All About The Joseph Lappin Centre!

T his time of year is a very busy one for us as we prepare for The Joseph Lappin Festival on Sunday 10th June 12-4pm in Doric Park, Old Swan.

The festival provides an opportunity for families, friends and neighbours to have fun in their own community, creating lasting memories. This year will be no exception, with go karts, inflatable obstacle courses, balloon making, Zorb balls, as well as arts & crafts stalls. Ever fancied having your portrait drawn… well now is your chance! There’s lots more including the usual delicious food, live music and dancing.

We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

Our aims This year is the 10th anniversary of Joseph’s death and, sadly, many young lives are still being needlessly lost as a result of knife crime.

The Centre, opened in March 2013, aims to keep Joseph’s memory alive, raising awareness of knife crime and the devastating effect it has on families and communities, whilst also providing opportunities for residents of all ages to reach their potential, fulfil their ambitions and enjoy life. We provide opportunities for our young people to try new things and receive advice and guidance along the way, as they transition to adulthood.

What we do?

The answer is, ‘all sorts!’ The centre is host to various organisations: Merseyside Expanding Horizons, Deaf Active, Priority Youth, Active Fitness, Out of This World Nursery, Slimming World, Joe’s Café, Acting Angels, Everton Development Trust, LiveWire Health Project, and Connexions. The centre is also home to the Duke of Lancashire Detachment, the army cadet section that Joseph was part of for several years, children aged 12+ are welcome.

Digital Training We were lucky enough to secure Mayoral Ward Hardship Funding from local ward councillors Joanne Calvert, Peter Brennan & Gary Millar, which will enable us to update our IT suite and deliver training to Universal Credit claimants to ensure they have the skills required to comply with new regulations being introduced in this area in December 2018.

Joe’s Café The community café is under new management and has a mouth-watering selection of dishes, ranging from Joe’s Full English, to afternoon tea with jam & cream scones & Liverpool Judy (you’ve got to come in to find out what this is…but it is gorgeous!) All at very reasonable prices.

The community of Old Swan is incredibly supportive of us here at The Joseph Lappin Centre — thanks to your support we received £2k from Tesco’s Bags for Help to carry out much needed improvements.

Local History

Hoult’s Corner: Top of the Shops

L

ocal entrepreneur James Hoult was born in 1806 to a shop-keeping family.

In the Victorian census of 1841 we find James as publican of the Old Swan Coaching Inn (where Costa coffee shop stands, previously the Red House pub). Ellen, his wife, acted as Post Mistress. By the 1851 Census, the Hoult family had moved out of the area to start a new trade as tenant farmers but returned in 1861, when James was aged 55, to a residence in Sandstone Road, Old Swan. The livestock from his farm near St Helens brought trade back to Old Swan as they were herded the 12 miles along the turnpike road (Broadgreen Road, then Pettycoat Lane), paying tolls at the toll gates, and then onto the Stanley Cattle Market and Abattoir.

Meanwhile two enterprising brothers, Richard and Paul Barker, also took a lead in our local economy.

Owners of the local quarries including the one beside St Oswald Street, they had plentiful supplies and sold to builders for housing, such as the properties on Sandstone Road, and for grand constructions such as Knotty Ash church in 1835, West Derby parish church in 1850, Old Swan Police station on Derby Lane, also built in 1850. What did they do with the big hole left in the ground? They filled it with tons of ice from nearby lakes in the winter and sold the ice for refrigeration in the summer to the big houses in the area. When that business faded, the land was bricked over.

Getting ready for change and demolition

The Hoults saw their opportunity, and by 1894 had built not just one, but several grocers on the land, as well as provision dealers and butchers on the corner of St Oswald Street. Photos show Hoult’s Hardware Store, Old Swan Potato Market, Old Swan Family Bakery, a café and a restaurant. The group of shops became the famous “Hoult’s Corner” and the name was emblazoned along the front in capital letters.

The Corner was demolished in 1930s to widen St Oswald Street and build St Oswald Gardens, the experimental communal flats, which lasted until 2002, in turn demolished for the large Tesco supermarket and car park.

Opticians Celebrates a Decade on the High Street O ld Swan Specsavers has celebrated serving local residents with the highest

quality of optical and audiology care by investing in a large-scale refurbishment programme.

