WONDER EXPERIENCE
Bend does an easy job of selling itself to newcomers
World-class ski and mountain bike trails. An emerging food scene. Riverfront paths that stretch for miles. Four beautiful seasons.
But what keeps people here? What makes families put down roots and start lives in Bend? Community.
At its core, Bend is a mountain town that gives a damn. More than 1,500 nonprofits call Bend home, a staggering number for a town of just over 100,000 residents. In fact, it’s almost twice as high as the national average of 6 to 7 nonprofits per 10,000 residents.
And it’s one of the many reasons we’re so proud to call this place home.
In this 2025-26 Winter Edition of the Bend Guide, we’re proud to showcase a wide array of community-based organizations that are determined to leave Bend a little better than they found it.
Kiln, an innovative flex-office concept, is transforming more than 40,000 square feet of former call center space into a new, dynamic and design-forward work community. The Latino Community Association celebrates 25 years of advocacy, direct services, and cultural celebration. And the Deschutes Children’s Foundation, whose four campuses serve as the home for 23 additional nonprofits, expects to serve more than 19,000 children and families in need this year.
As always, our guide also serves as a great Choose Your Own Adventure in terms of winter activity planning. Holidays? We’ve got you covered with Bend’s famous I Like Pie fun run on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 27), Santa’s annual fly-in event in the Old Mill District (Nov. 28), downtown Bend’s Christmas Parade (Dec. 6), Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe’s Holiday Lights Paddle Parade (Dec. 12), the Chabad of Central Oregon’s yearly menorah lighting the first night of Chanukah (Dec. 14), and of course, SantaLand (Nov. 28-Dec. 23).
For our fellow rock ‘n’ rollers, we’ve also highlighted some of our favorite upcoming shows around Central Oregon. Thunderstorm Artis (The Belfry in Sisters, Nov. 22), The Elovaters (Midtown Ballroom, Feb. 15), and AJ Lee and Blue Summit (Volcanic Theatre Pub, March 19) are just a few of the winter concerts we’re pumped to see in the next few months. And that doesn’t even include the nine shows that are already on the Hayden Homes Amphitheater summer schedule.
Finally, we’re thrilled to share with the world our 2025 Winter Art Series piece from Bend artist Jennifer McCaffrey that serves as the cover of this year’s Guide. Best known for her oil paintings, McCaffrey created a magical scene using linocut techniques that pay homage to the Old Mill District’s industrial roots.
Happy winter, everyone!
OLD MILL DISTRICT
OMD CELEBRATES 25 TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2026
Old Mill District planning series of events in June to honor 25 years of growth, experiences, and transformation
Let’s party like it’s 2001.
This June, the Old Mill District celebrates its 25th anniversary. A quarter of a century ago, June 23, 2001, to be exact, Bill Smith's vision that was more than 20 years in the making officially came to life.
Smith, the founder of William Smith Properties, Inc., which developed the Old Mill District, came to Bend in 1970 after completing his MBA at Stanford University to work on the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company’s executive team. (At the time Bend was a small lumber town with a population of just 13,000.)
By 1973 he was leading Brooks Resources, the mill’s real estate arm, when he had an epiphany. Up until that point, Smith’s focus had been on development opportunities for the mill company’s massive timber holdings once they’d been logged. Black Butte Ranch outside of Sisters and Mount Bachelor Village on the west side of Bend were both early examples of projects Smith and his team worked on.
But in the summer of 1973, with lumber operations shut down during a labor strike, Smith and other Brooks-Scanlon executives took turns watching the mill overnight. During his stretch as a night watchman Smith had the realization that the prime development piece in Brooks-Scanlon's portfolio might not be one of its former timber sites, but the stretch along the Deschutes River where the mill itself was. That night along the river, coupled with a trip to San Antonio’s historic River Walk, convinced Smith that development along the Deschutes – connecting the public visually and physically to the water – was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that could potentially transform not just this stretch of the Deschutes River, but the entire community of Bend itself.
Smith held onto that dream for 20 years before the opportunity presented itself. In 1993, roughly a decade after he’d branched off from Brooks Resources and formed his own development group, William Smith Properties, Inc., Smith led an investment group that purchased 270 acres of riverfront property that included the former Brooks-Scanlon and Shevlin-Hixon millsites from timber giant Crown Pacific Partners. Site planning, environmental remediation, and zoning approval took another five years before buildings went vertical, and on June 23, 2001 under a "blue sky glazed with thin clouds” according to The Bulletin, Smith cut a celebratory ribbon with his pocketknife in front of more than 7,000 spectators to mark the official first chapter of the Old Mill District.
1993: Smith leads an investment group that purchased 270 acres of former mill property along both sides of the Deschutes River. Bill and Trish Smith on-site.
The Old Mill District officially opened with 15 tenants in 2001, including Regal Cinemas, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Gap, Banana Republic, and Bath & Bodyworks, all businesses who have been with the district since the start.
Today, the Old Mill District includes more than 60 local, regional, and national businesses and welcomes approximately 3.2 million visitors a year. The Hayden Homes Amphitheater, which was still under construction in 2001, hosted its first shows in 2002. Lyle Lovett’s June 26 performance of that year was our first ticketed concert, and in 2026 the venue will celebrate 25 years of live music.
We’ll be marking our Silver Jubilee in the Old Mill District with a series of events throughout the month. Stay tuned for more details, but it’s safe to assume we’ll do our best to channel the vision, innovation, and grit of our late founder, Bill Smith!

Each December, downtown Bend transforms into a storybook scene in celebration of the holidays. Families line the streets bundled in scarves and mittens; children press close to the curb, and the sound of carols fills the crisp winter air. It’s parade day! A moment that marks the true beginning of the holiday season in Central Oregon.
