HELLO FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL ANSLEY SMITHWICK In the academic realm, it should come as no surprise that the May Program was again immensely successful this year. Students chose from 19 offerings which included the ever popular travel programs World War II and the Holocaust, Freedom Ride, and Costa Rica or on-campus options such as How Things Work, College Application Boot Camp, or Drawing from Nature. Several new courses were added and included 150 Things to Know Before You Graduate from Oldfields, Find Your Park: Exploration, Art, and History in the National Parks, Remarkable Robots, and Rhythm of Dance Intensive. A number of juniors and seniors completed independent projects, which ranged from volunteering in a children's medical clinic in Mali to shadowing a physical therapist in Baltimore. Dear Oldfields Family, It was wonderful to see so many of you back on campus for Alumnae Weekend and the 150th anniversary of this remarkable School! Your joy and excitement in coming back and reuniting with old friends and faculty was truly heartwarming and set the celebratory tone for the biggest party that Oldfields has ever hosted!
Faculty and students enjoyed taking part in all of the end-of-year celebrations, especially Graduation, which was a wonderfully bittersweet event, as it always is, as the as seniors walked barefoot in white dresses carrying red roses down Graduation Hill. The Class of 2017 was a strong class, and they provided imitable leadership throughout this past year. Academically adept as well, they earned almost $740,000.00 per year in scholarship money and matriculated at 40 universities in 20 states and two countries!
You not only showed your support and love for Oldfields by coming back for her birthday, you also continued to financially endorse the School. Thanks to your steadfast generosity, the goal of The Oldfields Fund was surpassed by $189,000, and the Spirit Campaign is just $1 million shy of its goal! Oldfields belongs to each and every one of us, and your gifts have an incalculable impact on the present and future of this exceptional place. Thank you for making possible the many wonderful campus improvements that have been made this spring and summer, including the following: • T he Jungle, admission kitchen, and new outdoor patio were renovated in preparation for the dedication of East Wing to Hawley and Wendy Rogers. • The Head's House received a long-deserved redecoration. • T he Admission Suite, the Front Parlor, much of McCulloch Commons, and the exteriors of Jane House and Centennial were all given a fresh coat of paint. • R enovations to the dormitories were made that included new flooring, new paint, and the return of lounges in every dorm. • A new state of the art scoreboard was installed at the playing fields.
In late August we welcome varsity student athletes back to campus for pre-season practices, seniors will arrive early for intensive leadership training, and faculty will participate in meetings as we prepare for the Opening of School on September 5.

MAY P RO G R A M I NSPIRE S ALU M NA TO G I VE B A C K Interview by Ryan W. Kirk, Associate Director of Development
This year, Oldfields was lucky to receive a wonderful scholarship donation from Taylor Jones '00 to support two dynamic and deserving students to travel with the World War II in Europe May Program. In a Q&A, Taylor kindly shares some of her thoughts about the importance of supporting this program, and why she decided to give to Oldfields for this purpose. OS: Why did you choose to make a gift to support students attending the WWII in Europe May Program?
"When I decided to give this donation to OS, I knew that I wanted a portion of it to directly impact a student and give them the opportunity to take part in something that they may not be able to afford.
TJ:
"I started thinking and immediately thought of my World War II May Program trip my junior year. During this two week adventure, we stood on the D-Day beaches, walked the Normandy cemeteries, and visited a concentration camp. I not only learned and experienced this important era of US history firsthand, I also learned a great deal about myself."
You mention learning a great deal about yourself on this trip. Many OS alumnae mention growing as a result of their May Program experiences. How else did you grow as a result of your trip? OS:
"I became more independent and learned many life skills – budgeting spending money and navigating in a foreign country without the help of a cell phone. This experience prepared me not only for college but life after college as well." TJ:
Considering how much the trip meant to you as a student, have you ever considered going back? OS:
"Actually, my family and I spent some time over the 4th of July holiday in Europe. Two of our stops were Normandy and Paris. Before we left, I asked my parents to send my travel book from the World War II trip that summarized my experience. It was entertaining to look back at my writing skills! It was amazing how much I remembered from our trip and fun to share this experience with my family." TJ:

Any final thoughts you'd like to share?
"It is hard to believe that 18 years have passed, and Anna Littlefield '07 is now a co-chaperone! I remember the day that I signed up for the trip outside of the Theatre on the activities board. I needed to ask my parents if I could go and remember my Dad telling me it would be a mistake to pass up this trip. It was going to be my first trip to Europe and an experience which I would never forget. TJ:
I am truly grateful for Oldfields; I would not be the person I am today without this experience and the education I received. Thank you, Mrs. Littlefield, for continuing this May Program tradition!”