More than £160,000 has been spent on an extensive update of the store, which will help to increase capabilities to provide an even better service for customers.

The store has now been extended to a second floor to include two further test rooms, staff facilities and a purpose built lab where the glasses are glazed.

Within Specsavers the store is now recognised as a “Centre of Excellence” for its service, with around 20 team members, including an apprentice, largely drawn from the local community.

Leanne King has recently qualified as a dispensing optician and there are other team members on

course to complete more professional training soon; additional skills that will improve service at the store even further.

Reading for all ages in Old Swan R hyme Time is a weekly children’s group held in Old Swan Library (term time only). The children are all smiles as they dance along to songs with actions, read stories with props and puppets, and enjoy a craft activity.

Volunteer Margaret Cooney leads the group.

Her training in early years speech and language development helps her give the very best introduction to social reading and she has been awarded the Lord Mayor’s Certificate of Recognition for her work.

Margaret says, “The difference from when a child starts at the group to when they leave is amazing to see; they learn so much. By the time they start school they already have key foundations in place.”

Margaret encourages reading skills development using repetition. “The more a child hears and sees a word,” she explains, “the more likely they are to remember it.” She encourages parents to read aloud to their children, as reading-speech is slower and clearer.

Jo Smith from Stoneycroft & Knotty Ash Children’s Centre explains. “Every child in England is entitled to a free Bookstart pack at 0-12 months and 3-4 years. The packs, gifted by BookTrust, the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, are distributed via health visitors and libraries across the country and include interactive storybooks, booklists, book-finders, activities and more. I want to make sure every child has the free books they are entitled to,” says Jo. “If they don’t have theirs, parents should visit the centre or contact me on 0151 233 4770.”

ld Swan Book Club reading in Old Swan doesn’t stop with the kids, though!

Old Swan Book Club for adults was launched in 2017 when founder Emma Prior wanted to meet up with other local fiction fans. Books clubs are a popular way to make new friends, try new genres, and explore new ideas.

“We made a dramatic entrance to the book club scene,” Emma says. “Seventy local residents signed up, and around fifteen make it regularly to the meetings. It’s proving to be so successful that we are looking for someone to open a day-time club and we also have plans to start a creative writing group.

Craft Cuisine at The Ale House

T

he Ale House Micropub & Kitchen is delighted to launch a delicious bespoke menu, with recipes incorporating our fine craft ales.

We have locally produced pies, filled to the brim with a variety of fillings and encased in a rich pastry.

Our Scouse has been infused with our lighter cask ales, such as the ever popular ‘Proper Job’, which enhances the flavour accordingly. Enjoy Scouse served in our specially designed ale infused bread bowls, accompanied with red cabbage & beetroot.

10 Years on…Remembering Joseph I n October 2008, Old Swan resident Joseph Lappin lost his life in a tragic and senseless knife-crime attack. He was just sixteen years old.

On the eve of the tragedy Joseph had travelled to another area of the city to support a friend’s band.

As he and his friends stepped outside of the youth club for a break they were set upon in an unprovoked and vicious attack by a feuding gang armed with batons, sticks, bottles, and the killer’s blade. Joseph received a stab wound that proved fatal and he died at the scene. His killer was sentenced to a minimum of 17 years behind bars for his crime. The weapon was never found.

Joseph was a conscientious young man who had a bright future ahead of him. A star pupil of St Oswald’s Primary School and then Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School, he achieved 11 GCSEs. As a dedicated member of the cadets, he planned to begin a career with the army. From an early age Joseph knew what he wanted to do with his life.

He was a kind and thoughtful son any family would be proud of, and who had nothing to do with crime.

We met with Joseph’s mum, Toni, who shared her reflections ten years on from her son’s death.

What is life like for you and your family now, 10 years on?

“In many ways what happened still seems like just yesterday. In my imagination Joseph is still the same age as when he died.

“To start with I lived in memories and that helped me.

It was like I was in a bubble. It brought me comfort to remember happy memories of the things we’d done together. But it gets harder as time moves on.

Now, I see friends whose children were the same age and have grown up. I see them getting jobs, getting married, even having children. I think to myself, ‘What would

Celebrations are tinged with sadness.”

Joseph’s death was as a result of knife crime.

What message do you have for anyone who carries weapons such as knives?

