What unites us

It is November, and we are headed into an election year. There is a growing temptation in our culture, especially in election years, to make our political tribe the most important marker of our identity. I hope you will resist this temptation – especially at church. The range of Christian concerns and proposed solutions do not fit neatly into one party or ideology. It is fitting, then, that our congregation has both conservatives and liberals in it. I am glad our congregation includes our state’s newest senator, recently appointed by the Washington state Republican party (congrats, Ron!), and that we also have people who are actively involved in the Democratic party.

It especially warms my heart to see people the world so often tries to pit against each other kneeling side by side at the communion rail, understanding that they are equally in need of the forgiveness Christ gives through the bread and wine. Our political climate encourages the worst kinds of hubris and self-righteousness. Kneeling together in our shared need of grace helps keep this in check, and it is this shared need for grace that is the true basis for all Christian community.

“I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.”

ast month I attended a theological conference in San Diego. To my knowledge, it is the only theological conference in the country which includes Lutherans from the full alphabet soup of American Lutheran church bodies today: ELCA, LCMS, WELS, NALC, and LCMC. There was even an Episcopalian and a Baptist there giving presentations, for crying out loud! What could possibly bring together these disparate kinds of Christians, especially those within our own Lutheran family who are so prone to bitter infighting and don’t seem to do much of anything together anymore?

It’s simple really: our common faith. In fact, “The Common Faith” was the theme of the gathering this year as we explored the Apostles Creed. It was a delightful time of celebration, learning, and fellowship.

Our unity as Christians is found in our common faith. As important as it is to be engaged in the political issues of our day, we have one common hope – and it is not in ourselves, our works, or our efforts. Our hope is in Christ alone. We have one Lord, and he is not on any ballot. We have one common baptism, through which we have been born into a new family and given an identity far above and beyond any other. We have one God and Father of us all, and so we are brothers and sisters before we are red or blue.

Did we all agree about crucial matters facing the church? Um, no.

Did we all agree on the political crises our nation has been embroiled in for the past few years? Other than to agree that it is a mess, nope. But a funny thing happened as we focused on the essentials of our shared faith. We learned from one another. We found reasons to rejoice together. We became friends. We were renewed by our celebration of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Then we went back to our congregations and communities to serve God in our own ways in the freedom of the gospel.

Every worship service at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church is a celebration of our common faith. We gather to hear the Good News we all so desperately need to hear, the Good News of Christ Jesus that is ultimately the only true hope for the world. We rejoice in this Good News together, enjoying fellowship and friendship. And then we go back to our callings and our communities to serve God in our own ways in the freedom of the gospel. For some OHLC members, that means serving on the board at the Pregnancy Care Clinic. For others it means serving on the board at SPIN Café. For some it means advocating for immigrants and refugees. For others it means working to strengthen marriages. This diversity is good. It is healthy. And it becomes possible only when we realize that we are bound together by something far greater than our individual concerns and passions. It becomes possible only when we are intentional about uniting around the things that matter most.

This conference reaffirmed my vision for what we are called to be here at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. I was called here nine years ago to build bridges and unite a divided congregation. I’ve worked hard to do that by focusing on the essentials of our shared faith, centering our congregational mission efforts where there is common ground, and encouraging people to live out their faith according to their particular passions and callings in the freedom of the gospel. While this approach is not without criticism, I believe it is faithful to St. Paul’s own vision for the church articulated in Ephesians 4 (cited above), where he encourages the believers in Ephesus to unite around the things that matter most: their one hope, one 2

NOV. 17: Holy Communion class for kids On Sunday, November 17 from noon to 1:30, Pastor Spencer will be offering his “Journey to Jesus’ Table” class. This class is intended for children in the elementary grades who would like to begin receiving Holy Communion, as well as continuing education for children who are already receiving. Those who are not yet receiving will be invited to receive their first communion the following Sunday (Nov. 24, Christ the King Sunday) or on a Sunday of their choosing.

ate September through mid-October 2019 proved to be a difficult few weeks for our church family, as we mourned the loss of Marge Link on Sept. 28, Fay Hanson on Oct. 13, and Rose Ann Herrigstad on Oct. 14. Together, these longtime members added up to 123 years of connection to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church. Marge and Fay had been faithful servants in Blanket Workshop over the years; Fay had been a member of Morning Glory Choir and the 2nd Wednesday Book Group. Rose Ann Herrigstad was an early member of the Chancel Choir (at that point known as the Senior Choir). All were regular worshipers and participants in Bible study.

