Rashid Kapadia (Aravalli 1977), is an ex-mariner and a story of metamorphosis. While he started his profession as a marine engineer, today he has metamorphosed into an evangelist for eloquence, public speaking and storytelling. On the way he educated himself both in India and the USA gathering multiple degrees and certifications including being a Distinguished Toastmaster, and a Project Management Professional.

In 2015 he was also an author. He published a book called Necessary Bridges: Public Speaking & Storytelling for Project Managers and Engineers.

In-between his engagements, he’s committed to reading 50 non-fiction books a year—can one believe that—and he’s also a Vipassana mediator. Giving you Rashid Kapadia, someone we can all look up to. Well done Rashid!

Dr. Farad Kapadia (Aravalli 1977), specialized in Medicine in the UK and returned to India with expertise in Intensive Care Medicine / Critical Care Medicine. In the decades that followed Farhad has played a pioneering and leadership role in establishing Intensive / Critical Care Medicine across India.

Two of his accomplishments are: In 1991. First Place. Diploma of Intensive Care Medicine. Entire European Union.

Co-founder and Past President of Indian Society Of Critical Care Medicine. The society now has 15,000 members.

In his introduction, Rashid had this to say: On a personal note, after reading Farhad’s book, I had these two thoughts: He’s evolved to become Sherlock Holmes, and I feel like Dr. John Watson.

Clearly his world view is way more scientific and accurate than mine.

Second thought. Here is a superb example of: Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit.

MAJ. GEN. Vikram Singh (Sumeru 1982), was commissioned to his father’s battalion the 17 Granedias now designated 2nd Battalion of the Guards.

General Vikram Singh belongs to one of the most illustrious military families in India. His great grandfather fought in the First World War. His grandfather fought in the Second World War. His father fought in the 1971 India-Pakistan War. In what may be the only instance of its kind all three were taken prisoners by the enemy. His father Brigadier Amir Singhji was the only surviving commander after the epic and bloody battle fought against Pakistan in the 1971 war. He was a prisoner of the Pakistan Army for one whole year before being repatriated.

And he was awarded the Vir Chakra—one of India’s highest gallantry awards.

Today General Vikram Singh and younger brother General Vijay Singh Sumeru 1983 carry on this fine family tradition. Both have commanded two of India’s finest frontline divisions: the 15th Infantry Division and the 33 Armored Divisions.

General Vikram and his family have earned the deep gratitude of our nation and truly reflect our Never Give In spirit.

LT. COL. (Retd) Vicky Gill (Sumeru 1984), is an Infantryman from the 73rd course of the prestigious National Defense Academy. He was commissioned in the famous second battalion of the guards in December 1988. During the 20 years of service to the nation and before he took premature retirement in 2009, he served on the Siachen Glacier as a volunteer.

He commanded the Bana post which is the world’s highest military post that is manned throughout the year. He has served in counter insurgency operations in 1993 in the famous Pulwama we all know so well about for which he has been decorated. Colonel Gill is currently settled in Kutch in Gujarat and having known Major General Singh in school as senior, was the right person to be in conversation with the General.

Prof. Adrian Kennedy (Aravalli 1965), has a unique Never Give In story. His extremely impressive bio and career has been posted on Social Media.

Over many decades, he’s won multiple academic and sports awards. A few highlights of his life and career are—President of India Gold Medal Best School Student; Governor of West Bengal Medal Best University Student; PhD. holistic practitioner; Harvard Medical School; Faculty Lifestyle Medicine; National and Asian Champion 100m & 200m and Multiple sports national and international participation, including leading a team that swam the English Channel!

Dr. Murad Lala (Aravalli 1981), claims to be an ordinary person with extraordinary dreams. But what we noticed most about Murad is that he makes his dreams come true. He lives his dreams. You could travel back to when Murad was in school, he was an avid participant in the NCC. He went on to get the Prime Minister’s gold medal in the Airwing and represented India in the NCC Jamboree in Singapore. Of course his interest in flying started there and he went on as only Murad can to get his private pilot’s license and since that was not exciting enough, he took to skydiving and other such aerial acrobats. Now from around 2007 to 2009 he was introduced to the Himalayas perhaps for the first time. But he did this in a motor car and he did the Himalayan Rally for about three years and ended up being amongst the awardees. Now he probably didn’t find driving a car fatiguing enough and therefore Murad went on to cycle 1400 kilometers across Iceland. The pinnacle of his achievements an apt word to use was the 19th of May 2019 when Murad summited the Mt. Everest. When we asked Murad why he did these things, why don’t you simply walk the paved road like the rest of us. He said ”neither flowers nor people flourish and blossom on a paved road.” There you have it. A 20 years practicing surgeon in Oncology.

