STANDING ORDERS Many of our Standing Order payers have supported the Monmothian Charitable Trust by converting their donations through Gift Aid declarations and are now benefactors of the Trust. The response has been very encouraging, and of course provides additional income via tax refunds from the Inland Revenue.

It is hoped that all Standing Order payers will convert their donations to Gift Aid, thus enabling us to further assist pupils in a variety of different and meaningful ways.

MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT Many Old Monmothians enjoyed a wonderful day when the School celebrated its 400th anniversary with a service at St Paul’s Cathedral on the 19th of March. The pupils from all the Haberdashers’ Schools in Monmouth were transported to London by a fleet of coaches. One could not but be proud to have been part of those 400 years.

Several of our members were also present on the 17th of March when His Royal Highness, The Earl of Wessex, officially opened the new William Jones Building.

You really should see this to appreciate what has been achieved. Not only is it a splendid piece of architecture, entirely sympathetic to its surroundings, but the interior is a new world. A prospective parent visiting the School cannot fail to be impressed. This development is the most important for very many years.

The Club has launched ‘Connections at Monmouth’ - a new online service for those with an association with Monmouth School where you can register, book and pay for events, search for contemporaries and soon make donations securely.

It has been set up in celebration of the 400th Anniversary year in 2014.

Re-establishing CONNECTIONS

Now we look forward to the next phase of the Heart Project, which will do so much for the School. But of course this costs a great deal of money. A start has been made to raise this but there is still a long way to go. There are several other events throughout the year to celebrate our 400 years.

The Club itself was, of course, founded in 1886 and is now one of the oldest and most successful of its kind, as befits a 400-year old school. Our constant aim is to involve more and more Old Monmothians in its activities so why not come along to one of our varied occasions?

MEMORIES Tony (Anthony John) Morgan, (54-60) wrote that he will unfortunately miss the pre-1969 reunion because he will be in South Africa for the birth of a grandchild.

However, he attached a copy of a photo which might arouse interest. It shows the ‘Women of Canterbury’ in the School’s production of Murder in the Cathedral, in St Thomas’s Church, Overmonnow, some time in the late 1950s.

Our home ground is in Elstree, Hertfordshire – 30 mins by train from central London.

We welcome any Monmothian looking for some rugby and I’m sure they would enjoy being part of a Haberdashers’ club with fellow Haberdashers.

NEWS OF OLD MONMOTHIANS Bob Coombes (50-56) after leaving Monmouth, served in the British Army which took him to Singapore and, eventually, Australia.

In 1972, he visited Thailand on holiday, fell in love with the country, and ended up making it his second home. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Bob seized an opportunity in the growing tourism market and started the first direct food import business in Thailand - Choice Foods. Known to friends and colleagues as ‘Bangkok Bob’, he has since pioneered many innovations in the Thai food industry.

Bob is planning to be present at the reunion for pre-1969 leavers on April 27th.

Richard Booth (80-87), last year’s Club President, is now a QC, described by his Chambers as ‘a silk who has a nice touch with the tribunal.’ His specialist field is sport and healthcare and he both prosecutes and defends in those areas. Richard’s upwards achievements derive from enormous experience of all aspects of medical law coupled with a ‘popular, conversational style of advocacy.’

Warren East (73-80) was awarded a CBE in the New Year’s Honours List. As former CEO of ARM Holdings plc he helped build the company into one of the most successful tech businesses in the world. Its chips are used in billions of devices, including digital cameras and mobile phones. Warren retired from ARM in 2013 and is now a non-executive director with Dyson, BT and Rolls-Royce.

David Evans (57-64) has been heavily involved with the School’s programme of events commemorating the Quatercentenary. His company, Platform One designed the logo and a range of marketing support material and David himself created the Timeline which is located in the foyer of the new William Jones Building.

He also edits and produces this newsletter.

Laurence Harvey (05-12) is the fourth OM to take part in the Boat Race and, as cox of the Oxford boat, in this year’s race was following in the footsteps of illustrious Olympian and OM Lord Colin Moynihan. Laurence steered the crew to an 11-lengths victory.

His former School coach, Robin Fletcher, had no doubt about his eligibility for the pivotal role: “He started with us when he was 12, blossomed in the Sixth Form, and steered our First 8 to two National Schools’ medals.”

