AN OLYMPIC EVENING Thurs., Feb. 10  6:00–8:00 pm  Indian Creek Experience the Winter Olympics from afar! Play modified Winter Olympic sports, create your own Olympic mascot craft, watch the games on the big screen and learn about Chinese culture. At 6:30 pm, the Jasmine Chinese Dance Group will perform several eye-catching dances with their signature grace and elegance. PINEWOOD BOBSLED COMPETITION Sun., Feb. 20  2:00–4:00 pm  Indian Creek Design your own pinewood bobsled, bring it in, and compete for the fastest times. There will be age group categories and prizes for the winning bobsledders. A limited supply of DIY bobsled kits available for registrants. OLYMPIC TORCH CRAFT Tues., Feb. 8  5:00–6:00 pm  Indian Creek Learn about the Olympic torch from special guest, Tracy Horn, who ran in the 2002 Winter Olympics Torch Relay and then make an Olympic torch of your own. CHILDREN’S CURLING Wed. Feb. 9  1:30–2:30 pm  Indian Creek Become an Olympic athlete by competing in a curling tournament. Learn the rules of the sport and play a tabletop version of the game. Learn the rules of the sport and play a tabletop version of the game. MINECRAFT WINTER OLYMPICS Preliminary Online Rounds: Tues., Feb. 1–Fri., Feb. 11 at 2:00 pm  Flipgrid Live Rounds: Feb. 18  4:00–5:30 pm  Indian Creek Compete in teams of 2-4 to win the gold in this international Minecraft building competition. Enter the preliminary round online via Flipgrid, February 1–February 11 at 2 pm. Winners will be announced February 11 at 3 pm. Small Business Week x

START YOUR MAKER BUSINESS

Thurs., March 17  1:00–3:00 pm  Indian Creek Calling all teen entrepreneurs! Meet us in the makerspace to create products in preparation for OPL’s Teen Makers Market during Small Business Week (May 1—May 7). Maker experts will help bring your creations to life and small business owners will teach you how to market yourself and start your small business journey. TEEN MAKERS MARKET: A REMAKE LEARNING DAYS EVENT Sat., May 7  10:00 am–1:00 pm  Indian Creek In celebration of Small Business Week (May 1—May 7) and in time for Mother's Day, the library will host a unique opportunity for teens to promote and sell their creations. Interested teens should complete an application for consideration. Applications will be reviewed and spots will be offered on a rolling basis until the event is full. Applications available in March. This program is part of Remake Learning Days Kansas City, an innovative learning festival sponsored by STEM-Connect KC. During the event, locations across the metro offer hands-on and engaging STEM programs designed for kids and families. This year’s festival is May 6– May 16. TURN YOUR HOBBY INTO A BUSINESS Tues., May 3  6:00–8:30 pm  Indian Creek Have you ever wondered if you could turn your hobby into revenue? John Addessi, Business Advisor with the Kansas Small Business Development Center at JCCC, will teach you how to do just that. Whether you're ready to make the jump or you're just entertaining the idea, this program will teach you everything you need to know to get started. Be sure to bring your questions and ideas! x

There will also be a display from The Lab that will highlight some of the unique things you can create (and then sell!) for your small business using the library's Makerspace equipment. HOW TO DO BUSINESS WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT Thurs., May 5  10:30 am–12:00 pm  Indian Creek In this presentation, you'll learn the ins and outs of doing business with the federal government, including how to get started. This program is presented by Jessica Johnson, Regional Director of the Kansas Small Business Development Center at JCCC, and Kristi Dunn, Subcenter Director of the Kansas Procurement Technical Assistance Center.


Comic Book Day FREE COMIC BOOK DAY Sat., May 7  10:00 am–5:00 pm  Both libraries Pick out a free comic book! Titles will be available for kids, teens and adults beginning at 10:00 am, while supplies last. Thanks to Elite Comics for acquiring the comic books. KIDS COMIC CLUB: TALKING COMICS Fri., May 6  4:30–5:30 pm  Indian Creek In this first session of our Kids Comic Club, we will look at some different comics and chat about them. Snack provided. The comic fun continues with our second session on May 20. Register for one or both. SECRET KANSAS CITY: ANNE KNIGGENDORF Sat., April. 23  10:00–11:30 am  Indian Creek Kansas City is known for its barbecue and jazz, but you may be surprised at some of the lesser known secrets of the greater KC area. Anne Kniggendorf, author of Secret Kansas City: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure and longtime Kansas Citian, will share some of these hidden gems and trivia tidbits she discovered while writing the book. There will be a Q&A session and book signing at the end of the event, with copies available for purchase. Attendees will have a chance to win copies of the book. xx

Anne is a staff writer and editor for the Kansas City Public Library. She’s also the author of Secret Kansas City (Reedy Press, Sept. 2020) and a Kansas City-based freelance writer who is a regular contributor to KCUR 89.3 (NPR in Kansas City), and sometimes to the Kansas City Star and The Pitch. Anne is a graduate of St. John’s College, Santa Fe, and has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing/Media Arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she serves on the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Board. She is also a graduate of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center.