“You may think carrying a weapon means you’re protecting yourself, but you’re putting yourself in greater danger by carrying a knife. Think long and hard. Think of the effect on families. Think of the innocent people who are injured or killed. It could be your family having to face that loss.”

What does the Joseph Lappin Centre mean to you and your family?

“The centre keeps Joseph’s memory alive in the community. I felt so proud when our local councillors contacted me to suggest dedicating the centre to Joseph’s memory. It’s such a positive thing. Since it opened in 2012 it’s become such a hive of activity and it’s a great resource for the Old Swan community.”

The Joseph Lappin Festival is coming up.

Will you be there?

“We’re there every year and wouldn’t miss it.

Local councillors had the idea of a festival even before the community centre, and it’s become a much-loved event for the local community. It’s also an important fundraiser for the centre and for the Joseph Lappin Foundation.

We try to help children fulfil their dreams because Joseph wasn’t able to do that.”

How can the Old Swan community help?

“We urgently need to hear from any community minded tradespeople in the area who can help us with keeping the community centre in good repair. We desperately need a roofer, for example, to fix the leaks!”

A Day in the Life of a Specialist Nurse T his is Rob Jackson.

Rob has 21 years’ experience in Liverpool Royal Hospital Accident & Emergency Department.

Rob is someone whose services you hope you never need.

Rob and his team work tirelessly to save the lives of knife crime victims.

We met with him to find out more.

“When a patient arrives by ambulance, the paramedics have called ahead to give essential information and the team are ready and waiting.

There can be a team of up to ten experienced doctors and nurses at any one time working on a patient.

We have to act quickly. It’s a matter of life and death.

“The tragic death of Joseph Lappin prompted a rethink in how we tackle knife crime in the region.

I began delivering classes with the Youth Offending Service, but it was clear we needed to reach young people earlier. Now we’ve been into nearly every secondary school in Liverpool to inspire them to make right choices.

“I show them some very gory photos and I make no apology for this. Statistics show that fifty per cent of those who carry a weapon will be injured by their own weapon. A young person in a world where people are dealing drugs or hanging around in gangs is more likely to come into contact with weapons and the risk of injury or death increases. It is essentially down to luck as to whether or not you survive a knife attack. E

verton Development Trust (edt) is delivering foundation skills training on behalf of Liverpool Adult Learning Service, and other accredited courses, to adults at the Joseph Lappin Centre on Mill Lane in the heart of Old Swan.

The well-used Centre provides space for a variety of physical and social activities promoting community involvement. edt’s courses fit well with the events already on offer by providing a chance for adults to improve foundation skills i.e. maths, English and IT. edt’s training director, Bernard Jordan, who introduced and runs the courses said, “Signing up for a learning course can be daunting, especially for those who, for whatever reason, didn’t do so well at school. The Joseph Lappin Centre is ideal for edt’s use because local people know and trust the venue and feel safe in signing up for courses here.”

Lisa and Zoey are currently working to improve their maths skills. Mother of five Lisa wants to take up social work when she is confident with her maths and English. She missed a lot of schooling after a bad car accident. “I spent a lot of time in Alder Hey and was never able to go back into ordinary school, I feel bad not being able to help my kids with homework and things,” said Lisa. “I’m glad I signed up with edt.

It’s not like being in a classroom, you can work at your own pace. You don’t feel as though you are competing with others and Bernie is always willing to explain – sometimes for the tenth time,” she smiled.

Zoey is also working on her maths. She is now working at Level 2. “I work at Ronald McDonald House just now,” said Zoey. “I’ll be going to work later today. I enjoy my cleaning job but I’ve a back problem so I want to improve my CV with better certificates.” Zoey continues, “I don’t really know what I want to do at the moment but, with the encouragement I get from edt I know I’ll be well able to compete for a wider variety of jobs.”

As word spreads of edt’s presence at The Centre, some people are using the computers for other than foundation skills learning. Claire is working towards her European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). “I’m taking a Human Resource course,” said Claire, “but I’m hindered by my lack of computer skills. I came here just to learn the basics but now I’ve progressed to a formal ECDL course. I was really pleased to find that, not only could edt offer me this course, but they could do it cheaper than anyone else in Liverpool!”

The Friendly Church A ll Saints Church Stoneycroft on Broadgreen Road is a welcoming and friendly place for everyone with a varied and vibrant worship programme.