We have asked Murad to kindly take us up to Everest. By achieving the feat, he is now part of ‘league of extraordinary gentlemen’ that has succeeded in conquering the world’s highest peak!

He’s been a leader and trailblazer in the world of wellness, where he started pioneering work with Harvard University. Today he’s known globally as a Distinguished Health Researcher, a Corporate Wellness Leader, and an Ambassador of Lifestyle Medicine. In 2017 he was named a Top 100 Global Healthcare Leader.

A graduate of St. Stephen’s College and The Wharton School, he has co-founded and run media businesses, and has been a guest columnist and author. He subsequently spent eight years at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) where he was a core member of the strategy and healthcare practice areas, and has experience with health plans, biotech & pharma companies, med devices, and health care services. He has helped clients to innovate, execute solutions, develop strategy, make critical business decisions, and plan & enable executive level & organization wide change.

Currently he is a Managing Partner at Recon Strategy, a boutique consulting firm that he founded in 2010.

He works with executives and boards on strategy at the portfolio and business-unit levels for clients across healthcare including leading payers, large provider systems, and global bio-pharma companies. Beyond its corporate clients,

Dr. Dinesh Arab (Sumeru 1989), is a renowned Interventional Cardiologist and a Physician leader. He is a widely published researcher, authour of many articles and publications and and award winning professor, and if that wasn’t enough he has somehow found time to compete in triathlons. On this OL Nation session Dinesh spoke to us about matters of the heart and covered the topic about our cardiovascular anatomy describing what happens in heart attacks and strokes and introduced us to some cutting-edge technologies and treatments, and gave us his own personal take on staying fit.

He covered a lot of theory in this rapid fire session. The one thing we all have in common besides our “Never Give In” spirit is that we all have a heart literally if not figuratively and when that trigger stops ticking before its time it can be tragic. What Dinesh hds to share will change how we live our life, change what we can do to help others around us and could save lives.

Nikhil was recently selected by TiE Boston to receive the 2020 President’s Choice Award for his work in the fight against the pandemic. As a result of his HBR article, co-written with Dr. Atul Gawande, the Assurance Testing Alliance was formed. With his continued involvement, the COVID testing platform set up by CIC-Health, is based on the blueprint outlined in the article and has resulted in hundreds of thousands of tests done across multiple states and hundreds of organizations.

Sudhir Rao, (Vindhya 1976) has worked for over three decades for General Motors, Renault, and the Volkswagen Group. As the former Chairman and Managing Director of Skoda Auto India, Sudhir is known as the Car Guy

Kanika Tekriwal (Aravalli 2005) is the CEO and Founder of JetSetGo—she manages and operates India’s largest private jet and helicopter fleet.

Kanika became an entrepreneur at the incredibly young age of 17, hustling between college and a full time job in Mumbai after completing her +2 in Bhopal. She started JetSetGo almost a decade ago following her MBA at Coventry, and is redefining what it means to fly “private”. Thanks to pioneering ideas and focused execution, JetSetGo has profitably achieved a turnover of over Rs 150 crores—a remarkable feat for a relatively young start-up.

Her Vision and Execution have earned Kanika several laurels: Govt of India’s National Entrepreneurship Award Forbes’ 30 Under 30 BBC’s 100 Most Inspirational Women World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leader…… ……..and CNN’s 20 Under 40.

On a different note, and connecting back to our earlier theme of health and last edition’s Everest climb, she has displayed the true spirit of “Never Give In” by battling through cancer at an important stage of her life and never losing sight of her dreams. Kanika, told us her story of True Grit.

