Welcome

Hello! Welcome to the Oxford International Junior Programmes 2021 brochure. Our team at Oxford International passionately believe that all students, from wherever in the world, should be given the opportunity to travel and learn English. In our opinion, it is one of the most life-enhancing experiences a student can have during their school years. Our core values have been at the heart of everything we have done over the last 30 years. We are proud of what we do and what we have achieved but we never stand still and are always looking to create and innovate with exciting new lessons and programmes. We love working with our agency partners and parents from all over the world and do so with honesty and integrity. Most importantly, our team always have the student’s safety, wellbeing and best interests at heart. Our aim is to ensure that every student who joins us on one of our fantastic programmes, whether it’s winter, spring, summer or all yearround, has the most enjoyable and amazing experience they possibly can. So please sit back, relax and take a look at all the amazing study opportunities Oxford International can offer you and your students in 2021. Thanks for reading!

Edited as of August 2020. We use UK and US English throughout this brochure because we operate in the UK and North America.

Welcome

It was the best experience of my life. I liked the lessons a lot because they were very interesting. I also loved the fact that there were lots of students from different countries and different cultures. I loved being here, I’ll never forget this experience!”

Study & Support

Study Hours Zigzag Programmes (summer only) Our UK Residential and Homestay programmes will run zigzag classes. This means that students will have some morning, some afternoon or even full-day lessons, mixed with weekday half and full day excursions. There may be some weekend lessons in some campuses too.

Study & Support

North American Residential and Homestay programmes may run on a zigzag according to arrival dates and student numbers. This will be advised upon booking. Our Winter Camp in January runs a programme of morning only lessons, but could be zigzagged should enrolled student numbers demand it.

We employ learning strategies that will help you make progress and reach your potential in using and understanding English. Accreditations Our Residential summer centres in the UK are accredited by the British Council. Our Homestay and Yearround groups programmes are also accredited by the British Council through our adult schools. Our Brighton School is accredited by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Our Canadian Year-Round group programmes are accredited by Languages Canada. Our San Diego programmes are accredited by The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).

Keypoints ¼ Minimum enrolment age: Please check this information next to each centre’s overview. ¼ Maximum class size: Centres organise classes with a maximum of 18 students in the UK, and an average of 16 students in North America. ¼ In-house designed teaching materials including level specific workbooks. ¼ Age-specific courses.

What can I expect? All students sit a written and oral placement test on their first day to ensure they are placed correctly in the most challenging class appropriate for their level. Every student receives an Oxford International course book with all learning materials for their language course. The materials encourage students to keep a clear record of their learning and achievements which they will feel proud to present to their parents and teachers when they return home.

Objectives Our approach The OI Junior Programmes create life enhancing experiences that help students worldwide develop their language as well as reasoning abilities. Teenagers today are fast thinkers who like to multi-task, they are curious and love expressing their opinions. Our syllabus aims to provide students with stimulating topics that will open their minds and provide them with meaningful speaking opportunities. We hope this will make students feel more confident in their ability to study and use English at the end of their programme.

Our materials The English for the 21st Century syllabus is driven by engaging topics which promote speaking and interaction. The syllabus integrates all language skills and provides students with exposure and practice of grammar points as well as lexical areas in real-world contexts. Each lesson will also provide students with an opportunity to reflect on their learning process and develop critical thinking skills whilst using English.

In addition to the core lessons, the syllabus will incorporate the following: ¼ Language in Use Lessons – focus on functional language and the use of English in everyday contexts ¼ Project – develops students’ creativity and collaboration skills ¼ Review – a chance to recycle and reuse new language

All teaching and learning materials for our courses are designed inhouse by our Oxford International academic team. We have over ten years’ experience of designing our own materials which are uniquely tailored to meet the needs of our students and programmes. We cater for a variety of age groups, so in addition to our standard teenage syllabus, we also provide teaching materials specifically tailored for young learners. The content and design of our syllabus is informed by student and teacher focus groups. We regularly revise our syllabus to ensure the next edition of course books are fresh and relevant to the students’ needs. We want to provide our students with a unique learning experience in a truly international context.

Our teachers Our teachers deliver relevant and engaging lessons which challenge students in a supportive way. Our aim is to raise the students’ confidence so they will feel more motivated and inspired to engage with their language studies back home.

Young Learners Programme Available at all UK Residential centres except Goldsmiths and Oxford Brookes.

Our Young Learners Programme is designed for students under 12 and consists of age-specific activities and lessons. Although the total of input hours is the same as the standard programme, lesson times are adjusted to allow for more frequent breaks, and the lessons use activity-based learning to help maintain focus and concentration. The lessons introduce the children to everyday spoken English through enjoyable games and activities, encouraging confident use of oral skills which are supported by grammar and vocabulary practice. This programme only runs if there are enough students of the appropriate age and/or level to participate. Otherwise, it is up to the discretion of the Director of Studies to assess and place all young learners into the most suitable classes considering their age and language ability.

