The Ultimate Sporting Life Once one of the most prestigious gun clubs in the world, the story of the Pinehurst Gun Club hearkens back to 1895, when the original Gun Club was built by Pinehurst’s founder, Massachusetts industrialist James W. Tufts, the son of a gunsmith, in his own backyard. Countless thousands flocked to the Gun Club to shoot trap, skeet, and sporting clays, most notably Theodore Roosevelt, Bing Crosby, Amelia Earhart, John Philip Sousa among many others—but none commanded more fame than Annie Oakley, the greatest sharpshooter of all time, and the Pinehurst Gun Club’s first shooting instructor. From 1915 to 1922, Annie taught thousands of men, women and children to shoot while her husband, Frank Butler, developed the Gun Club as its first manager. It was Butler who, with the Gun Club’s first secretarytreasurer, the celebrated golf course architect Donald Ross, designed the shooting fields. It is our conviction to “bring back” the Gun Club and build upon its unparalleled legacy of almost 100 years— and we are seeking Investors and Members—sportsmen and sportswomen who would share our vision. Related sporting pursuits collectively distinguished the Pinehurst Gun Club as the largest, grandest, most comprehensive sporting facility in America. These were the Pinehurst Stables, Pinehurst Kennels, and the Pinehurst Shooting Preserve—and we aim to bring them back.

IN 1895, WEALTHY BOSTON INDUSTRIALIST JAMES W. TUFTS decided on an impulse to build a Yankee village in the heart of the Confederate South as a winter sanatorium for middle-class Northern consumptives. This extraordinary undertaking came about as a result of a letter he received from his friend and Massachusetts neighbor, the great American author and Unitarian minister, Reverend Edward Everett Hale. Hale had urged Tufts to stop at Southern Pines, North Carolina on his unexpected return home after the catastrophic Great Freeze of 1895 that paralyzed Florida forced Tufts, a semi-invalid, to cut short his winter in Palm Beach. “Breathe the healthful piney air,” Hale instructed Tufts.

Southern Pines was founded in 1885 in the southeastern part of the “Old North State,” as North Carolina is known, in the Sandhills region, a strip of ancient sand dunes that demarcates the Piedmont, and was Atlantic oceanfront property 20 million years ago. This unique geography imbued the region with longleaf plantation pines and an unusual climate that has been recognized for its distinctive healing powers since native American tribes settled the region prior to 1500. When, in late December 1894, the “Atlantic Special” train on the Seaboard AirLine Railroad pulled into Southern Pines station, Tufts stepped out onto the platform—and drew a long, deep breath. Immediately he felt improved by the air and that very day, took part of the fortune he had amassed as the innovator and manufacturer of the soda fountain machine, bought 500 acres just west of Southern Pines, and contracted to acquire another 6,000. Back home, he met another Massachusetts friend and neighbor, Frederick Law Olmsted, “father of landscape architecture in America” and designer of New York’s Central Park and asked him to design a village. Tufts named it “Pinehurst” which, in Old English, means “a wooded rise” of pines.

The air would restore the body; communing with nature would replenish the soul, and $4.50 a week room and board paid for a comfortable suite at the elegant Holly Inn, or any one of the 30 New England white clapboard guest cottages that Tufts built. Tufts broke 2

ground on June 17, 1895 and on New Year’s Eve, Pinehurst Resort was open for business.

However, by the second season, his marketing plan was forced to radically change. It was determined that consumption, a worldwide epidemic, was highly contagious with high fatality rate. Later known as tuberculosis, consumptives were summarily banned from setting foot in Pinehurst and its boundaries were fenced. A health certificate was now mandatory t into Pinehurst. To assure Pinehurst Resort’s success, opulence was raised to the highest possible standards to now attract a wealthy clientele. The response was incredible and to satisfy the enormous demand, a second hotel, The Carolina, called “the Jewel of the South,” was built in 1900. The resort community prospered, burgeoning with the popularity in golf is recognized as “the cradle of golf in America,” host of more U.S. Open golf tournaments than any other course in the country, and has become one of the most beautiful and desirable communities to live in to this very day.

Tennis, horseback riding, bird-watching, and nature walks were daily activities that guests enjoyed at Pinehurst Resort. But it was trap shooting and quail hunting that James Tufts, the son of a Cambridge, Massachusetts gunsmith, would champion as Pinehurst’s principle outdoor draw. Unadulterated fields and forests were brimming with native bobwhite quail. Tufts leased 45,000 acres and promoted Pinehurst in Northern newspapers, such as the New York Times, and magazines, such as Vanity Fair, as the “home of bobwhite quail hunting in the South.” Though poor health prevented him from exercising his lifelong passion for target shooting, Tufts, an enthusiastic spectator, built a clubhouse and shooting grounds in his own backyard so he could sit on his porch and participate in trap shooting vicariously. Hence, the Pinehurst Gun Club was born.