He then pursued to support green mobility solutions as the Managing Director of Bombardier Transportation India. He enjoys building competitive enterprises through strong teams and mentoring young talent. He is grateful to Lovedale for giving him a strong foundation and a value system on which he falls back today.

India’s Right to Information (RTI) Act is considered one of the most advanced and powerful legislations in the world. A critical and powerful tool in a democracy, RTI is singularly responsible for empowering millions of Indians. It makes governments accountable and tries to ensure an environment of transparency.

Anuli Kataka, (Deodar 1990) works as Deputy Editor at Frontline magazine in Mumbai. As a journalist for almost 23 years, she covers national news for the western region.

Being part of the news bureau, Anuli reports on current affairs, which includes politics, calamities, communal tension, terror and economic crime.

Her interests and the news she mostly covers are those around labor, woman’s issues, marginalized communities, urban development and the urban poor.

Anuli writes under her official name: Anupama Katakam. She lives in Mumbai with her husband and two children.

Nikhil Dey (Sumeru 1980), is a social activist based in Rajasthan. In 1990, he along with Aruna Roy and Shankar Singh founded the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangatan based out of a village in Rajasamand, District near Udaipur, where he presently lives. Nikhil has been centrally involved in large state wide campaigns on education, labour, and human rights. His experience with core issues for the poor such as minimum wage, food rights, land, education naturally gives him an in-depth perspective on what a large portion of marginalised and vulnerable people in our country have to live with. He spoke on OL Nation about his journey, issues of transparency and accountability, and how all of us can exercise citizenship in our Democracy for ourselves, and for others less privileged than we are. He talk engaged us on some topical and very relevant issues.

We don’t accomplish anything in this life alone...the whole tapestry of one’s life are the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something of meaning.

Saaz Agarwal (Pankaj 1977) is a contemporary Indian writer whose body of work includes biographies, translations, critical reviews and humour columns. As an artist, she is recognized for her Bombay Clichés, quirky depictions of urban India in a traditional Indian folk style.

Some of her books are essential reference books in the libraries of various Indian Institutes of Management, she has held four exhibitions of her own painting, headed the HR /admin function of a flourishing software startup & raised three children, one as mother and two as step mother!!! Some of her best known books deal with a people who were affected by what happened in August 1947 in ways that most of us weren’t…The Sindhis.

When we were younger there was a generation of people who were adults when they moved from Pakistan to India…. for them August wasn’t the month of Independence, but the anniversary of partition. (A traumatic time, and perhaps worse for the Sindhis than the Punjabis for they lost a geographical home land).

But they’ve gone on to become amongst the most successful business communities in the country…Did the trauma of partition harden their resolve to succeed wherever they were, and what did they gain and what did they lose on the way?

Senthil Chengalvarayan (Aravalli 1981), in his aweinspiring career, has served as the Editor-in-Chief of network 18’s business newsroom. In this role, Senthil headed a host of verticals that were integral to the groups business media ecosystem (they included CNBC TV18, CNBC Awaaz, and Forbes India.)

Prior to this, Senthil was the Managing Editor of CNBC TV18. A service he helped start as its editor in 1999.

As a pioneer of business television in India he led a team of journalists that made CNBC TV18 the most successful media network in the country.

Senthil stepped away from active journalism in 2015, but. continues to be an invited speaker for several industry seminars. He was voted as one of India’s top 5 English news anchors by the Hindustan Times C-Fore Survey in 2007. It was the first Business Anchor to be included in that list. He is also a recipient of the Young Achiever Award from the Indo-US Business Council.

A graduate in economics from Madras University, he has done his master’s in journalism from the Times Research Foundation Institute’s School of Social Journalism in New Delhi.

YouTube Facebook Palliative care is an interdisciplinary medical caregiving approach aimed at optimizing quality of life and mitigating suffering among people with serious, complex illness.

Dr Jeremy Johnson (Kailash 1957) is currently working as an Emeritus consultant in Palliative Medicine is the Director of Education and Research at Karunashraya, a 75 - bedded Hospice in Bangalore. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Radiologists and he has served as a Board member for the Royal Society of Medicine (in Palliative Care) and the International Fellowship of Rotarian Doctors. Jeremy has previously served as the Medical Director at Severn Hospice based in Shrewsbury, UK, and Alpha Palliative Care in Kerala, India.