By late morning, the sidewalks are filled with spectators staking out their favorite viewing spots. Locals know to arrive early, setting up blankets and low-profile chairs while sipping hot beverages from nearby cafés. The excitement builds as the crowd grows, the hum of anticipation spreading through downtown as the first parade floats begin to appear.
For more than forty years, the Bend Christmas Parade has brought generations together to celebrate community and creativity. What began as a modest gathering in the 1950s has since evolved into one of Bend’s most favorite winter traditions, filling the streets with colorful floats, marching bands, and familiar faces who return year after year.
This year’s theme, “A Storybook Christmas,” invites everyone to step inside the pages of their favorite holiday tales like “The Nutcracker,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and “A Christmas Carol.” Each float tells its own story, lovingly crafted to capture the wonder and imagination of the season.
The Cascade Relays Foundation, a local nonprofit dedicated to giving back to Central Oregon, carries the torch in guiding the parade with the same care and heart that has defined it for decades. None of which would be possible without the community of volunteers whose love for the event brings the streets to life year after year.
Whether you’ve watched the parade for years or are experiencing it for the first time, one thing never changes. The palpable holiday spirit. You can feel it in the crowd, in the music, and in every smile that fills the streets.
Because in the end, it’s not just “A Storybook Christmas.” It’s Bend’s story told through joy, tradition, and the shared magic of the holidays.

A LITTLE TAG, A BIG DIFFERENCE
Give back with the Tree of Joy at SantaLand
Every holiday season, tucked inside SantaLand at the Old Mill District, stands a tree that means more than most. The Tree of Joy, hosted by the Greater Bend Rotary Club in partnership with the Salvation Army, is covered in hundreds of tags, each one carrying the hopes of local children and families in need.
Last year, those little tags turned into something incredible. With the help of our generous community, the Tree of Joy provided gifts for 391 children and raised $3,684 in donations to support holiday meals and fulfill wish lists.
Here's how it works: The Salvation Army identifies families, gathers wish lists, and shares them with the Rotary Club. Those wishes become tags on the Tree of Joy at SantaLand. When you select a tag, you're not just choosing to give a gift; you're joining a circle of neighbors committed to spreading joy and support within our community. Together, we ensure each child wakes up to something special on Christmas morning as a testament to our shared kindness and generosity.
It’s a simple act, but one that ripples far beyond a wrapped present. So, this year, if you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back, visit the Tree of Joy at SantaLand in the Old Mill District. One small tag can make a big difference.

RESTAURANTS & BEVVIES
STACKS DINNER AND DELICATESSEN OPENING THIS WINTER
Zydeco owners Cheri and Steve Helt bring NYC-style deli to Bend’s Old Mill District
The dining scene at the Old Mill District is about to include a Pacific Northwest delicatessen thanks to the founders of one of Bend’s most popular restaurants.
Cheri and Steve Helt, owners of Zydeco Kitchen and Cocktails in downtown Bend, along with their Chef Eric Joppie and management team, are set to open Stacks Dinner and Delicatessen, a gourmet delicatessen in the Old Mill District this winter.
The deli will sit on Center Plaza in the heart of the district in a space that formerly housed Gap Kids. Stacks Dinner and Delicatessen will serve a from scratch menu that guests can choose to enjoy inside the restaurant, on the patio by the river, or with graband-go options.
SunWest Builders and multiple local electricians, plumbers, carpenters, masons, and technicians have diligently worked on the new space over the past months.
“It has been incredible to see the hard work of our local tradesmen and women transform this retail space
into the restaurant we have been dreaming about for years,” Cheri Helt said. “We are incredibly grateful.”
In 2024 the Helts and their staff celebrated 20 years of serving “casual, upscale American food with a southern flair” at Zydeco Kitchen and Cocktails. For more than two decades Zydeco has been a local Bend favorite, regularly earning rave reviews and community choice awards from patrons and local media alike.
In 2021, Zydeco was even featured in an episode of the popular Food Network show, “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” which is hosted by celebrity chef Guy Fieri.
"We are incredibly excited to welcome the team behind Zydeco to the Old Mill District,” said Beau Eastes, Marketing Director for the Old Mill District. “They’ve already helped shape Bend’s dining scene, and this new deli is going to be another home run.”
Stacks Dinner and Delicatessen chef Eric Joppie and the rest of the culinary team will offer a menu featuring in-house cured and smoked meats and fish, fresh-caught fish, and local farm-fresh vegetables. Signature dishes are expected to include cured in-house pastrami and corned beef, beet-cured salmon lox, latkes, and rotisserieroasted meats. Customers will also be able to purchase charcuterie, smoked fish, artisan cheeses, farm fresh salads, and pickles by the pound.
“Our team is excited to bring the traditional style of a New York City deli and combine it with the farm-fresh ingredients of the Pacific Northwest,” added co-owner Steve Helt.
Located in a high-traffic space, the Stacks will offer a modernized dining approach; a place to grab a quick sandwich, have a traditional dinner, enjoy a drink with a friend, or take a fine dining-quality meal to-go,

ISLAND VIBES TO BREAK THE WINTER CHILL
Kona
AUTHENTIC VIETNAMESE CUISINE SHINES IN THE OLD MILL DISTRICT
Mix Plate serves up hearty, authentic Hawaiian plates Pho 88’s classic pho, noodle, and banh mi dishes highlight the menu
Nothing breaks the chill of winter quite like the warm glow of Kona Mix Plate.
Straight from the Pacific, Kona serves up classic home-cooked Hawaiian dishes that you can’t find anywhere else in the High Desert. Think legit Loco Moco, mix plates with up to three entrees, the best Potato Mac Salad this side of the Pacific, and of course, homemade malasadas.