Daniel Llewellyn Williams (90-97) has enjoyed considerable success as an actor and fight director since graduating from LAMDA. Roles on television and in the West End gave him the experience and confidence to write and perform a one-man play based around Houdini’s visit to Newport. It has played a number of venues throughout Wales and Dan already has bookings for 2015. He can currently be seen in the highly-acclaimed sci-fi film ‘The Machine’, which stars Caity Lotz and Toby Stephens and is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Lewis Oliva (03-10) scorched around the track in Mexico to land two bronze medals for Great Britain in the World Cup Cycling. He took third place in the team event followed by third in the keirin to finish the meeting in Guadalajara as most successful Brit. Lewis is now targeting the Commonwealth Games for Wales in Glasgow later this year and the Rio Olympics in 2016.

The Welsh cyclist recently turned private eye when his £5,000 Pinarello Paris road bike was stolen on a training ride café stop, near Manchester, with Olympic gold medal cyclists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny. Just days later the bike was back in his possession after it was spotted for sale on Facebook! He contacted the seller, asking them to return the bike otherwise their details would be passed on to police, and the bike was dropped off anonymously at a pre-arranged location and returned to Lewis.

Mike Noel-Smith, accompanied by his sons Harry and Will, is planning to cycle 3,751 miles across Canada, on 21st June. Their aim is to set a new record of under 13 days, 6 hours and 13 minutes and raise funds for StreetInvest, a charity helping street children around the world.

The Chippenham-based trio have a thirst for challenges: in July 2012 they rowed non-stop from Mont St Michel in Normandy to St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall - a distance of 250 miles - in 72 hours.

Richard Parks (88-95) has set a British record for the fastest solo, unsupported trek to the South Pole. He completed his journey at 05.24 on Saturday 4th January after covering a gruelling 715 miles, which took 29 days, 19 hours and 24 minutes. The former Wales and Newport Dragons’ flanker had previously set a world record through his 737 Challenge. He reached the summits of the world’s 7 highest mountains and three poles, in seven months, raising one million pounds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Alex Roberts (88-93) is Managing Director at Island Steel in Newport. The company was established 20 years ago by Alex and his father, who already had a pedigree in the steel industry. Island Steel is now the second largest UK processor of steel in Wide Coil, Slit Coil, Decoiled Sheets and Sheared Blanks and services customers throughout Europe. Alex has helped build the company to a 40 million pound turnover and holds ambitions for further considerable long-term growth. He is married to Claudia and they have three children at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools.

Monmouth School - The First 400 Years This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of the School up to the 400th anniversary of its foundation.

It examines the enigmatic figure of the School’s founder, William Jones, before sketching the early years of the School up to a point where, towards the end of the 19th Century, its Headmaster was invited to join the Headmasters’ Conference.

The major part of the book chronicles the growth period from the late 1800s, through the two world wars, other crises the School has had to face and, in particular, the achievement of pupils, past and present, in a great many walks of life.

Edited by Monmouth School teacher Stephen Edwards, the book will be launched at The Shire Hall, Monmouth on 20th June.

It is available at a reduced cost of £32.75, in hardback, size 280 x 240mm with 192 pages.

OBITUARIES George Owen Richards (36-39) on 27th May 2009. A Lieutenant in the 81st Anti Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery he received the Military Cross for outstanding courage and devotion to duty in two attacks on enemy tanks between 2nd and 9th February 1944, during which he was badly wounded. He lived at The Gethley, Parkhouse, Trellech.

On 13th September 2013 Kenneth C Walker (35-42) aged 89. Born in Chepstow, he joined the Home Guard until 1943, when he joined the Royal Navy as a Morse Code Operator. Finally ‘demobbed’ in 1946, after a year in Australia and the Far East, he went to Exeter University to study Classics, where he met his future wife, Dora. He worked as a librarian, retiring from Imperial College library in 1987. Since then he continued winning Guardian crossword competitions, singing in Barnet Choral Society, working with various charities and the Methodist Church, and finally becoming a full-time carer for his wife.

On Friday 11th October 2013 John David Mainwaring (47-54) aged 77. John passed away peacefully at the St Charles Hospital in London, following diagnosis of a vigorous cancer, in Spring. He is survived by 3 children and 8 grandchildren, all of whom live in Switzerland.

Mrs Lynn Thomas wrote: “It is with great sadness that I advise you that my beloved father-inlaw, Rhodri Lynn Melbourne Thomas passed away on 26 December 2013, in Southampton. It was quite sudden and unexpected and we are naturally devastated.

He attended Monmouth in the 1940s and had many stories and happy memories from the time he spent there. He was delighted to be able to attend a reunion around thirteen years ago, when he caught up with old friends.

Dad had a good life and lived it well. He had the ability to charm all ladies, whatever their age, but was respected by men for his positive, pragmatic approach to life. He was recently described as ‘a legend’ by one of my daughter’s friends.

His passion for sport and particularly rugby continues with his two sons and three grandsons and his sense of fairness, wisdom and his indomitable spirit seeps through the family genes.

