Pastor’s Page Advent – More than just a countdown

The theme of Advent has shifted somewhat in recent decades more towards hope and anticipation, thus the move to deep blue as the liturgical color (representing the color of the sky just before dawn), but the lectionary readings retain this emphasis on spiritual preparation.

These increasingly popular secular “Advent” calendars are nothing but excuses for mindless, soulless consumption. They nihilistically count down to nothing.

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a wise heart.

kay, this is getting ridiculous. Advent calendars are everywhere now, and almost none of them have anything to do with preparing spiritually to celebrate the incarnation of our Lord.

Not content to capitalize on Christmas, corporations have now begun colonizing the season of Advent, using it as an opportunity to sell all kinds of “countdown calendars” without any reference to what is actually being celebrated at the end of it all. There are now “Advent” calendars (sarcastic scare quotes very much intended) for just about every niche market. Williams Sonoma is selling a Dolly Parton “Advent” calendar with gourmet chocolates behind each window.

Now I love Dolly as much as anyone.

She’s fan-tastic. She’s a national treasure.

But what in the world does she have to do with Advent? Advent is about Jesus, not Jolene.

The real Advent is so much better! I know it sounds way more fun to eat Dolly Parton-inspired chocolates in a bubble bath, but the spiritual disciplines of Advent pay much bigger dividends in the long run. By spending the weeks before Christmas engaging in spiritual preparation rather than self-indulgence, the Christmas season becomes so much more meaningful. Attending worship services each Sunday in Advent helps keep our focus on preparing for Christ’s coming, beginning with the first Sunday of Advent’s apocalyptic readings on Christ’s coming again, continuing with two Sundays of John the Baptist’s call to prepare, followed by the beautiful greeting between Mary and Elizabeth and their unborn babies on the last Sunday of the season. Gathering on Wednesdays for midweek services helps keep one’s focus on Christ in what can be a busy and emotionally fraught time of year. Our humble soup suppers remind us of simple joys and the blessing of Christian fellowship. Advent wreaths can be used in the home with candles lit each week accompanied by devotions and prayer. And real Advent calendars – the ones that point to Jesus, the ones with little windows that open to scripture readings or prayers or Christian images – can help count the days in a way that leads to wisdom and peace rather than empty hearts and empty wallets.

You can also buy an “Advent” calendar based on the hit 90s sitcom Friends, with a different showrelated trinket for each day. It promises to “encourage you to celebrate the holidays with friends along with Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe.” Ross and Rachel were quite the couple, I’ll grant you that, but what about Mary and Joseph?

The Body Shop is selling a humdinger of an “Advent” calendar for $79 (!) full of lotions, facial cleanses, and bubble baths. The product description says: “It’s packed with lots of little head-to-toe treats for keeping you and that beautiful body pampered all season.” Jesus was laid in a feeding trough with the stench of manure hanging heavy in the air, but by all means prepare for his coming by pampering yourself all season long.

Advent begins on Sunday, November 28. Barring another wave of COVID-19, we are planning on offering the full slate of Advent programming here at OHLC. I would encourage you to begin planning now for how you will observe this holy season. As the world tries to lure you into several weeks of self-indulgence, even using the word “Advent” to do so, plan on taking up the true practices of Advent: worship, prayer, spiritual preparation. It isn’t that all whimsy or Christmas fun needs to be strictly banned from every Christian home until December 25, but the real Advent, well-kept, imbues our countdown with holy purpose, and keeps us from forgetting what it is we are celebrating at the end of it all.

It is just too easy to make fun of these so-called Advent calendars, and I’ve probably had a little too much fun doing so, but it points to a widespread and serious misunderstanding of the purpose of the season. In the Christian church, Advent has traditionally been a “little Lent,” a season of self-examination and repentance and spiritual discipline in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s birth. Fall adult education THE SMALL CATECHISM Martin Luther’s Guide to Everyday Faith t isn’t too late to join us for our study of the Small Catechism! While there is an intentional flow to how the Catechism is arranged, each session can be beneficial to anyone who might want to drop in. We meet Sunday mornings in the church library from 9:15-10:15, with the same class being offered again on Tuesday nights at 7 PM via Zoom. (Please note that Pastor Spencer will be out of town on November 7, and so the material that week will only be taught on Tuesday night, November 9.)

Confirmation class meets November 14

Every family attending will receive a special Chrismon-themed Advent devotional.

Confirmation class will meet from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, November 14 for dinner, a rousing game of CateQuizm, and prayer. Please bring a brown bag dinner. At least one parent/ guardian is expected to attend with their student.

Mark your calendars and be sure and complete sessions 4-6 in your workbooks before we gather!

New chrismons are coming to OHLC!