In 2026, Kona celebrates 15 years in the Old Mill District. Owners Sheri and Ricky Kim moved to Bend in 2006 and first opened Kona on the south end of Bend. The couple moved Kona Mix Plate to the Old Mill District in 2011 where their daughters, Christina and Mikela, have since taken an active role in running the restaurant that traces its roots back to the 1970s on the Big Island. In fact, the inspiration for Kona Mix Plate originated from Ricky’s mother Keun Soo Kim, known to all simply as Grandma Kim. Her legacy lives on in everything at Kona Mix Plate, from her version of bulgogi - thinly sliced beef - to her famous Potato Mac and homemade garlic and teriyaki sauces.
WHERE: 680 SW Powerhouse Drive Suite 1004; next to Regal Cinemas
CONTACT: 541-633-7378 KonaMixPlate.com
The "Aloha Spirit" shines bright in everything the Kims do. They regularly give to various nonprofits and in 2023 helped raise $16,500 with the Old Mill District for the Hawai’i Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund after the devasting Maui wildfires that same year.
Open for less than a year, Pho 88 in the Old Mill District has already made its mark on the culinary scene in Bend.
Serving up traditional Vietnamese fare, Pho 88 is the latest venture from Alice Nguyen, a seasoned restaurant operator with past ties to the district. Having previously managed Mio Sushi, as well as her own restaurant in Vietnam, Nguyen brings years of experience and passion for high-quality, flavorful Asian cuisine.
"I loved everything about the Old Mill District,” Nguyen said about her seven years leading Mio Sushi. "And I am beyond excited to work with them again and add a Vietnamese restaurant to the district."
Diners can enjoy a menu featuring classic Vietnamese favorites. Signature dishes include steaming bowls of pho, with options like steak, brisket, meatball, oxtail, and chicken. Rice noodle soups and vermicelli noodle bowls packed with fresh herbs and tasty flavors are available, too.
The menu also features banh mi sandwiches, and plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
“I am thrilled to bring another authentic Vietnamese option to Bend and share some more traditional dishes with our community,” Nguyen said. “We are just so happy to bring this concept to the Old Mill District and be part of that team again.”

Cottage Cheese Pancakes
This recipe was given to me by a dear friend and colleague from Bear Creek Elementary School, where we both taught 5th grade in the early 1970’s. Eda Daeuble had a German heritage and she loved these unlikely pancakes. I was reluctant at first, but once tried them, I was hooked. I think you will be too.
Serves 4 to 6
1 C. cottage cheese (I like Eberhard’s)
2 T. vegetable oil
3 eggs, lightly beaten
¼ tsp. salt
½ C. flour
1 tsp. baking soda butter for cooking
Cloud Eggs
Cloud eggs are basically a nest of egg whites and cheese, with a cooked yolk in the middle. It is a recipe that has been around for ages and while these eggs take a bit of time, they are certainly fun, di erent and creative.
Serves 8
8 large eggs, separated, each yolk in its own small bowl, and the whites together in another bowl
Breakfast Strata with Spicy Sausage
This recipe is a favorite for weekend guests, because it is best made the night before and left to age overnight in the fridge. Just bake and serve, along with a fresh green salad with citrus and a bowl of either homemade or store-bought salsa.
In a bowl, stir together the cottage cheese, oil, eggs and salt. Sprinkle the flour and baking soda over the top and stir to combine completely. The batter will be a bit lumpy because of the cottage cheese and it will bubble a bit because of the baking soda.
Heat a skillet over medium heat and coat with cooking spray, melt a bit of butter if you like, and add the batter, about ¼ C. for each pancake. Cook 2-3 minutes, turn and repeat.
To serve, top with fresh berries, warm maple syrup or even a dollop of Greek yogurt.
1 C. finely grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper chopped chives
Heat the oven to 450 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray or line with parchment paper or a Silpat.
In the bowl of a very clean mixer, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt to sti peaks. Gently fold in the finely grated cheese.
On the prepared baking sheet, create mounds of whipped egg whites so they look like little nests with an indentation in the center.
Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the whites for 3 minutes. Open the oven and gently add the yolks to the center of each nest. Cook for 3 more minutes, until the yolks are set and done as you like. Sprinkle with kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper and top with fresh chives.
1 package Jimmy Dean hot sausage
1 lb. sweet Italian sausage
½ sweet onion, diced
1 tsp. good Dijon mustard
1 tsp. kosher salt
¾ tsp. coarsely ground black pepper
2 C. whole milk (or half-and-half)
4 eggs, beaten
8 oz. shredded cheese, like a gruyere, cheddar or other favorite diced sun dried tomatoes, if desired
about 6 C. bread cubes, cut from a loaf of good bread and dried on a sheet pan for about an hour
In a saucepan, crumble and brown the sausage, about 4-5 minutes on medium heat. Remove the sausage from the pan and sauté the diced onion in the remaining fat (add a bit of olive oil if necessary) until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add to the sausage and set aside. Beat the eggs with a fork in a 4 cup glass measuring cup. Add the milk, salt, pepper and Dijon and stir to combine.
Butter or spray a large baking dish and add the bread cubes. Add the sausage and onions to the milk/ egg mixture and pour over the bread. Sprinkle the cheese over the top and store and cover overnight in the fridge.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 45-60 minutes, until the cheese on top is melted and a bit crispy on the edges and a knife comes out clean.
Serve hot, with fresh salsa and a beautiful salad.
Note: Additions of coarsely chopped fresh spinach leaves; sautéed red, yellow and orange peppers; or gently steamed broccoli pieces, folded in before adding the cheese toppings are fun and delicious variations. You can also use diced ham or bacon instead of, or in addition to, the sausage. Don’t be afraid to be creative.
PATRICIA SMITH
This chutney is perfect with lamb and once you try it, you’ll be a fan.
Serves 10 to 12
½ C. cider vinegar
½ C. loosely packed brown sugar
½ C. sugar
1 large red pepper, seeded, diced
¼ inch, about ½ C.
1 small white onion, peeled, and diced, about ½ C.
1 small jalapeno pepper, seeded and diced, about 2 T.