OHLC welcomes new members!

On October 27 we welcomed seven new members to OHLC: Drew & Erin Norman and their kids Kerrick, Connor, and Emma have returned to Oak Harbor after a lengthy deployment took the whole family to Bahrain. They are not only worshipping with us again, but decided to make their membership with us official!

Curt and Kathleen Davis are the son and daughter-in-law of Carol Reafs. They live in Coupeville and are often found at our Sunday evening worship services at St. Mary’s, but they have been worshipping frequently at OHLC as well and have decided to become members.

Coming in January: OHLC at Silvertips hockey game!

We are planning an OHLC outing to Angel of the Winds arena in Everett on Sunday, January 12, to watch the Silvertips play hockey! The puck drops at 4:05 PM. More details are still forthcoming. In the meantime, save the date!

Camp Lutherwood Notes Lutherwood’s annual fundraiser auction is Saturday, Nov. 16, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 215 Mukilteo Blvd, Everett.

Thanksgiving Eve service is discontinued

A

fter years of declining attendance, Pastor Jeff Spencer, Pastor Jon Draskovic (Whidbey Presbyterian), and Pastor David Parker (First United Methodist) decided together to discontinue the Thanksgiving Eve service. Our congregations will look for other ways to work together and celebrate our full communion relationships.

In related news, Pastor Jon Draskovic has accepted a new call in Ogden, Utah. We give thanks for his time in Oak Harbor and wish him well in his new congregation and community.

Coming in December, Advent adult Bible study:

Fair Trade Winds at OHLC on December 1!

Fair Trade Winds will be coming to OHLC on Sunday, December 1, offering goods from artisans from developing nations. Visit their display in Herrigstad Hall between or after services to peruse a wide variety of gifts. Your purchases directly support farmers and craftspeople in impoverished lands. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be sent to Lutheran World Relief.

Hope, Peace, Joy, Love The season of Advent brings with it a variety of rich scriptures, timeless church traditions, and celebrations for all ages’ participation in the worship space. Advent is the season to lavishly decorate the sanctuary in colors of sky blues and white and gold in anticipation of the coming nativity of the baby Jesus.

Advent Calendars, with chocolate!

During November and by popular demand, Fair Trade Chocolate Advent Calendars will be available from Martha in the church office. The cost is $8 apiece, and checks need to be payable to Fair Trade Winds. Each window of the Advent calendar reveals a portion of the Christmas story and yields a scrumptious, melt-in-yourmouth milk chocolate heart. 5% of sales from this Advent calendar will go towards empowerment initiatives for the women cocoa farmers of Kuapa Kokoo [which means Good Cocoa Farmer in the Twi language] in Ghana.

The four Sundays of Advent are marked with a weekly theme, taking us on a journey towards the manger, where we’ll arrive on Christmas Eve. The four progressive themes of hope, peace, joy and love remind us that Christ’s birth is the fulfillment of the long-expected Savior, promised of old.

Please come to this series of Advent presentations in the library during the 9:15 AM Sunday School hour on December 1, 8, 15 & 22.

Part of each program will include some brilliant videos by the presenters of The Bible Project, the same video group we watched last year in our study of the Old Testament.

We wore our PJ’s to school, played games, and had snacks with some great stories. What a great way to end a busy month – going to work and to school in our PJs!

Here’s how our students finished the sentence, “My favorite color is...”

O

ctober was full of beautiful autumn colors and nocturnal animals! We focused on the letters O, B and X. We made owls from paper plates and cupcake liners for the letter O, and easel-painted Clarity’s owl orange ovals as well as circles in preparation to create jack-o-lanterns. We painted brown bats for the letter B and learned that bats on our island are very helpful by eating lots of bugs. We also created big black spiders from our hand prints cut from black construction paper, and they are spinning their webs in our classroom while hanging from the ceiling.

As the month moved on, we talked about the importance of our bones as we spoke about the letter X for “x-rays”. We recently acquired a light table, and the children are able to view x-rays to see how neat it is for our bones to support our bodies.

As we prepared for our annual open house, we talked about our families and ourselves as we created a book, All About Me, for this exciting night. We learned that God has created each of us to be different and wonderful in our own way.

Fall is the time for harvesting, and we helped “harvest” some of the pumpkins at Case Farms at our field trip. We were able to see their animals as well as some of the great produce they have available at their thriving family farm.

Ms. Debbie, our science lady, came by and we talked about engineering, and then tried building houses out of straw, sticks or bricks.

lva McArthur, His Kids Preschool’s lead teacher, and her family send their thanks to those who scheduled and provided meals following her surgery in October. She’s back in class and her healing is going well.

