Troika is synonymous with corporate success and the design and development of sustainable communities. BUT, WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE OKANAGAN WOMAN WHO FOUNDED AND LEADS TROIKA,

THE WOMAN WHO CAME TO KELOWNA IN 1997, LOVED IT AND STAYED?

Persistent passion! Renée Wasylyk is inspirational and a trend setter.

"Young women need to find their inner passion and allow it to drive them to succeed." Her recommended reading is by Brigid Schulte:

"Overwhelmed: Work, love and play when no one has the time." - Marion Stolze

Team-based, Reputable, Innovative, Bold and Excellent (TRIBE). Now in her early forties, Renée Wasylyk is welcoming and elegant, exuding warmth and confidence. Seated in her board room surrounded by trophies including the 2015 BC Influential Women in Business Award and Entrepreneur of the Year Award, we enjoyed a relaxed chat about life, love, relationships, raising kids, spirituality, finding one's inner passion to succeed … and making cupcakes at 3 am for a school! Renée found her passion at a young age. With vision and a plan, she entered the male dominated industry of property development. Back then, being a woman, she was once asked to find a co-signer for a loan and although “Women have made progress, we must change the social norms." Women executives still do 80% of housework and

child-rearing. So, why do women side-step themselves? There is incongruence between ambition and their choices.

All employees benefit from options like flexible work hours and the ability to take parental leave. Renée is convinced that relationship building is a major key to success.

Renée encourages young women she mentors to go beyond where they are at, to find and use their inner passion. "And overlook your gender! In the board room, I forget I have boobs; I am there because I have brains and I earned my seat at the table. Sometimes, I do look through a different lens and think how a decision might affect my relationships. Sometimes this makes the men uncomfortable. My decisions are based on my values." Renée wants an egalitarian society in which being partners at home means an equal sharing of household and family responsibilities. In practice, she supports true equality at work and has instilled corporate values:

Renée plans to incorporate her values into her new political career as she has decided to run for the Conservative Nomination for MP in the Kelowna - Lake Country riding.

8 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

She looks forward to the day when women are not asked what they sacrificed to succeed. To her, it is a privilege to care for her family while also managing her company. "Luckily, I need quality sleep not quantity!" She could work at home after her kids went to sleep and still be raring to go in the morning. The daughter of a Baptist Minister, she is spiritual. Meditation refreshes her whether it be through conversation, reflection, reading, or at a sculpting seminar in Mexico.

She advocates holistic coaching and believes that in the end

"Love Wins" (Rob Bell)

Three years ago, she and partner Carlos Alentejano blended their families of four boys and a girl now ranging in age from 16 to 22. Renée and Carlos sometimes just sit back, spectate and enjoy the lively conversation and laughter. "My children have always been my number one priority." Renée has always chosen to find wonderful 'home managers', who took care of running her house. This enabled her to focus on her kids as soon as she got home. This practice continues today, though she and Carlos both like to take turns to cook dinner.

Carlos is her love and her best friend. I ask what he would tell us that nobody else knows. Renée answers: “That I am very feminine; he knows my softness and my vulnerability. He brings all that out in me while others know me in my corporate and philanthropic roles.” She wants her two boys, Damek and Mikhail, and her daughter, Zovya to be champion, cheerleader, lover and friend in their personal relationships; Champion to defend their partner Cheerleader to be encouraging on the sideline Lover to be playful, respectful and safe Friend so each is comfortable in being their true self

Renée is a successful, inspirational individual, feminine and passionate..... truly a force to be reckoned with! Teaching Excellence, Inspiring Futures, Shaping Character

But in the early days, it wasn't all sophistication! Smiling, she remembers rushing from work to a parent/teacher interview. Smartly dressed, babe in car carrier, daughter 2 in hand and kindergarten son in tow, they arrived late. When her daughter turned green – Renée, not seeing even a garbage can, grabbed her designer skirt and used it as a puke bucket!! On another occasion, writing on the white board during a presentation to twenty men, she felt her skirt slip down below her thighs. To this day, she is not sure just how much she revealed, but without missing a beat she pulled up the skirt, re-zipped and carried on! Nobody in the room said a word during or after!

FABULOUS FALL

MAKEOVER WINNER

Icing on the CAKE

When we read Linda Klym’s letter asking us to consider her for Okanagan Woman’s Fall makeover, it was clear that she was a clever and courageous woman. Only after we met in person did we see what a uniquely compelling choice she was…filled with grace in the face of adversity, compassion and a genuine warmth. Linda was custom made for this makeover and she enjoyed every minute of it. Linda moved to the North Okanagan from Alberta with her husband about four years ago, after their daughter passed away following a long battle with a brain tumor. “Although the move was very good for me, my husband of 45 years never fully recovered from losing his daughter,” she wrote. About a year ago, he lost his life in a car accident. Along with learning her way as a new widow, soon after she was diagnosed with cancer. Linda reported that everything went well with the cancer and she has learned a lot about running a household alone. She has now finished treatment and is taking advantage of all the Okanagan has go offer. “A makeover would be the icing on the cake,” Linda wrote. “A new me on the inside, a new me on the outside.”

If you must wear a bra, it should be a

heavenly fit!

BRA HEAVEN

PH: 250 545 9806 • BRAHEAVEN.CA 117-5100 ANDERSON WAY, VERNON, BC 12 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

Linda started her adventure at Bra Heaven in Vernon, her home town. Here she was measured and fitted correctly for a bra. Valerie Van Bodegom, the owner was very informative and so helpful in selecting the right bra for me, says Linda. “This was my first personal bra fitting and all my reservations were quelled by such a positive experience at Bra Heaven.” Linda was treated to an Empreinte, Melody bra, in soft caramel.

Linda’s hair was next. With over six years’ experience in cutting, styling and colouring, Jessica Langedyk at NV Studios, Kelowna, knew just how to coax the perfect style from Linda’s short hair. After a consultation with Linda over coffee, supplied by our friends at Fezziwig’s Bakery Café, Jessica administered her magic. She went to work on Linda’s locks; cutting, colouring, conditioning, spritzing and behold.. 2 hours later created a fabulous short layered classic look with a modern twist that looked so chic on Linda and will be easy for her to care for.

After a fun and hectic morning, we stopped to enjoy a wonderful light lunch catered by Fezziwigs Artisan Bakery Café. Fezziwigs features three locations in the Mission area and is a casual and fun spot for breakfast, lunch or a quick takeout for those on the run.

Okanagan Makeup Artist, Tammy Peterson said “I didn’t have to use a lot of makeup. I was after a classic but sultry look. Linda has beautiful skin. We started with ‘Drops of Youth’ which removes fine lines, a touch of aloe eye cream and moisturizer. After defining a soft powder brow, I did her eyes in neutral shades with a touch of purple at the edges. Peachy blush brings out her eyes and her lips are bold but natural in a neutral, sheer burgundy.”

For our next stop we visited Strut Footwear and Apparel store in Mission Park Shopping Centre, one of Kelowna’s premiere spots for those in search of the perfect shoe or boot for any occasion. Store proprietor Shandi Schwartz has recently enjoyed a hugely successful one-year anniversary celebration, congratulations to Shandi and her team!

Did Linda try on half of the shoes in the store, with lots of help from sales associate Brenda? Maybe. If so, it’s understandable as there were so many to enthuse over. Eventually, a versatile and stylish Hispanitas black pump was selected, perfectly complimenting her dress. But we couldn’t leave without picking up a stylish fascinator… as one never knows when one will be invited to attend that special function!

Throughout the time we spent with Linda, her favorite comment often started with “I’ve never ever….” She had no problem trying new looks and styles and she thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience. A short drive brought us to Bellissima Fashions in Orchard Park Shopping Centre where we continued Linda’s transformation. We were greeted with a big smile by Deborah Mooney, store Manager, who was most helpful as the team combed the racks for dresses, tops, pants and jackets. Selecting an armful of clothing, it was off to the changing room to fit and find that perfect outfit! “It’s completely different from anything I’ve ever bought, or even looked at before,” said Linda about the Joseph Ribkoff dress that was finally selected. The dress fit her perfectly, flattered her figure and ultimately, was an easy decision. Bellissima has been located in Orchard Park Shopping Centre for more than 15 years. It’s a busy, vibrant store where, it seemed, almost everyone left with a package. As Linda says, “I felt like Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman, trying on all these beautiful clothes!”

