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1974 and saw service in The Netherlands, Bahrain, Vietnam, Japan, Botswana and Kenya whilst travelling to many other countries in his 34 year diplomatic career.

His favourite posting was to Vietnam in 1982 when there were fewer than two dozen British citizens in the whole country. His last overseas posting, to Nairobi, saw him appointed as a UK Permanent Representative to the United Nations, heading our Africa UN office. His final years in London were spent in the Afghanistan and Iraq departments and, finally, as Head of the Global Consular Crisis Planning team. We were thrilled to welcome Jeremy back to the college at the start of the year for a visit.

Congratulations goes to OW MIKE PALMER (S 1998 – 2003) and his wife Jen, who have just launched their new business making craft cocktail bitters. Having travelled the world together for almost ten years, and acquiring a bar full of wild potions, they had yet to come across a Britishmade craft cocktail bitters. The Old Worksopian / 2018

T

he 1960s were a time of change at Worksop as everywhere else. When I arrived in 1962, the shadow of recent history hung over both the country and the College. When JFK was elected, it seemed like a breath of fresh air, and a catalyst for change, however we were then plunged into the Cuban Missile Crisis. I recall discussing, somewhat overdramatically, whether we were all to be blown out of our beds on the onset of WW3! Not long after came the assassination of JFK. We were in prep at around 6.30pm when a prefect came down to break the news to the supervising prefect. What a time to be living in during such formative years.

On the music scene, the Beatles broke through, together with the Rolling Stones, a revolution in music compared to what had recently followed the early surge of Rock `n` Roll. The two English bands divided many of the College students, but the more discerning of us heard a strange voice coming from across the Atlantic; a voice that had something to say to those who wanted to listen, and there were many of those.

When someone decided to try and form a Folk Music Club, Bob Dylan was already moving on to more surreal and abstract songs, backed by a band of rock musicians.

Father Tonkin was approached and let the fledgling Folk Club meet in his room to listen to the likes of Sydney Carter and Joan Baez, but the real agenda was to get to see Dylan on his 1966 tour. Amazingly, Father Tonkin obliged and booked tickets for around 20-25 of us to attend the Dylan concert at the Gaumont Theatre in Sheffield on 16 May 1966. It was a Monday and CCF took place that afternoon; it was bizarre to follow that by piling into a coach and setting off to Sheffield.

As has been documented countless times since, the first half was Bob Dylan on solo acoustic guitar. Gone though were the so called 'protest songs` he had written in the early 60s, and which he had performed on his tour the previous year, giving way to the debut of such songs as `Visions of Johanna` and `Desolation Row`. These were warmly received, but there was some tension in the air, knowing what was to come in the second half.

Dylan was back after the interval with a five-piece rock group (later known as The Band). I suppose none of us Worksopians in attendance had ever attended a rock concert before, but this was some way to start!

Making very loud music unlike anything any one had heard previously, Dylan ignited the controversy with songs which nevertheless were sensational. The `folk purists` were soon heckling and slow hand-clapping and many walked out (this was the day prior to the iconic moment in rock history with the shout of `Judas` the following night in Manchester). After the gig, a bit shell shocked I think, it was back on the bus for the return to Worksop.

Many thanks to Father Tonkin (who didn’t attend the gig himself!) for facilitating what I, and I suspect many of those in the party, will have etched on their memories ever since.

And strange, as I write, I'm due to see the 75 year old Dylan yet again on his endless tour in a couple of weeks.

im Foulds (T 09-14) is studying at the University of Durham. During his third year he took the opportunity to spend a year working abroad to gain some practical experience, an invaluable opportunity which he has been kind enough to share with us.

“Having completed two years of studying German from scratch at Durham University, the time to move abroad and put those skills into practice came round very quickly.

I write this sitting in the corner of a staffroom, in a typical German secondary school, in a small town called Alzey, Rheinland-Pfalz. I arrived in Germany in late August and started my role at the school as the English Language Assistant that September. Although it seems strange to be back in the school environment so soon after leaving it, the way in which it works here is fairly different.

There are 1,400 pupils, 120 staff, limited sport, and little in the way of extra-curricular activities, something I’m not overly used to. Nevertheless, it has been great fun getting to know the pupils, teaching English conversational classes, as well as having the chance to conduct full lessons. There is however, a strong amount of music here, and I have been lucky enough to be asked to play my trumpet in the school Big Band and Rock Band.

