Greetings to you all this summer! Whether you are an OC alum, current student, friend or family member of a student, or someone considering Okanagan College for the first time - we’re thrilled you’re looking through our Fall 2023 course offerings in Continuing Studies and Corporate Training.

At Okanagan College, we think about post-secondary education differently: it’s not a one-time experience or something that looks the same for everyone. Learning is a lifelong journey, and as such, our courses are designed to fit in and around your life. Whether you are a working professional looking for ways to upskill and progress in your career, or someone who is pursuing a passion project and interest, or you are considering a new direction and training - Okanagan College is your learning partner.

Continuing Studies and Corporate Training courses offer you options that have flexibility built right in. Many are shorter in duration, scheduled over a few days or weeks and giving you the chance to try something new. Others are available in different formats, online or in-person. Still more are hands-on and designed to provide you with access to industry professionals who offer the balance of their professional experience and academic instruction.

We all know that our world is changing rapidly, and that while there are many challenges, there is also an infinite number of exciting opportunities related to careers and work. However, for many people, the first steps to a new profession, job or lifestyle can seem overwhelming - and that’s where Okanagan College can help you set your path.

It’s with great excitement that we launch our Fall 2023 Continuing Studies and Corporate Training course calendar, under the title Be Inspired. As the job market continues to change and evolve, so too do our programs and learning options.

Career development courses are designed to help you master specific skills, while certificate programs offer the foundations and a broader range of training. New microcredential programs offered this year and in development offer a chance to explore an area of learning without requiring a long-term commitment, and general interest courses can supplement your resume or life experience for reasons both personal and professional.

Perhaps most valuably, any Continuing Studies course is an opportunity to meet new people, build connections and establish relationships that open up new opportunities - whether those opportunities are individual or have a more significant social and community impact.

LEARNING DELIVERY STYLES: HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Learning has never been easier. Here are the five delivery styles we offer to suit different learning needs. You’ll find these options listed in the Delivery Style section of each certificate listing.

FACE-TO-FACE: Learning occurs in person, on-site. Campus locations are listed when applicable.

BLENDED: A combination of face-to-face and any type of online delivery style.

ONLINE SYNCHRONOUS: You are required to join your instructor and other students in a virtual classroom at a specific time.

ONLINE ASYNCHRONOUS: Access course materials anytime. Learn on your own schedule, within a certain timeframe.

ONLINE HYBRID: A combination of online synchronous and asynchronous learning.

ONLINE LEARNING: WHAT YOU WILL NEED

• An internet-connected computer running Windows or macOS

• A Windows 11, 10 or 8 laptop or Chromebook (OS 88 or higher) that is capable of loading Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor for assessments

• Speakers or a headset

• A web browser with JavaScript and cookies enabled

• If the course includes online video-conferencing (Teams or Zoom), you will need a webcam with microphone

• For mobile devices, users should beware that not all course features are available on tablets or smartphones

LOCATION AND TIMES

ONLINE

Instructors provide guided content and direction for completion and are available to students with questions during class times and/or office hours. Some courses run in real-time with set schedules for online participation (synchronous learning), while others can be accessed anytime based on your schedule (asynchronous learning). In both cases, the more you engage, the greater the connections you will have with the learning, your instructor and the other students in your class.

Learning is delivered at one of the College’s campuses or a specified location. We follow all guidelines by WorkSafeBC, the Provincial Health Officer and Interior Health to ensure a safe learning environment.

Okanagan College is expanding its program offerings to include more ‘microcredential’ programs, short courses that are designed to get people trained quickly. Graduates receive a microcredential when they complete the course.

We currently offer five microcredentials: Introduction to Viticulture, Vineyard Establishment and Sustainability, Graphic Design Essentials, IT User Support, and Supportive Care Assistant.

More microcredentials are in development to be offered at OC in 2024 in areas including video games, micro brewing, cyber security, residential insulation, health and equity, diversity inclusion and social justice.

B.C. RESIDENTS CAN GET UP TO $3,500 TOWARD TUITION

The B.C. Government has announced the creation of the StrongerBC future skills grant to help British Columbians quickly get the skills they need to succeed in the jobs of today and the future.

Beginning this September, you could be eligible to receive up to $3,500 to help cover tuition fees for select short programs offered this fall.

The StrongerBC future skills grant is open to British Columbians aged 19 years or older - regardless of financial need - and covers up to $3,500 per person for eligible short-term skills training at public post-secondary institutions. Learners can choose from a growing list of programs to upgrade their skills and enhance their productivity, giving them access to well-paid, high opportunity occupations. Basic Accounting Certificate

The Basic Accounting Certificate is a flexible part-time program that provides a foundational introduction to accounting for those interested in entry-level accounting employment or accounting for their own business. Understand the accounting cycle for a service business and how to manage a general ledger, prepare financial statements, periodic adjustments and year-end books. Learn customer and vendor-tracking for a merchandising business, as well as inventory concepts, sales taxes, internal cash controls and payroll preparation.

