enlighten, and make holy. This summary gives us an understanding of the Spirit which is at once more down-to-earth and more biblical than anything either the enthusiasts or the mystics have to offer on the subject.

A Holy Spirit for the rest of us

“I believe that by my own reason or strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him, but instead the Holy Spirit has called me through the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, made me holy and kept me in the true faith, just as he calls, gathers, enlightens, and makes holy the whole Christian church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one common, true faith.”

Martin Luther, The Small Catechism

According to the catechism, the Spirit is not something we put on display with dramatic spiritual feelings in full view. Instead, the Holy Spirit is what God sends to call us together as the church. Once gathered, the Holy Spirit goes to work – often in simple, quiet ways – to move our hearts to faith in Jesus Christ. This faith may or may not be accompanied by a dramatic experience observable to others. Being an extrovert is not a requirement of salvation.

“We’ve got spirit, yes we do! We’ve got spirit, how ‘bout YOU?” e’ve all probably heard cheerleaders or pep clubs lead this or a similar refrain at one time or another. In this context the word “spirit” refers to a high level of enthusiasm marked by lots of noise, demonstrative emotion, and lifting one’s hands in the air like you just don’t care. Here “spirit” is understood as something we put on display as a sign of our commitment and passion for a school or a team.

Luther’s summary also helps us to see that the Spirit is not something only encountered in the chant-induced trances of monks or mystics. The Spirit is just as much at work through a Sunday School teacher using sock puppets to tell the story of the Prodigal Son to a bunch of restless rug rats. Whenever and however the gospel is proclaimed, the Spirit is at work to enlighten God’s people, making them holy through the grace of Christ Jesus. There is certainly an element of mystery to the Holy Spirit, but this Spirit is also predictably and reliably encountered again and again through the simple means of grace delivered through the Word, through the sacraments, and through Christian fellowship.

As the festival of Pentecost approaches, let us not be misled by prescribed emotional experiences or deceived by overly esoteric assumptions about the Holy Spirit. Instead, may we see the Spirit at work among us in the down-to-earth realities of our life together here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church as we are called into community with one another, gathered around Word and sacrament, enlightened by the gifts of Christ, and made holy by grace received and grace shared. We also commonly encounter the word “spirit” in the context of the supernatural. We can think of Charles Dickens’ three spirits who visited Scrooge, or the “spirits” supposedly consulted by mediums or fortune tellers. These spirits are ethereal, mysterious, and other-worldly.

These popular usages of the word “spirit” have influenced how we think about spirituality, and have certainly impacted how many people understand the person and work of the Holy Spirit. The former understanding of the word “spirit” has shaped some to believe that “having the Holy Spirit” is equivalent to having an emotional reaction which can be seen and heard. According to this understanding, the Spirit is observable and even quantifiable in a person depending on the level of emotion on display. The latter understanding of the word “spirit” has brought many to believe that the Holy Spirit is such an esoteric, mystical fellow that he can only be encountered by spiritual aficionados. Here the Spirit is so otherworldly that it is of little worldly good to average, everyday people.

Synod Assembly meets May 15-16

On Pentecost Sunday (May 24 this year) we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. As this festival Sunday approaches it is a good time to clarify what we as Lutheran Christians believe about the Holy Spirit. In summarizing what the Scriptures teach about the Holy Spirit, Martin Luther explained in his Small Catechism (quoted above) that the Holy Spirit’s proper work is to call, gather,

Growing & Learning

Grads to be recognized on June 7 Join us as we celebrate our high school graduates during worship on Sunday, June 7. Juliet Aspery, Alexander Famellos, Michaela Geist, Aaron Kelley, Haley Lundstrom, and Kayla Nagel will all be invited to come forward to receive an OHLC-made quillow (a quilt that folds into a pillow), as well as a blessing and our prayers as they mark this milestone.

Congratulations to Rebecca Ogren Miller, graduating cum laude from Pacific Lutheran University’s class of 2015 on May 23! Becky is receiving a BA in Elementary Education, with an endorsement in Special Education.

