At King’s, our aim is to achieve outstanding levels of sustainability in all areas of the organisation. For us to achieve our ambition, we recognise the need to create a comprehensive sustainability strategy that sets specific SMART targets, establishes an effective monitoring system that reviews and evaluates these targets, taking into account a range of wider issues (including financial constraints).

We are determined to take proactive action to reduce the impact King’s has upon the environment. In order to do this, we want to ensure that a clear focus on sustainability lies at the heart of our three schools’ approach to all areas of operation and development. This document outlines how we intend to do this while ensuring all three schools work together in a collaborative way to make this ambition a reality.

To achieve our ambition, we recognise the importance of both educating and involving all key King’s stakeholders. These include our employees, pupils, parents, governors and the local community. By raising levels of sustainability literacy and awareness, we will help our stakeholders understand their individual and collective responsibilities. Armed with the increased levels of understanding, we hope all members of the King’s community will be inspired to positively engage with this strategy.

Operational Lead

The Operational Lead (OL) will be a sustainability champion; they will establish and chair a sustainability working group which has oversight of this strategy and produce a termly report for the WSSG and the Estates’ Committee in terms of progress and targets achieved.

• Ensure the site condition survey and subsequent recommendations include consideration of the audit outcomes

As with our staff, we expect our pupils to act in a way that demonstrates an understanding and respect for the environment which they are a part of. Through education and learning, we aim to inspire our pupils to be individual sustainable champions for the School where they study. We hope some may feel strongly enough to pursue careers in green technologies in the future.

The Local and International Community

Through the engagement of our Partnerships Director and other Senior Staff, we will work collaboratively with the local community and International Schools to ensure that we develop meaningful relationships and implement actions that will have a positive impact on the local environment. This includes working closely with our external contractors and our neighbours, the Dean & Chapter.

• To reduce our total carbon emissions by improving our energy efficiency and investing in renewable energy sources to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels

• Work with key support budget holders (Premises, Catering, Domestic etc) to develop a Supplier Sustainability Risk Assessment (SSRA), that identifies our top suppliers that are most likely to create a large carbon footprint. Use the RA to prioritise which suppliers to engage with first and depending on the outcome prioritise alternative providers via a tender process
