HowTo: Seal aThin Brick Floor

Whether you are thinking about doing a thin brick floor or have come to the end of a thin brick floor project, you might be asking yourself, how do I protect my brick floor? You’ve come to the right place!

Brick is a durable substance, but when installed on flooring, will need some added protection Thin brick is very porous and will absorb just about anything from spilled spaghetti sauce in the kitchen to that sticky mud brought in by your kid’s shoes (which as hard as you try, always finds a way into the house) You need a way to protect it from the wear and tear of everyday living. You need to seal your brick!

Which Sealant?

There are a lot of different brick and stone sealants out there We at Old Mill Brick recommend the 511 Impregnator Sealant by Miracle. It is a non-gloss sealant, meaning it will not leave a shiny finish If you prefer a shiny appearance to the brick, then we recommend a gloss sealant

Application Process

1. You should apply the sealant after you have installed the brick but before you have grouted This will protect the brick from becoming stained by the grout, which you will float onto the brick floor.

2 After waiting at least 6-12 hours you can float your grout onto the brick floor See blog post: "How to Install Thin Brick Floor" https://www.oldmillbrick.com/blog/how-to-install-a-thin-brick-floor/

3 Clean the excess grout from the floor Again refer to blog post: "How to Install Thin Brick Floor"

4. After you have cleaned the excess grout from the floor, we recommend applying another layer of sealant This will seal the grout and put two coats of sealer on the brick, which will further help in preserving your new brick floor

HowToApply

To apply the sealer, you can use either a simple brush, or for larger areas, a roller You essentially want to saturate the brick. You don’t need to flood the surface but apply enough to get the brick wet Once you’ve covered the entire surface, wait 3-5 minutes for the brick to absorb the sealer If there is any excess sealer, remove it with a clean towel

NOTE: Whether you use the 511 Impregnator or another sealer, please read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before use.