Coming in December: Learning and sharing the Christmas story

M

emorial funds from several departed saints have been used to purchase new chrismons for OHLC’s Christmas trees.

The word chrismon comes from the words Christ and monogram.

Chrismons were first developed by Frances Kipps Spencer (no kidding!) in 1957 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia. She sought to take the ancient Christian symbols found in paraments, vestments, and stained glass, and use them to decorate the sanctuary Christmas tree. The practice has since been adopted by many Christian denominations around the world. Many of OHLC’s original chrismons are in very poor shape and beyond repair. We will keep a handful of the originals and intersperse them with the new ones. Old and new will be blended together to point us to Christ!

Through a generous donation from OHLC’s Lydia Circle, we have purchased 150 copies of a little book called Is Christmas Unbelievable? by Rebecca McLaughlin. These books will be given out to OHLC house-holds with a two-fold mission.

First, you are encouraged to read it! This little book can be read in a sitting and will help you learn or relearn some basic teachings about the birth of Jesus and its significance. This is important for your own faith, and also gives you the language to address the questions and doubts of non-Christian friends and neighbors.

Second, after you have read it you will be invited to give the book away! We will have our church information on a sticker on the inside cover, as well as an invitation to our Sunday and Christmastime worship services. Give it to an unchurched friend, a doubting family member, an inactive church member who seems to have fallen away from faith, your barista, your dentist, whomever! Let’s prepare for Christmas by boning up on the Christmas story, and then by flooding Oak Harbor with this fantastic little book and an invitation to “come and see!”

Midweek Advent services & soup suppers begin Wednesday, December 1:

“O CHRISMON TREE” Beginning Wednesday, December 1, we will be gathering in the sanctuary for midweek Advent services at noon and 6:00 PM, with simple meals of soup and bread held afterwards in the fellowship hall.

The theme for our services will be O Chrismon Tree. Each week we will look at two chrismons and consider how these symbols point us to Christ.

Please sign up to bring soup and/or bread using the sign-up sheets in the narthex. Midweek services and soup suppers will continue on Wednesdays through December 22.

Eucharistic Ministers sought Do you like to visit with people? Are you in worship regularly? Would you like to take the Lord’s Supper we share in worship out to those who can’t be with us on Sunday mornings? We could use you as a Eucharistic Minister!

A training session will be held on Sunday, November 21, at noon in the church library. A light lunch will be provided. Please RSVP by calling the church office or via the Connection Card in your Sunday bulletin.

All Saints luminaria walk coming November 7

Surviving the Holidays , a seminar on Saturday, Nov. 13, offers help and hope as you navigate the Christmas season, 10 AM to noon online or in person at Oak Harbor Church of the Nazarene, 1100 W Whidbey Avenue (the block immediately south of OHLC).

T

o honor and remember those we have lost, we will have a walkthrough luminaria for All Saints Day on Sunday, Nov. 7, 6:00 to 8:00 PM. You are invited to decorate up to three paper bags in remembrance of those you have lost recently and not so recently.

The white bags will be lit from within and arranged around the church property for a walk-through viewing on All Saints Day. You can park and walk the circle (all in the same direction) and take photos if you wish. The walk will include a projected slideshow of some of the saints we are remembering.

This seminar by Grief Share is especially designed for people who are grieving a loved one’s death and wondering how to survive the weeks surrounding Thanksgiving and Christmas. Cost is $5, which includes the survival guide.

Bags are available for pick up during office hours, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday- Friday, and at in-person Sunday services. Please drop off your decorated bags in the designated box in the narthex.

ctober was full of fun! We learned about the letters O, B, X and P. With the letter O we learned about the color orange, ovals and owls. We decorated our classroom with paper plate owls, and easel-painted large orange ovals or circles.

The letter B brought us brown bats, bones and black spiders. Ms. Debbie, our Science Lady, came in for her first visit of the school year and we learned about how our bones, skin and muscles hold us together and help us move. X is for X-ray and we learned more about how our bones take the shape of a skeleton and we ended our discussion with making paper skeletons for the classroom bulletin board.

he Coupeville Book Group meets Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7:00 PM via Zoom. Jean Congdon will lead the group in discussing the book Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat. Everyone is welcome to join in the discussion. For more information, e-mail Gaye Rodriguey at gaye@tobysuds.com.

Our field trip for the month was to Case Farms, where Mr. & Mrs. Pumpkin were so happy to see us. We were able to see all their farm animals and helped them harvest some pumpkins for us to take home to our families.

We talked about the letter P, and later on we turned our orange ovals and circles into pumpkins with jack-o-lantern faces!

