wenty-eight OU College of Dentistry students and a strong group of lead dentists volunteered to serve at the annual Jamaica mission trip. DS3 Brock Frazee says, “Our group was able to provide a lot of help, but received so much more in return.”

Thank you to all for your incredible display of compassion, humility, and service to the Jamaican community. A special shoutout to DS4 Amber Cantrell for taking on the role of Student Lead for the trip!

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL ASDA WELLNESS MONTH

J

oin ASDA in celebrating Wellness Month this September, when dental students and ASDA chapters shine a light on the importance of personal health and overall well-being.

Wellness is more than just eating right or getting regular exercise. Wellness requires a conscious, daily effort towards taking care of yourself emotionally, physically, occupationally, intellectually, and environmentally. It requires focusing on each of these dimensions and finding a balanced way of addressing all of them, as needed.

W

e know that life as a dental student doesn’t necessarily lend to a healthy lifestyle. Between the onslaught of exams, quizzes, projects, etc., it’s easy to lose sight of what’s most important: your health.

Oklahoma ASDA celebrates wellness with a variety of events throughout the year, including our GetFit Welcome Week to kickstart the Fall semester on the right foot. Check out all of the ways you can embody wellness with national and Oklahoma ASDA on the following pages.

NATIONAL ASDA CHALLENGE

You could win $100. Here’s how: Lace up your gym shoes, charge your FitBits, and band together for dental student wellness. The ASDA Step Out for Wellness Challenge will begin on Sept. 1 and continue throughout Wellness Month.

EASY AS 1, 2, 3

1. Log your steps with your FitBit, Apple Watch, pedometer, etc.

2. Submit your steps each day throughout September via: OU ASDA mobile app > click “More” > GetFit > Step Out Challenge 3. The member and the ASDA chapter with highest earned steps will win prizes!

Note: Since all step totals are self-reported, we’re relying on members to be honest.

ince 1977, Good Shepherd Ministries has provided quality medical services for those in need in the OKC community. The medical and dental clinic see countless patients every day, who lack the appropriate resources to proper health care.

RUNNING FOR THE MIND, BODY, AND SMILE We are proud to announce the arrival of the inaugural Miles for Smiles 5K, a race that aims to keep the Oklahoma City community smiling! Our event will take place on Saturday, November 11, 2017.

The race will be located on the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Campus, directly in front of the David L. Boren Student Union and Robert M. Bird Library. The race takes runners on a scenic course through the heart of the OUHSC campus. Runners will round the iconic Seed Sower statue as they finish strong. Each runner will also receive a Miles for Smiles t-shirt, as well as a goodie bag full of oral health products!

The Miles for Smiles 5K Committee spent a considerable amount of time discussing race beneficiaries. We wanted an organization or charity that represented and cared passionately for the OKC community. This organization should be one that without its contributions, many people would lack valuable resources and access to proper healthcare and assistance. We are incredibly excited to partner with Good Shepherd Ministries to make a lasting difference for the community.

Casino Royale 2017

G

dresses and suits ready welcome you to the of Oklahoma ASDA’s night: Casino Royale!

The event starts at 7 PM and will continue until midnight on Friday, September 22nd, 2017 at the Embassy Suites in Downtown Oklahoma City. Students, faculty, and staff are all welcome and are encouraged to bring a guest with them!

Eat, drink, dance, and play casino games to your heart’s content! Casino games are covered by ASDA and are free for all attendees. We invite you to play anything from blackjack to roulette for prizes that will be raffled at the end of the evening. Enjoy complimentary heavy hor d’oeuvres (hot and cold) and a cash bar.

Tickets shall go on sale in the Commons at lunch beginning Wednesday, August 30th, 2017. Tickets will be $20 for ASDA members and $25 for non-ASDA members until September 8th. Following this date, there will be a $5 price increase. Tickets will be available at the door for $30 and $35, respectively.

After taking NBDE II, taking part in a bachelorette party in San Antonio (that’s right...”ette”), submitting residency applications, and interviewing for a job in Chicago, he’s back to take on the Fall semester with a vengeance.

SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS, RECOGNITION, AND PRIZES T his year, Oklahoma ASDA wants to increase value for our hard-working members.

We will recognize students who demonstrate exceptional growth by serving our chapter and participating in our events/campaigns. Learn more about what ASDA offers for you from what you can offer for ASDA:

A High Noble Medal is the highest honor one can receive from our chapter. This award recognizes the dental student(s) who has/have made significant contributions to our chapter.

The individual(s) who receive this award will attend our end-of-the-year High Noble Medals awards ceremony to accept his/her prize.

The Golden Glove Award is a monthly contest allowing students to showcase their proudest work from pre-clinic and clinic. Students may submit multiple photos of projects for a chance to win each month.