Since my graduation in 1990, I have returned to Oldfields no less than a dozen times; as an alumna for Alumnae Weekend, as a parent with my daughter, Vivian, who has just completed her first year, and I have returned simply because I was in the neighborhood. During and after every one of those past visits, I was reminded of all the reasons I loved being at Oldfields and why it has remained such an important part of my life. But it was at the 150th Celebration this past April that the reality of what it meant not just to me, but to hundreds of other women, truly came to light. Being part of a class that has historically had one of the highest Alumnae Weekend return rates, I have not lost contact with many of my Oldfields sisters. In fact, I see several of them every few years and, thanks to social media, I know what is going on in most of their everyday lives. But there are others whom I was close to but have not seen in almost 30 years. The 150th Celebration provided the opportunity (and, the incentive) for several of those aforementioned people to return to campus. What I had not realized however, was how deeply nervous several of them felt about doing so.
For some, the nervousness stemmed from a fear of rejection – rejection from old friends and old adversaries; rejection of the person she had become since walking down Graduation Hill; rejection from a community she had not been in touch with in decades. Others feared questions that would inevitably be asked – and judgements (they assumed) would subsequently be cast. And for others, the nervousness came from a belief that too much time had simply passed for old connections to be mended. Having always been so connected to Oldfields myself, I confess the fears and apprehensions to return were not something I understood. I had always viewed a return to campus as a great opportunity to see old friends and to relive great memories. I never associated it with fear. Sitting at her home in Atlanta, a dear friend who had not returned to Oldfields in almost 30 years, watched Facebook feeds and text messages fly between groups of friends, the excitement palatable as plans for the reunion were eagerly made. Conflicted with a deep desire to see her old friends, but held back by the trifecta of the aforementioned fears, my friend put thoughts of attending the reunion to bed.

The weekend of April 27th brought out more than 800 women (and men) to celebrate Oldfields' 150th birthday. For three days, the campus buzzed with alumnae, students, along with current and former faculty and staff. Hawley and Wendy Rogers were forever memorialized in The Jungle on Friday evening. On Saturday, despite the spring heat, Commons Lawn overflowed with happy picnickers. Students gave campus tours to returning alumnae, and class photos were taken under flowering cherry trees. At a class party in a home a few girls reconnected and spontaneously raised money to donate to the Susan B. Komen Foundation in honour an Oldfields sister battling breast cancer. Back on campus, the gymnasium was decked out for the grand gala, resplendent in green and white. SUMMER 2017
Photos of children were passed around and inquiries about aging parents were lovingly made. Tears openly flowed as former teachers, dorm parents, and faculty were embraced. Old friendships were re-established. Past rivalries were laid to rest, and questions about our shared history were asked and answered – without judgement. Amidst the cacophony of delightful squeals and laughter, the tears of happiness and the endless rounds of hugs, my friends' fears and anxieties were finally laid to rest. As we sat on the old picnic tables outside the gym watching the fireworks explode above campus, I asked my Oldfields sisters if they were happy they had come. Their answers came quickly, swiftly and quietly: Absolutely. And they can't wait to return. 17

CLASS NOTES 1944 Maria Carter Satterfield - I am writing with some news of the Class of 1944. There are only six of us left out of twenty. I have written to all five and have heard from three. Barbara "Bobbi" Souder Fowle is living in Florida and is very involved in her church. She helps with the service and visits the sick. She sounds fine. Jean Washburn Clarke still lives in her house in East Hampton, NY, and has a place in Naples, FL. She still plays golf at age 90. She has been a widow for 10 years and had "two fine men as husbands." We both miss Carol "Pat" Allen King, with whom we kept in touch. Had a phone call from Miranda "Tosh" Mackintosh Freer from England who sounded her usual cheerful self. I haven't heard from Joan Carpenter Harms or Margaret "Jamie" Jamison but will send news if it comes. I am still in my same house (built by my grandfather), still drive, play bridge, and stay busy with 12 grands and 7 ½ greats. Was at the Bahamas until the end of March last spring.