⅓ C. yellow raisins
1 T. finely chopped ginger
1 T. finely chopped garlic
½ tsp. kosher salt
1 ½ lb. fresh peaches, peeled, pitted and gently diced (you can substitute apricots if you like)
Put the vinegar and both sugars in a pan over medium heat and bring to a boil. Add the red pepper, onion, jalapeno, raisins, garlic, ginger and salt and simmer 10 minutes. Add the peaches and simmer an additional 5-10 minutes. If the peaches are still firm, allow to cook several minutes more. You can add additional time if you need to reduce the liquid. Store in the refrigerator in a glass jar, up to several weeks.
Arugula, Orange and Grape Salad
Here’s a simple winter salad you can serve with warming fare like chicken or beef stew, but it’s equally delicious with grilled meat or fish. Chances are that you’ll have most of the ingredients in your winter pantry.
Bourbon Roasted Pork Loin
Nothing smells better than a pork roast in the oven for Sunday dinner. It’s especially good for leftovers, too, like pork tacos with cabbage and peach chutney.
Salad:
fresh baby arugula, trimmed of any long stringy stems(see notes)
2-3 fresh oranges, peeled and cut into bite size pieces(see notes)
1 C. fresh purple seedless grapes, cut lengthwise, in half
Dressing:
4 T. extra virgin olive oil
2 T. fresh orange juice (see note)
1 T. champagne vinegar
1-2 T. local honey
1 small shallot, minced, about 1 T.
¼ tsp. Dijon mustard
kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
1 orange (see note)
For the salad:
Place the orange pieces and the grapes in a small bowl and add 3-4 T. dressing. Keep cold in the refrigerator.
To serve, pile the trimmed arugula on a salad plate, sprinkle lightly with kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper, spoon on some of the grape/orange mixture, along with extra dressing. Add another small sprinkle of salt and pepper and serve cold.
Notes: I find that winter arugula is often more flavorful and less leggy (long stems) than you can find in the summer.
For the dressing:
To make the dressing, put the olive oil, orange juice and vinegar in a small bowl and stir with a small whisk until emulsified. Add the honey, shallot, mustard, salt and pepper and stir again, vigorously, to blend the flavors. Taste and correct seasonings.
Note: For the orange, slice o both ends, squeezing them into a cup to save the juices. Using a sharp knife, peel the skin and pith, slicing from top to bottom, all around the orange. Once again, squeeze the juice from the peelings and save.
3 lb. boneless pork roast
Marinade:
½ C bourbon
½ C. good French grainy mustard
4 T. brown sugar
2 T. local honey
2 tsp. kosher salt
2 tsp. hot sauce, like sriracha
1 tsp. fennel pollen black pepper, coarsely ground
Roasting:
3 medium onions, thinly sliced
3 apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
good olive oil, for browning
kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
Combine the marinade ingredients and rub the meat all over, letting it sit in the marinade for at least 30 minutes.
In a deep cast iron pot, like a Dutch oven, heat 3 T. olive oil. Add the onions and apples. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions and apples are softened, about 10 minutes.
Place the marinated roast on top of the onions and apples and pour in the remaining marinade and any juices. Roast the pork, uncovered, about 50 minutes, to a temperature of 135-140 degrees. Let stand before serving.
Lemon Pudding Cake
We had this dog named Gordy. He was so smart, we called him a ‘Dog and a Half’. He was a legendary creature, but one of his most memorable traits was his taste in food. He loved meat, of course, and could even spit out the vegetables that might be served with it. But his favorite was Lemon Pudding Cake. This dog never begged, unless it was this cake. We often served him his own plate.
Serves 6 to 8
4 large eggs, separated
1 tsp. grated lemon zest
⅓ C. lemon juice
1 T. unsalted butter, melted
1 C. sugar
½ C. flour
½ tsp. kosher salt
1 ½ C. whole milk
Whisk together the egg yolks, lemon zest, lemon juice and butter.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, sugar and salt.
Whisk ½ the flour mixture into the egg yolks, then half the milk. Repeat.
Whip the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gently stir them into the batter.
Pour the batter into an 8-inch buttered oven-proof dish. Fill a large roasting pan about halfway with water. Place it in a 350 degree oven and let the water warm. Gently place the cake in the pan and cook until set, about 45-50 minutes.
This is actually a quite old, classic recipe which you might remember from when you were little. The cake on top is light and delicious and the creamy custard underneath is lemony and subline.

•¼ cup water
Directions
STEP 1: CREAM BUTTER AND SUGAR
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease the bottom and sides of a 8x8 baking pan with butter and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Tilt pan in a circle to lightly coat. Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, Kosher Salt, and Supreme Saigon Cinnamon. Set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, add butter, brown sugar, and 4 Tbsp. Salted Caramel Spice. Beat on medium speed for 2 to 3 min. until fluffy and lightened in color.
STEP 2: FINISH BATTER
With the mixer still running, add egg and Pure Madagascar Vanilla Extract. Mix until combined. Turn the mixer speed down to low and add ⅓ flour mixture, followed by ¼ cup heavy cream, another ⅓ flour mixture, water, and final ⅓ flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
STEP 3: BAKE AND SERVE
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 27 to 30 min. until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Meanwhile, in a clean bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip remaining 1 cup heavy cream and 2 Tbsp. Salted Caramel Spice on medium-high speed for 2 to 3 min. until medium peaks form. Chill until ready to use. Top cooled cake with salted caramel whipped cream, sprinkle with Salted Caramel Spice, slice, and serve.

REGIONAL LEADERSHIP
ROOTED IN DIGNITY
Latino Community Association celebrates 25 years!
Twenty-five years ago, a single volunteer-run hotline became a lifeline for Central Oregon's Latino community. Since then, the Latino Community Association (LCA) has grown into a regional leader in
Building brighter futures together DESCHUTES CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION
Did you know that Central Oregon is home to one of the most unique nonprofits in the United States? Meet Deschutes Children’s Foundation.