The Pinehurst Gun Club immediately became a mecca for trap shooters at a time when target shoot preceded baseball as America’s first spectator sport. The resort town flourished, exquisite private estates and “cottages” in the manner of Newport, Rhode Island were built. The 3

first resort town in the American South brought Yankees and Confederates, and Northern whites who fought to free Black slaves together in a social environment for the very first time since the Civil War. President Theodore Roosevelt, a noted sportsman, came to Pinehurst often as his youngest daughter, lived in nearby Carthage. Automobile inventor Henry Ford adopted the fair employment agreements spearheaded by James Tufts at his Boston factories for his own plants in Detroit. Writer Mark Twain came. Composer of America’s national marches, John Phillip Sousa, a champion trap shooter, came every season; indeed, he composed “Stars and Stripes Forever” between trap competitions at the Pinehurst Gun Club. Trainloads of affluent Northerners who fled winter snows flocked to Pinehurst’s balmy clime and wingshooters, whose bird hunting season ended December 31, extended their season by three months, to the end of March, by spending the winter in Pinehurst.

By Pinehurst’s fourth season, an increasing number of guests began arriving with their golf clubs to play the “new” game of golf, which had crossed the Atlantic from Britain and was storming the North. Soon the manager of the Pinehurst Dairy complained to Tufts that guests were hitting gutta percha balls, and his cows, on the cow pastures—and the cows, in defiance, had stopped giving milk. Tufts believed the game of golf was a passing fad but in 1899, he hired away a Scottish immigrant from. His name was Donald Ross. and in 1907, he designed what would become the masterwork of his long, unparalleled career in golf course architecture— Pinehurst No. 2, on the “bucket list” of every golf enthusiast, host of countless tournaments, and sister course to St. Andrews, Scotland. Golf grew exponentially and for the first 14 years of Pinehurst’s life, vied in popularity with skeet and trap shooting. Interestingly, Ross—an ardent gunner from his boyhood days in the Highlands of Scotland—became the first secretarytreasurer of Pinehurst Gun Club when it was formally organized in 1903. Leonard Tufts, who inherited Pinehurst Resort and its management upon his spectacular father’s untimely death the year before, became the Gun Club’s first president.

Leonard’s first order of business for the Gun Club was to find a means to avoid injuries inflicted on trappers who operated the cumbersome manual clay target traps. A student of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), he invented and patented the first motorized trap (and in the process, invented the first motor capable of operating at angled elevations.) Donald Ross utilized his ability as a golf course architect to layout the shooting fields. The newest model guns by Winchester, Parker, and Browning were seen at the Gun Club and by the early 1920s, eight annual open tournaments were being held, drawing hundreds of registered shooters from all over the world to compete for high stakes trap tournaments. Indeed, in 1921, the winner’s purse for the Midwinter Tournament was a staggering $2,100—the buying power of almost $30,000 today. However, the greatest innovations to the Pinehurst Gun Club and indeed, the sport of trap, were implemented between 1915 and 1924 by Frank Butler, a professional sharpshooter, and the husband of “America’s Sweetheart,” Annie Oakley.

Pinehurst Gun Club became a household word when the Butlers adopted Pinehurst as their seasonal home in 1915. Annie became Pinehurst Gun Club’s first shooting instructor and Frank, its first manager. Heralded as “a wonder of the world,” the word “superstar” was actually invented for her. In the course of her many seasons in Pinehurst, Annie taught thousands of men and women to shoot—over 4,000 women alone in her first two seasons here—while Frank’s many innovations changed the face of trap.

For almost a century, the Pinehurst Gun Club a mecca for shooting sports enthusiasts the world over. The oldest resort gun club in America, it also ranked as one of the three top shooting clubs in the world—until 1993, years after the Tufts family sold Pinehurst. The Resort was riding the crest of the golf wave when it was decided to level the shooting fields to build another golf course. The clubhouse was demolished, and the legendary Pinehurst Gun Club was no more.