The Gospel of John: A Visual Study Our Sunday morning study of John’s gospel concludes in May. We’ll take a couple of weeks off for other events (see schedule below), before wrapping up this study with two sessions on the resurrection.

The VBS team and the men of OHLC (see the note on page 7) will be hosting this event. Please join us for a fantastic breakfast in honor of all the mothers of OHLC. There will be a free-will offering to support our Vacation Bible School this summer.

Every first Sunday in June, members of the Moses clan gather for an annual reunion at a sprawling hundred-acre farm in Arkansas. And every year, Samuel Lake, a vibrant and committed young preacher, brings his beloved wife, Willadee Moses, and their three children back for the festivities.

In the midst of it all, Samuel and Willadee’s outspoken eleven-year-old daughter, Swan, is a bright light. Her high spirits and fearlessness have alternately seduced and bedeviled three generations of the family. But just as the reunion is getting under way, tragedy strikes, jolting the family to their core and setting the stage for a summer of crisis and profound change.

Pentecost Sunday (May 24) will be three times as special this year as we welcome Ben & Emily Richards’ triplets, Anna, Elizabeth, and Matthew, as brothers and sisters in Christ through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Lynne and Eric Ogren will be among the godparents. It will be a day for rejoicing in the presence of the Holy Spirit, who may need to bring some extra water for this one!

Best wishes for much happiness to Dutch Strehle and Donna Haines, who were married on March 7 at Dutch’s home on Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor! There’s a newspaper photo of the happy couple on the ‘OHLC in the News’ bulletin board in the hallway near the offices.

Firewood available The remaining timber felled in our recent forestry management project is available to members of the congregation for firewood. It needs to be removed carefully and as soon as possible, because the replacement tree-planting phase has already begun. The firewood will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact Ron Muzzall or Mark Needler if you are interested, and check in with the church office before you start loading up.

Handwork Group Heart & Hand handwork group meets at 9:30 AM in the comfortable chairs of the prayer room on Friday, May 17. Bring your own projects or help work on baptismal banners or sweaters and hats for baby care kits for Lutheran World Relief.

pril has been an exciting month for His Kids! We got things kicked off by being OHLC’s ministry focus for the month, and we hope you had a chance to take a look at the bulletin board display in the narthex. A special thank you to Melissa Johnson, preschool committee member, preschool mom and a wonderful blessing, who helped us make it look amazing with her creative spirit!

Before having some time off for spring break, our preschoolers began the month with an early Easter celebration and a party in each class.

When they returned from break, it was back to learning about April showers bringing May flowers, and the study of things changing right before our eyes, such as seeds turning into flowers or vegetables, and caterpillars changing into butterflies. We also studied insects, and how they are helpful in many ways to us and to our feathered friends . . . and speaking of which, thank you to Martha Ellis for coming into the classroom and sharing her knowledge about the different types of local birds.

His Kids Preschool looks ahead for the coming school year!

egistration continues for the 2015-2016 school year of His Kids Preschool, a ministry of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Children must be at least 3 years old by Aug. 31, 2015.

Available classes are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 9:00-11:30 AM Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 12:30-3:00 PM Thursday, Friday, 9:00-11:30 AM Pre-K Readiness, Thursday, Friday, 12:30-3:00 PM, open to children registered in a 3-day class and who will be turning 5 during the school year

Our field trip for April was to Camp Casey and the Sealab. This is a wonderful, fun-filled, informative field trip that we try to schedule every spring for the children and our parent volunteers who drive them to Coupeville. Mr. Keith, who has been the host for many years there, entertains the children by squirting them with a sea cucumber and letting them explore by touching some of the sea creatures on display in a small tidal pool area.

Tuition is $140 per month for the 3-day classes and $95 per month for the 2-day (a 5-day program adds up to $235 per month). There are a pair of fees due at the time of registering ($50 nonrefundable registration fee + $50 tuition fee that is applied to the final month’s tuition.). Class size is limited to 16 children each, 15 in the Pre-K Readiness class. Further information is available in the church office or via the OHLC website, www.oakharborlutheran.org .