Skills for the Workplace (PCTO ex ASL in Italy) Available in all centres, this programme is designed to prepare students for the world of work. Our world of work themed lessons include advice and support on CV writing, presentation skills and job interview techniques. Lessons will follow the same timing as our standard programme meaning groups can have students taking part in both programmes. Available for students aged 14 and over with a minimum English level of B1. Minimum of 14 students on the same teaching timetable is required to run the programme.

Safety & Welfare

Safety & Welfare Student welfare is our no.1 priority, and we have systems in place to make sure all students are supported, safe and protected during their stay with us. Each centre has at least one member of staff responsible for welfare – often more, depending on the size of school. The major responsibility of our welfare staff is the safety, security and enjoyment of everyone participating in our programmes.

Safety & Welfare

Welfare staff roles and responsibilities include: ¼ First aid

¼ Student support

¼ Allergies

¼ Catering

¼ Dietary requirements

¼ Accommodation

¼ Confidential advice

¼ Medical conditions

¼ Academic attendance inductions

¼ Local area information

The welfare team are all firstaid trained, alongside other members of our staff, and should be the first point of contact for any accidents or injuries which may occur during your group’s stay. Our admissions team need to know of any allergies, dietary requirements or medical conditions, so you should include this information on the booking form. They make sure the welfare team on campus are aware of all these requirements so those students needing special attention are recognised. Our welfare team on-site will also be able to help should anyone need to visit the local medical facilities. Our welfare teams are familiar with the local area and can show students and leaders where the nearest shops, banks, doctor’s surgeries and hospitals are located. They make sure any student who does not attend class is accounted for and, if they are sick, is cared for and safe. The induction of students and group leaders should include everything students need to know during their stay. Our welfare team lead this induction, making sure everyone knows who to speak to if they have a problem and where they can go should they need any help. Our teams are there to help in whatever way they can to make sure everyone is happy whilst staying with us. If any student or group leader becomes homesick or sad and needs someone to talk to, our welfare team are always prepared to listen. If a student has a problem with another student or anyone else, they can speak to our welfare team in absolute confidence, knowing they will find someone who will listen without judgement. In the centres where individual students have booked, there will

be a member of the welfare team called an Individuals Co-ordinator. They are responsible for looking after all the individual students, and meet with them daily to keep them informed of what’s happening. They also make sure the students attend all lessons punctually, and they lead all the individuals as a group on trips and visits.

Supervision Students are supervised both on campus and off campus when participating in lessons, activities and excursions, as well as during meal times and breaks. During other times, staff are available to help when required. There are clear policies for Activity Leaders and Group Leaders around supervision when off campus during scheduled trips and excursions to ensure the welfare and care of students. There is a 24-hour emergency number for all students, Group Leaders, parents and agent partners should they need to contact us. We also work closely with the security teams on campuses to ensure students are getting much needed rest through the night. More detailed information about our policies and procedures with regards to our safeguarding can be requested from our admissions team or via our website.

Teacher Training We offer a free 6-hour teaching training course at five of our summer locations. This course will be delivered by a qualified teacher trainer at Bedales School, Benenden School, Bradfield College, Royal Agricultural

/9

University and Sparsholt College. Its aim is to provide teachers with further professional development, help them teach language more creatively and expose them to the latest ESL techniques and methods. You also get a certificate from Oxford International if you complete the course!

Group Leader Programmes We know how hard group leaders work and how much they care for their students. So, we want them to have some time to themselves to recharge their batteries. That’s why we provide some special activities, just for the adults. It’s a fantastic opportunity to unwind, relax and even get to know our staff and other group leaders better. Example activities include: ¼ Afternoon tea parties / Coffee & Doughnuts ¼ Cheese & Wine / Beer & Pizza evenings ¼ Group Leader movie nights ¼ Academic presentations ¼ Campus specific tours ¼ Local visits ¼ Shopping trips

Safer recruitment / Student safeguarding ¼ Every member of our staff has a criminal record check before being employed by us. ¼ Every staff member is given safeguarding training to guarantee they have an in-depth knowledge of our child protection policies. ¼ Individuals Co-ordinators in centres with individual students. ¼ Designated welfare officer at every centre.

Activities

Activities Our students enjoy a range of fun, interesting activities and trips during their stay with us, mixing with students from around the world. At Oxford International, we carefully select Activity Leaders with specialist skills and experience to help run our programmes. We also make sure when planning the activity programmes that our students get the full benefit of their skills.

On-site Activities Our on-site activities are specially designed for the centres we use, making the best use of the facilities on offer and the location. From spooky night walks at Royal Holloway to beach BBQ’s in Vancouver, each campus will have a specifically designed ‘menu’ of activities. These will be sample activities that could run at the centre – the Activity Manager will plan and advertise the programme to suit the students. All of our activities are carefully planned, with guides for the activity leaders to incorporate the use of English. We know each student has differing tastes, so we have created five on-site activity categories.