Despite a lack of sport at the school, I am fortunate to be in a town which, despite its size, has a strong hockey club. I am currently playing for the Mens’ 1st in a southern German Hockey league, playing against clubs such as Mainz, Ludwigshafen and Wiesbaden. I also coach the “minis”, six, seven year olds, twice weekly, which is certainly an experience! Everyone at the club has been extremely welcoming to me, and it really has been the best way to get to know people and feel part of the town.

Two weeks ago there was a typical German festival in town, where we opened up a stand selling food and drinks. Working there for a few nights was really beneficial for my language skills, and also meant I met a whole range of new people. Alzey is also surrounded by endless vineyards, so as well as making the most of the wine, I have loved running in the local area and exploring on my bike.

Our two week half-term begins tomorrow, and so I have plans to enjoy the time to travel around Germany. Having already been to Berlin and Hamburg, I’ve booked to visit Munich and Salzburg, and I hope to pay a visit to Freiburg in the region of the Black Forest.

My time here in Germany comes to an end in late February, but then I am off to France to undertake the second part of my year abroad. One thing’s for sure, studying languages is certainly providing me with some amazing opportunities and experiences, which I am loving throwing myself into.”

The Brothers’ Golf Match 2017

A

fter not playing last year, the Brothers’ Golf Match returned to Fulford GC, York.

This has now become a long standing get together, a House match really between the Huddlestone brothers, William and Peter of School House, and Simon and Anthony Kettlewell of Portland.

We met up in early August on a pleasant breezy day, and a tight competitive tussle it proved to be from start to finish. All players had their moments, both good and not so good. Simon Kettlewell was certainly showing some new found power and accuracy, almost reaching the longest hole on the course in 2 shots (500 yards +). The lead switched from SH to Pt, never extending to more than the odd hole, but it has to be said, a slackly played 16th hole by the Kettlewells allowed the Huddlestones to edge ahead. A magnificent birdie four down the last from the senior Huddlestone, produced a fitting grandstand finish to a cracking contest.

Afterwards we enjoyed the traditional chat over a couple of drinks, discussing important matters of the day, like cricket. I know I speak for all four of us when I say how lucky we are to enjoy an afternoon of sport in the company of people who perhaps don’t take themselves too seriously in this dramatic modern society.

No selfies and you won’t find us on Facebook or tweeting, because this lovely little get together doesn’t need any dressing up.

It is just right!

id you know we have an extensive archives collection here at Worksop College and Ranby House, largely down to the donations from our alumni. The archives contain a large number of artefacts, documents and photographs relating to the history of the school.

As part of this year’s programme of events, we are looking at hosting a number of evenings for OWs to visit and enjoy the extensive collection we hold, whilst catching up with old friends.

We are passionate about preserving our history and are always looking to add to the archives, so please do bear us in mind the next time you are having a clear out.

I

n February of last year, at the age of 26, Joe Root (Pt 06 – 08) became the 80th man to captain the England Cricket Team; a fantastic honour and achievement for Joe, and a proud moment for Worksop College.

However, as John Taylor (SH 47-51) pointed out, Joe isn’t the first OW to captain a major England sporting team. Step forward England Rugby captain, Norman Macleod Hall (S 36-43), also known as ‘Nim’.

Nim entered the Prep School in 1936, and by 1938 he was Captain of the school rugby team, unbeaten through the eight matches they played. The following year brought his debut in the 1st XV aged just 15. By 1941 he was a key member of the team, winning a phenomenal 11 out of 11 matches.

Captain for the 1942 season, Nim took them to a second successive unbeaten season, where he was selected as Captain of the Northern Public Schools’ XV, leading them to victory against the South. Under his captaincy, Worksop College also won the 1943 Schools’ 7-a-side competition.

On leaving Worksop, Nim enlisted in the Duke of Wellington’s regiment, then switched to the Royal Signals where he played representative rugby for the Army. Hoping for a medical career, he was welcomed to St Mary’s Hospital by the rugby mad Dean. He quickly became the star of an exceptional St Mary’s team, and in 1946 was chosen as the England outsidehalf in all six ‘unofficial’ victory internationals.