The final phase of Linda’s makeover was the photo shoot itself and for this, Okanagan Woman looked to Bonne Donovan of Bonne Belle Portraits for her talent and expertise to capture the perfect photos. Bonne has a thriving business specializing in boudoir photography. Although she also shoots family portraits, corporate photos and videography, her greatest love is boudoir.

In the studio, Bonne’s gentle and professional manner helped to relax Linda and bring out her stunning smile.

Thank you, Linda, for allowing us to get to know you better and the inspiration you’ve shared with our readers. -Deanna Rainey

The final photographs reflect a truly vibrant, fashionably confident woman who the camera adored. From bra fitting through hair, clothes, shoes, make up, photography and even lunch, Linda thoroughly enjoyed discovering her new glamorous image.

Before

After all, she has embraced herself internally and as she stated in her original letter to Okanagan Woman, “…I am gaining strength daily with the help of faith, family and friends, and learning to take one day at a time, being thankful for everything I have.”

Thank you to all our generous sponsors for helping to make dreams come true.

Flawsome

The adjective ‘Flawsome’ entered the realm of linguistically blended words, flaw and awesome, through text messaging, blogs and social media channels.

Its conception intended to embrace flaws, with the unapologetic acceptance of surface imperfections, odd quirks and the rough and tumble scars acquired throughout life. The concept of flawsome, however, has been around for quite some time. The French DaDa artist - Marcel Duchamp created an infamous art piece in 1923 called "The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even". The large composition was created with imagery sandwiched between two glass panels framed together like a window and stood approximately nine feet tall. Duchamp worked on the art project for over eight years. A key component in his artistic statement was that it was to remain unfinished and incomplete.

Enveloped with his insights in Buddhist philosophy, the legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen poetically captures the essence of flawesome. In his song "Anthem" Cohen ever so gently coaches us to contemplate about the self-imposed obsession of attaining perfection and society's collective quest for a Utopian world. While crooning "there is a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in" Cohen serenely delivers the lyrical and very poignant message for mankind to ponder.

Elegant Wardrobe Solutions

How much longer can mankind continue to pursue flawless physiques or perfection in our worldly possessions? The Zen philosophy known as Wabi-Sabi is a concept that focuses on appreciating the beauty within the naturally imperfect world. This ancient aesthetic deeply embraces the cycle of growth and decay while celebrating flaws, chips and cracks that evolve through the natural wear and tear of time.

• Work • Leisure • Lounge • Travel • Cruise

Loosely translated, the spirit behind "wabi" is

simplicity while capturing the serenity and mood of austere beauty.

NATURAL FIBRE FAIR TRADE

529 Bernard Ave, Kelowna Ph: 778 484 2759 www.blueskyclothingco.com

Four years later the large glass panel was accidentally dropped while being transported to an art collector. By a twist of fate the accidental shattering of the glass had added the final artistic touches in a way that Duchamp was unable to accomplish himself; he was extremely pleased with the end result, declaring that the piece was finally completed!

"Sabi" may be described as the visual appeal of anything well-worn, faded and aged.

18 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

Imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete is revered as attractive and highly desired provenance gained through time and age. The patina of a useful life that comes from burnished wood edges, frayed denim jeans and hand polished leather is joyfully sought out and enjoyed for its unpretentious earthy naturalness.

Accidental and happenstantial are key ingredients in both the Wabi-Sabi and flawesome recipe. From a blemish in a heirloom carat to a knitted fault in a hand-made sweater, these unique characteristics are integral in the growing and making of one's earthly belongings and are relished for their inherent quirks and unique distinctive traits.

UNIQUE CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES

Deeply connected to Wabi-Sabi is the repairing of prized broken ceramic objects called Kintsugi in Japan. The pieces in the repair are glued together first and the cracks are then sealed with real gold. The obviously damaged object is celebrated for its flaws and is given a rebirth, finding a new purpose and acceptance for beauty within the imperfect. Gemstones and polished sea glass are often used in the repair of severely damaged areas, adding grace and dignity to the vessel's second life with skill laden artistry.

fall in

love

Fall in love with Lanai’s favourites, French Kande, Shapeez, and Tribal, to new lines including A.S.98 boots and bags, Part II, Cream, Naya, and many more!

Wabi-Sabi concepts and flawsome principles can bridge in and touch everything in our lives - from food to personal relationships. Making a meal should be a creative, joyful act focused on nurturing ones well being. By improvising the recipe with ingredients on hand, like using basil versus thyme and enjoying the fresh textures of regionally grown heirloom veggies, one is joined to the heartbeat of what is flawsome. In relationships, the same principle applies by quietly accepting the idiosyncrasies of an individual's personality. A friend’s oddities may be embraced as endearing rather than being critically chastised for their uniquely eccentric quirks and foibles. The majority of us are raised from childhood to strive for the ideals of perfection and are driven through life's journey to achieve the extraordinary. The daunting pressure of attaining and maintaining the exceptionally high standard of perfection is rapidly depleting our global resources and mentally exhausting the human spirit. With the shedding of expectations and disengagement from meticulous behaviours while accepting flaws and faults mankind can collectively take a gigantic step forward.

Cocoon yourself in a favorite pair of well worn jeans, saddle into a weathered old chair and relish eating from a chipped vintage pottery bowl. These subtle messages of daily acceptance bring us to the essence of a life well lived while soulfully embracing what is naturally

flawsome!

Truly indicative of our personalities and integrity we listen to your needs, respect your wishes, heed your desires and value the growing friendships created. “

Wellness should be beautiful Beauty should be a reflection of inner wellness. The concept of hand-in-hand beauty and wellness has been the purpose of The De Pieri Clinic for the past 10 years. A long-time Kelowna physician, Dr Andrew De Pieri envisioned a clinic where Kelowna and area residents could access personalized wellness and aesthetic medicine. “I always want to find out what’s going on beneath the surface - it’s been my nature since I was a kid. I love investigating what’s behind a problem and exploring all the possibilities to find the best solution. I find the practice of medicine fascinating, from its early origins, all the way up to the latest innovations. I know it’s gotten to where it is by way of inquisitive minds striving to seek out the root of a problem and apply current knowledge in new, thoughtful ways. So, when I make a decision on bringing a new cosmetic laser or product into the clinic, I don’t just go with the latest thing that’s being promoted. I really ask myself if my clients are going to benefit. In some cases, the new innovations are very impressive, and make sense for my patients. In many cases, I’m more pleased with the technology that’s proven its great results time and time again.”

When asked what his favorite cosmetic treatment is, Dr. De Pieri stresses a balanced approach, using a variety of treatments, and careful artistry, to get a natural-looking, beautiful result. “While it’s really satisfying to see the fairly instant results of botox, dermal fillers, and laser treatments, I’m all about addressing all of the beauty building blocks. For example, making sure the skin is healthy at the cellular level is what gives skin its supple “glow”, completing the genuine youthful appearance. Similarly, stimulating healthy collagen below the surface is what balances overall plumpness, balancing out the effects of fillers, and achieving a natural overall look.” Body sculpting is one advancement in the aesthetic industry that Dr. De Pieri sees growing.

“More and more clients are discovering the amazing options available for body shaping and cellulite treatment. The fact that we can do this successfully in a non-invasive way is so exciting, and makes it a feasible option for more people.”

Destination weddings

Destination weddings usually conjure visions of sunset beaches in exotic locals such as Fiji, Hawaii or Acapulco, but they can also be right here in the Okanagan Valley. Maybe at a beautiful beach ceremony, a winery over looking the lake or in your own unique backyard, which many around the world would envy. Generally for destination weddings the type of gown is simpler and lighter in fabric to suit the tropical or Okanagan summer weather, making it easier to pack for your trip. Depending on their life style and preferences, some brides prefer the destination gown because they love the simpler, slimmer style. When renewing vows many prefer something a little more understated and for second or third weddings, brides tend to prefer a classic design. Having said all that, if the bride's dream gown is a blingy, princess ball gown—then that will be her perfect destination gown.

