Birth to Pre-K x PRESCHOOL ASTRONAUT TRAINING Would you like to be an astronaut? Come to our preschool astronaut training room and practice at fun stations where you’ll do activities that an astronaut might have to do. Have some out-of-this-world fun building rockets, counting down to lift-off, seeing if you can work in confined spaces or make repairs while wearing gloves. For 5-year-olds and under + caregiver.

PAPER PLATE FLYING SAUCERS PRESCHOOL CRAFT Swing into the library and craft a flying saucer complete with an alien inside. Preschoolers may need adult help in completing this craft. For 5-year-olds and under + caregiver.
6 BY 6 EARLY LITERACY SKILLS FOR R CAREGIVERS Susan Smith, Early Literacy Librarian, will provide information for parents, caregivers and childcare providers on the importance of intentional language activities for young children. Learn how 6 by 6 skills prepare children to be successful readers when the formal reading process starts in elementary school. Duration: 1 hr. This class is approved by the Kansas Dept. of Health & Environment for one-clock hour of in-service training for childcare providers. For adults only.

Babysitting SAFE SITTER® ESSENTIALS BABYSITTING & CPR CLASSES R Ready to take on the responsibility of babysitting? The best sitter is a Safe Sitter®! Take this fun class where you’ll learn how to handle emergencies when caring for young children. This class will discuss information on how to set up a babysitting business, what to do with behavioral issues, how to be a successful babysitter and child care essentials. You will also receive a certificate of completion and a manual. Class will cover choking infant/child rescue and infant/child CPR. A graduation ceremony will be held at 4:30 pm and parents are invited to attend. Duration: 7 hours. Courses are FREE for Olathe residents or students that live in the Olathe School District; $20 for those residing outside of Olathe/the Olathe School District. TEEN AMBASSADORS Ambassadors work side-by-side with library staff, attend community events, help plan teen programs and network and collaborate with students, community leaders and organizations to spread the word about the library and teen services. Ambassadors meet once a month and as needed for events. Please fill out the teen volunteer application if you have not already done so at olathelibrary.org/teenvolunteer. Duration: 2 hrs. each meeting.
Sign up to become a Teen Summer Volunteer and make a difference in the lives of others. Help with the Meet & Eat Lunch Program, get your hands dirty in the garden to help feed the needy, work the Teen Summer Reading Desk or assist with gaming and technology programs. You’ll learn how the library operates, meet new people, earn service hours and gain valuable experience. Open to teens entering 6-12th grade in the fall.

SELF-REFLECTION WRITING WORKSHOP R An autoethnography is a type of biography that examines how identity and personal experiences shape self. In this four-part workshop you'll draft your own autoethnography in the form of an essay or poem. We’ll further explore identity and self-acceptance through discussions and recommended readings. This coming-of-age film follows teenager Cameron Post after she gets caught in the backseat of a car with the prom queen and sent away to a treatment center in a remote area called “God's Promise.” While she is being subjected to conversion therapies, she bonds with some fellow residents as they pretend to go along with the process while waiting to be released.
