WhyNot?

On June 2nd, 2023, the last day of Girls State, delegates had the opportunity to hear from Representative Stephanie Bice.

Congresswoman Bice flew back from Washington D.C. the night before just so she could speak to us. She spoke on taking risks and just asking yourself, “Why Not?” In our world it is important to pursue things you are passionate about, and even things you may not know much about.

Congresswoman Bice gave encouragement on using every opportunity as one to learn and think on your feet. Stay engaged, no matter where your path takes you.

TheSenate

“Politics is like Junior High drama, the only difference is the gavel.” These were the words spoken by Leslie Blair who mentored the Senate members on Thursday and Friday. In our meetings we dealt with a plethora of topics ranging from sex education to concert tickets. From the start, members of The Senate did not shy away from asking questions, making amendments, or debating proposals. One question that was asked of Blair was, “Do you actually get anything done?” A big thing to keep in mind when thinking of Congress is that there are lots of people and lots of opinions. There were 16 voices in the Senate this week and 43 in the House of Representatives. With that many people it can take a long time to come up with a solution that is beneficial for both the people and the state. So yes, it may take longer than you would expect, but we do get things done. This experience was especially influential when seeing the votes. No one discriminated or had an afterward hatred if someone voted differently from them. I think that is important to remember, we are all entitled to our opinions.