DESTINATION BRIDAL FASHION IS ONE OF OUR SPECIALTIES AT TEN FASHIONS BRIDAL BOUTIQUE. We have a great selection and can help suggest the right type of gown for any destination wedding you’re planning. Our expertise extends to all members of the bridal party; bridesmaids, flower girls, mothers of the wedding and guests. At Ten Fashions Bridal the emphasis is on service and consultation. We offer valuable tips regarding bridal party trends such as colour, style matching and thinking out of the box if there are unusual requirements or circumstances. The staff at Ten Fashions Bridal, have over 60 years of bridal consulting experience, this combined knowledge is shared to benefit the bride and her party. We happily share our expertise with all our customers and endevour to make shopping with us a wonderful experience. It is becoming customary for salons to charge for fittings and consulting services, we offer this as an inclusive service to our customers.

Let us be your destination for all your destination wedding fashions. Gabriele Gottschlag

For the morning impaired that first blissful cup of java juice is absolutely critical in their awakening routine. YAWNING IS OFTEN RECOGNIZED AS THE SILENT SCREAM FOR COFFEE THE EARLY MORNING SIGN THAT IT IS DEFINITELY TIME TO RISE AND GRIND.

The silent

m a e r c S

The really cool thing about coffee is that it hosts a complex array of molecules that provide its unique qualities and distinctive flavors. Molecules such as diacetyl contributes to the buttery flavor and guaiacol is responsible for that quintessential roasted coffee aroma. Flavors can be analyzed, categorized and factored into taste and aroma wheels similiar to those used when exploring the wine world. Interestingly coffee proudly boasts of 1500 aromatic characteristics that vary based on region, growing practises and roasting techniques. Comparitively, wine has roughly been categorized with 200 different aromatic compounds. An expert coffee officianado can detect subtle and regional flavours such as mediterrean figs or Mexican chocolate as well as the less desireable notes of rubber, petroleum and even concrete.

First introduced to England around 1650, drinking coffee quickly rose in popularity and by 1675 over 3,000 coffee houses existed. Historically these coffee houses were known as "penny universities" as they offered an alternative form of learning to the classical format of academic education. Philosophers, lawyers, scholars and academic intellectuals congregated together to read and hatch new ideas while enjoying the company of like minded peers over the new conversation inspiring beverage. Coffee continues today to be tugging us into this social behavior because it is a well known habit forming stimulant; with baristas, culture psychologists and connoisseurs recognizing that there is a great deal more to drinking coffee than just enjoying the caffeine buzz. Appreciated as the most commonly consumed beverage at home and in the workplace, the rituals of the coffee culture continue. Highly revered as a friendly component in human socialization, the phrase “Let’s go for coffee.” has become synonymous with spawning creativity, expanding friendships and sealing business deals. 24 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

With Millenials, Gen Y, iGens and Gen Z being known for valuing new experiences over owning possessions, a current quest with the younger generations is coffee tasting - which is much like wine touring.

Becoming a coffee enthusiast can begin by exploring coffee with a few flavor experiments. A great cup of coffee can be broken down by analyzing three basic components: aroma, taste and flavour. Acidity, body, colour, balance, sweetness and aftertaste are a few other terms used in describing both the quality and essence of this favored beverage. Aroma refers to the aromatic compound with a specific scent that can be identified solely by smelling. From fruity and floral to spicey and nutty - things like raspberries, toffee, almonds and chocolate all have very specific aromatic molecules found naturally in coffee that allows us to identify them solely through the sense of smell. The smelling of coffee helps to activate specific chemicals in the brain that assist in coping with stress and create an emotional response that is positively charged; basically paving the way to that “I feel good” morning mood.

This experiment will help enhance the experience while savoring your next cup of joyful java. Start first by smelling your coffee with your mouth closed, then smell the coffee a second time with your mouth open. Smelling with your mouth open helps to activate the taste buds at the back of your tongue which creates a more robust tasting sensory connection to that brewed cup of heaven.

Oil will lower the bitter flavour of tannin while introducing an interesting flavour note. Next try perking a cup of java with a tiny pinch of salt and adding a crushed egg shell over the grounds both are known as flavor enhancers. Spice notes can be explored by laying a small chunk of a cinnamon stick in the brew basket. Stir in some demerara sugar to create a well known Mexican delicacy called Cafe de Olla.

TASTE + TACTILE - The tongue provides us with our sense

For another adventurous experiment try perking merlot infused coffee.

of taste and feels the texture of both food and beverages. The senses of sweetness (the presence of sugar), sourness (the presence of acidity), bitterness, saltiness and umami are all resident on areas of the tongue. Umami is a word borrowed from Japan that can be loosely translated as that round in the mouth or "pleasant-savory-yummy" taste. In addition, the tongue senses temperature, astringency from tannin and creaminess from flavor enhancers such as milk.

FLAVOR - Our brain rapidly assembles all those sensory

details and makes associations between what it smells through the nose, tastes with the tongue and feels inside the mouth. Individual experiences will vary immensely based on one’s exposure to the endless variety of food flavours in existence.

Conducting a few flavour experiments can open up a whole new appreciation in the sensory sipping game. Coffee tannins can be quite bitter and are typically softened by adding milk or cream. Experiment and compare a tannin shift in a coffee by whisking in a dab of unsalted butter or coconut oil.

Coffee roasters are now bathing beans in red wine and aging them in oak wine barrels followed by roasting to add a unique smell of fresh, red berry flavors and subtle taste of blackberry and current. Not only a great conversation starter; the caffeine experience shifts from everyday ho-hum to distinctively unique. Adding to the newest fad in coffee consumption is brewing a fungi-focussed concoction with powdered medicinal mushrooms added to regular ground coffee. Arabica beans are brewed with endurance-boosting reishi, calming chaga, or lion’s mane mushrooms to create a smoother overall earthy flavour while claiming to increase antioxidant levels, boost immunity and stimulate brain cell function.

Today's coffee enthusiasts have a profusion of innovative mind energizers to explore and savour while

staving off their caffeine driven silent scream.

Your Breasts...

Awareness Action Attitude

BY DEANNA RAINEY

They are the words which strike fear in the hearts of women everywhere. ‘You have breast cancer’ launches so many emotions and questions that many women don’t know where to begin. While the diagnosis may be terrifying, the stats reflect good news too. Women are surviving breast cancer in record numbers, going on to lead full and healthy lives. HERE ARE SOME OF THE MOST CURRENT CANADIAN STATS:

• Breast cancer is responsible for 13 per cent of all cancer deaths in women in 2017, or about 5,000 women • 72 women per day are diagnosed with breast cancer in Canada • In 2017, the 26,300 women who were diagnosed represent about 25 per cent of all new cancer diagnoses

But…death from breast cancer has been declining steadily since the mid-1980’s. Technology, screening and improvements in treatment have resulted in a much more positive prognosis than was once the case. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, a perfect time to glimpse inside the world of two women living it and the advancements that are keeping the quest for a cure at the forefront. 26 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

Okanagan Woman readers first met Iris (pronounced Ee-ris) Fink during our 2018 Spring Makeover contest. In the year previous, she had discovered and undergone treatment for breast cancer. Iris is happy to share her experience with all women in the hope that she can help others facing the same challenges. Iris says that, upon hearing her diagnosis, her immediate reaction was shock. “You hear the stats and you know about breast cancer but you think it’s never going to happen to you. I am a relatively healthy person. The news brought out a deep fear too. You start to think about your life. For me, the important thing was that I needed to stay alive for my two daughters. I wanted to get this thing (tumor) out of me right away. My husband was and still is a great supporter. He helped with decisions but didn’t push. When I’m not feeling well or trying to do something, he’s a great cheerleader.” While the beginning of her journey at the BC Cancer Clinic left some unanswered questions, Iris recalls her overall experience as a very positive one.

“IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ATTITUDE. WHAT YOU PUT OUT COMES BACK TO YOU." She remembers being treated like a person, an individual and not a number. She felt that the staff were all genuinely interested in helping her. She says she didn’t see the oncologist regularly, but she did see a nurse practitioner on a regular basis. “Once in the system, I had amazing support. Counsellors, diet and nutrition expertise, exercise, meditation and other things of that nature were all brought forward and offered to me.” Iris found the lump in her breast in January 2017 and has just recently completed treatments…all in all, an 18 month process. This time-line is different for each individual as every situation of this nature is unique. As was reflected in her spring makeover article, Iris had an amazing attitude throughout her treatment and surgeries. “I was treated well because I was positive, although sometimes it’s hard to stay positive. That is when your husband, friends and family come in. Just knowing I have their support is what keeps me strong. Not everyone is lucky enough to have all of that.” An advocate during the journey is very important and for that, Iris turned to her husband. At one point, when she was looking at a further wait for an MRI, he was instrumental in making it happen sooner. “He just wouldn’t take no for an answer, and sometimes I wasn’t in the best position to advocate for myself,” she said. “Find an advocate, an ally. Everyone is different but as soon as I knew for sure what was happening, I decided to tell people about it. That part was difficult but so worth it because of the support that you end up getting. I found sharing to be a very important aspect.” Iris says for her, being negative simply wasn’t an option. “I had it, I had to deal with it, so I might as well be positive. After a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and Herceptin treatments, I began to feel fatigued easily. I had a double mastectomy around the beginning of October followed by radiation for about 27 days.

Now, I’m done! I just have a follow up every three months. I’m very uncertain at this point about having reconstruction. I want to get fit, strong and comfortable in my body and then I’ll decide. I’ve been going to a breast reconstruction support group. Reconstruction can be complicated and can sometimes involve more than one surgery.” Breast reconstruction is a big decision for women who have gone through the breast cancer experience. Cancer doesn’t discriminate on age, sex, race or occupation, but when it hits, it strikes like a lightning bolt.

Saideh Talarizadeh can attest to this and wanted to share her story with Okanagan Woman. At the age of 35, she was blindsided by the life-altering news of an aggressive breast cancer diagnosis called Triplenegative. Triple-negative represents 15-20 percent of all breast cancers. Upon receiving this news, “I felt like my whole world came tumbling down. I had little to no knowledge about breast cancer.” Having to face the feelings of what next, the emotions of sadness, fear, anger, and why me, became Saideh’s reality. Being too young for mammogram screening, fortunately she had found the tumour on self-examination. Because of this, she encourages everyone to educate themselves on self-examinations and, if something does not seem right, see your doctor immediately. Often, like Iris, many women choose to wait to make a final decision on reconstruction. In the meantime, there are some wonderful shops in the Okanagan who specialize in bras, prostheses and swimwear;

Bra Heaven in Vernon, Fashion Foundations in Kelowna and Peaches Lingerie in Penticton, all offer an excellent selection to meet your needs. With years of experience, their certified mastectomy fitters are trained to help women decide on a breast form that is right for them. Here, women who have faced breast surgery will find excellent advice, guidance and understanding and feel confident that they are in the right place. One of the great advancements in post-cancer treatments is in the area of paramedical cosmetics. Kacie Rainey is a paramedical cosmetic tattoo artist who deals in the area of reconstructive work including scar camouflaging and recreation of the areola. She has trained under top masters in Europe, especially Switzerland. In this relatively new field, her expertise is in high demand and she spends time each month working in the Okanagan at Helix Integrative Health, headed by Dr. Krista Hennigar and Dr. David Hatton. Prolotherapy is a process performed by the doctors that involves injections to break up intensive scar tissue leaving the skin fresh and a lot smoother. This allows Kacie to use camouflage tattoos over the scars, resulting in far less visible scarring. This type of tattooing is also used to create an areola. Kacie says pain is minimal, as the tattoo artists work with top grade topical anesthetics to ensure the patients are numbed throughout the entire procedure. “Our pigments are specifically designed to match skin tones and correct the redness of a scar.” Kacie explained that the same process is used to deal with many types of scarring including surgery scars, skin grafts and even cleftpalates.

There are numerous efforts underway to help advance and support the research and treatment for breast cancer. One of the most recognized of these is CIBC’s Run for the Cure; it is the largest single day volunteer-led event in Canada, and raised $17 million in 2017. The funds are invested in the most promising breast cancer research in the areas of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care.

Awareness, action and attitude will be the key to success for today’s women facing this dreaded disease! OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018 27

it’s all in the fit ...

BRA-VO!

From rustling rice to soft silicone…breast forms have changed greatly over the years. We have heard of many creative solutions including a lady whos caring husband gave her buckshot to add to a handful of cotton batten to fill the cup of her bra. And, of course, many ladies have found a use for those single socks we all have! It is generally 4 – 8 weeks after surgery that a woman is ready for her fitting. When ladies first come to us they are usually apprehensive… Not knowing what’s next. Our fitters take a few minutes to chat & ask if there are any questions or concerns and, cost is often one of the first questions raised. For that we have a great answer! all of us in BC are covered by BC’s FAIR Pharmacare Program which many ladies are not familiar with. A woman who has had a mastectomy is eligible for a prostheses every two years through Pharmacare. The amount that is covered by Pharmacare is based on her income and once she has reached the current years deductible with

medical expenses – Pharmacare starts contributing. At Fashion Foundations, we are connected to Pharmacare and can do the billing with you in the store. Some ladies will also have extra coverage through their extended health care plans. After the initial conversation, the most important part of the visit begins: Finding the right bra! The bra must be a good fit and when the breast form is inserted everything will be comfortable. A good fitting bra will also help prevent neck and shoulder pain and often posture is immediately improved. If you have heard that breast prostheses are heavy, it is almost always the fit of the bra that is to blame. Some of the older silicone forms were quite heavy, however, there are several choices of prostheses with different weights today. Some, in fact, are very light! There needs to be a certain amount of weight to the form to match the drape of

your natural breast. The best option can be found when trying the many different choices we have to offer. If you have heard that a friend had hers fall out while gardening… we are quite positive we need to blame the bra for that!! Post-mastectomy bras all have soft pockets built into them for the breast form to slip inside. Some ladies have their favorite “traditional” bra that is a good fit and choose to add a pocket to it or some ladies just slip the form in on its own! There are also post-mastectomy sports bras & swimwear designed with pockets! For those facing such a confusing challenge we are pleased to offer our support and advice to ease your concerns. ONCE UPON A TIME, OUR HOME & BUSINESS BURNED TO THE GROUND. In July of 2017—just one year after my husband Dr. Wesley Woychuk and I opened the doors to W180MD, an anti-aging and regenerative medicine oasis—our beloved home and clinic were destroyed by the fast moving wildfire in Lake Country, BC. Thankfully, we were able to get out just in time with our pets, but W180MD as we knew it was no longer standing.

The original vision for W180MD was modest but distinct. We wanted to offer the community a private, comfortable, boutique clinic where they could work on their inner and outer health. At the time, it made sense for us to build the clinic into the bottom half of our home in Lake Country, with the front doors just steps away from an outdoor poolside space built with our patients in mind.

The months that followed were hard, but thanks to the unbelievable support of our community and our patients, we were determined to rebuild and renew. All of this love has inspired us to bring W180MD back bigger and better, and our minds and hearts have been busy building our team and restoring our dream and passion. Many things have changed, but W180MD’s approach to regenerative, anti-aging medicine has not.

We believe that outward appearance and inner vitality are intertwined, and that the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle alongside non-invasive rejuvenation techniques, and specialized hormone therapy can improve your health and the quality of your life. We’re more dedicated than ever to providing exceptional healthcare to our Lake Country, Kelowna, and Okanagan Valley patients.

That’s why, when Laurie chose this well-known, multiaward winning novel, I had mixed feelings. It’s great to get involved in trending discussions. On the other hand, I love discovering new reads. The LOL have read several novels set during WWII. Frankly, I wasn’t sure I wanted to delve into yet another that explored the atrocities of Nazi Germany and the immeasurable suffering the war brought to all sides. Then, there was the weight of it. Set in the pastoral village of Carriveau, France, the Nightingale tells the story of two sisters swept up in the war. Each of them fights to survive, on their own remarkable, though radically different, terms. Vianne Mauriac is a teacher, wife to Antoine, and doting mother to their young daughter. A gardener and an extraordinary cook, Vianne is content to spend her weekends strolling the countryside with her family. Spreading a delicious picnic complete with soft cheese, crusty bread, and rich, red wine, her heart swells simply watching her husband and daughter play.

