Another project we’re pursuing is the creation and installation of a new sign on the corner of Heller Street and NW 2nd Avenue.

Our current sign is showing its age.

We’ve been consulting with signage experts, and have begun to explore some exciting possibilities for replacement. We hope to run electricity out to a new sign in order to have it lit up, making it brightly visible to passersby when it is dark – which it is much of the time here on Whidbey Island in the winter! Could God be at work in wood, paint, and light bulbs to make neighbors and newcomers more aware of our church?

God works through ordinary, earthly water to claim us as his children in the sacrament of Holy Baptism, giving us life, forgiveness, and salvation. God works through ordinary, earthly bread and wine to strengthen us in faith, renew us in Christ’s forgiveness, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come. God works through ordinary, earthly words – written, spoken, or sung – to proclaim his word of law and gospel to us. God works through ordinary earthly human beings, “earthen vessels” St. Paul calls us, to provide a community in which faith can be nurtured and care can be offered in Christ’s name. Water. Bread and wine. Words. People. Pretty ordinary, earthly stuff. And yet, God gives extraordinary, spiritual gifts through each of them.

The third major project this campaign will fund is a gradual overhaul of the audio/visual equipment in our sanctuary. Some of this work has already begun with the recent addition of a mounted camera to record sermons for posting on our website. Future needs include replacing our projectors. Ours have seen better days, and newer models produce much sharper images and text which will be easier for people to read. We have pretty solid audio equipment, but it is capable of much crisper sound quality with some expert rewiring and a professional “tuning” of the room. We have also been exploring better options for hearing assistance technology. Could God be at work in glass lenses and wires and electricity to make our worship services more vivid and easier to hear?

This year we are beginning a capital campaign to raise funds for several much-needed projects here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. The campaign will be officially launched at our semi-annual meeting on January 24, after which members will be receiving a quarterly mailing with updates on our progress and invitations to give. Various fundraising events will be held throughout the year as well. Half of all money brought in will go to pay down our remaining debt incurred from the installation of our new fire suppression system, and the rest will go towards important new projects around our church. As this campaign unfolds, I hope you will think of our efforts together not merely as a collection of mundane maintenance projects. Instead, I hope you will see it as investing in God’s work at OHLC. I hope you will think about how God can work through ordinary earthly means such as concrete, wood, plastic, and glass to give extraordinary spiritual gifts.

There will be other projects too, including the painting of the sanctuary ceiling, new LED lighting in our sanctuary and parking lot, and replacing the roof on the Boy Scout garage. These are ordinary, earthly needs, but their completion helps create the conditions in which God’s extraordinary spiritual work is done. All of these projects call for a major investment by us, the members of OHLC. I hope you will see this as an investment in God’s work among us, and give generously and joyfully in the months ahead!

One project on the docket is the re-paving of our parking lot.

Many have noted the heaving in our asphalt which is creating uneven ground. This is a dangerous situation for some of our older members, who are finding it increasingly difficult to make their way into our sanctuary. After all the effort made designing our facilities to be accessible, it would be a shame if our parking lot itself became a barrier.

Could God be at work in a fresh, smooth layer of asphalt, making it safer and easier for our friends to enter our church? Didn’t we recently hear John the Baptist calling us to “fill every valley, make every hill low, and every crooked path straight?”

Advent wrap-up: Thank you to all who helped with the Advent soup suppers, once again proving that OHLC is a congregation of good cooks and cheerful helpers with set-up and cleanup. Special thanks to Mary Brock who coordinated the evening of December 9 as a God’s Work; Our Hands service project with our Sunday School children.

Mark your calendar

January 17: New Member Class Anyone interested in becoming a member of OHLC is encouraged to come learn more about our church! Seekers are welcome – there is no obligation to join. We’ll meet in the library from 12:00 to 2:00 PM, and lunch will be provided.

January 6: All ages Epiphany bonfire Celebrate Jesus, the light of the world, with the whole family as we gather at our fire pit (behind the education wing) for an Epiphany bonfire! We’ll have chili for dinner, and s’mores and hot chocolate for dessert. Our evening will conclude with a brief time of song and prayer for a blessed new year. Our party will be held on Wednesday, January 6 (the actual date for Epiphany) from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Please sign up on an opportunity form or RSVP to Pastor Spencer or the church office so we know how much food we’ll need!

January 24: Semi-annual congregational meeting & potluck We will convene our semi-annual meeting at noon on Sunday, Jan. 24. All voting members of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church are encouraged to attend as we hear reports, consider our congregational budget for 2016, conduct elections (see below for open positions), and launch a new capital campaign. A potluck will follow, so plan on bringing a dish to share as we celebrate the beginning of a new year of ministry! An agenda for the meeting will be available on the 17th.