As a grand finale for our ministry focus, we celebrated Preschool Sunday, honoring the students of His Kids and the parents who support our program! We invited our preschool families to worship with us at our 10:30 service, and the children sang a couple of their chapel songs with Pastor Spencer (with great enthusiasm!) for the congregation. We celebrated with cake, punch and other goodies in the fellowship hall after the service. We finished the day with a raffle drawing for the quilt that our own lead teacher, Elva McArthur, donated her time, talent and materials to make (Thank you very much, Miss Elva!!). Thank you to all who bought the raffle tickets to make this successful;

Take a closer look at Camp Lutherwood!

amp Lutherwood near Bellingham is the special Ministry of the Month for May. Please go to http://www.camplutherwood.org/ to see the multitude of camps, facility rentals and activities provided throughout the year. Summer camp registration is in full swing with some of the more popular camps filling fast, like H2O Camp (two new ski boats are being purchased for the summer) and Outdoor Adventure Program (put your hiking boots on). There are a variety of programs for a variety of ages. No one is too old for camp… and who passes on a s’more?! C’mon!!

Thank you to Dave, Evan, Tom, Paul, Marge, and Kathy for picking up the 12 bags of trash along OHLC’s adopted 2 miles of Highway 20 on Saturday, April 11. Mark your calendars; we’ll do it again in July.

Through a special donation by a friend of the congregation, $1,300 is available to help support scholarships to attend and the “Old Dogs” are also offering four $150 scholarships for this summer. That is as good as it gets. All we need are kids who want to have fun. As a congregational goal, we should try to send at least 10 kids this year, and hopefully we can have a few retreats or getaway rentals by families.

Using Camp Lutherwood is the best way to support this Ministry. There are wonderful opportunities to develop our youth in the Christian faith through fellowship and in the midst of God’s creation.

Oak Harbor Pregnancy Care Clinic Baby Bottle Boomerang The Pregnancy Care Clinic (PCC) in Oak Harbor is a ministry providing care and support for women and men experiencing unexpected pregnancies. OHLC member Morrie Parker serves on the board of the PCC. This year, we are once again participating in their community-wide fundraiser, the Baby Bottle Boomerang. Those interested in donating to our local PCC may pick up a PCC baby bottle in our narthex on Mother’s Day (May 10). Take it home. Fill it with change, cash, and/or a check, and return it on (or by) Father’s Day (June 14).

Also, for those who want to support the camp in another way , there will be a Join Hands Day on Saturday, May 2, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This is an opportunity to come help prepare for the summer campers by doing a multitude of housecleaning and groundskeeping activities. Many hands make light work. See you there!

Project turns grocery bags into sleeping mats Thank you very much for all the plastic shopping bags you bring to church for this project! I am grateful for each and every one, so please continue to leave them in the box in the narthex (over near the coat rack and just behind the barrel for Help House) I have discovered that I can only make one mat every two weeks so I need more people with size M crochet hooks and time to invest.

Learn about lifesaving on May 31 There will be a training session for use of OHLC’s defibrillator on Sunday, May 31, in the library following the 10:30 AM service, and under the guidance of Dr. Skip Lycksell and OHLC’s parish nurse, Abby Chromy.

Installation of the Archbishop In a solemn ceremony, Dietrich Brauer was consecrated as archbishop of the ELCER in the Sts. Peter and Paul’s cathedral of Moscow on February 8. He was previously elected by the general synod of ELCER in September. Many archbishops, guests and envoys, e.g. from the MartinLuther-Bund or the Lutheran World Convention from all over Europe came to take part in that event. Guests from each deanery of the ELCER were in Moscow, too. The archbishop of Estonia Viilma implemented the installation. Following this, greetings were conveyed by envoys of the Russian Orthodox church and the government. We wish our archbishop much success and God’s blessing.