THE kNEW-BORN BY POET T.L. SANDERS Tues., Jan. 18  6:00–8:00 pm  Indian Creek Poet T. L. Sanders presents his art house film The kNew-Born, a 2019 KC Fringe Festival Producer’s Pick. The kNew-Born is a prequel to kNew, Sander’s one-man poetic performance and partly-autobiographical story of a son who returns to Kansas City to mourn the death of a prodigal father he hardly knew. The kNew-Born tells the father’s story, a convict slash drug addict who craves a connection with his children and now has a chance to earn parole—that is, if he can fight against himself and become a better man than he has ever been before. Sander’s film addresses the incarceration of Black men, the costs of addiction and the heartbreak of children growing up without fathers. Sanders wrote, directed and stars in the film. A Q&A with Sanders will follow. Copies of Sander’s book, kNew: The Poetic Screenplay and sequel to kNew-Born will be available for purchase. x

Poet T.L. Sanders, AKA Àtwist – The Language Artist, is a modern-day renaissance man who lives to build minds and loves to body build. He speaks French. He plays bass. Betse Ellis, a founding member of The Wilders, Betse & Clarke, and Short Round Stringband, leads the jam session. Expect fiddles, guitars, folk, blues and bluegrass. GRAND MARQUIS Fri., Jan. 14  7:00–8:15 pm  Indian Creek Grand Marquis is a big brass powerhouse, weaving old stories in with new tales for the 21st century. American roots styles blend down by the riverside of Kansas City blues and Memphis soul to form a second line party stretching to the Big Easy. A mighty chorus of horns wail over a groove-heavy rhythm section, while big, soulful vocals highlight well-crafted original songs. x

Kansas City based Grand Marquis has played more than 2,000 shows across the U.S., and released eight full length recordings. The band has been a finalist in The Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in both performance and self-produced recording categories and has been named “Best Of" for both blues and jazz in multiple Kansas City publications. SONGWRITING WORKSHOP WITH ALYSSA MURRAY Thurs., Feb. 3  6:30–7:30 pm  Indian Creek Local musician Alyssa Murray leads a songwriting workshop where you'll learn lyric writing, song forms (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.), and how to find the balance between developing your own original ideas and learning from other creatives. xx

Alyssa is a Kansas City based singer/songwriter, keyboardist, and producer who received her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from UMKC. You can hear her music on the Eight One Sixty show on 90.9 The Bridge. In addition to performing, Alyssa is an accompanist with the Kansas City Ballet and is involved with its community program Reach Out And Dance. PATTY & CRAIG Tues., Feb. 22  6:30–8:00 pm  Indian Creek Patty Stevenson and Craig Siemsen are known for their classic folk voices, gorgeous harmonies, playful stage humor, and jewel-like original songs. xx

Patty and Craig were individually ‘out there’ enjoying their music, when, in the mid-1980s, they met while performing at a folk music festival. For many years, the couple maintained solo careers, even after they married. Eventually, with the prodding of wise friends, they agreed to perform one show as a duo. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, they continue to create and record original songs as well as their own variations on timeless pieces that often span the ages of creativity in sound.

JOHN BATDORF Tues., May 10  7:00–8:15 pm  Indian Creek John Batdorf is a singer-songwriter solo artist and one half of Las Vegas Rock and Roll Hall Of Famers folk-rock duo Batdorf & Rodney. He’s also a successful film and TV composer, session vocalist, and inspirational musician in the substance recovery community. x

In his five-decade career, he’s worked with icons such as Ahmet Ertegun, David Geffen, Clive Davis, Roger Birnbaum, Adele, James Horner, Jimmie Haskell, Bill Conti, Bob Ezrin, Tom Werman, Bill Halverson, America, Rod Stewart, Dave Mason, Donna Summer, Dwight Yoakum, David Lee Roth, and Motley Crüe, plus many others. In the realm of film and TV incidental music, he’s lent his voice and compositional skills to beloved shows such as Tom and Jerry Kids, Garfield and Friends, Touched By An Angel, Promised Land, and Doctor, Doctor. Most recently “Wham Bam,” a hit by John’s band Silver in 1976 is now part of the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy ll. With legendary Utah-based singer, composer, and filmmaker, Michael McLean under Batdorf & McLean, he’s launched a unique substance abuse survival platform, and released the CD Soundtrax2Recovery. Batdorf has also released new music collaboratively with his old partner Mark Rodney and James Lee Stanley. Since 2004, he’s released nine solo albums on his own imprint, Batmac Music. Since 2017, John has released three new CDs including, Me and My Guitar, a 17-song rearranged and unplugged collection of songs John has recorded in his 47-year career, Last Summer and An Extraordinary Ordinary Life, which were both written, recorded and released during the pandemic.

CLAY CREATION WITH THE OOGLY LADY Wed., March 2  4:30–5:30 pm  Indian Creek Myrna Minnis, more commonly known as the “Oogly Lady,” will teach you how to create a whimsical clay character called an Oogly. Learn how to distribute non-titled heirlooms without starting a family feud. FINDING PEACE IN TIMES OF STRESS Tues., May 17  6:00–7:00 pm  Indian Creek As humans, we are going to experience stressful times. Are you prepared to navigate through them in healthy ways? This session will talk about self-care, coping, and resilience, and will walk you through ways to implement various strategies into your daily life. This session will be presented by Katherine Melton, MPH, MCHES, Community Prevention Coordinator of the Johnson County Mental Health Center as part of Mental Health Awareness Month.