Today, after an absence of a quarter of a century, the Pinehurst Gun Club will be reborn as the shooting aspect of the Old Carolina Hunt Club, a private, limited membership sporting club. Men and women who love sport shooting and all the quality times it affords can join a very unique group of individuals who appreciate our sporting heritage and are willing to carry on the traditions of the Pinehurst Gun Club. These individuals will be part of something exceptional, something beautiful, tangible, and sustainable for generations to come. Our members can be assured of quality sporting experiences, with access to over a half-dozen premier clay target shooting clubs within an hour’s drive of Pinehurst, quail hunting in the true Southern tradition, and pheasant and duck shooting, individually arranged for our members and their shooting parties. And, with over 65,000 acres of public hunting land nearby, turkey and deer hunting are also available. Members will also have the advantage of playing golf at Pinehurst, Mid Pines, Southern Pines, and Forest Creek golf clubs—only some of over 42 area golf courses. In addition, the area is a renowned equestrian haven with access to thousands of acres for horseback riding.

GOLF WAS IN ITS INFANCY in America when the popular pastimes of clay target shooting and quail hunting were among Pinehurst’s principle recreational offerings, attracting guests from late fall to early spring. We build upon this colorful history in Field Sports and establish this heritage as a key component in our plan for the new Pinehurst Gun Club at the Old Carolina Hunt Club. We believe this will not only appeal to Field Sports enthusiasts but encourage our Members to come for an extended stay at their “home away from home.”

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has been the trade association for the outdoor industry since 1961.

It statistically tracks the various disciplines within the shooting sports in America. The following facts are taken from the NSSF’s current overview, “Target Shooting in America, Millions of Shooters, Billions of Dollars”— • The Shooting Sports industry in the United States today is a $6 billion business; 24

• There are a minimum of 20 million Recreational Target shooters in the U.S.; • 48% of Recreational Target Shooters are Shotgun Shooters, or 9.62 million people; • 80% of the Recreational Target Shotgun Shooters shoot Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays and Five Stand, or 7.7 million people; • All Recreational Target activities account for $9.9 billion in sales; • Recreational Target Shotgun Shooters account for $4.76 billion in sales annually; • All Recreational Target Shooters spend, as a group, $1.75 billion in fuel, food, lodging and travel-related services. Of this number, Clay Target (Shotgun) Shooters spend $672 million annually.

Applying numbers pertaining to North Carolina and extending this information: • There are 305,000 clay shooters in North Carolina alone; they spend almost 5 million days at their sport; • Retail sales for Recreational Target Shooters in North Carolina are $284 million annually. Of this number, $107.5 million is spent by Clay Target (Shotgun) Shooters; • If one-percent of North Carolina’s Clay Target Shooters spent one night at The Resort hotels as part of a recreational package, 3,050 nights of lodging would be added annually to The Resort’s revenue stream. Even one-tenth of one-percent, or 305 nights, would add revenue of over $150,000 based on a $500 Field Sports package; • Of the 9.72 million people who live in North Carolina, 37%, or 3.6 million, participate in Field Sports. 59,000 hunt quail and small game. This indicates that nationwide, the number of quail hunters in the United States numbers in the several hundred thousand.

• 42% of Virginians hunt; 37% of South Carolinians; 37% of Georgians participate in Field Sports; • Quail hunting is a rich Southern tradition which dates back to pre-Civil War days. It is also popular from Texas, east: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. It is particularly popular among New Englanders, who have historically traveled to the South after Christmas, when grouse hunting season ends in that part of the country and snow blankets the ground, to extend their bird-hunting season for three more months, through March.

The North Course and The South Course at Forest Creek Country Club Designed by TOM FAZIO The South Course opened in 1996, patterned after Augusta National, Fazio’s approach was low profile in nature, essentially draping the holes across the land creating an unforced natural appearance. The South Course was selected by Golf Digest as the third best new course in the country, and Pinehurst Magazine named it the second best golf experience in the Pinehurst area; second only to Pinehurst Course No. 2 based on the votes of area head golf professionals.

Forest Creek The North Course The North Course joined the top 100 residential courses in the country upon its opening in 2005. Featuring sprawling sandy waste areas along with deeper and ragged edged bunkers with a pine barrens feel. The greatest challenge of the North Course, and the most picturesque, is the string of holes (15, 16 and 17) wrapped around a large lake for a unique and invigorating experience.

