CASE STUDY

The project is located at a site which is densely fabricated in an urban fabric, namely an infrastructure hub.

The intention of this project is to challenge the conventional idea of a school while not be extensively unrealistic.

The design process was largely shaped by the existing infrastructure at the site both as constraints and opportunity. The project was weaved into the urban fabric by becoming a piece of public infrastructure as well. It deals with the question of how does the school contribute to the infractructure, and what are the mutual benefits of colliding school and infrastructure.

MCCORMICK TRIBUNE CAMPUS CENTER Illinois Institute of Technology OMA 1997-2003

The intention of this project was to reurbanized the two segragated campus because of ‘the L’. Therefore, a crutial location had been chosed to the heart of the campus.

The layout of the interior was devided by the common student paths marked by the architects. Therefore, the campus center is an infrastructure hub itself. At the interior, the architect introduced different headspace to indicate the programs according to their spatial qualities and also to contexualize the users within the campus. He also manipulated different circulatory infrastructure to create different speed.

SITE ANALYSIS Hill Road

The Hill Road is such a dynamic and dense urban site that very limited area had the potential to be firther developed. The area in front of the municipal building extending untill the Hill Road Park was selected. The Nolli map illustrates the accessible and inaccessible area, indicating the arrangement of the public section of the site.

During the research, the major circulation to the upper level of Hill Road was identified, through the municipal building. Historical records also point out that a pathway existed before the construction of the building. Therefore, the selected site has the potential to be manipulated as a new urban module.

Analysis

The two section drawings illustrate two special qualities of the site. The one at the top is cut in a northern-sourthern orientation. It indicates the slopy topography of the site as well as the coverage of the elevated highway above.

The interior of the municipal building is shown to illustrate the connection between the lower level and the upper level.

The lower one is cut in a eastern-western orientation, further indicating the diversity of the site and its topography.

The series of mappings on the right side shows different aspect of the site. Most primarily, the shading analysis helps to provide indications of the program arrangement in the latter design shaping.

Eight strategies are the prototypes for the latter design proposal. Each category deals with an aspect. The first two help to shape the interior, indicating different spatial qualities. The second two try to connect the exterior visually and utilize the three landmarks of the site to contextualize the users. Then, the two are about the facade elevation. Finally, different circulatory methods help to redefine the space.

This one challenges the convention of an atrium space. Atriums provide visual connection for the interior, and facilitate conversation.

This prototype introduces different orientation of the walls and different senses of enclosure and openness.

The space is carved out according to the views of the exterior. This is a way to enable the view to define the space.

This prototype is a piling of corridor space.

The orientation of the corridors were to connect the possible landmarks at the exterior.

By doing so, the users can contextualize themselves through the permeability of the corridors.

The facade design uses fins twisted in different angles to provide different views as well as filter some of the views at a certain angle.

Through the curvature of the ceiling, different headspace is created.

This prototype deals with route, height, ramps and staircase.

This prototype is a series of openings on the walls, some of them extend to the ground to allow for circulation.

MASSING MODELS

THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED SCHOOL DESIGN IS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENTS A CLEAR GUIDANCE OF ROUTE THROUGH DIFFERENT SPATIAL EXPERIENCE INSIDE THE SCHOOL. ONE OF THE METHODOLOGY APPLIED IN THE SCHOOL IS DIFFERENT CEILING HEIGHTS OF BUULDING BLOCKS. HIGH CEILING HEIGHTS WILL GIVE A SENSE OF COMPRESSION WHILE COMPRESSED AREA WILL OFFER A SENSE OF PRIVACY. ANOTHER METHODOLOGY USED IS THE APPLICATION OF RAMPS AND STAIRS. RAMPS ALLOW CONTINUOUS FLOW OF CIRCULATION WHILE STAIRS IS MORE A RIGID TOOL OF CIRCULATION. Eight massing models are made to provide possibilities for the arrangement of the programs. The first four are more attemptive while the last four are developed in a sequence. The basic concept is to arrange the programs according to their privacy levels and the spatialness of the different programs. In the final scheme, we want the interior design to manifest the privacy of the programs utilizing the opportunities created by the site, namely the eye-catching flyover. Therefore, constant exposure to bottom of the bridge and the sky is essential.

MASSING I

The highlight of this massing model is that all of the circulation spaces were lifted up above the programs. The programs were similar to piers, and the space in between is left for the pedestrians

MASSING II

The arrangement of the classrooms follows the topography directly under the flyover. The programs were arranged according to the type of sunlight on the site. However, this type of arrangement lacks clear logic.

MASSING III

This massing model has a central axis, which contains the entrance hall, the assembly hall and the sportshall. The rest of the programs were arranged aside.

MASSING IV

The programs arrangement is still according to their privacy, entrance hall, classrooms, offices and washrooms. The scheme attemps to bring the two large programs close to the bottom of the flyover to make association with the site.

However, this scheme requires much advanced technology for the construction and is not practical.

MASSING V

The assembly hall at the center is a large communal space and a central elememt of the school. Atriums are included and the upper level is open to the exterior. However, the two separate parts is not site specific.

MASSING VI

The scheme solved the challenge faced in scheme IV. By piling up the programs, the two upper programs are supported. However, none of the programs can be exposed to the exterior, Therefore, the programs are isolated from the site.

MASSING VII

The scheme intended to deal with the problem encountered in the previous scheme by introducing terrances and offsetting the circulatory space. However, the overall circulation is too singular and boring and does not include different speed.

MASSING VIII

The final massing model adopts a linear arrangement. By constantly exposing the programs to the site, the scheme is more site specific. The shape carefully avoids the major traffic of the site to minimize the interference. The structure is also feasible by piling up the programs using load-bearing walls and beams.

FORM

The form of the project manipulates two elements: the height of the building follows the topography and the shape of the flyover, the width of the building is a narrow trapezoid. The three models are concepts of the form.

Based on the final massing and some concept models experimenting on the basic form, a sequence of schemes were composed. However, each one has its own fault to be replaced by another one before the final proposal. The ideal school is a place that you understand where you are at the moment. Through the approaches we did in the previous stage, you can constantly contextualize yourself.

SCHEME I

On the ground floor, the form follows the shape of the flyover.

The layout of the first floor is more diagonal. As shown in the diagram below, the orientation of the corridors or footbridges is towards the three landmarks of the site. On the second floor, the sportshall locates at the part that is not covered by the flyover to allow for more direct sunlight.

The form of the school still adopts the trapezoidal shape, indicating the privacy of the programs in a sequence manifested through the width of the corridor. The programs were classified according to the privacy and broadness, auditorium, classrooms, offices, toilets. In between, you can see the flyover above, while the headspace shrinks.

However, through measurement, this change of headspace might be too subtle to be sensed by the users. Even if two staircases were added to magnify the difference, it is still a weak argument. The relationship between the project and the site is also yet to be explored.

The school serves as a connection between the municipal building and the upper part of the Hill Road, weaving into the urban fabric, and offers a new concept of the public space and the architecture. The programs are arranged as a series of concrete boxes piling together and structurally supporting each other through the ‘three-point structural system’ of load-bearing walls or columns and beams. The gaps between the boxes open up to the sky, creating atriums and clerestories. The cladding to the facade is composed of timber panels of untreated oak.

MATERIALITY

The facades are clad with concrete brickwork and with oak wood at around two meters above the ground level. As a design strategy, the hybrid outer skin serves as a transition from the timer upper layer to the concrete ground, while at the same time breaks down the abruptness between the concrete-dominant site and the school. As the interior design requires very limited openings to the exterior at the flanks, wood helps to reduce the sense of rigidness and adds to the liveliness of the school.