Besides his focus on clinical work, he has set up collaborative services for patients with progressive neurological conditions and those with end stage kidney disease. Originally trained as a Radiation Oncologist his professional focus has been on pain and symptom management, end of life care, service development and education. He is a well-respected author of several articles published in books and journals and has made presentations at many international conferences.

Smriti Rana (Vindhya 1998) is trained in Integrative and Holistic Psychological Counselling. She began her work in palliative care after losing several family members in one year to protracted illnesses marked by the conspicuous absence of pain relief.

As Director-Programs at Pallium India, a national registered charitable Trust formed in 2003 that strives to alleviate health-related suffering. Smriti heads programs ranging from National outreach, development and integration of curricula, caregiver advocacy, gender-equity, paediatric palliative care, advance care planning, humane end of life care and palliative care in humanitarian settings.

The Trust demonstrates, educates, and advocates for the integration of palliative care into mainstream healthcare and has a footprint in 18 states and 3 Union Territories in India. Through the Trivandrum Institute of Palliative Sciences (Pallium India’s flagship program), a WHO Collaborating Centre for Training and Policy on Access to Pain Relief, Smriti works closely with the WHO SEARO to scale up palliative care services in the region. She is currently engaged with Timor Leste’s Ministry of Health to facilitate balanced access to controlled medicines for that country.

Smriti has been guest faculty for three consecutive years at Dartmouth University’s Health Care Foundations sessions on Global Perspectives, with topics centered around palliative care, humanizing pharmaceutical practices in developing countries and innovative responses in healthcare during the pandemic.

He is on the editorial board for the Indian Journal of Palliative Care and the International Journal of Palliative Care: Research and Treatment. He is also a member of the Association for Palliative Medicine in Great Britain & Ireland, the European Association of Palliative Care, the Indian Association of Palliative Care, the International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care. Jeremy has been recognized and honored with an MBE award by the Queen of England for his meritorious services to Palliative Medicine.

Hy Lights and Quick Flashes Ever since 1971 Hy has been photographing the club Crystal Palace—in action and behind the scenes.

Hy Money (Willingdon 1950), has been acknowledged as Britain’s first female sports photographer. When Hy was 19 years old, she arrived at Tilbury Docks from Bombay, with fifteen pounds in her pocket and a Box Brownie camera given to her by her mother, with a request to send her a picture of Buckingham Palace, once she had settled in her new life. Having married at twenty-two Hy spent her early years taking photos of her young family, but her enthusiasm for photography soon became a passion. She sent one of her pictures to a Sunday National Newspaper and not only was it published, but it was given a By-line, at her first attempt.

A trip to Crystal Palace Football Club as a birthday treat for her eight-year-old son, spurred her to take action photos. At a time when women were not allowed on to the pitch to take pictures. But after a two-year struggle, she was accepted by the NUJ and soon became a familiar sight on the touch lines at the then First Division football matches all over London. Her book “Hy on Palace” is now considered “the go to bible” for the football club and their fans!

Her photos are regularly seen in books, magazines and on sports pages. Her first pass took her to other events, such as the Theatre, Politics, Sports, Corporate Functions and even to Royal occasions. She has been able to capture images of sporting legends such as Muhammad Ali, Bobby Moore, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and also stars of the screen and members of the royal family.

K. C. Mandappa (Vindhya 2002) is a prolific and versatile photographer with over 12 years of experience. While he has a background in advertising, his photography focuses on travel, social and environmental documentary.

He has worked with a multitude of brands including Amazon but his best credential would perhaps be finishing as a Finalist on Mission Cover Shot, a reality show for photographers on the National Geographic Channel. His work has also been seen in BBC Worldwide, NatGeo Traveller and Saevus Magazine.

Combining his writing experience along with his photography skill, it has led Mandappa to create several films. These include corporate and digital films and 5 documentaries that have aired on the National Geographic Channel. His creativity and pursuit of work in the social and environmental space has helped steer focus on using photography for good, for the betterment of the environment and the world.

She took more than 10,000 photos of Crystal Palace which resulted in her putting together a book in 2005 called HY ON PALACE. Danny Kelly on his London Sports Radio show called it the best, most intimate photographic history of a football club he’s ever seen.