On the eve of Claire Limyè Lanmè’s seventh birthday, her father makes a very difficult decision. But before it can be carried out, Claire goes missing from their small Haitian seaside town. We reintroduced our open house this school year, but had to limit the number of families that could be present at one time, so we offered time slots for parents to come tour the classroom, meet Luke the rabbit, and see what the children have been working on since school started. Although different from years past, we are so thankful that we’re still able to offer this visiting opportunity for our preschool families.

October also means our annual PJ Party! We showed up to school in our jammies and slippers, and we played games, sang songs, and just had lots of fun overall.

Compassion Ministry

Roadside clean-up planned for November 13 The next Roadside Clean-up event will be Saturday, November 13. Jeff Margraf, project coordinator, has checked our adopted 2mile stretch of Highway 20 north of Oak Harbor and decided it needs a little OHLC community assistance. He can’t guarantee the weather, but it’s been over four months since our last pick-up and volunteers are needed, rain or shine.

Help House: feeding those in need for over 44 years

O

ur ministry focus for the month of November is the North Whidbey Help House, a community food bank since 1977. Help House provides assistance to those in need in our community in an impartial and dignified manner by providing emergency/supplemental food, Salvation Army prescription medicine vouchers, and telephone health and welfare checkups via their tele-care program. They work with other human services agencies in our communities to ensure that they are prepared to offer the best assistance possible and assist wherever possible in not only improving lifestyles but striving towards independence from the need for assistance.

Members of our congregation regularly contribute nonperishable food, collected in the narthex. Monetary donations are also accepted as this program is solely community-funded and receives no government funding.

On November 14 Jean Wieman, executive director, will speak during our Sunday worship services.

In this time of harvest and our abundance, please join in supporting the Help House.

By order of the State of Washington, all participants must be fully vaccinated and will be required to present proof of CV-19 vaccination prior to participation. For those with kids in high school, this is a good opportunity to get 2 to 3 hours of volunteer time, which can count towards graduation volunteer requirements. Also per the State rules, the minimum age is 15 (sorry, for any younger tykes who might be interested).

Meet at church at 8:30 AM! Hard hats, reflective vests and trash bags are provided. If you plan to participate, make a note on a Connection Card in your Sunday bulletin or contact Jeff, jeffamargraf@aol.com.

Help House sends a seasonal appeal Interested in helping Help House in a specific way this holiday season? Jean T. Wieman, executive director of North Whidbey Help House, sent out a letter detailing their plans for food ‘baskets’ for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. They don’t know what to expect this time around, but Jean noted in past years they’ve averaged 325 baskets for each holiday. Here, she notes, are ways you could help: Donate food items, make monetary donations to help us in purchasing items (we purchase the turkeys, celery, margarine and stuffing as well as any other items that haven’t been donated for the holiday meals), or bring an entire holiday food basket to Help House for us to distribute. Another way is to “adopt” a family. Help House will provide you with the name of a family or families and then you’d be responsible for purchasing the food and delivering it to them.

Kits and quilts to be shipped for Lutheran World Relief After display in the sanctuary on Sunday, Oct. 31, quilts made by our Blanket Workshop group will be packed up for shipment. We’ll also be sending along the school kits assembled earlier in October by our Sunday School classes from all those notebooks, pencils, scissors, and other school supplies donated by our very generous congregation in September.

The fall ingathering for Western Washington is November 5&6 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, Seattle. Our thanks to Mike Dilley who is making the delivery for us again this year! We’ll include details about our shipment in next month’s newsletter.

Loving our neighbors Hope for the Holidays 2021

A

re you thinking about the Christmas season yet? Maybe you’ve even shopped a bit. Do you send cards? One community is already preparing to bring hope to our hurting world.

For the last six years Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) has sponsored a program called Hope for Holidays. This program sends messages of hope to our immigrant neighbors to remind them that they are not forgotten during the holiday season.

HOPE is on the horizon!

Save the date for HOPE, a PLU Christmas Concert. Tickets are available online only, and go on sale at 10 AM on Monday, November 1.

PLU’s Choir of the West, University Chorale, and University Symphony Orchestra present this beloved holiday tradition in the Northwest. This year’s program includes works by Howard Darke, Brian Galante, Richard Nance and others, mixing with traditional carols and seasonal favorites in a celebration of hope and renewal in this joyful season.

How can you act to bring this hope? You can write and decorate holiday cards in English and Spanish. The cards with your message of hope and encouragement may be decorated with a picture, a favorite poem or quote or a Bible verse. To personalize the card even more, LIRS is asking that cards be signed with your first name only and your city and state. The last step will be to leave the cards (without envelopes) in the church office by Sunday, November 28. I will then send all the cards in one envelope to the nearest LIRS Partner Hub to be distributed to our immigrant friends and neighbors.
