find creative ways to share our treasures with others, such as using social media technology to “tweet” Luther’s Small Catechism. It is my prayer that Eaton’s commitment to Lutheran theology will spark a renewal of Lutheran identity in the ELCA, even as we remain an open, ecumenical church.

Finally, Eaton is eager to reassure those who have been disappointed with the ELCA in recent years that they still have a place in this denomination. As one reporter observed: “She surged in balloting after becoming the only nominee to speak directly of the elephant in the living room: theological conservatives who have remained in the denomination despite opposition to its understanding of what the Bible says about sexual morality. She said she believed the decision to ordain partnered gay clergy was the right one, but that those who understood the Bible and tradition differently needed to have a voice in the denomination.” (Ann Rodgers, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, August 19, 2013) Eaton’s plea on behalf of dissenting voices is rooted in her understanding of the cross as the center of Christian community. As she told Time magazine: “We want to be a place that says we can disagree on things that are vitally important but still listen to each other and see in the other a brother or sister in Christ, and more importantly, someone for whom Christ died.” It is my prayer that Eaton’s leadership will begin to heal some wounds, rebuild trust, and provide affirmation to more traditional members, pastors, and congregations of the ELCA.

A

surprising wind blew through the Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which convened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, August 12-17. The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton was elected Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, receiving a resounding 600 votes on the fifth ballot, over the 287 votes cast for the incumbent, the Rev. Mark Hanson, who has served as Presiding Bishop for the past 12 years. It was a historic election, Eaton being the first female Presiding Bishop to lead a Lutheran church body in the United States.

However, as important a milestone as this is, Eaton brings much more to the Office of Presiding Bishop than her gender. She brings many gifts which bode well for the renewal of our church.

Bishop-elect Eaton has a strong evangelical heart. I watched Eaton being interviewed by a reporter, and had to smile when she turned the tables and started asking sincere questions about the reporter’s faith.

When she learned the reporter had no church background she said, “Check us out! We’re open Sundays!” When asked by Time magazine what she thought was the most pressing concern facing the ELCA, Eaton spoke with both realism and optimism about the need for a renewed emphasis on evangelism in a culture which has changed dramatically: “We no longer have a place of privilege in the culture,” she said. “I’m old enough to remember public-service announcements from President Eisenhower telling us all to go to the church or synagogue of our choice.

Those days are over. The world has changed. I mean, stores used to be closed on Sundays — can you imagine? This was before there was soccer in America. Now all of that is gone. So how can we readjust and reengage as missionaries again? We have to figure this out. It is entirely possible.” (Time magazine, August 18, 2013) It is my prayer that Eaton’s evangelical heart will prove contagious across our denomination, leading to renewal and growth.

It is unfair to expect one person, even a Presiding Bishop, to single-handedly renew an entire denomination, but Bishop-elect Eaton will bring many gifts with her when she takes office on November 1.

Please join me in praying for her. Let us here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church join her in the work of invitation, evangelism, outreach, and careful attention to the ties that bind. With the wind of the Holy Spirit at our backs, we have an exciting future ahead of us.

She speaks regularly of the need for the ELCA to share the gifts of our rich heritage in a world where many have not heard the gracious notes of the gospel ring as loudly as they do in Lutheran Christianity. Join us for a hike on Sunday, September 1

Members and friends of all ages are invited to join us for an OHLC hike to Whistle Lake near Anacortes.

We’ll leave from the church at 12:00 noon. Feel free to bring a sack lunch, and to wear your hiking clothes to worship. This hike has been listed in Best Hikes with Kids, and is an easy, mostly flat 3.7 miles if you do the whole loop. There is also a shorter option just to the lake and back. It is a beautiful area! We’ll carpool from the church, as there is limited parking at the trailhead. Join us for a fun time out in God’s creation!

n September 29, 2013, Oak Harbor Lutheran Church will celebrate 75 years of worshipping, growing, and serving on Whidbey Island.

