“Welcome to Olby’s Creative Hub, Margate. If you are reading about us for the first time, thank you for your interest. If you already know of the work we do, then thank you for your support. Let me just set the tone for those of you that are new to us here. We have spent 19 years developing our business here in Margate through the toughest of years. By 2013 we had reached readiness to move forwards with our vision and aims, so we created our Community Interest Company to establish long term community-led events for Thanet. Our signature event is Margate Soul Festival, but it’s one of many. We see Olby’s as an important part of the regeneration and development plans for Margate through the continued improvement of our festivals, our events programme, live music provision and the creation of combined community and educational creative arts activities. Our aim is to showcase Margate’s forward thinking attitude by creating town-owned, sustainable, celebratory events, as well as providing training and development opportunities that have real outcomes with tangible results. We are now in an exciting new phase of growth here and with the support of Arts Council England, we have improved our building’s accessibility and installed stateof-the-art video and audio recording facilities to support the development of our young people in a grassroots programme. Take a look inside to read more about our plans and work.” Eli Thompson - owner, musician and promoter

Friday 6 March 19:00 - 23:00

Ms Maurice aka Sheila Maurice-Grey is a trumpeter, vocalist and visual artist.

This is a Social and Olby’s Creative Hub event.

She combines a melange of influences in her music with a touch of West African sonic seasoning.

Kai Hoffman is a blues, jazz and cabaret singer, songwriter, bandleader and recording artist. Kai’s international reputation is growing steadily with shows including Don’t Tell Mama and the Metropolitan Room in New York City, The Blue Note in Milan and the European Jazz Expo.

Central to her music is her visual art practice, with which she aims to question her identity, as well as what it means ‘to misrepresent vs to be misrepresented.’ Her art explores the notion of ‘blackness’ and the hyper sexualisation of the black female body throughout history since the early 1800s. She is interested in visual history and facts known about ‘Blackface Minstrelsy’ and ‘The Hottentot Venus – Sarah Bartmann.’ Jazz Refreshed DJs will be playing some dancefloor jazz to get those feet moving. £10 adv / £12.50 door + booking fee