For 35 years, Deschutes Children’s Foundation (DCF) has provided space and support to nonprofits that help nearly one in ten Deschutes County residents annually. Their model is simple but powerful, and surprisingly unusual.
On four campuses across Central Oregon located in Bend, La Pine, and Redmond, DCF serves as a home to 23 additional nonprofit partners. By housing multiple partners under one roof, DCF reduces overhead and fosters collaboration that multiplies the impact. As
advocacy, direct services, and cultural celebration. Guided by the voices of the community, LCA continues to be a pillar of hope, connection, and empowerment for Latine and immigrant families across the region.
As part of LCA’s 25th anniversary, the annual Empowering Families Luncheon will honor the Latine journey, celebrate twenty-five-year milestone, and look toward the future. This year also marks a major commitment: the purchase of the Family Empowerment Center in Bend, a cornerstone of their work. The Center meets critical needs in the Latine and immigrant communities, including OHP enrollment, legal aid, English and computer classes, business development, and referrals to key partners. Each year, Latino Community Association’s dedicated team supports more than 2,500 people, helping families gain stability that fosters resilience and prosperity.
The Seedling Fund is an incredible opportunity to help make the Center a permanent, trusted home and accessible resource for the community they aspire to serve.
Everyone is invited to learn more and get involved. Visit LatinoCommunityAssociation.org to explore their work and see how you can help build a future rooted in dignity and opportunity for all.
The Empowering Families Luncheon is on December 12, 2025, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. If you would like to sponsor or attend, contact Lucía Barragán, Development Manager, at Lucia@LatinoCommunityAssociation.org.
nonprofits are being asked to do more with less, the need for collaboration and shared resources has never been greater, making their exceptional model more relevant than ever.
The outcomes are remarkable. Each year, more than 19,000 children and families walk through the doors of DCF campuses to find safety, compassion, and resources that meet their most pressing needs: early childhood education for low-income families, healthcare resources, foster care advocacy, and support for survivors of domestic violence.
As Central Oregon grows, so too does the demand for these vital services. Supporting DCF means ensuring that partners have affordable, stable, sustainable, and trauma-informed spaces to serve children and families for decades to come.
Deschutes Children’s Foundation continues to help build stronger families, healthier communities, and brighter futures across Central Oregon. By uniting as a community, we can help every child reach their full potential. Learn more or make a gift at DeschutesChildrensFoundation.org
THE FATHER’S GROUP
Building community, culture and connection
The Father’s Group invites you to be part of a movement that celebrates culture, uplifts youth, and builds stronger communities across Central Oregon. From Thanksgiving through the spring, their work focuses on meeting the needs of families while creating spaces of joy, belonging and opportunity.
The Ujima After-School Program (open to all, centering Black and Brown youth ages 9–18) meets in six-week increments throughout the year. With an Afrocentric lens, students engage in leadership development, life skills, creativity, and cultural literacy. All in a safe, affirming environment. Paired with the Empowered Mentorship Program, young people are guided by mentors who share wisdom on financial literacy, job readiness, and navigating life’s challenges, while fostering a sense of pride and resilience.
As the seasons shift into spring, The Father’s Group calendar expands offering community barbecues, professional showcases, and public events that spotlight Black excellence in Central Oregon. February’s Black History Month will bring collaborative events with Black-led organizations and community builders to celebrate history while inspiring the next generation.
The Father’s Group is more than a nonprofit, it’s a hub for connection, education, and culture. Whether you attend an event, volunteer your time, or contribute financially, you’re helping create a Central Oregon where all families thrive.

HOW TO EXPLORE BEND RESPONSIBLY
It is easier than you think!
In case you missed it, our town is pretty rad. Bend is more than just an iconic outdoor destination with great places to eat, dance, and shop; it's a community built around the aweinspiring beauty that can only exist at the confluence of the high desert, the Deschutes River, and the mighty Cascades. But it’s all so vulnerable, too. We (and only we) have the power to protect it so everyone can enjoy this awesome oasis for generations. It’s easy. By embracing Leave No Trace principles we can all be a force for good.
Leave No Trace isn't about following rigid rules designed to straitjacket your fun; it's about making conscious choices that lessen your impacts so more fun can happen later. Think tiny. It’s easy to leave a place 1 percent better than you
found it so everyone can experience the same jaw-dropping amazement standing before Tumalo Falls for the first time. When we stick to designated trails, we protect delicate ecosystems that give us wildflowers and nourish the elk and prevent erosion that can harm the fish. When we pack out everything we pack in, we keep our landscapes pristine and free from unsightly litter. Proper waste disposal, including human waste, is crucial for preventing contamination and preserving the health of our natural water sources.
Everyone can make a difference. Imagine enjoying a rollicking ride on Phil's Trail or a serene paddle on the Deschutes, knowing that your presence isn't detracting from the experience for others or fouling the environment. No one wants to photograph a meadow at sunset with a discarded Slurpee cup in it. That’s the why behind Leave No Trace. It encourages us to respect wildlife so they can thrive in their natural habitats without human interference. It asks us to minimize campfire impacts, preventing wildfires and preserving the natural beauty of our forests. And it reminds us to be considerate of other visitors, fostering a respectful and enjoyable outdoor community.
By adopting these simple yet deeply effective principles, your time in Bend becomes something much more than just a trip. It becomes a positive, lasting contribution. You are the solution.
So enjoy the pine drops and the columbines. Let yourself be wowed by the thundering mist from those falls. It’s even okay to feel a twinge of melancholy witnessing infinite stars wheel across these dark skies at the end of the most perfect day of play. Nothing lasts forever but by working together to keep Bend vibrant, wild, and welcoming, your small actions make a huge difference in preserving the charm and natural splendor for just a little bit longer. That’s all it takes. That’s what keeps Bend rad.
