LEGISLATIVE WRAP-UP 2024

Every session, thousands of bills are filed and only a few hundred are signed into law. We set out at the beginning of the year pushing two major themes – improving the state’s economic development process coupled with workforce development alignment - better defined career pathways, increased access to childcare and resources to incentivize education and training for high-demand jobs. We had many accomplishments this session but there is still work to do in the years ahead.
The 2024 session had its own set of unique challenges. House and Senate majority leadership elections (Congrats to Speaker-designate Kyle Hilbert and Pro Tem-designate Greg McCortney!) occurred early in session, followed by the rollout of the Senate’s new budget transparency process, and then candidate filing for the 2024 election cycle. Each of these happenings brought with them weeks of buildup, and less than congenial interactions between the legislative and executive branches.
The state’s $12.47 billion budget was finally agreed to in the final weeks of May and has been signed by the governor. However, celebrations for the interim and prep work for the primary election have been short lived. Gov. Kevin Stitt called the Senate back into special session in early June to address a vacancy on a higher education governing board leaving the halls of the state Capitol bustling well into June.
The days are long and the months are short during the legislative session. And regardless of the bill, the topic or the time of the year, The State Chamber will continue to be the leading advocate for Oklahoma businesses.