1946 Margaret "Peggy" McElroy Campbell - We were a class of 17, and I would love to know who is left and how they are. I am still standing and playing not very good tennis but pretty good bridge. Spend summers at Fishers Island, NY. Three children, seven grandchildren and spouses, etc. and two great-grandsons, and the house is always full. My two years at Oldfields were memorable. Our little group had a lot of fun!

My memories of Oldfields are so indelible in my mind, even after all these years! Nancy Hollingsworth Lussi - I have a granddaughter, Tyler Lussi, who
plays soccer at Princeton. She is the highest scorer in the Ivy League for the second year and as of November 2, 2016, led the nation in shots per game (6.06). Also, Tyler was just named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in a row, NSCAA Second Team All-American, and one of 15 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalists. As of 2016, Tyler is on the US Under 23 Women's National Team. She will be a senior this fall.

full-time residents of the US, having sold our condo in Rome, Italy, in May 2016. It was so great to see everyone and catch up after all these years! I would say that we have all aged very well…like fine wines! I'm enjoying retirement, which has allowed me to spend more time with my four-year-old grandson, family, and friends. I've been busy gardening, volunteering in the local school and with my teachers' sorority, enjoying local theatre, and going on garden tours and historic "field trips" with my two Questers groups. Life is good. Happy summer to all!
Eric and I are going to Big Sky, MT, for my uncle's surprise 90th birthday in July followed by some hiking in Glacier National Park. A special hello and "I DO!!" for all in the great class of 1971. Melinda Trafford-Cassidy - I finally retired after 33 years with The Superior Court of Pennsylvania. Deborah "Debbie" Pool Wurzel - Still coming down off the wonderful high of the 150th reunion at OS. It was an amazing weekend seeing old friends from consecutive classes and several teachers. There was good food, dancing, shared stories, and fireworks. Oldfields covered every detail in making the campus look spectacular and the weekend enjoyable for everyone. My husband and I are still enjoying our new location on Skidaway Island outside Savannah, GA. There is lots of inspiring scenery here for my watercolors. We are new grandparents as of May and expecting our second grandchild in July. Life is sweet.

Hilary Gardner Swain - Candace "Candy" Brooks Widmer and I went to Europe together in May to relive our youth . . . besides having been on the first May program to Paris our senior year, we also went to Europe together after our freshman year in college. So we decided to visit some of the places we went to 40 plus years ago. We went to Copenhagen, Amsterdam, The Hague, and Paris... had a blast the entire time and could not stop laughing. We rode bikes all day in Copenhagen, 23
CL A S S N O TE S then in Paris, did it again, but with a private guide so we didn't get run over. Copenhagen is much more of a manageable city. Anyway, I recommend doing this kind of trip to any of you and can report that we don't feel a day older than the last time we went.
It was great to spend time with my class and the one before me, as many of my friends were from '72. Hearing how everyone's lives have turned out was fascinating. I started Oldfields as a freshman and really loved all four years and all the experiences that were had. Carol Counas and I did have a chance to speak to a couple of girls one-on-one and hear how so many things have changed and how many have not. Traditions still continue!!! I told many (if not all) of you I was soon to be a Grammie. Here's the proof. My precious granddaughter, Avery Anne, was born May 11, and she is perfect!! Her mom and dad are doing an awesome job with her, especially in the area of sharing her with me and her Bampy. We are truly blessed.

Dauntless, in Charlestown Marina, MA. Jim, my partner, and I live aboard our 43' Albin Trawler for about 5 (warmer) months out of the year. We live the rest of the time in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I would love to see anyone from Oldfields in either location! Jim and I travel quite a bit due to his job as a freelance photographer/photo journalist, specializing in mega yachts (jimraycroft.com). I'm his assistant, so even though it's hard work, we get to see amazing yachts and travel and meet interesting people. I have two girls, ages 25 and 28, who both live and work in LA. No marriages or grand babies as of yet, but I'm hopeful! I hope that my schedule will allow me to come to Oldfields again for the class of 1973's 45th reunion. It was so great seeing my old friends and teachers. Oldfields definitely holds a dear place in my heart. Go Whites!!

I had not visited Oldfields since the day I walked down Graduation Hill 44 years ago (wow, did I just write that?). The campus looks phenomenal with all the landscaping, upkeep of the wonderful older buildings, and additions of new ones. At the same time, in so many ways it looks just as I remember it.