WILL LEATHER GOODS NOW OPEN SHOPPING
Old Mill District becomes fourth retail store for nationally acclaimed company out of Eugene
From Venice Beach boardwalks to flagship stores in Oregon and Texas, Will Leather Goods has built a national reputation for craftsmanship and design. The Old Mill District is the home to the nationally recognized leather goods maker’s newest retail location, a gorgeous 1,100-square-foot shop in the same building as lululemon that utilizes reclaimed lumber from Bend’s storied mill history.
Founded by Detroit-born leather artisan Will Adler, the Eugene-based brand is known for creating and selling leather goods such as backpacks, handbags, duffle bags, totes, briefcases, wallets, belts, and other accessories. All backed by a lifetime guarantee.
“Bend is a natural home for our brand. A place where craftsmanship, the outdoors, and creativity all come together,” said Adler, who is also the company’s CEO. “We’re excited to join the Old Mill District, to be part of this vibrant community, and to offer goods that are rugged enough for everyday adventure yet timeless enough to be passed down for generations.”
Known for full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather and meticulous construction, Will Leather Goods offers a lifetime of repairs or replacements for defects in all their products, whether the issue is with materials or workmanship.
“Will Leather Goods is a regional craftsman brand with national recognition, exactly the kind of unique, quality-first retailer our community looks for,” said Beau Eastes, Marketing Director for the Old Mill District. “Their goods are rugged and practical, made to be used hard and kept for life.”
Beyond their design and retail business, Will Leather Goods is also a company that gives back. Their “Discover Your Will” program through the company’s Give Will Foundation, for example, has provided more than 35,000 backpacks to under-resourced students across the U.S.
“Part of our job at the Old Mill District is championing brands with soul, businesses that support makers and artisans while offering something truly useful,” Eastes said. “We’re excited to welcome Will Leather Goods and to give locals and visitors another reason to swing by the district.”
The Bend shop is the company’s fourth retail store, joining existing locations in Eugene, Portland, and Fort Worth, Texas.

Bend just can’t get enough of City Home.
The Portland-based retailer known for its eclectic vintage-inspired home furnishings, decor, and accessories has opened a seasonal pop-up in the Old Mill District between lululemon and Will Leather Goods.
"It’s a curated collection of elevated, Westerninspired furnishings,” City Home owner and founder Kim Pelett said. “Lots of unique wall art, reclaimed wood furniture pieces, hide rugs and one-of-a-kind antique accessories.”
City Home, which celebrated four years in the Old Mill District this summer, is the passion project of Pelett, who boasts more than 35 years of home decor sales experience.
"We love everything they’re doing so it was a pretty natural choice to give them additional space this winter,” said Beau Eastes, the Old Mill District’s Marketing Director. “Especially when you consider how close it is to their main store. And it’s a great fit next to lululemon and Will Leather Goods.”

Jennifer McCaffrey’s linocut pays homage to district’s roots and winter magic
Whatever you do, don’t put Jennifer McCaffrey in a box.
Known for her expressive oil paintings, McCaffrey, the artist commissioned by the Old Mill District to create their 2025 Winter Art Series piece, stepped outside her comfort zone to craft a stunning linocut block print that pays homage to the Old Mill District’s industrial roots and blue-collar beginnings.
The final piece, which features a powerful elk standing sentinel in a riverside snowbank before the Old Mill’s historic smokestacks, a snowcapped Broken Top rising in the background with a hint of the Northern Lights in the sky, feels both nostalgic and bold.
Printed in a duotone palette inspired by vintage blackand-white photographs, McCaffrey said she hoped to capture the timeless relationship between Bend’s natural beauty and its working heritage.
“I really wanted to tie it back to the Old Mill District’s history,” she said. “The process of carving the block felt connected to that timber and tactile side of the district’s past. It was the perfect way to marry my own creative instincts with the spirit of this place.”
This is the ninth straight year the Old Mill District has commissioned an original art piece as part of its Winter Art Series. Each year, the artwork is featured as the backbone of the district’s winter marketing campaign. McCaffrey’s art piece can be seen throughout Central Oregon on banners, posters, and the cover of the Old Mill District’s annual winter guide – the publication currently in your hands.
“We treasure this annual tradition, and this year Jen's piece is completely unique,” said Beau Eastes, Marketing Director at the Old Mill District. “I love how
the piece being a linocut pays homage to the craftsmanship of the former mill workers and how she’s able to add that drop of winter magic with the night sky. It’s totally different than anything we’ve had before and brilliantly captures everything we love about Bend.”
To bring the scene to life, McCaffrey became part artist, part historian. She scoured archives and old photographs of the original Brooks-Scanlon mill, studying the silhouettes of its smokestacks and the quiet grain of its past.
The black-and-white images informed her palette and composition, she said, grounding the piece in authenticity.
“This just feels like winter in Oregon to me,” she said.
Having spent most of her career as a surgical assistant while painting on the side, this year’s Winter Art Series commission represents a turning point for McCaffrey.
“I’ve been painting my whole life, but I’ve always hesitated to call myself a professional artist,” she said. “Being chosen for this series feels like permission to fully claim that title. That 7-year-old, 12-year-old, and 16-year-old versions of me who dreamed about being an artist are all thrilled right now.”
Prints and other versions of McCaffrey’s art can be viewed and purchased at The Stacks Art Studios & Gallery in the Old Mill District, a space she shares with four other local artists. More about McCaffrey and her work can also be found online at JenniferMccaffrey.com.
TAKE A CLOSER LOOK
New art series from Lisa and Lori Lubbesmeyer invites viewers to examine the small wonders of the natural world
A new art installation in the Old Mill District invites visitors to slow down, explore, and take a closer look at the natural beauty in Central Oregon.