L O L | L A D I E S O N L I T E R AT U R E

Are you running yet to the library to borrow your copy? I hope so, because here’s the truth: this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. -Shannon

When Antoine is called to the front, everything about Vianne’s quiet life enters the realm of the tumultuous unknown. As the Germans invade France, she is forced to take in a Nazi soldier. Scrutinized by her neighbours, Vianne steadfastly cooks for the enemy while she and her daughter often go hungry. Yet the soldier is a handsome and complicated man, as tortured by his forced stay in her home as Vianne is resentful. Meanwhile her younger, brilliant, and rebellious sister, 18-year old Isabelle, is kicked out of finishing school and struggling to find herself. Infuriated by the German invasion and impassioned with purpose, Isabelle joins the French Resistance, falling in love with a fellow fighter. Both sisters go on to endure unfathomable pain, but each remains committed to her cause. The hope her husband will return and the drive to keep her child alive, consume Vianne. She endures starvation and frigid winters

where newspaper stuffed beneath ragged clothing provides scarce insulation. Forced to make shocking decisions in the name of survival, her strength and courage are astounding. Meanwhile, Isabelle also risks her life. She distributes anti-German pamphlets before becoming involved in a dangerous, underground mission that finds her taking a place in history. Through the bleak setting, Kristen Hannah manages to infuse light and love, portraying the unsung heroines of war with admiration and compassion. The author skilfully keeps the reader turning pages with a tricky plot and plenty of twists. This book deserves all the praise you’ve heard. Now commissioned for a motion picture, get a copy and get reading before the movie comes out.

This morning you likely woke with a smile and jumped out of bed before your alarm. You were showered, dressed and in the kitchen enjoying a healthy breakfast and steaming cup of coffee with time to spare before heading out the door to start your day. If this was you, congratulations! The fact of the matter is, sleep, or lack thereof, has become somewhat of an epidemic and is, in one way or another, affecting all of us.

LACK OF SLEEP keeping you UP?

Sleep also helps regulate our weight. Like with stress, lack of sleep causes the body to release cortisol, and store fat. Also, without enough sleep, the body cannot properly metabolize and use the food we give it, thereby negatively affecting our immune function as well. In addition, chronic sleeplessness puts adults at risk for heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and puts kids at a higher risk for becoming overweight, developing diabetes, as well as attention and learning problems. For kids and adults, sleep is just as important as eating right and getting enough exercise. It's when we sleep that our brains are able to release toxins, lowering our chances for disease. Statistics Canada's website reports that, “According to results of the 2007-to-2013 CHMS, 43% of men and 55% of women aged 18 to 64 reported trouble going to sleep or staying asleep ‘sometimes/most of the time/all of the time’. That's roughly half the population of Canada lying in bed counting sheep every night. And when we do drift off, researchers found that nearly half did not find their sleep refreshing and one-third said they found it difficult to keep from dozing off during the day. Reports aren't much better for our nation's children either. One in three kids have difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep, one in five find it difficult to stay awake during the day and one in 10 say they do not feel rested in the morning. 34 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

So, what do all these numbers and statistics really mean from a health perspective? Sleep affects almost every area of the body and mind and without it, we will die. That's extreme of course, but just to put things in perspective, the body can go days and sometimes even weeks with out food and/or water. Miss even one day of sleep however, and a performance test would score you the same as someone whose blood alcohol level was over the legal limit. Cognitive functions like logic and reasoning, moods, attention, memory, focus, concentration, balance, speech, vision, along with reaction and response time are all negatively affected due to lack of sleep.

Losing sleep is so much more than just being tired. Beginning to dread laying your head on that pillow tonight? If sleep is something that eludes you, here are seven strategies you can put in place immediately to help you get the rest you need. MAKE SURE YOUR ROOM IS COMPLETELY DARK. Sleep comes to us in five stages, the first two being light sleep, the second two deeper and REM sleep. To simplify, the brain cycles down through light sleep, into deeper sleep and then back up through light sleep again and into REM, optimally repeating these cycles several times before waking.

The brain is designed to start preparing for sleep when the sun goes down and wake up when the sun rises. Lights from phones, iPads, laptops, alarm clocks, etc., all emit blue light that mimics sunlight, and interrupts our sleep cycles, or circadian rhythm.

EMPTY YOUR THOUGHTS. Take five or ten minutes before bed to jot down any and all thoughts that are swirling around in your mind preventing you from relaxing. This simple act tells your brain you've acknowledged the thoughts and will get back to them later.

KEEP THE TEMPERATURE IN YOUR BEDROOM A FEW DEGREES COOLER THAN REGULAR ROOM TEMPERATURE. Our body temperature normally drops when we sleep so creating that environment helps our bodies adapt and go to sleep more quickly.

PRACTICE DEEP BREATHING AND MEDITATION. Just 20 minutes of quiet breathing and focus can help make a significant difference in the relax response, allowing the body to drift off sooner. If you don't currently practice meditation, the Insight Timer app is a great place to start.

ESTABLISH A ROUTINE FOR TURNING IN AND WAKING UP. Our bodies love consistency and maintaining a schedule really helps it to wind down and prepare for sleep. ESTABLISH A “NO POWER HOUR” BEFORE BED. Opting for a book, newspaper, magazine over an iPhone, iPad, or laptop an hour before bed, eliminates that blue light and provides time for the brain to prepare for sleep. HAVE A HOT BATH OR COLD SHOWER. Raising the body temperature in a long hot bath then quickly lowering it by stepping into the cool air, gets the body and brain ready for sleep. A 10 minute cold shower will do the same thing if time is an issue.

So instead of hitting the snooze button each morning, loading up on caffeine at work, and collapsing onto the couch every evening, too exhausted to spend time with family or friends, wake up! I encourage you to choose the strategy(ies) that speaks to you and try it for a month. Sleep on it and see for yourself.

Rest assured, good things will happen. TANIA GUSTAFSON Nutritionist & Fitness Coach (IBNFC)

SEPARATION FOR 'EMPTY NESTERS' Taryn is the Practice Leader of Pushor Mitchell’s Family Law Group. She provides family litigation services and is a collaborative law practitioner. Her top client priorities are clear communication, compassion and accessibility, and she considers a trusting relationship with her clients, the single most important aspect of a good law practice.

Couples often experience significant change when their kids move out, and they retire or head towards retirement. It all sounds very idyllic but adjusting to these new norms can come with uncertainties, leading to conflict amongst couples.

It goes without saying that couples who recognize these relationship changes early, and who seek advice and support, are better equipped to manage the transition. However, changing social stigmas, a no-fault approach in divorce and an increasing aging population has led to an increase in the numbers of people separating at this stage in life. Statistics Canada estimates that 37.6% of marriages are expected to terminate by the twenty-fifth year, and 43.1% of marriages are expected to terminate by the fiftieth year. The process of separation is often very trying on several fronts: emotionally, financially, mentally and physically. Separation for ‘empty nesters’ has its own special series of issues. There are many steps in the legal process key to protecting your interests and managing your life going forward that a lawyer can help you with. Most empty nesters are no longer required to negotiate parenting issues and monthly child support although assisting children through post-secondary education can still be an issue that needs addressing. Most negotiations for this demographic tend to be focused around division of family property, debt and spousal support.

It is very important that parties seek out legal assistance to ensure that they are aware of their rights and obligations arising out of the relationship breakdown. Some typical issues to address can include division of pensions, investments, allocation of debt, and spousal support before and after retirement. Once you have consulted with a lawyer, it is generally recommended that you opt to resolve

36 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

matters outside of Court, if appropriate for your specific circumstances. To do so, you can explore different out of Court resolution processes including Mediation and the Collaborative Law Process.

It is key that any settlement, either by agreement or Court Order, is done with full financial disclosure of each party’s finances including income, property and debt. Ideally, parties can resolve matters in a fair manner and move forward into the next stage of their lives with confidence and certainty. There is another consideration for those separated or divorced empty nesters who enter into a new relationship; that is a Cohabitation or Prenuptial Agreement. It is highly recommended to those entering into a new, committed relationship that they consult with a lawyer to discuss whether a Cohabitation or Prenuptial Agreement would be an appropriate step. When combining finances where prior family assets and debts are involved, it is important to understand and address concerns regarding future rights and obligations of the new relationship.