Elizabeth "Betsy" McLean Woodruff - It was so much fun going back to the 150th and seeing everyone. It sure didn't seem like 44 years since we graduated! I'm still living in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and spend my
winters in Vero Beach, Florida. None of my boys are married yet, so no grandchildren. Three of the boys now live in California. Jeff does web design, and Robby does oystering. Scott, based out of California, has a successful reggae band (Stick Figure), and he spends much of the year traveling this country and others doing concerts. He is hoping to get his 6th CD released this fall. Will is in Duxbury as a charter fishing captain and spends the winters fishing out of Barbados. Thanks to Facebook, I've reconnected with many of my Oldfields pals!

Lisa Rowan '74 sadly passed away this winter from cancer, and Diana Kaiser Bulger '74, Elizabeth "Lizette" Evans Sherrill '74, Marion Shields Albu '74, and I attended her service. It was very low key, and we had the pleasure of spending time with Lisa's son, Chrystopher Kimmel, who, at the age of 23, is a very outstanding individual. Lisa's passing was very much a shock to us all, as she was such a force to be reckoned with and you always knew when she was near!! I spent a lot of time with Willette Brown-Nevens '75 this winter. She has bought a small farm in Okeechobee, FL, and is working towards having her own business teaching dressage. She's quite an accomplished equestrian, has just gotten her "R" rating for judging, and I had the opportunity to watch her work with a new horse to compete at the Grand Prix level, which is the highest level in dressage. Spent many Saturday nights at Wellington under the lights with Marion Shields Albu watching all the top riders in the world competing. Also spent time with Riley Chapin '83 hanging out by the pool and watching her significant other play sax in a Blues Brothers Band, which was lots of fun. Ran into Polly Lewis Rowles '75 last year, and I saw her this winter at a trunk show in Delray Beach, FL. She is quite an accomplished artist, and I attended a cocktail party in her honor.
Aconcagua. Over New Years, she spent 3 weeks hiking to the South Pole and then climbed Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica. Then she set her sights on Everest, having to go do training at Cayambe in the Ecuadorian Andes in March, where she learned how to cross crevices on ladders. Have you ever read Into Thin Air? This year she went to Nepal to hike into base camp at Everest to start the month-long process of acclimatizing to the altitude. She spent a month there doing the acclimatization climbs, but unfortunately on her third trip she suffered from hypoxia, a form of altitude sickness, and the doctors wouldn't let her continue. When I've talked to her about it, she said she's not giving up and will continue her quest! Who'da thunk that little ol' Auds would be reaching such great heights! Had a great time with Colby Gordon Johnson '74 P'07 at the 150th Anniversary this spring, and she hasn't changed a bit. Took Elizabeth "Betsy" McLean Woodruff '73, Audrey Snyder Felske '73, and Michelle "Chellie" Blake Kew '73 to The Maryland Hunt Cup. I love introducing first timers to all the excitement and fanfare. The Reunion Weekend was fabulous! I hope they do it every five years! Saw so many faces, I can't even recount them all. I think the biggest surprise was seeing Hilary Thompson '77, but unfortunately didn't get much of a chance to talk as she was leaving for Hunt Cup. Although there were so many people that I barely got a chance to talk to, I did get to talk with Hawley and Wendy Rogers, Taylor and Judy Smith, had wonderful talk with my everyone's favorite, the Hordubays, and had a very interesting conversation with the Cliffords about climbing onto the roof of the gym and riding horses over to the Manor Tavern! I have also kept in touch with Tracey Hope-Shor '74, Cary Igleheart Grady '74, Cameron Davis Ellison '74, my roomie, Barrie Blazer Conner '74, Cassandra "Cass" Lowe Vermillion '74, and Margot Houstoun Ritchie '74. Please reach out and keep in touch. There are so many of you that we truly want to hear from and catch up with. Getting together is the best medicine for everything, and we're at the age where time and gravity are starting to take their toll, and it's easy to commiserate with those of us who used to break into the kitchen and eat gingerbread all night!!!