All Saints Church was consecrated by The Bishop of Chester in 1875 and has seen many modernisations over the years. In 2013 we extended the church to include a multi-functional space including kitchen and WCs and built a modern vicarage. We now have a church that has flexible spaces for worship, community and commercial activity, available for hire for events.

SEN Help from ADDvanced Solutions A utism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a person’s social, interaction and communication skills.

People with ASD can have problems with social interaction and communication. This does not always mean that they have difficulty with their language skills. It can present as difficulties with understanding non-verbal communication - for example, they might have difficulty in understanding or reading eye contact, facial expressions, body language, hand gestures or tone of voice.

The word ‘autism’ originates from the Greek, ‘autos’, which means ‘self’—not selfish, but the inability or difficulty in understanding other people’s emotions, point of view or beliefs. They may find it difficult to recognise sarcasm, jokes and sentences we use in the English language such as ‘pull yourself together’ and ‘it’s raining cats and dogs outside’. They may also have difficulty starting conversations or continuing a conversation unless they are discussing a topic that they are interested in.

Children with ASD can also present with rigid thinking, such as a need for routine and repetition.

Examples include putting their clothes on in the same order, eating the same foods, walking to school the same route and watching the same favourite film over and over again. If the routine is disrupted a ‘meltdown’ may occur which may be seen as negative behaviour, when in fact it is a lack of control of the situation and an increase in anxiety, with feelings of insecurity.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder can receive a medical diagnosis once assessment has been overseen by three professionals. Social skills development for the child or young person and parental understanding through learning programmes are essential for the family to identify strategies to make progress.

Phil’s Story: Fostering W hen men turn 40, it is traditional to have a midlife crisis. Some men start going to the gym and wearing age inappropriate clothes. Others get gripped by a malaise and a mourning for their lost youth.

I decided to become a foster carer.

More accurately, my wife suggested we explore the possibility of becoming a foster family.

My wife said she knew of an information meeting being run by The Council. Perhaps it’s typically male, but I tend to follow the path of least resistance and was happy to go along. I’d been on worst dates!

We had one little lad for 4 hours, one we have decided to keep permanently, and quite a few in between.

Fostering isn’t for everyone, but everyone should consider it before they decide it’s not for them.

The information we were given offended my sense of justice, but it was not enough to just feel pity. I had to show compassion and take action.

‘It’s not for everyone, but everyone should consider it.’

I was fairly sure it would never happen, but what if my kids had to go and live with strangers? What is it like for a young child to be taken to a stranger’s house and left there, perhaps forever?

I would want those strangers to be people like us.

I knew we would do our best to make the worst of all days as bearable as possible. I knew we could keep a child safe. We could provide food, a warm bed and some sort of reassurance.

My wife rang the council and registered our interest to become foster carers.

Six months later, we were approved to foster children between the ages of 4 and 6 on a short-term basis. 8 years on and we have fostered 5 separate children.

We organise trips to battle fields of Normandy

Over the last 107 years the choir has raised thousands of pounds to help local charities and deserving causes. In recognition of this we were granted the Freedom of the City in 2015.

If you enjoy singing and think that you would like to find your place in a male voice choir, then please come along to one of our Monday night rehearsals where you can share the fun and sing in one of the four voice-sections.

Previous experience is not essential and newcomers are guaranteed a very warm welcome. The rewards brought through singing and the strong camaraderie that exists within the choir are fulfilling and life-enhancing.

Woodlands Hospice is committed to delivering Specialist Palliative Care for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses in Old Swan and the surrounding areas. We honour people’s right to dignity and respect at whatever stage of their illness by our aim to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Caring for local people since 1996 To continue to provide our services free of charge we need to raise more than ÂŁ2,700 every day. We rely on the support of the local community through fundraising events, campaigns and donations. Your help is crucial in ensuring Woodlands Hospice continues to provide this much needed care in the future.

Forgetmenot appeal 2018

Celebrate the life of a loved one by dedicating a special forgetme-not flower. The flowers are individually hand crafted and painted and will be displayed in the hospice gardens during the summer months. Anyone who dedicates a flower will receive an acknowledgement letter along with a certificate of dedication through the post and you will also be invited to see them in place, before collecting and taking them home as a permanent reminder of someone special.
