Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report

L

ake Okeechobee is nearing the 15.5 foot level, which is more water than we have seen in quite a few years. Although the water is up the bass seem to be staying in relatively the same areas as before the rise. A spinner bait is still working in the very early morning hours for us. Some days the color does not seem to matter. At other times a gold or copper blade will outperform a silver blade and vice versa. The go-to baits once the bass quit eating the spinner bait are numerous. Soft plastics as a worm, jerk bait or a senko will draw strikes in the cover. A creature-style bait or a jig will most often account for the larger bass for those using a flipping or pitching presentation.

There are bass to be caught in all areas of the lake. Once the water level stabilizes the bass will find their way into the marshy areas behind the outer grass lines. It looks as if we are going to have another great season of catching on Lake Okeechobee. Already large numbers of bass, as well as big bass are being taken on shiner fishing trips. As we move along into fall and the water continues to cool down the large females will move to the outside edges and start feeding heavily, gaining weight to get them through the spawn. Okeechobee bass population is huge at this time. Please respect the fishery by releasing your catch in good health.