Embracing Your

Singledom

Being single should not be viewed as an obstacle that needs to be overcome. It’s an opportunity to do some powerful introspective work on who you are and who you want to be without the influence of well-meaning partners or friends. Being single is not the same as being alone. JOY MCGINNIS - LUXURY TRAVEL ADVISOR

The loneliest I’ve ever been, was while in the wrong relationship.

Direct: 250 317 3121 Office: 778 478 2928 joy@traveltime.ca www.traveltime.ca

The 2016 Canadian Census published that for the first time ever, single person households surpassed all other forms of living situations. They accounted for over 28 percent of all households. So, singles are a trending force! I won’t lie. It was a little scary the first time I travelled alone. The “what ifs” added up and friends “cautionary tales” did little to boost my confidence but in the end, I overcame my trepidations and had an amazing time. I learned to rely on myself. I learned to trust my instincts and resilience. I learned that delayed flights and missed connections were not deal-breakers but in fact opportunities to new unforeseen adventures. I ate what I wanted, when I wanted. I walked as far as I wanted. If the museum was closed once I got there, well who cared? I didn’t ruin anyone else’s day. Some days I did nothing at all and simply lived in the moment. In the past while travelling with friends or lovers, the travel was often based on their budgets and expectations. When travelling with a group of friends we all tend to act our “role”. There’s the “organizer”, the “party-er”, the “shopper” and the whole trip revolves around preconceived behaviours. Being somewhere where no one knows you allows you to break through your own pre-determined barriers and indulge and explore in being true to yourself. And let’s face it. When you’re being your true authentic self you’re more likely to attract the right person! So, let’s start with the young professional looking for a quick break in a busy schedule. You love bottle service in Vegas, high end restaurants, chic accommodations and fantastic nightlife. 38 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

Look no further than Breathless Resorts. Four fabulous beachfront options await Adults only and unlimited all-inclusive luxury. Top trending entertainment and sophisticated ambiance make this getaway perfect for singles looking to mix, mingle and rejuvenate before heading back to the real world. Now for those looking for something further afield and more experiential. National Geographic with G Adventures is my personal favorite for small group immersive travel. A Canadian company with a deep ethical bond towards sustainable tourism, G Adventures offers options for every continent and level of travel comfort. The same sex share program allows singles to travel at no extra charge. Travel styles appeal to backpackers right through to luxury clientele. Transportation, accommodation and local guides. You travel alone but share the surreal with fellow like-minded travellers. Selfie sticks not required. River cruising is still trending number one. Pricing that includes meals, tours

and accommodations wrapped up within an “unpack once” mentality makes for a fun and easy vacation. Avalon Waterways has recently announced that it is waiving the single supplement on all of it’s cruises for 2019! There is a capacitycontrolled aspect to this offer so early booking is essential! Like small group travel, river cruising allows the single traveller privacy yet also the inclusion of being part of something bigger. Even ocean cruising is waking up to the growing numbers of SOLO travellers. Holland America has recently released specific single occupancy ocean view cabins. No longer relegated to the bowels of interior cabins, singles can now benefit from morning sunshine and specialized pricing. Travelling by yourself need not cost more. Your relationship status does not dictate your ability to travel. Travelling will open you up to the world and better yet to yourself. Embrace this time in your life. You’re exactly where you are meant to be.

WE TRAVEL NOT TO ESCAPE LIFE, BUT FOR LIFE NOT TO ESCAPE US. ~ Anonymous

WHEN IN RHÔNE... THE OKANAGAN VALLEY! OUR SECRET IS OUT. WHERE ELSE CAN YOU FIND CANADA’S SUNNIEST WEATHER AND A SPARKLING 135-KILOMETER LAKE, NESTLED BETWEEN TERRACED HILLSIDES IN THE HEART OF A WORLD-CLASS WINE REGION? WE’RE BLESSED AND WE KNOW IT. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t explore the riches offered by other parts of our planet. A vacation provides the opportunity to escape the daily grind, expand your horizons, meet new people and create some indelible memories that will sustain you until…well, your next vacation.

MIGHT I RECOMMEND… Do you have an urge to wander hills streaked with lavender? How about sipping delicious wine, while savoring never-ending views of vines and almonds trees? Have you a yearning to amble cobbled streets of mysterious medieval villages? What about experiencing, firsthand, rural life à la français?

If you’re already nodding your head and drooling, add to your Bucket List the village of Vaison la Romaine and the heavenly hill towns that surround it. In the south of France, about 140 kilometers north of coastal Marseille, the region is perfectly Provençal and in the heart of Côtes du Rhône country, a region famous for its namesake wines. Autumn is the perfect time to visit. The crowds have dissipated, returning Provence to the locals, and the days remain warm and sunny well into the fall. Sprawling vineyards and rolling fields are painted in hues of rust and gold, and best of all, it’s La Vendange (the grape harvest), a time to discover how that Syrah you’re having with dinner ends up in your wineglass.

VAISON LA ROMAINE Like an open-air museum, Vaison la Romaine hails from a time when Romans were flexing their Imperial muscles, scattering arenas and baths across the countryside.

BY LAURA GOSSET

They came. They saw. They conquered. Then they disappeared. Two thousand years ago, “Vasio”, as it was then known, was a prosperous Roman settlement of six-thousand people. Only recently has the population returned to that level. It’s mind-altering to stroll to your favourite boulangerie for daily bread, passing ruins of mansions, bath-houses, shops, even an amphitheater interfacing seamlessly with contemporary buildings. On a hilltop on the other side of the Ouvèze River is Old Town. Wander over the two-thousand-year old Roman bridge, through the ramparts and fortified gate and voilà, you’re magically transported to the Middle Ages. If a knight and his damsel emerged from one of the stone buildings, it would seem perfectly natural. Soaking up the lifestyle in Vaison la Romaine, you begin to understand that elusive, but oh so seductive, French concept of “Joie de Vivre”! Imagine relaxing on the terrace of a funky wine bar in the sun-kissed main square. The smell of fresh garlic and aromatic herbs wafts over from the bistro next door.

On your other side, a lively càfe is humming with locals speaking beautiful French. Just listening to them makes you feel chic. You sip your crisp, cool rosé, and nibble the best olives you’ve ever tasted, while you watch the world pass by.

VILLAGES: PRETTY, PETIT AND PLENTIFUL Vaison, the largest town in the area, makes a great base for exploring the many tiny villages studding the neighbouring hillsides. I lived in the region for a couple of months and managed to visit twenty-one (yes, I counted). Many more still remain on my Must-See List. Evolved during the sixteenth century, these places have outer ramparts that provided protection from marauding nastiness and a chateau capping the hill as a final safe haven when under siege. Each has the requisite chapel (with steeple or bell tower), at least one fountain (usually more), hidden squares and narrow, cobbled streets that twist and turn through crowds of traditional stone houses. They’re so atmospheric, aimless wandering will become your new passion. Here’s a few of my favourites: Ancient Gigondas, a haven for walkers and winedrinkers, is tucked between its vineyards and the Dentelles de Montmirail. The rugged cliffs and rocky crests of this mountain range look like the spiny back plates of a stegosaurus in Jurassic times, and they provide kilometer-afterkilometer of dramatic hiking. Overlooking the lavender fields below, the fortified mountain village of Brantes sits high on the slopes north of Mont Ventoux of Tour de France fame. And tiny Suzette is not much more than a wide spot in the road, but oh-la-la, those hilltop vistas! The village of La Roque-Airic (population 70) clings to the flanks of the Dentelles and, like a sentinel, a natural rock outcropping pierces through the centre of the village. And then there’s ancient Crestet. It melts into the landscape of a high mountain ridge and is so authentic you’ll feel medieval just ambling its rugged rock lanes and staircases. For cyclists, this area begs to be explored on two wheels. Consider pairing wine tasting or a relaxed lunch with a pedal from village-to-village. These picture-perfect places are usually perched on hilltops, so beware! The difficulty of the ride increases in direct proportion to the amount of vin consumed en-route. Don’t worry, your efforts will be well rewarded. Sweeping views of the limestone teeth of the Dentelles and the barren, wind-swept top of Mount Ventoux, the Giant of Provence, are so spectacular you’ll be compelled to get off your bike and gape.