January 10: Sunday morning adult class begins new series A new 5-session class is beginning on January 10 that will focus on prayer. We’ll be using a video curriculum featuring beloved Christian author Philip Yancey, along with Bible study and discussion. Come deepen your understanding and practice of prayer!

OHLC candidates sought Are you interested in serving God in a new way in the new year ahead? We are seeking candidates for the following positions for election at the January 24th semi-annual meeting: - Voting Members (3) to the 2016 Northwest Washington Synod Assembly, held on May 20-21 in Everett - Delegates (2) to Josephine Home, our Lutheran nursing home/care facility in Stanwood - Delegates (2) to Lutherwood, our camp and retreat center in Bellingham If you have any questions about these opportunities, don’t hesitate to ask Pastor Spencer. Nominations are currently being accepted via the Opportunity Form.

January 14: Coaches & Council potluck All ministry coaches and council members are encouraged to attend our next combined meeting and potluck on Thursday, January 14, beginning at 5:30 PM. Please bring a dish to share. Council, please note we will be having our regular meeting that night (the second Thursday of the month) at 7:00.

Join us for an OHLC Movie Night on Friday, Jan. 15, for a showing of UP: Retired balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, is ready for his last chance at high-flying excitement. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, Carl sets off to the lost world of his childhood dreams... We’ll start at 5:30 PM in Herrigstad Hall. Grilled hotdogs will be provided; please bring a side dish to share.

Our winter clean-up has been rescheduled to Saturday, Jan. 30!

Volunteers must be at least 15 years old – please sign up in the narthex or make a note on an opportunity form in the Sunday bulletin. Plan to meet at the church at 8:30AM to carpool to our adopted 2-mile stretch of Highway 20 north of town. Dress for wet and chilly! Please call Jeff Margraf at 360-682-5421 if you have questions.

New camera system installed at OHLC!

e now have a high quality mounted camera installed at the back of the sanctuary which is routed into our worship computer so we can record services and post them on our website! Keep an eye on our website (www.oakharborlutheran.org) for more details. Perhaps by the time you receive this newsletter, we’ll already be posting sermon and/or worship videos! Watching our videos is no substitute for coming to worship regularly, of course, but we hope this ministry will be a blessing to those who cannot attend because of travel or illness, those who have moved away but want to “visit” OHLC, and especially our members in the Navy who are on deployment but have internet access.

Many thanks to Tom Piper, who oversaw this project and funded it with a personal gift, along with donations given in memory of his beloved wife, Ellie.

Training will be offered on Tuesday, January 5, 7:00 PM in the sanctuary, for those who will be running this new system.

ak Harbor Lutheran Church is a place of fellowship where we form circles of friends who support us in times of need. Here we claim the compassionate love of Christ as our model for treating one another, and when we meet together in worship we express Christ’s love as the way in which we act with one another.

Sometimes, however, we find that our compassionate circle of friends is not enough to help us through troubled times. Sometimes it takes more, especially in this Christmas season when the high expectations of the holidays can led us to frustration, isolation and even depression.

When we are going through such difficult times we may find a need for someone we can turn to as a listening, confidential ear. Stephen Ministers have a unique ministry within the church to provide such support. Stephen Ministers are trained in specific listening and reflection skills to provide support care. It is most especially a ministry that maintains confidentiality and one-on-one support. If you are going through difficult times and feel a Stephen Minister might be of help, please contact Pastor Spencer, Pastor Stroud or Jan McCullough through the church office, 360-679-1561, office@oakharborlutheran.org .

New faces join the ‘usual’ troupers in Advent presentations Thank you to the participants in this year’s series of midweek Advent dramas!

Speaking roles during the noon and/or evening productions were filled [in order of appearance] by Ron Angels: Jan McCullough & Gisela Hawley Ernst, Pastor Spencer, Kerri Totten, Mariah Harbaugh, Gisela Hawley, Jan McCullough, Christine Higgins, and Mike Higgins. Nonspeaking roles were ably presented by Tom Piper, Mike Fankhauser, Craig Pedlar, Marc Stroud, Kerri Totten, Shanna Lundstrom, and Ken Grigsby.

The setting of The Well of Songs and Stories included a beautifully painted bookcase flat, the creation of Beth Stephens, with some help from Emilee Stone and Beth’s mom, Miria Stephens.

NOTE: We had been keeping the Krafts especially in our prayers since news about their suffering a home invasion robbery in October, in which Nick was injured and their valuables were stolen. Pastor Spencer sent an immediate donation from the Pastors’ Emergency Fund to help their ministry get back on its feet. Some time later, the congregation was able to send a few other expressions of our concern. Shannon sent a midDecember note via Facebook: Dear Pastor Jeff, Thank you so much for the quilts and card. It really warmed our hearts. We received them this week.