Nim made his England debut when the five Nations resumed in 1947, going on to captain the team in 1949. Nim’s value to England was unquestionable, and across the 9 seasons he was the most capped and highest scorer with 13 matches as captain.

Nim died at Paddington Hospital on 25 June 1972 and is buried at East Sheen cemetery. He left behind his wife Penny and son Ian.

We applaud Joe Root’s achievement... but he isn’t the first!

Immediately next to us are a table of eight Norwegians who all now live in France. The gentleman nearest to me leans back on his chair to take a photo on his phone, this tricky maneuver will get the entire group in the shot, so I shake his chair making him momentarily look worried. He gets the shot and some friendly banter ensues.

I comment on his excellent English. “Yes” he says, his name is “Mr Bjorn Larsen”, he is 86 (looks 56) and his grandfather used to be on the Norwegian whaling fleet.

His father, just after WWII, found himself sailing out of Hull docks, and as a boy, the young Bjorn was sent to a boarding school in Nottinghamshire. Yes you’re there before me, Mr Larsen is an Old Worksopian. You couldn’t make it up, they get everywhere!

He was in Mason and remembers receiving “six of the best” from the Headmaster at the time, Canon Molony. He loved “rugger” as he called it, escaped “downtown” for a glass of beer (punishable by immediate expulsion in those days), and generally had a great time. On leaving the College, he was accepted by four universities; Wisconsin, Cambridge, one in Switzerland and Manchester.

He went on to have a full and varied life and career, but attributes a lot of his success down to the confidence he gained during his time at Worksop.

“It’s a small world” as the cliché goes, but even smaller still if you are lucky enough to be an Old Worksopian.”

Obituaries It is with sadness that we learn of the death of the following Old Worksopian members. We pass on our sincere condolences to their family and friends.

We were saddened to learn of the sudden death in January 2015 of GORDON (TIM) ASHMORE (SH 53-57) who, after leaving the College, studied medicine at the University of Sheffield.

After qualifying in 1964, Tim worked for two years in Africa, before returning to Sheffield and in to general practice. He became a Locum GP around the country, including in an American Air Force base in Norfolk, and a maximum security prison in Warwickshire. An avid rugby and cricket fan, Tim also enjoyed spending time with his devoted wife Pam, three children and seven grandchildren. He is sorely missed.

After leaving the College, Zygmunt moved to London for a short period, and then in 1949 to Argentina, before settling in California where he graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Zygmunt married in 1970, and he and his wife Marianne had two children. He enjoyed travelling and skiing and spending time with his family.

After a long illness, HARRY WATSON (Mt 55-59) sadly died on 9 May 2017. His old school friends Peter McKenzie (T 55-59) and Chris Hargreaves (P 54-59) were able to visit him regularly and attended his funeral. Harry was a talented surveyor, as well as an estate agent and property developer. He was also a Senior Freemason, holding high Provincial Honours.

Harry leaves a widow, four children and a number of grandchildren.

All members of the Worksop College community were shocked and saddened to hear of the death of GRAHAM SHARPE (SCR 67-84) in March 2017. Graham was an inspirational chemistry teacher and also Master in Charge of squash, but perhaps his greatest contribution to the College was his years as Housemaster of School House. Graham left Worksop and moved to Trent College where he became 2nd Master, however, he continued his involvement with Worksop becoming a member of the OW Lodge. Graham’s funeral was attended by a number of current and former members of staff and pupils.

Obituaries We were saddened to hear of the passing of OWs MR COTTERILL (P 1941 – 1948), and ERIC MARSHALL WINKS (SH 47-53); along with PAUL PATCHETT (P 47-55) who died after a brave battle with cancer.

Thank you to Bill Bradshaw (SH 52-54) for passing on the sad news of the sudden death of his former School House member, JOHN SAVAGE (SH 52-54) on 21 March 2017. After leaving the College, John joined the family farming and butchering business which he continued with great success.

Anthony Young (T 57-60) kindly advised us of the sad death of his friend MICHAEL HAITH (Mt 57-60) on 7 November 2016. Mike had lived in Tenerife for over 30 years where he co-founded the Tenerife Royale Estate Agents in 2001, creating a company which was synonymous with all that is excellent in the real estate world on the island. Mike was a keen golfer and will be missed for his great sense of humour, as well as his professional integrity. He leaves behind his long-term partner Lynda and two grown-up sons.