THE ART OF EATING AND DRINKING Mon dieu, do not attempt to diet! The French take their food and wine seriously. Much of their (considerable) leisure time is spent shopping for, preparing and enjoying great cuisine – after all, they invented the word! Go ahead, indulge in the “Holy Trinity” (bread, cheese and wine), and, those decadent patisseries.

You’re on vacation! Revel in these pleasures of life like the French, with ritual self-indulgence and not an ounce of guilt.

To truly immerse yourself in the essence of this region, you must stroll through a weekly open-air market, an integral part of the culture of France. In Vaison, the Tuesday morning market has been a central feature of life dating back to 1483. From artfully displayed meat, fish, cheeses and sausages to golden, crusty baguettes; from truffles, pasta, spices to a dizzying array of olives (who knew they came in so many colours?), you can buy almost anything you need and a lot you don’t in a Provençal market. Le marché is on a different day in each village and everything is farm fresh and impossible to resist! The grapes in the region, grown on the côtes (hillsides) of the Rhône River Valley, produce wines of character without breaking the bank. You can pick up an entirely drinkable bottle of Côtes du Rhône for about four or five Euros! And the reds for which Gigondas is so renowned, are considered comparable to the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pap - only much cheaper. Drink up, mes amis? “When in Rhône…”

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME… All good things must come to an end! With a suitcase of dirty laundry and a myriad of belle memories, it’s always good to be home. Even after a trip of a lifetime, the natural beauty of the Okanagan reaffirms how lucky we are to live here. Returning, we see our Valley with new eyes and fresh appreciation.

That’s what travel does!

Stashing your CASH WHERE TO PUT THE EXTRA MONEY BY MEGHAN MACDONALD

Maybe you’ve checked your cash flow, and identified some extra money in your monthly budget to sock away, or maybe you’ve gotten a commission or bonus from your employer and are looking to put it aside for a rainy day.

How do you decide where it goes? Here are some options to consider when choosing the right place for your savings.

RETIREMENT SAVINGS PLAN (RSP)

An RSP is a tax-deferred investment account which allows you to grow your savings for retirement. When you contribute to an RSP, your contributions can be used to reduce your taxable income, but you may face taxes when you choose to withdraw from the RSP. There is no tax on any gains or investment income while the assets are held within the RSP. You can hold different types of assets in an RSP, like equities, bonds, most mutual funds and may be able to hold other investments that qualify under the Income Tax Act. There is also an annual contribution limit which is based on a percentage of your earned income that accumulates year after year, subject to certain adjustments.

Consider If: • • •

You are saving for retirement. You are saving to purchase your first home, as the RSP Home Buyers’ Plan allows you to withdraw money from your RSP to purchase your first home, subject to eligibility and conditions. You are between 18-71 years of age and you expect your income to be lower in retirement than when you were working.

TAX-FREE SAVINGS ACCOUNT (TFSA)

A TFSA is an investment account in which gains and investment income are not taxed when earned in the account, and are not taxed when withdrawn. Each year the government designates a limit for contributions and that room accumulates year after year. A TFSA can hold many different types of investments provided they qualify under the Income Tax Act, such as cash and GICs, stocks and bonds, along with mutual funds and ETFs. You have to be 18 years of age or older to open one.

Consider If: • • • •

You are over the age of 71, rather than an RSP, which must be converted to retirement income by the end of the calendar year in which you turn 71. You expect to have a sizeable pension or a sizeable income upon retirement, for example more than the Old Age Security claw-back threshold. You are establishing a short-term savings account or an emergency fund. You want to diversify your retirement income to take advantage of government benefits or tax credits when you retire.

NON-REGISTERED INVESTMENT

Non-registered investments are taxed in different ways. Interest income is fully taxable as personal income. Half of capital gains is taxable as income and dividends from Canadian sources are “grossed up” and then subject to a dividend tax credit. Dividends may be more tax-efficient than interest income. There are no contribution limits.

Consider If: • •

You have already reached, or are close to the contribution limits on your registered accounts. You have already reached the contribution limit on your TFSA and expect to be in a higher tax bracket on retirement than your working years.

OTHER OPTIONS:

RESP (REGISTERED EDUCATION SAVINGS PLAN)

If you are planning to pay for or contribute to your children’s higher education, consider putting some of your extra money into an RESP. The federal government will contribute an additional 20 per cent on annual contributions of up to $2,500, up to a lifetime grant maximum of $7,200 per beneficiary. Additional grants may be available to lower and middle income families.

PAY DOWN YOUR MORTGAGE

There is no hard and fast rule about saving versus paying down debt, like a mortgage. If you are trying to figure out which should be a priority, consider the interest rate you are paying on your mortgage, and the rate of return you are getting on your investments. Given the current low interest rate environment, if you think you can reap a higher rate of return from an investment, whether it be stocks or mutual funds, you may consider using the money to invest rather than paying off your mortgage. However, if you believe it may be difficult to get a rate of return that is higher than your mortgage rate, then paying off your mortgage may be a prudent choice.

There are many considerations when deciding where to put your money, and everyone’s priorities and situations are different. So talk with a financial professional who can help you weigh your options. You’ll need to consider your financial goals, whether they are short-term or long-term, market conditions, and your tolerance for debt and risk. And ideally, your final decision may come down to which goals or priorities are more important to you. welcome to fall,

THAT SPECIAL TIME OF YEAR WHEN THE LEAVES CHANGE COLOUR, THE WIND GETS COOLER, AND THE WORLD BECOMES OBSESSED WITH ALL THINGS PUMPKIN.

Pumpkin Fun

BY STEPHANIE HORMAN

WE OFFICIALLY RETIRE OUR BATHING SUITS FOR ANOTHER SEASON, AND COVER UP OUR TAN LINES WITH COZY SWEATERS, AND OUR FAVOURITE PAIR OF WORN IN JEANS.

Now is when the hunt begins for that perfect pumpkin to display on your front step. I'm not completely sure what the full criteria for a perfect pumpkin is, but what I do know, is that my daughters are painfully selective when it comes to deciding what will make the cut for Halloween. 44 OKANAGAN WOMAN FALL | 2018

What I can guarantee is that after awkwardly struggling to carry the very large pumpkin through the store and pack it into the car, I always take a moment to stop and reconsider the idea of joining a gym. Next is the carving of this monstrosity. In theory, this is one of those picture perfect, lasting family memories. A fall tradition where the family gathers around the table, bakes pumpkin seeds, and joyfully talk about their day, as the husband skillfully carves an intricate face onto a beautiful pumpkin that you display proudly on your front porch until Halloween. Does that scenario actually ever happen with anyone out there? Because I'll be honest, every year I imagine that carving a pumpkin is going to end up like that, but let me tell you how it actually happens. We still gather around the table, and the kids eagerly watch in anticipation as my husband cuts off the top of the pumpkin, however one look inside and both kids quickly refuse to help hollow it out. Through the looks of disgust in my family's eyes,

I'm stuck scraping the entire thing out myself.

After hollowing out that ridiculously large pumpkin, I am determined to bake seeds that would put Martha Stewart's Halloween recipes to shame. I spend the better part of an hour separating the gooey slime from the seeds, pop them in the oven, then decide that this is way too much work to ever attempt to make again. While my seeds bake in the oven, the family and I argue over what will get carved on the pumpkin. After major debate, we settle on a witch, with a spooky cat at her side, and a ghost flying over top. My husband pulls out a knife, and this is when we soon realize his carving skills are subpar.

Our spooky cat quickly turns into a sad looking dolphin, which then turns into a huge hole on the front of that oversized perfectly picked out pumpkin! As my kid’s eyes start to fill up with tears over the fact that daddy has now destroyed Halloween, I quickly hand out sharpies, and stickers for us to decorate the variety of random squash and vegetables I luckily had on hand for supper.

The girls adorn their butternut and acorn squash, with jewels and sparkles. Dad uses a sharpie to skillfully draw a stick figure of what I think is a zombie eating a hotdog onto his spaghetti squash, and mama? Well mama gets a zucchini, because we've now ran out of squash. But you know what? In the end, nobody cared that we no longer had our large pin worthy pumpkin. Nobody even cared that we had to order in pizza because our supper was now decorated and perched on our front steps.

