Report from Quaker Cove

We also spent time discussing a book we’ve been reading together called Growing Young: Six Essential Strategies for Helping Young People Discover and Love Your Church. The six strategies articulated in the book are 1) unlocking keychain leadership (empowering young people for ministry), 2) empathizing with today’s young people, 3) taking Jesus’ message seriously, 4) fueling warm community, 5) prioritizing young people and families, and 6) being good neighbors. The chapters describing each strategy are rich with ideas and I’m sure we’ll be revisiting the material, but at our retreat we focused on what it means to fuel a warm community. The book, written by a team of youth ministry experts at Fuller Seminary, argues that a warm, caring congregational culture with authentic relationships and opportunities for inclusion matters much more than programs or worship style in attracting and retaining younger people. We agreed that in many ways we are doing well in this area, but that there is always room for improvement.

n October 20-21, the OHLC Church Council went on a retreat together at Quaker Cove on Fidalgo Island. We learned a lot during our time together, including that our newest council member, Kate Dodson, is really good at board games, and that Wolly Fowkes can eat approximately six pounds of black licorice in one sitting.

One of the main goals of our retreat was to get to know each other better and bond as a community of leaders, and through our shared meals, laughter, and conversations, I’d say this goal was met in spades.

In one of our retreat sessions we discussed how to streamline the way we organize our ministries to lessen the burden on volunteers, eliminate extra meetings, and improve communication.

The decision was made to move away from the “coaches” model to a “council contact” model. Under this model, the five council members who are not serving as officers will serve as stewards of one of our five ministry teams. These council contacts will communicate with leaders, authorize expenses, bring agenda items from their ministry team, submit information for the annual report, and pray specifically for their ministry team at the end of each council meeting. Those ministry teams not directly led by staff (Table Fellowship, Compassion, and Operations) will have coordinators who will convene meetings as they see fit, and organize the hands-on ministry. You should know who the council contacts are for each team: Worship and Music – Kate Dodson; Growing and Learning – Shawn Christensen; Table Fellowship – Anita Needler; Compassion – Glenn Cornelius; Operations – Jack Wilcox. If you have an expense to authorize, an agenda item for council, or a prayer concern, please contact them. You should also know that for organizational purposes the Welcome team is now part of Worship and Music, and Care-Giving is part of the Compassion team. These changes are more a series of tweaks than a major overhaul, but we feel these tweaks will save time, conserve volunteer energy, and help us do ministry together more efficiently.

e worshiped together, too. Friday night we sang Compline together by candlelight. Saturday afternoon before departing we shared Holy Communion. The homily for the closing service was based on Ephesians chapter four, and became a dialogue on the importance of striving for unity in the midst of all the forces working to pull people apart. As Saint Paul writes, there is one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all.

When this is the focus of our ministry together, we see that what unites us as Christians is so much greater than any differences we might have. To strive for this unity is a never-ending task. The enemy doesn’t rest, and we can’t either. It is hard work, but the effort is worth it to maintain a healthy congregation united in mission.

I want to thank Marge Moore for her initiative and planning for this retreat. I want to thank the rest of the council for carving time out of their busy lives so we could spend this extended time with each other. The council that snores together soars together. (I just made that up.) I rejoice in our strengthened relationships and look forward to the fruits of this retreat as we continue to serve to Christ and his people at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.

Marge Moore led us through a survey of New Testament passages pertaining to service in Christ’s church, the gifts God gives us to share, and God’s presence and power in the midst of his people. ctober was full of activity inside the classroom, learning about the letters O, B, P, X and N. With the help of those letters we learned about nocturnal animals such as bats and owls, and what fun crafts we did with those animals too! Peek inside the classroom to see the “bats” flying in the air, and the owls sitting in the “rafters” of the classroom. Continuing our fall theme, we studied about our skeleton and what exactly it helps us do in our bodies. We will be soon starting our nutrition theme, and will be continuing this throughout the month of November. Please check back in next month’s newsletter for information on that!

Here’s how our preschoolers answered that question.

On the windiest day yet this fall, we headed out to the Case Farm for the yearly pumpkin patch field trip. We had a tour of their working farm, met their puppy and got to harvest some of their pumpkins! It is always a fun event when we head out to see Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin.

This month, we had enough interest from our families to start the Pre-K Readiness Program! We have a class of 9 children participating, a combination of children from both the morning and afternoon classes.