Professional development opportunities: Obtain transfer credit into the Office Administration BUAD 111: Financial Accounting I course at Okanagan College, as well as credit for specific courses within the Canadian Payroll Association Certification.

Bookkeeping Certificate

Delivered online and on campus, the Bookkeeping Certificate builds understanding of the complete bookkeeping cycle. Gain employable financial accounting knowledge with advanced computerized accounting software and payroll administration skills. This certificate provides students with the knowledge and skills of bookkeeping, from how to set up a company, through the full year’s business cycle for computerized accounting systems. Students will learn a computerized accounting program, apply their knowledge to spreadsheets, plus gain an in-depth understanding of payroll administration. Courses may be taken individually.

Structured for the workplace, the Project Management Certificate offers instruction on the tools and techniques to manage every part of a project as well as product management software. Gain project management knowledge, strategies and tools that can be applied in the workplace. Offered in a blended learning format that provides a flexible and interactive learning environment, the certificate is designed for project managers at all levels.

Advanced GIS Certificate

The Advanced GIS Certificate program will introduce students to the essentials of using GIS (Geographic Information System) to create maps and edit and manage GIS data. Learning project management, students have the opportunity to work on various projects, showcasing data collection, GIS analysis, network datasets and 3D data. In addition, more advanced topics such as raster analysis, working with 3D data and network datasets will be covered. Students will also learn how to use GPS technologies to gather data, how to perform GIS analysis, complete an in-depth study of relational databases and how databases are used within a GIS.

Audio Engineering and Music Production Certificate

The Audio Engineering and Music Production Certificate program prepares individuals to work in a variety of technical positions such as recording arts, music, theatre, concerts, broadcasting, video and film. Students learn industry-standard skills involving the operation of both digital and analog recording, and the program also includes an element of music theory. The course content provides a foundation in the principles of hearing, sound, music, basic electronics, processing, signal flow, microphone techniques, mixing and mastering, live sound engineering, and reviews current industry standards. Students will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard recording and studio systems, and music and audio experience.

Employment opportunities: Graduates are prepared for technical roles such as audio engineering and music production for recording arts, music, theatre, concerts, broadcasting, Internet, gaming video and film. AutoCAD Skills Certificate

The AutoCAD Skills Certificate program introduces students to the tools and applications of AutoCAD software used in modern building design. Emphasis will be on learning the concepts and practical uses of the program as well as developing acceptable practices for electronic file management. Concentrating on two-dimensional drafting, this program teaches the use of AutoCAD using examples of drawings from various industries. Education Assistant Certificate

The Education Assistant Certificate program prepares learners to work as Education Assistants in schools as part of an educational team. Working under the instructional supervision of resource teachers, classroom teachers and school district administrators, Education Assistants support the learning and independence of children who benefit from additional assistance in meeting their educational goals. Learners are introduced to the organizational structure of schools and the role of Education Assistants in the classroom. Specific topics include general educational principles with particular attention to individualized instruction, co-operative learning and the importance of creating a positive learning environment. Learners develop and practice the skills necessary to implement modifications and adaptations of curriculum, and how to effectively manage needs and behaviours of the students they work with.

In the Esthetics and Nail Technology Certificate program, students gain the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in the field of professional esthetics and nail technology. Students learn the latest industry techniques for a wide range of treatments including spa level manicures and pedicures, artificial nail enhancements, skin care and facials, waxing essentials, aromatherapy, reflexology, relaxation and hot stone massage, body scrubs and wraps, eye lash and brow tinting and make-up foundations. Orthodontic Module

This course is offered to Certified Dental Assistants or Dental Hygienists as a professional development opportunity to those who wish to obtain the Orthodontic Module through the British Columbia College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP). Students will complete the theory component through an online platform with tutor support. This is followed by a theory examination and a weekend clinical held at the Okanagan College Kelowna campus. Provincial Violence Prevention

The Provincial Violence Prevention Curriculum (PVPC) was developed to fill a need for effective, recommended, and provincially recognized violence prevention (VP) education for all British Columbia health care workers across a range of public health care settings. The PVPC aligns with trauma informed practice, dementia care, and paediatric care principles.

Participants will learn the foundational knowledge regarding violence prevention in the series of e-learning modules. Participants attending the classroom sessions will apply that knowledge through activities to further reinforce and practice what they need to do to prevent and protect against workplace violence.