Bishop Kirby Unti of the Northwest Washington Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will be the guest preacher at the 10:30 AM service.

At 1:00 PM, we will enjoy a retro, 1930s-themed banquet featuring salmon or chicken and catered by the Anglums. As our banquet concludes we will honor Harvey and Rose Ann Herrigstad as we dedicate our fellowship hall as “Herrigstad Hall.” Finally, we will gather in the sanctuary at 2:00 PM for a special program celebrating the history – and the future – of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, with lots of stories and more singing. Former pastors, youth workers, children of charter members, and other guests have been invited to the festivities. It will be a grand occasion – and you’re invited! If you’re planning on attending the banquet and haven’t already done so, please RSVP by Sept. 9 via an opportunity form or call the church office, 679-1561; tell us how many will attend and whether you’d prefer chicken or salmon.

“Catchup” campaign concludes Thanks so much to everyone who put a little something extra on top of their regular offering in our summer catchup campaign. We are MUCH better off than we were in June, thanks to your generous contributions. Thanks also to our anonymous donor, who provided $5,000.00 in matching funds to help us “catch up” to where we need to be in support of our 2013 budget.

Thanks to Carol Reafs, our stewardship leader and catchup lady, who distributed bottles of catchup as thank you gifts and regaled us with other condiment-inspired puns. Finally, thanks to Three Sisters Cattle Company who provided something to go with the catchup, offering hot dogs as further thank you gifts for donations of $100.00 or more. Who says stewardship can’t be fun?

small group of Lutherans came to Oak Harbor from North Dakota during the Great Depression of the 1930s. There was no Lutheran A church in Oak Harbor and their dream was to have a church of their own.

Instrumentalists wanted for the anniversary celebration!

Their dream became a reality when the church was organized in 1938, being served by pastors from Anacortes Lutheran Church. Until 1948, services were held in homes, the Liberal League Hall at San de Fuca, the Community Hall in Oak Harbor, the Christian School, and the First Reformed Church. In 1949, the first service was held in the first church structure which still stands at 1560 SE 9th Ave, Oak Harbor. The first service in the present church building was on April 1, 1984.

An instrumental ensemble is being formed to play two selections as part of OHLC’s 75th Anniversary program on Sept. 29. Verna Morgan has the music; contact her if you’re interested in participating, 678-2093, themorgans@cablespeed.com .

hanks to everyone who sent in pictures of Jesus in various T places throughout the summer. We hope it was not only a fun thing to do, but a reminder that Jesus is with us wherever we go. We’re a well-traveled bunch! Jesus was seen everywhere from Kampala, Uganda to Glacier Bay, Alaska, and many points in between. You can view a retrospective collage in the hallway leading to the Sunday School wing. Thanks to Melissa Johnson for preparing the collage, and for starting this wonderful project!

Bring your backpack for a blessing on September 8 As a new school year begins, we invite the youth of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church to bring their backpacks and His Kids Preschool school bags to worship on Sunday, September 8 for a special blessing.

The blessing will be offered at both the 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM services.

Intergenerational Bible study begins September 15 This fall, meet your ANCESTORS again for the first time! We’ll learn the unvarnished truth about our ancestors in faith as we study the lives of key people in the Old Testament. We’ll use short (and often very funny) animated video clips, Bible study, and conversation to reacquaint ourselves with important Biblical stories, going deeper into the narratives to discover how God worked through these imperfect people to reveal his perfect love.

This will be a Bible study series like you’ve never experienced before!

Brotherhood of St. Bernard

Gearing up for the fall bazaar

T

he Brotherhood of Saint Bernard will have our regular lunch/meeting on Tuesdays, Sept. 10 & 24 from noon to 1:30 PM in the Herrigstad fellowship hall. We welcome both “Old Dogs” and “Young Pups” to this traditional time of sharing good food, some laughter and kidding, some serious projects to contemplate, digging deep into our Master Builders’ Bibles for scripture understanding, and prayers for one another and for concerns here and abroad.