If you want to unwind after a round of golf or have an elegant dinner with family and friends, the Forest Creek Clubhouse, with its lake views, veranda and outdoor dining areas, creates the perfect setting for Members of the Old Carolina Hunt Club and their guests. Forest Creek Country Club features a Grand Dining Room designed for special events and tournament gatherings. Upon entering the Southern manor-style home, visitors will find a quaint library and private dining areas. For those taking advantage of the favorable Pinehurst weather, the design introduces them to a spectacular outdoor patio area that overlooks the 9th and 18th holes of the South Course. The Clubhouse also features a private dining room equipped for business meetings to accommodate National Members’ corporate outings.

Pinehurst No. 2, the centerpiece of Pinehurst Resort, remains one of the world’s most celebrated golf courses. It has served as the site of more single golf championships than any course in America and

hosted back-to-back U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open Championships for the first time in 2014.

The U.S. Open will return in 2024.

Opened in 1907, No. 2 was designed by Donald Ross, who called it “the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed.” Ross was associated with the course for nearly a half-century, improving the course continually until his death in 1948. No. 2 is best known for its crowned, undulating greens, which are some of the most complex and widely hailed in the world. Ross believed in providing golfers with strategic choices, and Pinehurst No. 2 was intended to epitomize that philosophy.

In February of 2010, the design firm of Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw began to restore the natural and strategic characteristics that were the essence of Ross’s original design. The project included the removal of about 35 acres of turf and the reintroduction of hardpan, natural bunker edges, and native wire grasses. Today, you are playing the restored course as originally envisioned.

PINEHURST NO. 1 – Designed in 1900 by DONALD ROSS It all started here in 1898. Dr. Leroy Culver built the first nine holes and John Dunn Tucker added the next nine, but it is clearly Donald Ross’s touch that you feel on Pinehurst’s first golf course. Recalling his Scottish heritage, Ross made liberal use of bunkers, both across the fairway and around the green. Don’t let the short 6,089-yard par 70 fool you; wild drives or a sloppy short game can make for a long day. No. 1 was a great start for Pinehurst.

PINEHURST No. 3 – Designed in 1910 by DONALD ROSS

This classic Donald Ross design (circa 1910) is the shortest course at Pinehurst at just 5,155 yards. But don’t let its modest distance fool you – this is a fun par 68 that was renovated this year to return many of Ross’s original design flourishes and characteristics throughout the classic layout.

Tiny elevated greens – averaging just 4,500 square feet each – demand precision, the kind of delicate approaches that will surely come in handy as you gear up for No. 2. An interesting combination of par-3s and shorter par-4s provide ample opportunities to play aggressively in search of a low score. But beware – accuracy and distance control also come into play on a number of well-conceived doglegs. Pinehurst No. 3 reopened in spring of 2017 after restoring much of Donald Ross’ spirit and vision.

PINEHURST No. 5 – Designed by ELLIS MAPLES

No. 5 was designed in 1961 by Ellis Maples, a protégé of Donald Ross, and part of North Carolina’s first family of golf course design and construction.

Like Ross, Maples believed that it was the designer’s job to find the golf course that resided in the land’s structure, and his fealty to the land is evident in No. 5’s variety—holes meandering up and down, left and right, and over water. The combination of water carries, elevated greens and overall greater yardage favors longer hitters.

One of Pinehurst’s most picturesque holes, the par3 14th, is here. Known as the Cathedral Hole, it’s fronted by a pond and encircled by a stand of ancient pines, the tops of which resemble the pipes of an organ.

PINEHURST No. 6 Designed by GEORGE and TOM FAZIO No. 6 rests a few miles from the center of Pinehurst and is also a departure from the first five courses in design and temperament.

Tom and his uncle George, a famed designer in his own right, began work on No. 6 in 1975. The result was a more rugged, undulating track that demands bigger drives and more aggressive approaches. Tom returned in 2005 to carve new bunkers, soften angles and seed faster greens. The addition of native wiregrass throughout the course gives it a distinctive Pinehurst feel.

PINEHURST No. 7 DESIGNED BY REES JONES Rees Jones – son of Robert Trent and brother of Robert Trent, Jr. – built No. 7 in 1986, on the site of a forgotten nine-hole employee course laid out by Donald Ross. The layout unfolds overdramatic, hilly terrain that’s dotted with wetlands in lower-lying areas. No. 7 has many colorful flourishes. Old bunkers from the employee course adorn the tee of the par-4 4th hole; one wetlands area, the “Devil’s Gut,” must be cleared on your approach to the short par-4 7th hole, and Jones’ trademark “Fingers” bunker demands accuracy on 16. Every hole on No. 7 features something to test your game. Just ask Tiger Woods, who won his lone Pinehurst title to date here in the 1992 Big I Junior Classic.

