Head Start programs promote the school readiness of infants, toddlers, and
children
with low income. Services are provided in a variety of settings and strive to enhance children’s cognitive, socialemotional, and physical development as well as language/literacy, math and social skills that prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. Head Start programs also engage parents or other key family members in positive relationships, with a focus on family well being. Families who are experiencing homelessness, children who are in foster care, families who are receiving SSI, TANF, or SNAP benefits are also eligible to apply for Head Start services Programs must serve at last 10% of their enrollment with children who have a disability and no more than 10% of their enrollment can be families whose income exceeds the eligibility criteria.