Follow us on Instagram to see our students in action: @oijuniorprogrammes @oxfordjuniors_na

On-site activities include: ¼ Sports and high-energy activities for the energetic students, such as football and swimming ¼ Whole-campus activities such as discos and karaoke

¼ Specific workshops for the students such as Drama or Art classes ¼ Relaxing activities after full days of excursions, such as film night or chess club

¼ Academic themed activities ¼ Challenges for those who enjoy the competitive nature of activities, but not necessarily high-energy pursuits, including photo challenges or team challenges

Excursions One of the most exciting elements of our programmes are the excursions – these can be local visits, half-day excursions to a nearby town or city, full-day excursions a little further afield, or extended full-day trips to make the most of the time in the city. We design the excursions so they reflect the local area and distance to major cities. The programme usually begins with a local half-day visit. For example, students who are attending our programme at Christ’s Hospital School will have a tour of the local twn of Horsham whereas in San Diego, you’ll head straight downtown, during the first two days. This trip includes transport by coach or public transport. During an excursion, the students will have a walking tour – this is a tour around the town or city guided

by our Activity Leaders, who give fun information about where they are. Attraction admissions are also included in most excursions – these are often the highlights of the students’ stay.

Off-site Activities We also offer off-site activities that students can pay a small supplement for, such as bowling, cinema and paintballing trips. The off-site activities will be open to all students and those not electing to do these will have a full programme on-site. All campuses have an optional day – this is where the groups and students can tailor their programme. Students often visit a further attraction in the local city centre – or even go to theme parks such as Thorpe Park, located in the UK.

Summer

Summer During the summer months, we offer a range of centres across the UK, Canada and the USA hosting young people of many nationalities for a fun summer of English learning, events and activities. Our summer English language programmes for junior students combine academic schedules with engaging activities which make the most of each location, give students a diverse cultural experience, and help ensure they succeed in their studies all in a safe and secure environment. All our centres offer unique experiences and fantastic opportunities to meet new people and make new friends from all over the world. Each campus type has something different and special to offer - from the traditional boarding school experience to a stay at a modern city centre university campus, to full immersion with an English speaking family, we have a study experience which will suit all students.

Homestay / pg. 26 Living with a local family in their home has long been the most popular accommodation choice for students wanting an immersive English language experience. The opportunity to stay in someone’s home and live as part of their family can be a truly rewarding experience for both the student and the host. Usually located within easy reach of the centre by public

transport, homestay accommodation gives students the opportunity to be more responsible and, most importantly, independent. Using public transport on a daily basis and interactions with the host family help students develop their vocabulary in many different ways. If you’re looking for a real taste of local life then look no further than a homestay.

Boarding Schools / pg. 34 Our four boarding school campuses in the south of England combine the wonderful historic reputations of long established schools with fantastic, modern facilities. From sleeping in traditional boarding house accommodation to having lessons in state-of-the-art classrooms, our boarding school campuses offer the most English of study camp experiences. All this combined with amazing, countryside locations, top quality food and all the sports facilities you could want, make for the perfect stay for students of all ages.

Universities / pg. 44 Our university campus programmes offer students the chance to live and study at famous universities in the UK and North America. From small, city centre locations to vast campuses covering hundreds of acres, our university campus programmes offer an all inclusive programme for a wide age range of students. Students get to live in the university accommodation, study in the university classrooms and eat in the university canteen, whilst also enjoying on-site sports and social facilities. What better way to inspire them into higher education on their return to their home country or even onwards to a study abroad programme?

If you have an idea of an industry or subject that you’d like to explore, we’d love to create a bespoke course alongside you.

English + Programmes are an excellent opportunity for cross subject learning combining General English language tuition and subject specific learning either in the classroom or on excursion. Students will spend the mornings improving their English in one of our vibrant schools in Brighton, London, Oxford, Vancouver, Toronto or San Diego.

English+ programme Each week, they will study 15 hours of General English. This means the programme is accessible to most students. However, our teachers will be able to incorporate some subject specific

¼ vocabulary areas that benefit the students during their afternoon visits ¼ reflection tasks and activities linked to their visits that will allow students to develop their critical thinking skills ¼ collaborative projects in English linked to the chosen subject Students will be taught in closed groups of maximum 18 students per class. Please note that some of our English+ programmes have a recommended age range and a recommended level. In the afternoons, students will gain a deeper understanding of their chosen subject through a series of themed visits and tours. Some of these tours are very interactive and provide students with a hands-on learning opportunity. Other visits or excursions will allow students to explore the subject matter in a more individual way thus making them more independent learners. In any case, we aim to provide a variety

of engaging activities that will benefit all types of learners. After an action packed day, students will have the evenings to relax at their accommodation, reflect on the day and share new insights and experiences. For a full list of English Plus courses we offer in the UK and North America, please contact your regional Oxford International representative or the Juniors Admissions team. We are more than happy to work with partners to create new programmes so please just ask if you have a group with a specific interest.