Continued prayers on her behalf are very much appreciated – she has follow-up appointments in November and a plan will be developed for further treatment.

During another visit with Ms. Debbie, she brought a pumpkin to class, completed a chemistry experiment and we watched the pumpkin erupt! Then she took us outside for a spider walk. What fun that was!

Compassion Ministry November is Josephine month

O

ur ministry focus for the month is the intergenerational support and care system of Josephine Caring Community in Stanwood.

My request of you at this time is to pray about your participation.

As Paul reminds us in Acts, Jesus said “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” May you find blessing in your generosity of prayer and presence and presents with Josephine!

With deep Lutheran roots in Stanwood’s Norwegian immigrant community, “Josephine Old People’s Home” was dedicated Sept. 1908 on land donated by John Hals, a local shingle mill owner, in memory of his wife Josephine, who had died in childbirth three years earlier. At the dedication, Mr. Hals addressed the gathering of over 1,000 people, charging them to “Care for others as God has provided for us.” [see the History section of the Josephine website for more info!]

OHLC Russian partner St. Katharina Church celebrates 250th anniversary in 2021

As a Social Ministry Organization of the ELCA, Josephine is required to have partner churches as corporate members, and currently partners with 19 area Lutheran congregations. Oak Harbor Lutheran Church’s delegates to Josephine are Mary Brock and Peg Fosnaugh.

An invitation has been extended to attend the 250th Anniversary of OHLC Russia partner church, St. Katharina Lutheran Church in Kazan, Russia, during August 2021. The congregation is planning a grand event dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the construction of the church. Interest in attending has already been expressed by the ELCA NW WA Synod Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee, and OHLC members.

One of the requirements to travel to Russia is a Russian visa. I have traveled to Russia three times and I’ve worked with Alexander Vilkevich at East West Tours in Bothell. Alex suggested starting to organize for the trip in Feb. 2021, and to start getting a Russian visa three months prior. It is too early to estimate air fare. Be thinking about possible side trips to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

As the seasons turn and we head towards the liturgical season of Advent, our thoughts are turning towards Christmas preparations.

Planning has begun for the Christmas Giving Tree.

Like the rest of us, folks at Josephine delight in knowing they are remembered. For the past few years, this community has offered gifts to each of our nursing home, rehab, and assisted living residents. With you, we approach the task of acquiring and delivering over 200 personal gifts, thoughtfully wrapped in love, prayer, and connection.

It takes some time to do this well. A volunteer coordinator from your church will work with you to decide if and how many gifts your

Watoto: A big THANK YOU for all your support and encouragement and for helping to make our Watoto Childcare Ministries benefit Octoberfest a success. We raised about $7,000.

OHLC’s annual Coat Drive: We will continue our annual warm coat and other warm clothing drive through November. All sizes are appreciated – men’s, women’s, children’s. Please place clean, new or gently used coats, and other warm items in the designated bin in the narthex. New socks in all sizes are also very much appreciated. Thank you for sharing.

Sharing Tree: OHLC’s Sharing Tree will be in place in the narthex on Sunday, December 1. As you read on the previous page, we’ll incorporate items for some of the residents of Josephine Caring Community in Stanwood. If you or someone you know is in need of items that could be requested on the Sharing Tree, please contact Pastor Spencer or Pastor Stroud.

SPIN Café: serving days updated!

SPIN will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, which would have been one of our regular, last-Thursday serving days. Food is available elsewhere that day, thanks to the Community Thanksgiving dinner.

We’re also adjusting our monthly volunteer schedule to serve on the 3rd Thursday of the month rather than the 2nd. Please note November’s days will be Thursday, the 21st & Wednesday, the 27th.

M

artin Rinkart, a German Lutheran minister, wrote the hymn “Now Thank We All Our God” in 1636. At the time, the Thirty Years’ War was ravaging central Europe, claiming millions of lives. Rinkart served as pastor in Eilenburg, a walled town that became a crowded refuge for starving fugitives. Although Rinkart was struggling to provide for his own family, he opened his own home to people in need.

Carol Wall & Val Friedell

After the plague entered Eilenburg, Rinkart conducted up to 50 funerals a day — including services for his wife and the only other two pastors in town. Amid the despair, he wrote many hymns, including “Now Thank We All Our God.” Originally intended as a table prayer, it’s now sung at Thanksgiving to remember God’s “countless gifts of love” — even during hardships.