Get this woman out of here, its now become a farce, but just to shut her up for good, give her a touchline pass.”

T’was for her young sons birthday I believe his age was eight, he asked to go to Palace she thought he meant the Palace Gate.

Away fans though made curses threw staples and gave threats, but Hy’s camera it stayed focused from her place beside the nets

Those were the words of old Bert Head the boss of Crystal Palace, who despite his weary tone of voice didn’t hold no malice

But when he told her Selhurst Park she reluctantly went along, where she got hooked on the atmosphere, the chanting and the song

She snapped Fiona Richmond** in that famous bathtub pic and when she stood her ground with Clough his wounds he had to lick.

So Hy Money got her press card and a spot behind the goal, photographed the action and let her camera roll.

HY begged to get a press pass, to take photos of the games, but as one hack said sarcastically “we don’t give them out to Dames.”

The night of tears in Cardiff,**** City players thought they’d have a laugh, and they threw HY and her camera into the players bath.

Born in colonial India in a place called Bangalore Hy knew at an early age she’d have to leave her native shore

So she pestered poor Bert Head and refused to go away, and once HY had the press card, she joined the NUJ*

Despite being soaked and angry, she didn’t say a word, the pain was watching Palace, go down to the Third.

With fifteen quid, a suitcase and a little camera box, she came ashore in England at London’s Tilbury Docks.

Now she was a member of the macho papparazzi and she became known at Selhurst Park as the Palace Mammarazzi.

Her celebrity it grew greater, with famed sports stars she was pally, she snapped great shots of Barry Sheen and the great Muhamed Ali

She got a job in Croydon processing photo shots, married very early and soon had children in their cots.

She was ignored by fellow members all of whom were males, but Hy Money wasn’t bothered she was as tough as nails..

She started shooting movie stars and all the cast of ‘Dallas’ and she’ll ever more be known as ‘First Lady of the Palace.’

She started taking photos, family snaps and fashion, and soon for her, photography became an all consuming passion

She made a glamorous figure in her leather red and blue, and she soon became a favourite of the Crystal Palace crew.

She still goes up the Palace now, and the crowd give her a cheer, grand children they come with her the great lady pioneer.

M.A. Alagapan (Sumeru 1959) is a high achiever and entrepreneur. He has a bachelor’s degree from Vivekananda college, Chennai; and a management diploma from Aston University, UK. He started his professional journey in 1965 as a management trainee in the UK. He has served with the Murugappa Group. And he and started Chola Finance; and Cholamandalam General Insurance Company where he collaborated with Mitsui Sumitomo Japan. He served as the COO of the Group, went on to be the Chairman, having doubled its turnover to US$ 1.6 billion.

He has served many charitable trusts associated with schools, polytechnic colleges, and hospitals, including serving as the Chairman of United Way, Chennai. He has been Chairman of the Planters’ Association of Tamil Nadu and President of UPASI. He is also on the board of the governing body of the Cancer Institute of Chennai.

Capt. Arjun Nair (Sumeru 1975), who for over 45 years, has had a wide-ranging career, with an extraordinary range of experiences and interests. For 18 years he was a merchant navy mariner and Captain.

Samir Sood (Aravalli 1987) is the founder of Venture Highway. In addition, Samir has helped grow and diversify India Forge, a family run auto parts manufacturing business. Prior to this, Samir was the Head of South Asia, Australia - M&A and Investments for Google Inc., and in that capacity, he has led Google’s investments in several first time seed stage funds in India: Erasmic Venture Fund (Accel India), SONG (Soros, Omydiar, Google Fund), Seedfund, and Ventureast TeNet Fund II. Additionally, Samir was part of the team that coordinated the $750 million acquisition of AdMob. Earlier Samir was part of the Corporate Business Development team at Cisco Systems, Inc. where he led wireless acquisitions and investments, which included the $450 million acquisition of Airspace.

Samir executed the first venture investment in India (India Games) for Cisco Systems, Inc. among many other acquisitions and investments. Samir has a MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University, and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Interestingly, he has an OL partner. And, Alchi Kitchen, a well-known restaurant in Leh—which was started by a young Ladakhi lady—is just one success story.