This is a face-to-face portion of the PVP curriculum. The E-learning modules must be completed before taking the in-class course. The BC Provincial Government provided a one-time grant which will reduce the cost of tuition for the PVPC to $45. This lowered tuition price will be in effect until March 2025.

BEVT 101 Battery Electric Vehicle Technology and Service

The Battery Electric Vehicle Technology and Service course prepares Automotive Service Technicians (AST) to safely diagnose and service high-voltage electric vehicles. Red Seal Certified AST, or registered ITA AST 3rd or 4th year apprentices, can build on their previous understanding of conventional vehicle systems to develop skills in preparation for the exponential increase in electric vehicles on our roads. This course has a six-hour online selfpaced module that must be completed in advance of the 30-hour classroom/shop training period.

Viticulture Certificate

The Viticulture Certificate program provides individuals with the skills and knowledge to manage a vineyard or seek employment in viticulture. Course work will emphasize the scientific principles underlying grape growing for the purpose of wine production, the various influences on grape quality, terminology, vineyard management including human resource and financial management, vineyard equipment operation and maintenance and safety.

Work integrated learning: 40 hours of work experience at a vineyard.

Wine Sales Certificate

The Wine Sales Certificate program provides individuals interested in employment in wine sales with an introduction to grape growing and winemaking, an understanding of legal regulations and standards within the industry, marketing and sales strategies, and knowledge of wine shop management and winery promotions. Coursework involves a variety of projects and field trips.

Winery Assistant Certificate

The Winery Assistant Certificate program provides students with the knowledge and practical skills to work alongside master winemakers. Similarities and differences between wine, cider, beer and spirits will be explored throughout the program with an emphasis on winemaking. The program includes a focus on scientific principles of production, influences on product quality, industry terminology, equipment operation and maintenance, harvest and crush, sanitation and safety, sensory evaluation, and marketing and sales. Students will also gain real-world experience through field trips and a practicum.

Chocolate and Wine Pairing

Satisfy your sweet tooth and indulge in the pairing of chocolate and BC wine. During this three-hour workshop, learners will delve into the art of pairing chocolate with a variety of B.C. wines, discovering the nuances of flavor and texture that create the perfect pairing. Learners will sample a range of artisanal chocolates and B.C. wines, exploring how the characteristics of each can complement and elevate the other, and gain an understanding of the science behind flavor pairings, as well as the cultural and historical context behind each pairing.

INFORMATION DISCREPANCIES

All program information, including course/program content, length, prerequisites, start/end dates, postponements and cancellations, is subject to change without notice. Okanagan College reserves the right to correct pricing or course details at time of registration. Note: many programs are offered at more than one campus. However, not all programs are offered at all campuses.

CONTINUING STUDIES REFUND POLICY:

NON-CERTIFICATE COURSE WITHDRAWAL

Refund requests must be made at least two business days (48 hours) prior to the course start date. No refunds are issued for requests received with less than two business days’ notice. Students may withdraw by phone, e-mail, mail or in person.

Non-certificate courses with tuition fees of $500 or more will have a five business day refund policy unless an exception is made by the Director

CERTIFICATE PROGRAM WITHDRAWAL

A non-refundable deposit of $200 is required to secure a seat in the program. Exception: a $600 non-refundable deposit is required for the Esthetics and Nail Technolgy Certificate program. Students must submit a completed CSCT Certificate Request to Withdraw. Please contact CS to request this form. For all certificate programs: to be eligible for a 100% refund of tuition paid (less the $200 non-refundable deposit) the Request to Withdraw must be received no later than 10 working days prior to start date of program. Refunds are not provided after above notification periods. Exceptions are made on compassionate grounds. In such cases a written request for refund, accompanied by appropriate documentation (i.e. medical), must be submitted prior to the end of the course or workshop.

Under no circumstances will refunds be granted for requests received after the end of a certificate program, course or workshop.

N.S.F. CHEQUES

There will be a charge of $25 for N.S.F. cheques.

CANADA TRAINING CREDIT

The Canada Training Credit is a new refundable tax credit to help Canadians with the cost of training fees. Eligible workers - those who have at least $10,000 in earnings for work (including maternity or parental leave benefits) and income below about $150,000 - between the ages of 25 and 64 would accumulate a credit balance at a rate of $250 per year, up to a lifetime training amount limit of $5,000. The credit could be used to claim a refundable tax credit for up to half of the eligible tuition and fees for taking a course or enrolling in a training program. An individual’s training amount limit would be included in the information the Canada Revenue Agency sends them each year.