PINEHURST No. 8 Designed by TOM FAZIO

Building a new course grand enough to celebrate Pinehurst’s first 100 years might intimidate some architects, but Tom Fazio took on the assignment with gusto. No. 8 – which opened in 1996 – combines classic Donald Ross concepts with the whimsical snarls that have become Fazio’s calling card.

Fazio took full advantage of the 420 acres of rolling terrain and natural wetlands to fashion a course that’s visually enthralling and challenging yet fun to play; it’s a nod to No. 2, but hardly a replication. Many feel No. 8 synthesizes all the elements of the Pinehurst golf experience into one layout.

This championship track has twice been home to the PGA Club Pro Championship. Just a short drive from the main club, the Pinehurst spirit is quite alive at No. 8 and served as the companion course for the 2017 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship

PINEHURST No. 9 Designed by JACK NICKLAUS

Jack Nicklaus constructed a masterpiece set amidst the long leaf pines. This 18-hole championship layout features classic Nicklaus architecture: wide fairways, lush course conditions and undulating putting surfaces that test your mind and your true golfing ability. Pinehurst No. 9 is a magnificent 7,122-yard course and is as meticulously designed as it is compelling. An intriguingly well-balanced course which, according to Golf Digest, “has come to enhance even the lofty Sandhills image for world-class golf amenities.� Each hole has been customized to create a great diversity in the way it can be played. Added to this uniqueness are tall pines, grassy swales, groomed waste areas and a natural variety of lakes and stream beds beautifully fashioned to give No. 9 its own distinctive look.

MID PINES GOLF COURSE PINE NEEDLES SOUTHERN PINES GOLF CLUB A rarity among Donald Ross masterpieces, Mid Pines Golf Course remains exactly as the world-renowned architect built it in 1921 and impeccably restored by Kyle Franz in 2013. The renovation was honored with GOLF Magazine’s Best U.S. Resort Renovation and Restoration of the Year. The course, often characterized as “pure Donald Ross,” was designed to fit perfectly into the natural landscape, as was Ross’s signature approach.

Mid Pines was not intended to be a daunting challenge for the finest players competing under championship conditions but was envisioned as a course that would offer friendly 48

competition for members and guests of a private club and resort. However, fanatics and pros have taken note of the perfectly preserved course and Mid Pines has become a classic gem, which has now played host to many national competitions including the 2002 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.

Open for play in 1906, Southern Pines Golf Course is one of Donald Ross’s earliest original course designs. Winding around a series of knolls and ridges, the course offers some of the most dramatic golf terrain in the Sandhills, making it difficult to tell where nature’s design ends and Ross’s begins. At 6,500 yards, this extraordinary course challenges every level of play.

EQUESTRIAN ACTIVITIES

The Walthour-Moss Foundation is an equestrian paradise. Since 1978, the foundation has provided miles and miles of longleaf pine-lined sand trails for pleasure riders, carriage drivers and foxhunters. Established upon the death of William O. “Pappy” Moss to ensure the preservation of the open land he and his wife, Virginia “Ginnie” Walthour Moss so treasured, the foundation now encompasses more than 4,000 acres and is the home to the endangered redcockaded woodpecker, and a number of other varieties of birds, deer, raccoons, opossums, red 50

and grey foxes, and rare fox squirrels, as well as a number of rare plant species. In 2013, 2,800 acres of the Walthour-Moss Foundation property was named to the National Register of Historic Places, serving to further protect the unique property from development for years to come.

A few miles to the west in the Village of Pinehurst lies the historic Pinehurst Harness Track.

Officially opened in 1915, the Harness Track features 110 acres, three training tracks, an open-air all-weather show ring, 18 barns and the historic Fair Barn. Named to the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 22, 1992, the Harness Track has served as a winter training facility for Standardbred horses since 1915 and is currently also the venue for a winter dressage series, a nationally recognized fall dressage show and spring matinee races. It is also the home of the Carolina Polocrosse Club, which hosts tournaments annually in May and September. In 2015, the Pinehurst Harness Track celebrated its 100th anniversary. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1992, the Harness Track serves as a winter training facility for standardbred horses and as a venue for shows and races. When it opened in 1915, the Harness Track was privately owned and operated by a training club. In addition to owning the land, the club built a barn on the property. Today, the Harness Track is owned by the village of Pinehurst, but a training club continues to be a driving force at the track.

A registered club for 50 years, the Pinehurst Driving and Training Club is completely volunteer.