It is with deep regret that David Evans (S 53 – 56) got in touch to inform us of the sudden and unexpected death of his fellow classmate CHARLES ASHDOWN (SH 52 – 57) who passed away last October.

It was with great sadness that Richard Hooper (M 61-64) informed the OW Society of the death of his brother JOHN (MARTIN) HOOPER (M 47-54) in June, just a month prior to his 80th birthday. After leaving Worksop, Martin trained as a Chartered Accountant where after qualifying, travelled to Melbourne for a two year secondment with Price Waterhouse. There he met his wife and decided to settle in Australia permanently, moving on from Price Waterhouse and eventually becoming Head of Finance at La Trobe University.

The onset of Muscular Dystrophy caused mobility difficulties around the time of his retirement in 1995, but he defied the doctor’s prognosis and was only confined to a wheelchair for the last five years of his life. Martin is survived by his wife, two children, two grandchildren, and of course Richard, who holds many happy and treasured memories of his brother.

Thank you to Geoff Newton (M 55-60) for advising the Society of the death of GARTH DRABBLE (SH 39-42) in November 2016. Garth studied to become a surveyor and oversaw the construction of many roads in Nottinghamshire, as well as Teeside where he moved. He was proud to be awarded the OBE in 1990 for his involvement in many highways schemes, including the A19 and A66. Garth is survived by his wife and leaves three children and six grandchildren.

Adele Furness, daughter of JOHN FURNESS, wrote to tell us of her father’s passing at the age of 92. John was a member of School House between 1940 – 1942 and always reflected on his time at Worksop with happy memories. In more recent years he attended some Old Worksopian functions with his old friend Geoff Biggin who passed away in 2012. As a farmer's son, John also wanted to farm and, after leaving Worksop, went to work for two arable farmers in the Tuxford area to gain experience of machinery and arable farming.

After working in Nottinghamshire he went to Broomfield Agricultural College near Derby for one year. He then married Doreen and set up dairy farming in the Peak District between Matlock and Bakewell, where he remained for 69 years. A hard working and ambitious man, John gained a tremendous amount of pleasure and satisfaction from his farming career. John farmed for over 30 years with his son Martin with whom he had a very amicable working relationship. Martin also attended Worksop in Portland House, but sadly he passed away in 2009. Martin's eldest son Edward took over running the farm when he was just 23 due to Martin's illness. John was extremely proud of Edward for taking on such a huge task and pleased that the farm was able to continue in the family. John also left a great grandson, aged two years, who is already showing a healthy interest in tractors! John and Doreen's leisure activities included hunting with the High Peak Hunt in the Peak District, and competition carriage driving with a single pony (a hobby of Doreen's, but one which John was more than happy to participate in during he and his wife’s later years). Sadly Doreen passed away in 1992.

Obituaries Former Mountgarret pupil HUGH WALTERS (48-58) passed away in February 2015. Hugh’s career as an actor began in 1965 and he went on to have three roles in Doctor Who over the years, as well as many other TV appearances. Credits include Heartbeat, Rumpole of the Bailey, Z Cars and regular appearances in The Russ Abbot Show.

Many thanks to the OWs who advised the Society of the sad deaths of BILL THOMPSON (Mt 48-51) and BILL WRIGHT (S 48-55), pictured below - both of whom had been members of the OW Lodge over the years. Bill Wright lived in Hathersage with his wife Gillian and family. He served a short commission with the Army before going on to work in the insurance industry in Sheffield. He was past Captain of Sickleholme Golf Club, as well having a long time interest in Freemasonry, being Secretary of the OW Lodge for many years. Heavily involved in Hathersage village activity, Bill was a prominent member of the amateur dramatics society, and also spent many happy hours at the local primary school helping the children with computing classes.

Other interests included skiing, walking, and eventually crown green bowls. At his funeral, men were asked to wear a bow tie – his trademark – and many did so, including a majority of sporting OW versions. Bill will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Mark Maclaverty (Pt 69 – 74) informed the society of the sad passing of his brother ROSS MACLAVERTY (Pt 64 – 69). Our thoughts and well wishes are with all of Ross’ family.