We miss him very much.”

T.H.L.(Tom) Irving (1922-2013) written by brother Mike Irving (OM 39-46). “Tom left school in 1939, aged 18, to join up in the Royal Corps of Signals. Head of New House and Captain of Rowing, he also played rugby for the 1st XV. He was later discharged from the Army on medical grounds, but was subsequently treated and recovered sufficiently to attend the Usk College of Horticulture. Whilst managing the gardens of a school in Shropshire he met his wife Sheila. He was then appointed to the staff of the Horticultural Department of the Berkshire College of Agriculture. He always had an interest in music and was no mean trumpet player. His favourite hobby, however, was the growing of delphiniums. In the 1980s he survived kidney cancer and lived peacefully with Sheila until his death.”

Kevan Hopson ‘Ivy Cross’ Monmouth School Chapel

On 16th January 2014 Derek Hanbury Jones (37-43), aged 87.

Derek spent a lifetime in serving and helping others. A member of the unbeaten 1940 XV, he also boxed for the School and was in the cricket First XI. He was a former President of the Old Monmothian Club and his appointments to outside organisations were many and varied: Branch Secretary and Standard Bearer for the British Legion; Secretary of the Monmouth Chamber of Commerce; member of the Rotary Club; taking an active part in the establishment of the Citizens’ Advice Bureau in Monmouth; President of the Photographic Convention of the United Kingdom. He was a devout supporter of St Mary’s Church and a bellringer.

Derek was granted the Freedom of the Town of Monmouth in 1981 and awarded the MBE in 2000.

Peter J James (43-50), on February 13th 2014. A great sportsman in the worlds of cricket and rugby, Peter regularly took more than 100 wickets most seasons for Lydney CC, and played at scrum half for Lydney Rugby Club. He was a huge inspiration to his OM son Steve, who went on to become a prolific batsman with Glamorgan and England. In an affectionate tribute to his father Steve said he advised “Never wear a long-sleeved sweater when batting: it means that you don’t intend staying very long.” Cy Roberts (47-55), a long-standing friend wrote “he was a successful businessman in Lydney, mainly due to his popularity and courtesy.”

David (D.A.) Pope (47-55) died on March 1st 2014. He entered Monmouth School with a Borough Scholarship and was a notable oarsman, with his brother John (47-53) being the first of the ‘day boys’ to get onto a rowing side, previously the preserve of the boarding houses. He went on to row in the First Four from 1953. His brother Andrew (A.C. 53-60) also followed in the rowing tradition at the School, as did his future son-in-law, Robert Boddye (74-80). David was a keen actor at school, a passion he retained in his more senior years.

After two years National Service in the Pioneer Corps, David left Monmouth to work in London but returned to Herefordshire in 1964, where he worked at Henry Wiggin for the rest of his working life, and where he lived with his wife and four children. He remained a keen competitive rower and stalwart of Hereford Rowing Club, an active member of the South Herefordshire Hunt and a fine singer, appearing on stage and in concert for many years with both the Monmouth Operatic Society and the Monmouth Choral Society.

Fittingly, he died on St David’s Day, which would have pleased him greatly!

Harvey Herbert passed away peacefully on 4th March 2014, aged 84.

Loving husband of Roxane and June, father of Piers and Rory, grandfather to Angela, Betsy, Henry, Bea and Sarah, his funeral service took place at St Cuthbert’s, Doveridge, Derbyshire on Thursday 27th March. His son Rory wrote: “My brother, St John, and I always had fond memories of the School and I remember well accompanying my father to an Old Monmothian gathering many years ago and the pleasure he felt showing me around his old school, the playing fields and, indeed, the town.”

Roger Wilcox (44-52), on 14th March 2014 following a short illness. A celebration of his life took place at Sutton Crematorium on 28th March.

Richard Power (74-79) passed away on 6th April at his home near Orford in Suffolk. He was an accomplished professional artist.

His elder brother James (70-77) is chaplain at Harrow School.

ROWING Following the great summer, a reunion of Andrew Williams’s 1976 first eight has been mooted...the 1969 first eight have already issued a challenge to “the first formers”! Exact structure of reunion still under discussion.

Also, there are moves afoot to pull together OMBC’s first ever entry into the HoRR as there is a group of fit and active OMs who aren’t in crews but wanting to race. This has the support of the School rowing club and will feature its three Gap Year coaches... Should be a great way to further strengthen the link between school rowers and OMs. James Knight raced in OM colours at the Veteran Fours Head in December in a composite quad that won its category.

OMBC should again see representation at Monmouth Regatta, British Masters and Henley Masters in 2014.