Created by artists Lori and Lisa Lubbesmeyer, the four-piece series captures the intricate details of nature along the Deschutes River. Each painting offers a familiar view of the living world — the shimmer of a salmon, the texture of leaves, the pattern of a butterfly’s wing, and the glimpse of a bee — encouraging viewers to pause and ponder the small wonders that play a role in the area’s ecosystem.
The paintings hang outdoors along the second-floor catwalk above Sweet Tooth Candy Shoppe and Wild Child, near the Lubbesmeyer Art Studio & Gallery, which first opened in the Old Mill District 17 years ago. The Old Mill District commissioned the Lubbesmeyers to create the series.
“We’re always looking for creative ways to beautify the district,” said Beau Eastes, Marketing Director at the Old Mill District. “This installation brings art into an unexpected space. It’s a small surprise that we hope will make people smile when they find it.”
The Lubbesmeyer sisters, who are trained in oil painting and printmaking, are best known for their collaborative “fiber paintings” which combine fabric, thread, and texture into richly layered compositions. For this four-piece series, they returned to painting, a medium Lisa Lubbesmeyer says allowed for larger scale and a sense of immediacy.
“These pieces are meant to draw people in,” she said. “They’re about looking closely at color, at texture, and the details that connect everything in nature. That’s how we see the Old Mill District, too, a living ecosystem of people, creativity, and environment.”

Each painting was created through the sisters’ distinctive process of layering over one another’s work until neither can add more. This is a method that mirrors the collaboration and balance the identical twins have built over their 26 years of working together.
According to Lisa, the sisters were thrilled to be asked to create these pieces, which they feel are representative of their gratitude and their legacy within the Old Mill District.
“We’ve called this place home for nearly two decades,” she said. “To leave something permanent here feels like giving back to a community that’s given so much to us.”
FIRST FRIDAY ART WALK
Meet the minds behind the masterful designs
Did you know that the Old Mill District is home to more than 20 artists and creators?
This amount of free-flowing creativity inspires us, too! That is one of the many reasons we celebrate the dawn of a new month by way of First Friday Art Walk. It’s a captivating journey through the expressions of local artists, each as expansive as the themes that inspire them.
The First Friday of each month from 3 to 6 p.m., Amejko Artistry, Lubbesmeyer Art Studio & Gallery, The Stacks Art Studios & Gallery, Tumalo Art Co. and a host of retailers celebrate our local makers, designers and artistic spirit by opening their doors for all to meet the minds behind the masterful designs. First Friday Art Walkers will encounter some of the best mixed media art, acrylic, oil-based, sculpture, photography, jewelry, ceramics and hand-turned wood, among other mediums!
F st Friday Art Walk
Participants can enjoy not only art from around Central Oregon, but participating shops and studios offer different wine samples compliments of Va Piano Vineyards Wine and Champagne Bar and select dips whipped up by Matt Perry at Savory Spice Shop. The edible additions complement the creative ambiance, enriching the experience as walkers explore the depths of the regional art on display. First Friday Art Walk in the Old Mill District is the perfect prelude before downtown Bend’s activities that start at 5 p.m.

COZY SEASON INSPIRES VIBRANT CANVASES
From woven hush to roaring color Old Mill District artists bring winter to life
Tumalo Art Co. is an artist collective owned and operated by more than ten local artists. It is known as a hub for many of Central Oregon’s best-known creatives, and they open a new exhibit every month. Gallery-goers are treated to a variety of oil, acrylic and mixed media artwork in addition to ceramics, glass, sculpture, photography, hand-pulled prints, hand-turned wood, handmade jewelry and more!
Among the four art galleries, working studios and many murals within the Old Mill District, inspiration is as free flowing as the spectacular Deschutes River surrounding this place we call home. Whether it’s handwoven textures, striking landscapes, or contemporary photography, the Old Mill District is home to a diverse range of artistic styles that capture the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
AMEJKO ARTISTRY
Anna Amerjko is the mastermind behind original works of three-dimensional nomadic woven art décor. Inspired by the tranquility and natural beauty of her surroundings, Anna creates pieces that encourage a pause to appreciate the simplicity and beauty of the moment. For those looking for a unique addition to your home or simply admiring the craft, her studio in the historic Little Red Shed at the south end of the Old Mill District is a must-visit.
This winter Tumalo Art Co. artists will explore the theme of “Winter’s Embrace” in an exhibit that runs through January. The theme draws inspiration from the Norwegian and Danish concept of Hygge – creating a cozy, mindful and contented atmosphere especially during the winter months. Visitors can expect winter scenes as well as many interpretations of all the joys of this peaceful season.
Beyond its rotating exhibits, Tumalo Art Co. provides a welcoming space where visitors can engage with artists and gain a deeper appreciation for their work. Whether you’re searching for a statement piece or simply browsing, this collective keeps inspiration at the forefront of everything they do.
LUBBESMEYER ART STUDIO & GALLERY
Twin sisters Lori and Lisa Lubbesmeyer prove that two creative minds are better than one. Their collaborative process fuses Lisa’s background in printmaking with Lori’s expertise in oil painting, creating layered pieces full of texture, movement and depth.
This winter, as an extension of the artists' deep connection to the Central Oregon landscape, the Lubbesmeyers will host their fifth annual ornament
fundraiser for the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council and the Deschutes Land Trust.
By dedicating a portion of their holiday sales to these two specific nonprofits, the Lubbesmeyer sisters ensure that their success as artists directly contributes to the long-term health of their local environment. The Upper Deschutes Watershed Council focuses on protecting and restoring the vital river systems that sustain the ecosystem, while the Deschutes Land Trust conserves the land that provides essential wildlife habitat and scenic beauty. For the artists, this partnership is not just a seasonal gesture but a fundamental part of their artistic philosophy, recognizing that a vibrant creative life is inseparable from a healthy and protected natural world.