The biggest news and most impressive is that Audrey Coxe Cadwallader '74 has been afflicted with the mountaineering addiction,
and she has been crossing the globe climbing as many mountains as she can. At first I think it started as a hobby, doing the “14ers,” but quickly became an obsession. She went to base camp at Everest 3 years ago, climbed Mont Blanc last summer, then went to South America to do SUMMER 2017

I missed our 35th class reunion because I was having major surgery to remove stage III fallopian cancer and stage II ovarian cancer. I would have much rather been with my classmates catching up. I had six rounds of chemotherapy and lost every single piece of hair on my body including my eyelashes! It has been a life altering and very humbling experience. I am eight months cancer free since my last chemo treatment! I would love to hear from any and all of my OS friends to reconnect and catch up. Life is too short. She is conducting research for the summer and then will return for round two. She amazes us at every turn! We are exhausted just watching her. Oldfields Celebration weekend! Seeing all my peers and teachers reminded me of why I love Oldfields as much as I do. My hometown of Nashville continues to grow daily with people from all over the country finding their new home in Music City. On June 2, it was finally my turn to walk up the hill to Immanuel Church for Oldfields' Baccalaureate, and sit in the pews as generations of my Oldfields sisters had. I did not know what to expect, but I was in for a wonderful surprise. Alumna Jennevee “India” Frias Crespo '01 gave an eloquent and incredibly insightful commencement address to my Class of 2017. A graduate of Columbia University, she has built a solid and wildly successful career as a financial advisor. Growing up in the South Bronx for most of her life, then attending Oldfields, I admired her strong voice as she spoke to conquering adversity, experiencing change, and discovering self-worth.

They continued believing in me - all through study hall and extra help and in my free periods.” Being the diverse, well-rounded, young women that we are, the senior girls were captivated by her words, as Crespo spoke not only to those with similar stories, but to every girl in the room. One wise Oldfields alumna, to 44 future, 'wise' Oldfields alumnae… “Y ou will be told you are too young. Not enough or too much. Too quiet or too loud. Too hard or too soft. You will be defined based on your gender, or how you identify, or by what people think about where you come from. You will be assured that certain doors are closed to you. You will find yourselves in college classrooms where you are overlooked and in offices where no one cares for your input. And in those moments you will have to choose. Will you accept this?”

As a recent graduate, I see and listen to alumnae like India, and I reminded of the strength that Oldfields has given to so many women. There is no stronger force than a successful, confident young woman, and Ms. Crespo embodied those qualities. The wisdom she dispelled to us will stay in my mind for years to come, and makes me wonder if any of my fellow classmates may become the commencement speaker for a future class of Oldfields. Angelica "Jelly" Jackson-Thomas - I am married to Dwayne Thomas, and we have a baby girl, Phoenix Sojourner Jackson-Thomas, born on December 31, 2016. We had a ball at OS 150 – Go Greens! We recently started a non-profit organization called Journey Beyond, Inc. that fights generational poverty by teaching global competence (@JourneyBeyondMD). Last year I was the Barrymore-Nominated leading actress in the Philadelphia area for the musical Black Nativity. Shin Hae Lee - Of course, I was so happy to see my people when I went back for the 150th Anniversary Reunion. Before returning, I was really nervous because I never visited after I graduated. I wondered, "Will the faculty and girls welcome me??" When I arrived, the girls shouted "Shinhae!!!!" I cried as they hugged me. I gave chocolates to some friends and faculty. I had a conversation with Mr. Tanner-Read, and he mentioned about when I received the Head of School Award. I cried again. I was touched that he remembered that!! He said he is so glad that things are going well for me. I cried one more time in the car as I left. No one forgot me!! They were very happy to see me, and I was happy to see them. I was very impressed. My mom said people at Oldfields didn't forget me because I was a star. My parents and I think that OS is the best high school. No racism! Great educational system! Love and respect! I want to go there in my next life. I can't believe that people ever leave! Let's keep in touch and not forget each other! We are a family. Hope we can see each other next year. Love everyone so much! Go Green! Go White! God's grace be with you.