GOLF There are two annual golf tournaments for old boys of public schools in the UK, the Halford Hewitt (HH) and the Grafton Morrish (GM). The HH is a closed competition, ie the same schools take part every year and Monmouth is not one of those invited. This may be advantageous as the HH requires a team of 12 low handicappers and the Club would struggle to raise that. The GM is an open competition for six-a-side teams and schools must play a qualifying round in order to progress to the finals, which are held at Hunstanton & Royal West Norfolk Golf Clubs in late September. About 40 schools compete at the finals.

The OMs have qualified for the finals for about the last six years following a period where we only occasionally entered a side. The Club now does very well in qualifying, usually either winning or finishing second out of some 20 schools that compete in our regional heat. Last year we won the qualifying round.

The finals consist of knock-out matches where the team of six plays three foursomes (alternate shot) matchplay games. There is therefore not much room for manoeuvre; a player can only afford to lose one game in order to progress. We have generally reached the second or third round in the last six years (I think one year we reached the fourth round), so a respectable performance, although those of us who regularly play would certainly like to do better.

We have a small, but very keen, squad of players whose handicaps range from +3 to 4. If we get out our very best team we are certainly one of the stronger sides in the event. We would welcome any new players if there are any we do not know of.

Regular players over the last few years include Ben Westgate (former Welsh Amateur Champion and Walker Cup squad member), Richard Bentham (Welsh International), Tom Light (former Welsh Boys Champion), Rob Simpson (triple golf blue at Oxford), James Stock, Liam McVeigh, Duncan Farron, Peter Spittle and James Morgan (Snr).

In terms of financing, the OM Club pays the entry fees for the tournament, for which we are grateful, and the players cover all their own costs.

OLD MONMOTHIAN CHARITABLE TRUST The Trust was set up five years ago in order to provide financial assistance to the School and its pupils in various forms: bursaries, help with school trips, major and specialist items of equipment, travel awards etc.

In its five years, through the help of the many donors to the Trust, we have now been able to donate £90,000 in this role. This is in addition to the £50,000 donation that the Club has made to the Old Monmothian Appeal Fund specifically for bursaries.

Thankfully, the annual amount that we are able to put aside to provide this help is growing, and in the last 12 months over £37,000 has been donated in direct response to requests from the School. This total covered a wide variety of assistance: - £25,000 for bursaries for boys who otherwise would not have been able to attend the School - £5,000 for a new electronic cricket scoreboard – to be presented on 1 July (see latest OM Club News) - £4250 for the School Football Squad trip to Spain - £1,500 for the Classics’ Department trip to Greece - £520 for a liquid nitrogen container for the Chemistry Department - £400 for annual Old Monmothian Travel Awards for individual boys - £320 to support boys in the GB Rowing Squad - £250 to support boys in the GB Softball Team - £100 to the School’s Charity Raffle The Trustees are extremely grateful to the many Old Monmothians who contribute regularly to the Trust.

by Old Monmothian Peter Young. Known with reverence as “The Brig” to those in the Sealed Knot, Peter was a pupil at the School in the 1930s.

The Sir Henry Vaughan Company will organise a skirmish on Sunday 28th September, around lunchtime: the event is open to the public.

Professor Ronald Hutton is giving a talk on Wales and the Civil War on the previous evening.

THE OLD MONMOTHIAN CLUB BALL 2014 Saturday 6th July 2013 was momentous, not only because the British & Irish Lions hammered the Wallabies in the decisive 3rd Test, and because Monmouth School paraded its many glories in a memorable Speech Day, but also because it marked the Old Monmothian Club Ball.

The Club had not organised a large evening event at this time of year for some time, with many oft lamenting the passing of the OM Dinner Dance at the King’s Head in days of yore. However, the Ball of 2013 at the School was well supported, and all who attended enjoyed a truly special evening. The venue looked wonderful, with sympathetic lighting and dramatic flowers, arranged by Jo Booth and Liz Ashford. Diners enjoying the delicious meal provided by Neil Muir and his catering team were serenaded by the honeyed tones of young Yorkshire crooner, Rhys Hammond. Dancing was to Freefall, an excellent band who ensured that the dance floor remained crowded and atmospheric (although without moshing) throughout. Indeed, it was especially good to witness the appreciation shown by A G Nicholas (77-82) for a cover of a hit penned by his younger brother, G J Nicholas (79-84)!

There will be a very special 400 Ball on Saturday 5th July 2014 at the School, organised this time by the Friends of Monmouth School. Given the extensive support that the OM Club Ball received from parents and friends of the School, I hope that as many OMs as possible will join me in letting their hair (or what’s left of it) down on that night.
