A NEWSLETTER FROM OLDFIELDS SCHOOL

VOLUME 10, NUMBER 1 FALL 2018

IT'S OFFICIAL! David G. Perfield Installed as 11th Head of Oldfields School Fall Family Weekend is always a favorite time for the Oldfields community, but this year was especially celebratory thanks to the installation of the 11th Head of Oldfields School, David G. Perfield. The ceremony took place in the gymnasium in front of a large crowd of friends, family, and colleagues. Remarks from Head of Waterford School Andrew Menke, a mentor, friend, and colleague of David's from New Hampton School, made us laugh with stories of David's performances for students (singing Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash!) and made us proud as he shared examples of David's leadership qualities. "Mr. Perfield is about we, not me. He is driven by mission and purpose... and is one of the most loyal and trustworthy people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He revels in the success of others. In David Perfield, you have a willing partner and leader in your pursuit of Courage, Humility, and Largeness of Heart. Together, your future is exceptionally bright." We couldn't agree more!

As David took the podium, he was indeed humble. As he thanked his wife Lisa, and daughters Anna and Lexi, his heartfelt emotion was apparent. He shared his thankfulness at being given the opportunity to come to Oldfields, and told the girls, "You are the reason why I am here...why our family chose to be here!" The students were visibly moved, with a girl or two seen shedding a tear. Mr. Perfield's remarks resonated in the hearts of the audience as he explained why Oldfields is a fit both professionally and personally–the feeling of family, a warm and welcoming community, and a respectful and accepting culture. He shares our commitment to a school community that meets girls where they are–and then provides an educational experience that prepares them for an uncertain world after Oldfields. David explained how the School will be developing a strategic plan that looks 3, 5, 10 years ahead and beyond that defines why an Oldfields education is relevant, …

...Installation continued why the world needs Oldfields, and why the world needs Oldfields girls. The swearing in by Chair of the Board R. Augustus Edwards III P'95, '98 made it official! The day of celebration continued with a wonderful lunch, the Performing Arts Showcase, and an in-house riding show. The crisp, fall weather made dinner under the tent, live music, and s'mores around the fire pit as perfect as it can be. It is an exciting time to be part of Oldfields School, as we embrace time-honored traditions that bind us, while celebrating new beginnings that will move us into a bright future.

David accepts congratulations from Senior Class President Kennedy '19 and All-school President Olivia '19

OS Students Shoot for the Stars–Literally!

The new STEAM Committee, led by Science Department Chair Michele Harrison, continues to provide new opportunities to expose, engage, and encourage Oldfields students to pursue careers in the STEAM field. Their most recent adventure took four students, Kasey Michlowitz '20, Laura Yang '20, Yaqing Pi '20, and Ariella Beals '20 to Washington, DC, to compete in the "Go For Launch" contest sponsored by Higher Orbit. Higher Orbit is a nonprofit with the mission of promoting

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); along with leadership, teamwork, and communication through the use of spaceflight. Over the course of three days, "Team Persephone" had to define and design a space experiment that was presented to a panel of science judges. One of the judges was astronaut Don Thomas! Their space experiment was titled, "Regeneration of Botrylloides Leachii (Tunicates) in Microgravity." 2

We are proud to share that the Oldfields team was one of seven teams that advanced to the final round held on November 17. Their experiment was not selected as the one that will be conducted on the International Space Station, but they are already excited for next year's competition. Congratulations on your success!

Wow! Way to go girls!

SHOUT OUTS!

Alumnae Gatherings

Oldfields Parent Association

OLDFIELDS PARENT ASSOCIATION

A huge shout out to our dedicated and hardworking Oldfields Parent Association for all of their planning for the fabulous Fall Family Weekend silent auction we enjoyed on Friday night after a full day of activities. The Wes Burton band played some wonderful dancing music for us to enjoy under the stars as we dined on the delicious dinner FLIK prepared for us.

The Baltimore Gathering

Baltimore Gathering Thank you Ingrid and Don Obrecht P’16 for hosting a wonderful group of alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends on Thursday, October 25, for a lively Baltimore Gathering! If you were looking for good company, fabulous food, and a boatload of positive energy, the Obrecht house was the place to be. You know it’s a good party when the decibel level approaches Green and White Night, and no one wants to leave. Many thanks to Don and Ingrid, not only for sharing their daughter Lissie with us as a student, but also for a party none of us will ever forget!

Morgan '19 and Danielle '19 enjoying s'mores at Fall Family Weekend

Kudos to our Oldfields Parent Association officers, Jennifer Manning P’20, Karen West P’20, Joyce Smith P’21 and Kate Fisher ’91, P’22 for their tireless energy put forth in making the event a success. The OPA raised close to $4,000 from the silent auction to help celebrate our girls and teachers throughout the year. Special thanks to all who donated or bid on the auction items.

New York Gathering Ilana Feldberg Adelman '88 held a beautiful Gathering for Oldfields at her lovely apartment in New York City overlooking the Hudson River on November 8, 2018. Alumnae, parents, and friends came from all over the city to meet Head of School David Perfield and to see old friends. Instead of ending at 8 p.m. as planned, the last guests left closer to midnight! Now, that's a party! Many thanks to our gracious hostess, Ilana -- one of Oldfields' most devoted alumnae.

Thank you to Lestina Bellamy GP ’18 for preparing the candy and bake sale that everyone loved! We are so grateful for her support and love of Oldfields.

Our Riders Learn from the Best of the Best Riding Director Amy Phillips has recruited some amazing talent for the barn this year in Associate Director Ann Thal and Assistant Director Margaret Swanson. The riders are thriving under the daily lessons by our own skilled instructors. However, the Riding Program’s search for excellence does not end there. This fall, Oldfields hosted three incredible clinics, giving our students and the surrounding community the opportunity to learn from the best of the best: • Daniel Stewart, one of the world’s leading experts on equestrian sport psychology, athletics, and performance, spent two days coaching on how to "pressure proof" their riding. The clinics went well beyond the typical riding lesson, with workshops on performance psychology and Rider Boot Camp which utilized the space and equipment in the indoor arena to put the girls through quite a fitness work out!

• Joe Fargis, USEF Lifetime Achievement Award winner and three time Olympic Medal winner, is a regular at Oldfields. He brings new wisdom and insight every time he visits! • World-renowned Kathy Kusner was one of the first women to ride for the United States Equestrian Team, the first licensed female jockey, and the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in equestrian competition. Kathy accepted an invitation to work with Oldfields riders in the ring by Associate Director of Riding Ann Thal with whom she has been fast friends for many years. All the hard work and training is paying off! All seven riders and horses who attended a recent dressage show came home with ribbons. In addition, the two jumper riders who rode in the Fall Harvest "A" show at Swan Lake came home with blue ribbons.