Director of Admissions, 1992-1995) Almost exactly 25 years after I started working for Jan Scott in Admissions at Oldfields in my first "real" job, I am now the Director of Admissions and Marketing at Peabody School (PreK-8) in Charlottesville, Virginia. I know this would make Jan happy. I wish I could pick up the phone and tell her! After leaving Oldfields, I received my master's in education from Harvard, and I went into management consulting with several firms. I got married and now have a freshman in high school and a 7th grader, and we have been in Charlottesville for 12 years. Despite all the adventures along the way, I've always remembered those days at OS with great fondness, both for the students and the amazing faculty I worked with. I'm happy to be back in admissions after all this time, and hope I can find an excuse to come visit Old House soon! I hope everyone is well there!

returned to the horse world and the show ring. She is currently the Assistant Trainer at Swan Lake Stables in Littlestown, PA. Her TB, Sea Rescue, was recently champion at the Blue Rock Classic A Show as well as the McDonogh Summer Classic and the Swan Lake Kick-off Classic in the TB Division. Sea Rescue retired from racing after winning the West Virginia Breeders Classic and seems to enjoy his new life as a show hunter. Martha Valentine – (past faculty member and Director of Dance Martha (Kleine) Valentine -1985-1992) Martha lives in Richmond, VA, where she is the owner of the Joy of Pilates, a Pilates personal training business. She loves staying in touch with her former OS students and was thrilled to see the OS Dance Department featured in the The Lamp newsletter this summer with over 50 students in the Spring Dance Concert. Erin Wilson '03 - I was married on November 7, 2014, to Christopher Alan McCurdy in Pennsylvania. We actually visited the Justice of the Peace on that day (and eloped!), and then had a small wedding ceremony for friends and family on December 22, 2014, at McDaniel College in Westminster where I went to college. My husband and I are serving in Zambia with HOPE International. We've been here for a year and will stay for at least one more.
I just received a packet of mail from the US, and in it was a beautiful 2017 calendar with gorgeous pictures of the OS campus. I was a day student from 1999-2003, and the OS campus was only about 20 minutes from my home. So seeing pictures of Glencoe brings amazing memories of my Maryland roots! I was feeling a bit homesick lately, to be honest, so this calendar came at the perfect time! I can't wait to hang it up and feel a little closer to home.

Senor Anguita!
There is one very special “keeper of the spirit” who is leaving us this year. It is with very mixed emotions that we say goodbye to an outstanding master teacher who for 28 wonderful years taught science and math to hundreds of Oldfields girls, our very own Justo Anguita.
Throughout all those years, Justo challenged the minds of students with functions, formulas, physics, and algorithms, reminding us nearly every day that women in science are a force to be reckoned with. With his intuitive understanding of young minds and his serious, absolute approach to mathematics and science,
Mr. Anguita instilled within his students the drive to continually persevere and succeed. Beyond his influential role with the girls, Justo was also a cherished and loyal friend to the colleagues with whom he worked day in and day out. His sense of humor, his wide smile, and his enthusiasm were contagious.
"I was delighted when I returned to Oldfields after being away for 20 years to be greeted by Justo’s big smile and his welcoming words. I figured that all was right with the world. Justo was a demanding yet understanding teacher. He embodied the Oldfields philosophy, being demanding, yet supportive. Whenever I would walk in on his class, there I saw confident girls who were at ease, very comfortable asking questions, emanating joy. " I will always be grateful for Justo’s many contributions to Oldfields over his long and distinguished career as science teacher and ultimately as Science Department Chair. He challenged his students but was always willing to spend whatever time was necessary to help students understand the material. Often it wasn’t enough that a student find the “right answer,” but it was important that she understand the process of finding the right answer. He exemplified the treasured Oldfields commitment to giving students whatever support they needed outside the classroom. Whatever the academic or community activity, Justo brought to it professionalism, good humor, kindness, and a broad smile. He and Hilary were our closest neighbors in Garden House dormitory during our last decade in the Head’s House. We were most grateful that they made such an effort to include us in the life of their Garden House Family."
"If I was going to talk about Mr. Anguita, I could write a book, but I would never miss mentioning that he has been a special teacher to all students at Oldfields, the ones he taught and the ones he didn’t teach. He makes sure that no student is left behind in his class, and he provides helpful advice to his students in order to help them build a bright future full of success. Hawley Rogers, Headmaster 1976-1997 The impact that one incredible teacher can make on his students is immeasurable, and Justo has had that impact for nearly three decades. While we are sad to see him leave the classroom, at the same time we wish him everything he is hoping for in his retirement. Luckily, he’ll still be seen around the campus, as his wife, Hilary Bates, will continue teaching Spanish. His new role will be that of a cheerleader, and our hearts will feel a little warmer each time we see him.