The night didn't go as picture perfect as I had hoped, it had turned out even better. The memories weren't made with a prizewinning pumpkin. LEST WE FORGET Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day or Poppy Day, is in honor of the end of World War One, which occurred at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. 100 years have since past and Remembrance Day has become a time to pay respect to the fallen from all our wars. It is said that the first moment of silence associated with Remembrance Day was a tradition adopted by British military members stationed in South Africa in 1918. There was one minute of silence to honor the fallen, and one to honor those who had returned.

Today, two minutes of silence is held at 11:00 a.m. on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in many places around the world. Also on this day, National War Memorials have official ceremonies where wreaths are laid at local war memorials and many people lay poppies, letters and photographs on the tomb. WHY ARE POPPIES WORN ON REMEMBRANCE DAY? The poppy grew into a symbol of the fallen thanks to the poetry of a Canadian military physician, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.

In Flanders Fields by John Mccrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

ALL-NATURAL SKIN AND BODY CARE

THE PRODUCTS OF THE BEEHIVE ARE WELL-KNOWN FOR THEIR INTERNAL BENEFITS TO OUR BODIES, but did you know they also offer many benefits when applied externally as part of your body care regime? Many of us incorporate raw honey as part of our health lifestyle, but did you know honey can also offer many benefits to our bodies on the outside? You may be surprised to learn that one of the earliest uses of honey was as a wound dressing, and it works so well because of its amazing natural ability to fight bacteria and attract and hold moisture. When applied topically, honey can help moisturize, fight aging, and provide our skin with antioxidants, nutrients, and healing compounds. It’s important to use raw honey which has not been heated or pasteurized because these processes can destroy many of the antioxidants. Honey attracts and retains moisture making it the perfect ingredient for skin masks and lotions. For a natural, at home moisturizing mask, spread one teaspoon raw honey on clean, dry skin, and let sit for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with tepid water.

The enzymes in raw honey clarify skin and keep pores clear and clean. Honey contains antibacterial and antifungal properties that thwart bacteria that can lead to breakouts. Its anti-inflammatory properties will calm redness and irritation. Combined with tea tree oil, honey is a great addition to natural acne treatments. Honey is also said to lighten skin, and its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compounds help to decrease the appearances of scars and increase healing and tissue regeneration. Look for natural moisturizers and serums containing raw honey and reap the many skin benefits it can offer. In addition to nourishing our skin, honey also offers many benefits when used in your hair care regime. The enzymes and nutrients in raw honey give dull hair shine without weighing it down, striking the perfect balance between volume and shine.

For an easy at-home hair mask, mix one tablespoon raw honey with two tablespoons coconut oil. Apply thoroughly to the bottom two-thirds of damp hair, starting at the ends and working up. Let sit for 20 minutes, and rinse well. Honey shampoos and conditioners are becoming a huge beauty trend, just remember to look for natural paraben-free formulas so the products do the least damage possible to the bees’ natural environment. In addition to raw honey, one of the products from the beehive most beneficial to our skin is Royal Jelly. The food of the queen bee in the hive, Royal Jelly is a powerful stimulator of natural collagen production in our skin and helps improve skin elasticity. Royal Jelly can be taken internally in a capsule form to work from the inside out or added to topical skincare products such as night cream or as a natural boost to stretch mark creams.

Kirk Penton’s journalism career has taken him to all corners of North America, but he feels right at home telling stories in the beautiful Okanagan. The new editor of Castanet’s partner business website OkanaganEdge.net has lived in Kelowna for a year, and it didn’t take long for him to get a feel for what makes the region tick from a business perspective. Whether it’s tourism, technology, wine or one of many other local industries, Kirk was able to hit the ground running in his new role.

Got a business story to tell or business-related news tip? Contact Kirk at kirk@okanaganedge.net.

“Everyone wants to know what’s happening in their own backyard,” Kirk says, “and I love to tell those stories with a focus on businesses and especially the people who run them.” Kirk started his media career as a teenager, writing for his family’s weekly newspaper in Moosomin, Sask., and followed that up with stints at the Brandon Sun and Winnipeg Sun, where he covered the CFL, NHL and NFL. He has also worked in the news department and did plenty of business reporting before arriving in the Okanagan Valley. Kirk and his wife, Sarah, have two boys, Zach and Oliver, and they are all heavily involved in the community already. It didn’t take long for Kelowna to feel like home, he says.

Are you tired of body impressions in your

MATTRESS?

O

hhhh... the dreaded body impression!

Only Sleepy's have the cure! So, you just invested in a new sleep set and already in six months to a year you are noticing a large hump up the middle of the mattress with two deep sinkholes on either side of the top where your bodies lay. You call the salesperson that sold it to you and you are told that body impressions are normal, that the mattress is conforming to your body. You are told to rotate your mattress more often or if you have a king size, to make quarter turns and this should minimize the issue. Then you find out that these sags have to be visibly more than 1.5" to 2" deep

before you can have anything done about it. You explain that you have to roll uphill to meet your partner and are told again that this is normal? "Well, I assure you that this issue is very common, but it is not normal!" says Geoff McLeary, Owner of Sleepy's – Bedroom Furniture & Sleep Shop in Kelowna. Going back 12 years ago and beyond, mattresses did not get body impressions. Most good mattresses performed very well for years and stood the test of time. The mattress of today will last (if you're lucky) an average of 5 to 6 years and most get these dreaded body impressions in a very short period of time. Mattress sets of the past lasted more than 10 to 12 years or longer. Back when the mattress makers decided to brainwash the North American public into believing that half a mattress was better than a whole one, it wasn't so bad. Most of the factories upgraded the quality of the components in the top of the mattress to give the bed more integrity. Sadly, after a few short years, the larger mattress stores put pressure on the manufacturers to reduce their wholesale costs

so they could amp up their profit margins even more. The only way this could be achieved is by using inferior components and/or sourcing lower priced fillers from China.. . even spring systems come from there now. Some of the largest mattress makers are using 1.2 lb. density foam in their high-end sleep sets. That's only one step above "camping foam" folks! Sleepy's owner, Geoff McLeary does not like this! He says, “At Sleepy's, we do not like our clients to have issues with their sleep. We want happy and well rested customers! Sleep is important and your new mattress should enhance your health, not take away from it." He has teamed up with the Restonic and Spring Air Mattress factories in Vancouver to resurrect the two sided flippable mattress. These two mattress makers build their beds with integrity, they use all North American components, and they are not in any of the bigger mattress stores. Restonic has won the Women's Choice Award for the most recommended mattress brand for four years in a row. As well as the Consumer's Digest Best Buy Award for the eighth year in a row. So, for about 15% to 25% increase in the cost. . . you will receive over 100% additional lifespan on your new double sided flippable mattress. The mattress will perform better, will feel better over a much longer period of time, and will retain it's shape for the long term. "We offer a range of two sided mattresses starting at $388 queen size.

my dad sells the best mattresses!

"Sleepy's also specialize in a lesser known superior material used in their mattresses, toppers, and pillows ... pure latex. Latex is the longest lasting material used in the mattress industry and is derived from the rubber tree. You never have to flip or rotate a quality latex mattress, because these comfortable sleep systems will perform for the long term. Our most popular latex bed offers a 20 year full non prorated warranty and an unheard of 3/4" body impression tolerance over that 20 year period of time. McLeary says "We have had clients come into our store that were dealing with a big mattress store in town and have gone through as many as five mattresses in two years due to premature body impressions/ warranty issues and are looking for solutions. They found Sleepy's offered them a solution, a better built and refreshing alternative to the defective designs being offered from other stores. "Sleepy's are also striving to be your destination "green" sleep shop in the Okanagan. "We offer a nice range of green, natural, and organic mattresses and bedding for your better sleep and better health. "Sleepy's promise to offer you only the best materials in their mattresses. Nothing made in China! No smoke and mirrors. No toxic memory foam. No gimmicks! Just the straight goods from the owner himself. You will find Sleepy's - The Mattress Store - just behind Costco on Baron Road in Kelowna - or visit our virtual showroom at www.sleepys.ca to get a feel of who we are.