Its members include owners, trainers and assistant trainers. The club is open only to those who work or train at the Harness Track. Each year, the Pinehurst Driving and Training Club hosts a Spring Matinee Day. Set for Saturday, April 12, the event is open to the public. The matinee races showcase young horses who have been training at the Harness Track. The club will put on eight races during the day. There is no betting on the races, but prizes donated by local merchants will be awarded. The club also holds qualifying races throughout the year.

Twelve or so miles to the east, just inside the Hoke County line, is the Carolina Horse Park. Founded in 1997, the horse park is located on 250 acres and features 192 permanent stalls, three show jumping rings, a dressage area with space for up to seven rings, six championship level cross country courses, driving obstacles and a 7/8-mile steeplechase track, all with ideal footing.

Southern Pines Horse Trials I and II, Longleaf Pines Horse Trials, Five Points Horse Trials, Cabin Branch Event Series, Southern Pines Combined Driving Event and both “A” and “C” rated hunter/jumper shows are on the schedule for 2015, as is the much anticipated Carolina International CIC and Horse Trial; and the Sandhills annual rite of spring, the 65th running of the annual Stoneybrook Steeplechase, a day of fancy hats, stick horse races, champagne and steeplechase racing. The Moore County Driving Club conducts driving clinics, pleasure shows and combined driving events, holds an annual holiday carriage parade and has social outings with lunch and live music and covered dish/ dinner meetings once a month. The club welcomes newcomers and seasoned drivers alike.

The Moore County Hounds is a privately owned pack of hounds, but offers a number of opportunities for the public to join during the year, including a series of trail rides with the Masters in April, May and June, a foxhunting clinic in late summer, the annual Hunter Pace in November, and Opening Meet on Thanksgiving Day.

The Carolina Polocrosse Club welcomes members of all riding abilities to join and learn more about the sport that combines elements of polo and lacrosse and is a competitive, yet family friendly, sport.

CULTURE The Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra Founded in 2009, The Carolina Philharmonic has quickly grown into one of the leading orchestras of North Carolina.

Headquartered in Pinehurst, the new, state-of-the-art Bradford Performance Center at Sandhills Community College is home to the Philharmonic. “What sets us apart onstage is our visceral joy in sharing the music and the stories behind the music with our audiences. Let the music move you, transform you, transport you,” says Maestro David Michael Wolff, pictured below. “We seek to break down the barriers between the stage and create a heated visceral ambiance for experiencing music with the vivacity and freshness of when it first formed in the composer's imagination.”

David Michael Wolff is now in his tenth season (2018/19) as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Carolina Philharmonic. Under Maestro Wolff’s leadership, the orchestra has rapidly grown from a small chamber orchestra into one of the leading symphony orchestras in the region. Two of the Philharmonic’s first concerts were at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall, and in the past few years the orchestra has come full circle with a meaningful partnership with the famed hall, bringing its education programs to the children of No rth Carolina. Along the way, Wolff was asked to create an interactive orchestral experience program for K -2 students called Encore! Kids, now serving thousands of children annually. Wolff is now 55

also the Principal Conductor & Artistic Director of Orchestra 2100, serving Washington, DC and Virginia. He made his orchestral dÊbut as piano soloist at the age of twelve, and just three years later entered college. A full scholarship student at the University of Washington, Wolff majored in Piano Performance while also pursuing a second major in Romance Languages. After obtaining his master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music under the direction of Byron Janis, celebrated pupil of Vladimir Horowitz, Wolff took up the baton. Three years of study in Rome led to performances throughout Italy both as pianist and conductor. Along the way, Wolff won numerous prizes in international competitions, including grand prize in the Naomi Management International Competition in New York City. Hundreds of performances across North America, Europe and Asia have solidified his reputation as one of the foremost performing artists of his generation. He has appeared numerous times at Carnegie Hall, both as pianist and conductor. Wolff resides in Pinehurst, NC with this wife and daughter. An avid linguist, Wolff speaks five languages and has been a sought-after coach of international opera stars as well as aspiring concert pianists. His diverse interests have led to collaborations with such artists as dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and choreographer Ruth Davidson Hahn and to numerous commissions to arrange and compose works for modern dance and other multi media projects. Career highlights include a return to Carnegie with The Carolina Philharmonic, a performance for President Bill Clinton’s Global Initiative in Arkansas, and performances in Shanghai at the World Expo and at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music with renowned Diva, Angela Brown. Wolff is author of Zen and the Art of Piano.