THE STACKS ART STUDIOS & GALLERY
Alyson Brown: Alyson has a deep connection with wildflowers and their transformative power. Her artistic expression explores the essence of flowers beyond aesthetics, exploring their roles in folklore, healing, and personal rituals infused with a commitment to natural
beauty and thoughtful symbolism. Her passion for botanicals and cocktails led to her book, “The Flower-Infused Cocktail: Flowers with a Twist” available at The Stacks!
Kira Frances: Kira’s vibrant work combines elements of abstraction and realism, asking the viewer to investigate the truth in context of one’s perception. Through her extensive travels and experiences in both urban and wild environments, her paintings serve as a canvas for introspection. Begging the question, what is painting if not a glimpse into an altered form of reality?
Lindsay Gilmore: Lindsay is known for her landscape paintings that are inspired by the colors and compositions of nature’s contours that captivate her while on adventures with her family. Her work aims to bring a piece of this natural splendor into homes, blending vibrant colors and delicate details to create pieces that resonate with tranquility.
Plus, Lindsay has tons of giftable artwork and products featuring our beloved local landscapes. In addition to her usual original paintings, fine art prints on paper and canvas, greeting cards, and stickers, she recently released three new designs of her popular puzzles. Jennifer McCaffrey: Jen’s former life as a dancer is the guiding light behind her paintings, the overarching aim of which is to create pieces that come alive on the canvas. Her styles range from abstract to impressionistic, with current thematic patterns of snow, skies, trees and foothills. Says Jen, “During the winter notice the shapes of things so much more – the spires of the trees, horizontal undulations of the foothills, and the light! Wow.” Adding, “It is truly an artist’s dream, to live around snow that reflects all the subtle colors in the sky and makes such fascinating shadows.”

HAYDEN HOMES AMPHITHEATHER
THANK YOU!
The 2025 concert season at Hayden Homes Amphitheater was like no other
How to sum up the 2025 concert season at Hayden Homes Amphitheater, you ask? This question has been rolling around in our brains since the last note Warren Zeiders strummed on his guitar.
We do know that it’s a question AI can’t answer. Gemini didn’t watch a fan remove their Patagonia puffy jacket and hand it to James Taylor who proceeded to wear it for the duration of his performance like it was part of the act. Chat GPT didn’t witness the Green Team sort through patron waste diverting more than 90% of it from the local Landfill. Copilot couldn’t tell you that our eight local food truck vendors reported the hungriest crowds were at Barenaked Ladies followed by Collective Soul and that if we stacked every burger sold this season, the tower would be taller than the famous 250-foot-tall Smokestacks that smile at the venue from across the Deschutes River.
who with The Chrome Hearts performed every classic revolutionary song a fan could ask to hear.
The biggest surprises of this season? Shout out to a few of the openers who more than once stopped us in our tracks to absorb the ingenuity exploding from the stage. We’re looking at you Ginger Root, LA LOM, Hermanos Gutiérrez, John Carroll Kirby, Futurebirds, TV On the Radio, and Glass Beams! If this were a festival bill, you bet we’re buying tickets.
Were there any headliners who caught us by surprise? You had better believe it. Goose’s disco dive dropped all the jaws. Peter Frampton, according to many a patron, “absolutely shredded.” We were in awe of his ability to play with the stamina of a 20-year-old while never leaving his stool. Dropkick Murphys ability to generate the largest mosh pit this place has ever seen and then conduct a thousand-person group hug moments later, downright impressive.
The Red Clay Strays had us all talking, too. Assistant Food and Beverage Manager, TJ Hurd reflected, “At the Red Clay Strays, the atmosphere just felt like this show was a massive deal. You could feel the anticipation and excitement in the air, not only with staff, but around town. Then for the show to actually live up to expectations and the band to put on a show that soothed your eardrums and punched you in the face....it was an all timer.”
That, and no one can accurately describe the emotional charge in the air when 8,000 fans are singing the lyrics to their favorite artists’ song with smiles as wide as their earlobes. That’s why this venue is so special, and why live music is imperative for our collective wellbeing.
We mentioned James Taylor, who was our season opener, followed closely by two nights with STING. What came next was a mind-bending array of talent ranging from The Black Keys, Leon Bridges, and Mumford & Sons, to Earth, Wind & Fire, Maoli, and Old Dominion. We went on to host 20 shows in August featuring the likes of Joe Bonamassa, LCD Soundsystem, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Alabama Shakes, RÜFÜS DU SOL, and Lainey Wilson. Let’s not forget about the renegade of modern rock, Neil Young,
The biggest surprise, and certainly something no AI generator would ever be able to describe, The Lumineers concert when the staff took it upon themselves to dress up in appreciation for two of our favorite patrons who can’t help but spread joy wherever they are. Words can’t describe the surprise on their faces nor the joy in our hearts when it all was revealed.
Which brings us to our next highlight. The staff. In fact, we’ve asked fans what their favorite thing about the venue is, and more times than we can count the response is, “the space is as beautiful as the friendly, well-trained staff who work there. Our experiences are consistently outstanding!” It takes more than 700 local folks to make a season successful, and we’re proud to share that this year we had an 85% return rate. More than dedication, that takes passion.
This season was impactful in ways we haven’t yet comprehended, and we’re already building our 2026 season. Which begs another question AI won’t have the answer to, “How does it get any better?” The one thing we’re certain of is that it’s always better when we’re together, and we’ll just have to be there in-person to experience it for ourselves. Until then, be well, friends!

Picture it: a golden Cascade sunset along the Deschutes River, and Jim hilariously pondering why our hiking snacks have the caloric footprint of a minivan, or why Bend has 47 roundabouts but zero ways to leave a farmer’s market with under $80 of peaches, and whether SPF 8 is really “plenty.” Of course, he’s bringing brand new material, perfect for date night or family night, and we can expect the relentless riffs to keep rolling like the river in the background. Be sure to grab your tickets early because nothing hurts more than FOMO, except maybe ordering a spicy burrito before a two-hour comedy set.