The Marshall family are saddened to announce the death of MICHAEL MARSHALL (M 41-48) on 23 October 2016. Michael trained as a solicitor and worked in both private practice and in industry throughout his career. After retiring in 1993, he was able to enjoy his love of classical music and travel, as well as spending time with his wife Julia, three children and four grandchildren.

The College and OW Society were very sad to hear of the death of CHRISTIAN THOMAS (S 05-09) in December 2016 and PETER FROST (Mt 40-48) who passed away in April of last year.

We send our condolences to both families.

Thank you to Mike Benson (SH 43-46) for advising the Society of the death of PETER COLDREY (SH 35-44) who passed away peacefully at home in Abergavenny on 13 June 2017. Following in his father’s footsteps, Peter trained to be a doctor, and was a proud Yorkshireman, despite moving to Wales where he settled. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We were informed of the recent passing of MICHAEL LACEY TEMPLE (SH 48 – 51). Michael leaves behind his partner of 28 years, Alyson.

OW News Philip (Pip) Hayman (M 1942 – 1949) informed us of the sad death of friend and OW, ROBERT (BOB) HANSON MILLER (SH 46 – 50) on 18 November last year at the age of 85. Philip said, “I have had the privilege of knowing Bob since we were both thirteen year olds at Worksop, a long time ago. Those were austere days and food wasn’t abundant at school.

Bob realised that he had the ability to run well at long distances and put that ability to good use.

He would ‘run his heart out’ to win races for his House and earn privileges like staying in bed later and getting more food. A good business head even at that age! We lost touch after school and renewed our friendship when Bob joined the Old Worksopian Lodge.” After National Service, Bob joined the family business and transformed a small town shop into the largest independent retailer of consumer electronics in the UK, employing over 800 people. He was married to Pamela and leaves behind three children and seven grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

We were very sad to hear of the death of SAM KEITH WADDINGTON (T 43-51) in December 2016. He sent both his sons Sam and Mark to the College, and kept in touch with old school friend Ray McGill (T 47-52) who also attended his funeral. He is greatly missed by all his family.

We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of REX BLUNDELL (T 44 – 46) on 8 December last year. Rex leaves behind his devoted wife Florence, and a big void in his family’s life.

Guy Blackburn (P 39-43) belatedly reported the death of his older brother BRIAN BLACKBURN (P 39-42) in October 2012. Brian is survived by his son and daughter and two grandchildren.

Obituaries

Current President of the Old Worksopian Golf Society Nick Leefe (P 55 – 60), informed us of the sad passing of former Honorary Secretary, DAVID PAYNE (S 60 – 64) in August of last year.

A few months prior to his death, David had organised an excellent golf day at his home club in Otley. Sadly this was the last time many of his friends saw him as he fought an aggressive battle with cancer after a very short stay in hospital.

David made a career in banking after leaving school and as part of his training, spent 2-3 years in Africa before coming back home and working in the Leeds area. David was very much involved in charity work, in-house hospital radio, commentating on local amateur rugby events, and a keen member of Leeds’ Musical Society.

Martin Claxton wrote to inform us of the death of his Father GEOFFREY HAROLD CLAXTON, who passed away on 8 December last year, just a few days short of his 86th birthday. Geoff was a pupil at the College between 1945 and 1948 and belonged to Mason House. He had been suffering from vascular dementia for two to three years and died peacefully in his sleep after contracting a chest infection.

e know that education plays an important role in laying the foundation of a person’s path in life. So, access to excellent teaching, the right support and challenge, and the opportunity for every child to realise their potential is what we aim for.

Through the generosity of our donors, the school has established a permanent endowment fund that has provided a number of scholarships and bursaries for particularly able and deserving students. But we want to do more. Marking the departure of our current Headmaster, The Gavin Horgan Bursary Fund is an ongoing programme that has been set up to increase our bursary funds, allowing even more pupils to benefit from the excellent education Worksop College and Ranby House can provide.

Making the scheme a reality will rely on the generosity of our OWs in the form of regular, modest, monthly donations. We are looking to recruit 1,000 members to the scheme, each gifting ÂŁ10 per month over the course of a year, providing 10 deserving children the opportunity to receive full bursaries.