The women of Lydia Circle will sponsor a craft workshop on Monday, Sept. 9 at 5:00 PM to make hairbands and barrettes for the bazaar. Bring glue guns and small decorations such as silk flowers and buttons for the hairbands.

There will be a planning meeting on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 11:45 AM. Please bring a sample of your craft items and be prepared to speak about pricing.

ydia Circle: This circle is on hiatus until Monday, October 7, when we’ll begin studying a series entitled The Bad Girls of the Bible. The book/workbook is available at His Place Christian Bookstore. eborah Circle: Starting on Sept. 5, Deborah Circle will begin a new Bible study, In Good Company: Stories of Biblical Women by Kay Ward. Session 1 is “Hannah, A Promise Keeper.” Meetings are every Thursday in the church library, 10 AM until noon. The study is a part of Gather magazine, a publication from the Women of the ELCA.

Lutheran Men in Mission By the time you receive this newsletter for September you will already know that we have decided not to have our regular breakfast gathering on September 7. This is just a reminder: No LMM breakfast meeting in September!

However, we are planning for a great breakfast on October 5 and we do want to get a head start on inviting you to that upcoming event.

We will be having a great breakfast, a manly kind of breakfast, filled with eggs, bacon and sausage and tots, OJ and sweet rolls and fruit – in short, all the stuff we probably should not be eating if we were looking at our waistlines and EKGs. (We will have some yogurt and granola along with the fruit for those of us who are more disciplined).

Blanket Workshop meets Tuesday & Wednesday, Sept. 3 & 4, beginning at 9:00 AM in the fellowship hall.

Since it will be October and since that is a month where Lutherans seem to find a particular delight in pointing out how important Luther was to the Reformation, your two pastors will offer a presentation on Martin Luther’s life. We will cover the life of Luther as a common man, his strengths and weaknesses, his humor, his anger, his quick wit, his struggles with his health. Luther is a very interesting fellow, a man in whose life we may easily to compare ourselves in own daily walk in Christ.

So plan to come, one and all! Invite a friend! Invite yourself!

Rev. Bieniek hails from Corpus Christi, Texas. A 20-year resident of Austin, he spent 16 years teaching school. He was ordained in 2005 and became a hospital chaplain, board certified (BCC) through the Association of Professional Chaplains. He presently serves as a Hospice Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator in the Hospice program at Whidbey General Hospital.

Go Missions International buys the farm

- Chiclayo, Peru

OHLC-sponsored missionaries, Nick & Shannon Kraft and their family have been working towards purchasing a piece of land where they’ll be able to build a home for their various training and discipleship programs. The site is 2¾ acres, about 20 minutes from the city of Chiclayo in a small, rural area called Pomape, and the price was right. In May, Shannon wrote, “It’s big enough to house the entire vision [of Go Missions] and yet not so big that we couldn’t manage it.”

Your designated additional offerings this month will go to Lutheran World Relief with special emphasis on paying for shipping fees for the quilts made by our congregation’s Blanket Workshop.

Now, in her Aug. 22nd e-mail, Shannon sends an update: Since buying the property, we have been praying. Step one completed; now how to do step two? We’re just faithfully planting.

Planting in the lives of our future students and alumni. Planting the vision in pastors around the area. Planting in our team.

Today we began planting, not just in the spiritual but in the physical as well. We don’t know the first thing about it, but God has given us good mentors and teachers. Mr. Andres and his wife Ramona are excited about having two disciples. They are teaching us the ropes.

Today the tractor came and cleared the field. Saturday, we will plant corn. We were in their home yesterday and we brainstormed about avocado trees, passion fruit trees, plums, and fruit I have never heard of. Ramona, with a twinkle in her eye, said, “Now, what about animals?”

Today, Nicolas – out of breath from his 45-minute bike ride back from the property – kissed me on the cheek as he arrived home and exclaimed, “Babe, can you believe it, we bought a farm!”