He is currently Mentor and Managing Director at Seasky Shipping & Consulting. He is also a mentor to industry leaders including a managing director and a director. His non-professional activities and hobbies include being a consumer activist, golfing, being a wine, malt connoisseur, and being the grandfather of a 7-year old granddaughter.

Abhishek Mohan (Vindhya 1999) has been part of sunrise industries his whole career. Over the last 15 years he has been part of the online games, data security, venture builder and fintech space and seen ventures go from seed to public listing across south east Asia and Japan.

He is currently focused on his venture Hempstreet, which is India’s first research to retail venture in the medical cannabis space. He also wears a second hat as the cofounder of technology 9 labs, that was the first startup studio in India that over the last 5 years has helped and is helping 37 entrepreneurs build or scale their dream companies.

Dr. Sujatha Ramesh (Champak 1975), is a pediatric allergy and immunology consultant. After being awarded the President’s Medal from our school, she graduated from Stanley Medical College and completed Residency and Fellowship at State University of New York at Buffalo. She has served as an Associate Professor at SUNY Buffalo, and is a consultant at Columbia Asia Hospital in Bangalore.

Sujatha specializes in pediatric allergic disorders such as asthma, food allergy, and many other allergic disorders. She has presented over a hundred invited lectures and has several publications in peer reviewed international journals. Her research interests include the prevention and management of asthma, food allergy, and the impact of urbanization and lifestyle changes. Her other area of interest is the evaluation of recurrent infections and primary immune deficiency diseases. Sujatha is a Fellow of both the American Academy and American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology.

Along with being a Diplomate of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, and the American Board of Pediatrics. She has received many awards and grants including a Fulbright Scholarship and research grants from the Centers for Disease Control.

Rosa Varghese née George, (Deodar 1989) is an art enthusiast. She is the daughter of Mrs. Thresamma George, batch of ‘59, a trained Bharatnathyam dancer herself. Having started learning Mohiniyattam at Lovedale from Mrs.Nirmala Panicker, she continues to learn under, and work with Guru Sreedevi Rajan, Smt. Sandhya Rajan and Smt. Smitha Rajan, daughter and granddaughters of the late Padma Shree Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair andGuru Kalamandalam Kalyanikuttiamma. She is also closely associated with the Kalyana Krishna Foundation, a non-profit organisation that works towards “upholding the heritage values and cultural integrity of our society”.

Furthermore she has been learning Kalaripayattu for the last 12 years under Sivan Gurukal of Sri Agasthya Kalari. Having completed a diploma in Kalaripayattu, she is also one of only four women coaches certified by the Sports Kalaripayattu Association.

Mira Balchandran Gokul (Deodar 1980), is a Bharatanatyam practitioner with 30 years of performing and teaching experience. She was introduced into the world of dance and theatre through Kathakali with Sadanam Kirshnankutty at the age of 6. This laid the foundation for her ongoing fascination with the arts.

Mira continued this journey through her school years at Lovedale with Nirmala Panikar and Sadanam Nandakumar. Later she did her full-time training at the Kalakashetra College of Fine Arts in Chennai.

Mira has worked with pioneering tutors and choreographers in India and England. She Co founded Sankalpam dance company in 1994 and performed and toured extensively. In addition Mira has undertaken a wide range of projects and was the Youth Dance Development Officer for the Merseyside County, Regional Coordinator for the North West region for the London Olympics 2012 dance programme that brought together 1056 participants, Judge and Mentor for BBC Young Dancer and Principal Artist for the UK government’s Department of Education’s Centre for Advanced Training Scheme, that prepares gifted and talented young people for the Creative Industry. Mira believes dance has the potential to tap the hidden energy in all of us to try and work towards being our best selves and is passionate about providing access to high quality training for all. Mira resides in the UK with her husband Gokul Krishnan, who also happens to be an old Lawrencian, Aravalli house, batch of 1976 and their daughter Arya.

She has had the opportunity to work with artists and teachers committed to reviving and promoting a greater understanding of their art. Realizing the larger implications of the neglect of this art form, today she works to reinvent how art is perceived, and in making it relevant for the present day. She currently teaches Kalaripayattu while also pursuing dance.