T he Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a youth organisation run within Worksop College by Major Simon Payne. Sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, it is an engaging, challenging and rewarding Contingent that can make a decisive contribution to the development of students. The CCF aim to provide:

A challenging, engaging and rewarding training programme that is led by students and supported by staff (Officers)

Opportunities for experiences, successes and leadership

Development of discipline, self-reliance and community spirit

Each year the college hold their annual Inspection Day, a highlight of the CCF calendar and an opportunity for the cadets to show the assembled dignitaries, parents and visitors all that they have achieved during their training that year.

This year we will be hosting an unofficial inspection on Monday 17 September (provisional date) and would like to extend the invite to our OW community. The event will provide ample opportunities to meet our current CCF contingent, whilst enjoying the activities going on during the day.

We are particularly keen to establish links with those OWs, both current serving and former members of the forces, and look at ways in which we can work together. We see the experience of our OWs as invaluable in inspiring our current cadets. Breaking Boundaries in the Construction Industry T

“I feel that during my time at Ranby and Worksop, whether you were male or female, there were never any boundaries” 34

he world of construction is an industry that has notoriously failed to attract women, even within the roles that are deemed less physical.

Given the changing attitudes towards gender equality, we caught up with former student Katie Slaney (née Walter), a Construction Manager for Speedclad and one of the women playing her part to change the face of a historically male-dominated environment.

Deputy Head Girl at Worksop College, Katie was a member of Gibbs between 2006 – 2011, after completing her junior years at Ranby. Upon leaving school Katie went on to study Mechanical Engineering at Hull University, where she graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree. Katie then went on to complete a part-time masters degree in Project Management at Sheffield Hallam, while forging a successful career in the construction industry.

With the male:female ratio in construction pretty low, what made you decide upon a career in the industry?

I have always been interested in pursuing a career which was more than just sitting behind a desk, I believe this was from spending the majority of my holidays outside on my parents’ farm, helping out, from parting fences at 10 years old to running the weight bridge at 16.

What does your job entail?

As a Construction Manager, I am involved in the facade element of a project; from the final stages of a tender process to when we hand over a completed element of a project. This means managing the design, procurement, manufacture, and installation of our element of works - at Speedclad that involves the glazing and glass door elements.

From initially choosing engineering, I then chose a Project Management Graduate Programme, and from there have progressed through the ranks from a Project Co-ordinator, to Project Manager, to Construction Manager - where I am today.

In order to complete these elements, I will attend pre-let meetings, design meetings, supplier meetings, programme meetings and site progress meetings, as well as weekly internal review meetings. The involvement can be very hands-on, but it means that I understand the whole process of the project, so can make the required decisions with knowledge of all elements.

What role did your time at Ranby House and Worksop College play in where you are today?

I feel that during my time at Ranby and Worksop, whether you were male or female, there were never any boundaries; this made my outlook different to many of my other peers. This meant that even though many people would associate an engineering degree or the construction industry with a male career choice, I never considered it that way.

I also feel that through the events and functions at Worksop College, I felt confident to talk to older and more successful individuals both in interviews, on-site and in the working environment, which have helped me break the boundaries of the industry Why do you think construction is an industry that struggles to attract women?

The construction industry is still very sexist in its attitudes towards women, especially at a site level. An example of this is there is often only one female toilet on site - which is either locked, in the main contractor’s office or used as a cleaning cupboard. At a site level, it is still nearly 100% male which can be daunting. I have been on a large construction site where there has been 1000+ men and under ten females, that is less than 1%!

Also, it is not a very glamorous job; a hi-vis vest, hard hat and safety boots are never going to win any fashion awards. Saying that, when I am not on-site, I will wear dresses and heels to the office or supplier meetings, as I feel it’s extremely important to be yourself even in a male environment.

Whose responsibility is it to educate women on the opportunities available within the industry?

The industry needs to focus on getting females involved at an early age so that they can make the right career choices at an earlier stage.

I think it is everyone's responsibility, from teachers in a classroom to parents when talking about career options, even how the media portrays the construction industry. Until it is seen as ‘the norm’ for a female to become a Site Manager in construction, I think we all need to push forward opportunities for girls to be exposed to careers in the industry.

What would you say to any women considering a career in construction?