Opportunities for fellowship, study and service

Save the date in June for the women’s gathering Empowering Women by Grace through Faith is the theme for this summer’s Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America regional gathering, to be held June 24-26 in Lynnwood.

Information is included on the registration form on the following page. The ELCA’s Region 1 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Women’s retreat Details will be available soon on the Women’s Retreat, April 1517. Gaye Rodriguey says she and the other organizers are working on a Whidbey Island venue for the event.

Blanket Workshop Get the year off to a good start by helping people in need.

hat a wonderful month of preparing for Christmas and the celebration of Jesus’ birth! We heard stories about Mary and Joseph, angels, the animals in the stable, and of course

baby Jesus!

We painted candy canes and turned them upside down to form a to remind us of Jesus. We created our Advent wreath to remind us God’s love never ends and that Christmas is coming soon. Our easelpainted bells rang out the joy of Christ’s birth as we placed them on the bulletin board near the paper Christmas trees we created.

This month was busy with projects for our preschoolers, but we certainly had time to make a quick field trip to Paint Your World! The children were able to paint ornaments to share with their families and place on their own trees at home. Santa swung by the classroom to say hello, and dropped off some yummy oranges. We had a special chapel time, where the parents were invited to witness their children receive their own story Bibles, given to them by His Kids and Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.

Lutherwood news Lutherwood Camp & Retreat Center, Bellingham

We even had our own sharing tree in our classroom, a smaller version of the one in the narthex. We encouraged the children to bring in new hats, scarves and gloves or mittens to be given to those who need them. The tree was overflowing by the time we had our last day in class and we had fun with the sorting and counting: 28 hats, 6 scarves, 38 pairs of gloves or mittens, and 1 pair of socks. Then we wrapped up the month with our annual Happy Birthday, Jesus! party. What a fun-filled month of preparing for Christ’s birth!

As we take our Christmas break, we will reflect and be thankful for our children and their families who are a part of the His Kids family.

We are thankful for the continued support of the congregation of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. We ask that we continue to be in your prayers, as we have lost a few families due to transfers and job changes. We pray that incoming families will find our preschool and come to love our program, just as many families have before them. We are looking forward to our return in January and what adventures the New Year will bring to our program.

Congratulations to Adam and Kristin Duncan, who welcomed a new baby boy into the family! Mac Robert Duncan was born on December 4, weighing 8 lbs., 3 oz., and measuring in at 19.5 inches. He joins siblings Reagan, Harper, Dax, and Sloane.

SingFit at Josephine

Christmas wedding bells ring at OHLC

I learned about SingFit at an elder care conference I attended about a year ago. Although at its best it is intended to be used as music therapy, we are currently using it as a fun activity that seems to be connecting to people in a very heartfelt way as well. It’s probably best if you Google it to try to get a taste of how it works but it sort of runs along the lines of Karaoke with a twist. We sing a whole variety of songs that I downloaded onto my iPad from a wide range of different decades and genres. However, what makes this style different is that instead of reading words on a screen (Karaoke-style), the line is dictated to you just before you sing each line. The medical benefit is that it exercises a different part of the brain than Karaoke. We are mostly doing it, though, because it seems to be a lot of fun for the residents. It connects to songs that they remember—sometimes putting them to tears—and always leading them to applause and smiles after each song.

I

had a chance to watch the film Patch Adams with some of the residents here at Josephine last month and here’s a quote that I’m carrying with me as we continue to journey ahead: “Our job is improving the quality of life, not just delaying death.” Patch Adams challenges us and our obsession with delaying death. Our society as a whole seems to put so much energy into delaying death that even the term “quality of life” is usually used in contrast to the option of death itself—but why should that be? If our God is a “God of Life,” my hope is that we could spend all our time and energy on life—and not on death.

I’ll probably be writing more on this but for now let me share with you a very fun activity that we recently started at Josephine called SingFit.

Congratulations to Kareen and Joel Aguiar, who were joined in marriage at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 19, with Pastor Spencer presiding.

Kareen is the daughter of OHLC members Zayan and Gail Kanjo. The couple will make their home in Seattle, where both are pursuing graduate studies. We wish them all of God’s blessings as they begin married life together!

In sympathy Evelyn Allieri died on December 16 at the home of her daughter where she had been receiving hospice care. She was 97. A member of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church since 2002, Evelyn had been homebound for some time and was faithfully visited over the years by our Eucharistic Ministers. At this writing, her memorial service is still in the planning stages, but a tentative date has been set for Saturday, January 9. Please call the church office for information, 360679-1561.

I give thanks for your partnership and for helping us add these little pieces that help play a role in the quality of life of our residents here at Josephine. God bless you always. Let me know if you’d like to come sing with us—we’ll set you up!