This class is held on Thursday and Fridays from 9 AM to 12:00 PM. We are excited that we are able to offer this program to help prepare these future kindergartners.

We invited the families to attend our annual open house with their children on the evening of October 25. This gave the opportunity for the children to show off their crafts that they have completed since class started, and introduce their friends that they have made. The classroom was buzzing with excitement and energy! The children are always so happy to show off their achievements.

Set sail on a sea of great shopping, including Advent calendars!

air Trade Winds will be coming to OHLC on Sunday, Dec. 10 with an array of goods by artisans from developing nations. Visit their display in Herrigstad Hall between or after services to peruse a wide variety of gifts. Your purchases directly support farmers and craftspeople in impoverished lands. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be sent to Lutheran World Relief.

Fair trade means farmers and artisans earn a fair, living wage for their work and are guaranteed safe working conditions. Fair trade isn’t charity; it’s an opportunity for artisans to break the cycle of poverty.

This year, chocolate Advent calendars will be made available for purchase and pick-up before the season of Advent begins! Emily Lynn from Fair Trade Winds will send a box of calendars to the church office in November. You will be able to purchase them for $8 each,with checks payable to Fair Trade Winds, and pick them up then and there.

There are 24 calendars to a box, so act as soon as you hear they’re in!

They’re great gifts for kids, grandkids, and even “greats.”

Watoto Children’s Choir is coming to Oak Harbor!

W

atoto Children’s Choir comes to Oak Harbor on Friday, November 10 for a concert at 7:00 PM at Oak Harbor High School. OHLC’s Watoto Mission Team will prepare dinner at church before the performance for the children and adults along with the local host families they’ll be staying with overnight.

Host homes are needed for 9 teams of one adult and 2 or 3 children. Please consider signing up for this joyous experience.

Separate beds or rooms are NOT needed. They will sleep on sofas and floors. Hosts will be given an information sheet – basically it’s to pick them up after the performance, give them a snack (they use a lot of energy), provide breakfast, and return them to church in the morning with a sack lunch. They truly will eat almost anything. Remember, it’s an adventure for them too.

Pencils and paper add up to hope and opportunity

Thank you, also, for the great support for our annual Watoto Octoberfest Dinner/Auction at the Elks Lodge on Saturday, October 28.

Our final count isn’t in at the time of this writing, but we can tell you it was a huge success and a fun evening!

What has 544 spiral notebooks, 680 pencils, and between 2,176 and 3,264 crayons?

Here’s a hint: those and other items were packed into in 136 colorful drawstring backpacks, ready for our November shipment for Lutheran World Relief.

The women of Deborah Circle did the actual assembly of 4 notebooks, 5 pencils, 5 ballpoint pens, 1 pencil sharpener, 1 ruler, 1 pair of scissors, 1 eraser, and 1 box of 16 or 24 crayons in each kit.

The LWR website reminds us that “pencils and paper can help write a positive future,” especially in areas where poverty or disaster has limited the options for children – and in some cases adults – to continue learning. We’re delighted to help work towards this goal.

The evening will begin at 4:00 PM with games and silent auction, followed by dinner and the live auction. Tickets are $40 per person or $250 per table. OHLC’s library will be in use in December for a 2-part Smart Driver course, offered by AARP: Friday, December 1, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Friday, December 8, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM This course, specifically designed for drivers age 50 and older, provides research-based information to help you update your driving knowledge and skills.

By participating in this course, you are taking advantage of an important opportunity to learn how to drive more safely and confidently.

You will find yourself making positive changes in your driving behavior.

Cost of the course is $15 for AARP Members (bring your AARP card to class), and $20 for non-members.

Our hearts go out to Oscar and Lori Bakke and family , following the death of Oscar’s daughter Jayne. She had been ill with MS for many years and most recently had been living in a care facility in Concrete. There will be a memorial service for Jayne Bakke at OHLC, 10 AM Friday, Nov. 10.

We also received word of the death of Sadie Chambers, a former member of OHLC (and loyal volunteer for a good many years of our Newsletter Assembly Crew with her dear friend Betty Ellis). She was 93. Sadie died on Oct. 21 in Sedro Woolley; there was a memorial gathering at Wallin Funeral Home in Oak Harbor on Oct.27.