I would say that she needs to enter the industry with her eyes open! The industry is not perfect, it has its flaws and will not change overnight. She may encounter situations where comments are made, but I can promise her for every comment which is made there will be two or three times when she will change someone’s opinion on females in the industry or prove someone wrong.

I can honestly say there is no better feeling than when someone assumes you are only in the meeting to make tea or take notes, for it to turn out you are the manager who called the meeting to talk about their issues on site!

Where do you aspire to be in ten years’ time?

In ten years’ time, I hope to still be working in the industry as a Construction Manager on large £10+ million projects, whilst juggling having a family at home.

ome to seven million people on the South China Sea coast, Hong Kong is a city of colourful history, diverse culture and East-meets-West character.

During the October half term holiday Danusia Sawoscianik-Murray (former Gibbs Assistant Housemistress, Tutor and Art Teacher), along with Wendy Bain (former Tutor in Portland and Pelham, Gibbs Housemistress, English and Drama Teacher, and Archivist) went on a private trip to the vibrant city to catch up with some of our OWs who live out there.

The pair had a wonderful time catching up with 21 of our former students; experiencing the rich Chinese culture and gaining a better understanding of the heritage of the homeland of some of our former students. The trip was a joyful celebration of friendship across the world, with lots of laughter, and some tears, as they shared memories of their time together at the College.

s many of you will have heard by now, the end of the summer term will see us say a sad farewell to our Headmaster Gavin Horgan, along with Deputy Head Jonathan Anderson and Headmaster of Ranby House, Christian Pritchard. Gavin will take up an appointment as Headmaster of Millfield School in Somerset, while Jonny has been appointed as Headmaster of Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh. Christian will move down to Northamptonshire where he will take up the position as the next Headmaster of Beachborough School. It is a testament to our school that we attract such strong candidates and that they move on to such significant posts of promoted responsibility.

Worksop College under Gavin’s leadership, coupled with the support of Christian Pritchard at Ranby, has developed from two separate entities into a thriving 3-18 continuum with a relentless focus on ensuring that every pupil achieves his or her personal best, both in the early years at Ranby House and through to the end of the Sixth Form at Worksop.

Gavin’s legacy also includes a number of other major achievements; the move of Years 7 and 8 to the senior school site, the construction of a new boys’ boarding house, and the restructuring and refurbishment of existing buildings to ensure that the school is fit for 21st century education.

Gavin commented, “Alison and I are very happy here in Worksop, indeed, it is home, and it has been a privilege to play a part in this school’s development at such an exciting time. I am ambitious for Worksop College and for Ranby House, and also for myself and my family and I’m sure you understand that this is an opportunity that I must take.

Change can be disconcerting but it is also an opportunity for rejuvenation and fresh thinking of problems old and new. Thank you for your support so far and I look forward to seeing Worksop’s continued journey.”

Gavin went on to add, “Worksop College has been lucky to have Jonny as Deputy Head since 2011 and he has been a leader throughout many of the most significant changes during that time, but much more than that, he has been a key figure within our community.”

He followed this by saying, “Christian has been instrumental in introducing the Learner Profile spanning ages 3 – 18 and, along with Jeremy Harper, David Thorpe and Steph Payne, has transformed the teaching and learning experience by our younger pupils.” Christian will be succeeded by David Thorpe, currently in post as Deputy Head of Ranby.

All three have had a tremendous impact on the school since joining, and we wish them luck in their new roles.

We are resolutely committed to ensuring a smooth transition for pupils, staff and parents and the Governors are well underway in the process of finding first-class successors.

OW Events 2018 We are always looking at ways to help reunite you with old friends and relive your school days. Below is a list of just some of the events we have in the diary so far for 2018.

Our events calendar will continue to evolve over the course of the year and will be kept fully updated at oldworksopians.com. Please do let us know of any events you would like to see.

OW DORM RUN Join us on Saturday 24 March as we invite our OWs to retrace steps (all 3.6 miles of them) and take on the historic Dorm Run. Relive your past taking part in one of the original sporting events here at Worksop, first coined in the late 19th century. The Dorm Run is still a large part of life at Worksop and The OW Dorm Run will take place the Saturday before the school’s annual run on the following Wednesday. Tickets will be priced at £20 and include a medal, hog roast and hot drink.


